Small Change Makes Change Most of us save some money from time to time. How we go about doing that is the interesting thing. During the Great Depression my grandmother saved whatever she could in a fruit jar. Now I put savings in the bank but still have little bits socked away in odd containers at home. This is always small-time change. Pennies. Pin money. But the act of hanging on to it is compulsive. You never know when you might need it. It’s an ancient, defensive feeling that comes from deep in our bones. This need to horde capital isn’t a Western invention anymore than capitalism is a creation of the modern world. Capital, real tradable currency of some description, is what has glued the remnants of civilization together throughout human history. Cattle, shells, beads, coinage, currency; they have all financed trade at one time or another. It takes some capital, some grease, some dinero, some jack to make things happen. If you haven’t got it then you usually take your collateral, the accumulated value of the things you own, and go to the bank and borrow it.

But what if you haven’t got anything, nothing that the bank will value as collateral? I mean nothing at all. We all know that banks only lend when you don’t really need the money. Without access to credit you’re nobody, you’re nothing, you’re out of the game and, essentially, you don’t exist in the Industrial World. The same is true only more so in the Third World. The very, very poor barely seem human to us in the conditions of their day to day lives. Access to capital is beyond their lifetime dreams and yet loans on a tiny scale, a microfinance level, to impossibly poor individuals are almost always repaid. Repayment levels that banks never see here. Loan repayments of 97%+ happen because each borrower knows that that loan is the absolute last hope of ever seeing any independent capital again. There is no recourse whatsoever to even a small additional amount of money unless that loan is repaid. That capital provides the only chance for a stable life for their families. These people aren’t stupid; they know one golden opportunity when they see it. All they need is a little capital to make something happen. Amazingly, these people, most frequently women, are almost constantly saving small drips and drabs of money one way or another. A few pennies are salted away, a chicken is bought, or a goat or a pig. Eventually, a few women will pool their money to put it in a safer place, perhaps a three-way lock box. Like sharing a safety deposit box with a friend you trust. If a village is fortunate enough to eventually accumulate savings then they will want some better return on their funds. Generally, they form a credit union and make small loans to their members. Everyone supports the whole and everyone benefits. Small capital earned by making yoghurt or weaving cane chairs has grown to be enough to finance a tractor or a well or an education. Does this begin to sound vaguely familiar? In the end it’s always the same story with capital and it’s the same the same road to saving it. None of us are so very different, at least not when we’re poor. Capital and access to credit are big issues, big enough to distinguish the haves from the have-nots. That line of demarcation is only subtle to us because we live pretty comfortably on the right side of it now. Getting there is what it’s all about. JK

COMBATTING THE FLU With H1N1 virus wreaking havoc and this year’s flu season in the offing, you might want to explore homeopathy. The many remedies of this alternative health care system are safe and have no nasty side effects. For the regular flu, you might want to keep Boiron’s OSCILLOCOCCINUM or Homecan’s FLU BUSTER on hand (to be taken at first showing of symptoms), for weakness after the worst symptoms are gone, CARBO VEGETALIS 12C (1-2 time per day) is generally recommended. For more detailed advice, it is best to consult a homeopath. H1N1 should ideally be caught in the early stages, and ARSENICUM SF COMPLEX 10X-30X-100X has proven very effective. It can also be used as a preventive (taken once a week) until flu season is over. Many health food stores keep homeopathic remedies in stock or would be pleased to order them from the manufacturer, including Swift Current’s Nature Nook, 1-306-773-1266 or Saskatoon’s Herbs and Health, 1-306-6641070 BF

Small Change, Big Results There’s a group of friends in Eastend who have know each other for over 30 years. Seven couples shared coffee, played cards, visited and all had families. All are now over 65. They stayed close over the years even as changes inevitably took place. Some of those loved friends were lost or moved away. Still the friendships survived. Yearly occasions were marked with cards and gifts, the giving continued long beyond any real need for more tangible remembrances. At some point it became a little uncomfortable and someone suggested that in the future all those little sums that went for token gifts should be pooled and put aside until something valuable could be decided to be done by the group as a whole. What could a small group like that accomplish with their little savings? Well, as it turns out, quite a lot. The money in the jar has financed scrabble boards for the Health Centre, as well as roaster ovens and slow cookers that are now used constantly at the Eastend Memorial Hall and the Skating Rink. A pizza oven also appeared at the Rink. The current plan is to buy chairs for the Eastend Swimming Pool. Piece by piece these small sums keep giving and the satisfaction returns in continuous repayment. The love this group has for their community is tangible. Lucky us. JK Quick Facts

Atlatl This spear-thrower is a tool that uses leverage to achieve greater velocity in dart-throwing, and includes a bearing surface which allows the user to temporarily store energy during the throw. It consists of a shaft with a cup or a spur, which may be integrated into the weapon or made separately and attached, in which the butt of the projectile, properly called a dart, rests. It is held near the end farthest from the cup, and the dart is thrown by the action of the upper arm and wrist. An atlatl can readily achieve ranges of greater than 100 meters and speeds of over 150 km/h.

Heat oil in heavy large pot over medium heat. Add leeks; sprinkle with salt and pepper and sauté until leeks begin to soften, stirring often, about 5 minutes. Add mushrooms, garlic, and rosemary; increase heat to medium-high and sauté until mushrooms soften and begin to brown, stirring often, about 7 minutes. Add tomatoes with juice; stir 1 minute. Add barley and 4 cups broth; bring to boil. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer until barley is almost tender, about 20 minutes. Add kale; stir until wilted, about 1 minute. Cover and simmer until kale and barley are tender, adding more broth by 1/4 cupfuls as needed for desired stew consistency, about 10 minutes.
When a star ten times more massive than our own Sun explodes (Supernova) it leaves behind the strangest phenomenon in the Universe. The Black Hole. After the explosion what is left behind is a heavy core of subatomic particles, a Neutron Star. It can be very small, but with enormous density. Scientists calculated that approximately one teaspoon of Neutron Star would weight around billions of tons. The gravitational pressure of this highly dense object is so large that it can bend fabric of time and space. This theory is based on Einstein's proposition that space and time are woven together in a flexible fabric. Massive objects like the Sun warp the fabric of space and time and pull smaller objects like the Earth. A very large Neutron Star can warp time and space fabric so much that it can create a hole where gravity is so strong that not even light could escape. Black Holes are pulling everything around them closer to the center of the hole. In some sense Black Holes are creators of the galaxies since they are pulling planets and stars towards the spiral center. Each galaxy has a Black Hole and occasionally galaxies collide together because of the gravitational pull from the larger Black Holes. It is expected that in 5 billion years Andromeda galaxy will collide with our Milky Way

Astronomy on the Edge VY Canis Majoris is the largest star known to man. It is a red Hypergiant, located in the Milky Way and measuring between 1800 to 2100 solar radii. One Radius is equal to the current radius of the Sun and it is approximately 432,450 miles (695,500 kilometers). VY Canis Majoris is so large that if our Sun were replaced by it, its surface would extend to (or maybe even pass) the orbit of Saturn. In Earth terms it would take 70 000 000 000 000 000 (70 quadrillion) Earths to fill up the VY Canis Majoris.
