Another quiet evening at home snugly ensconced on the couch with a bowl of popcorn, watching a movie, relaxed, when the phone rings at 9 pm. After much struggling with remotes, searching for slippers and desperate flailing in the dark I grab the phone only to discover that I have been selected to participate in a survey. My patience is being tested to the limit as I’ve received exactly the same call four nights in a row. Additionally, I’ve been plagued by a flurry of calls periodically during the day to sell me cruises, subscriptions, credit cards and millions of other annoying products or services that I don’t want. The calls always begin with a warm “Hello, how are you today?” It seems rude not to respond equally pleasantly. However, now I know this is just a ruse to set me up for a targeted marketing spiel. Any reasonable civility on my part is immediately taken as a sure sign of consumer weakness. As a matter of fact any degree of rudeness on my part does not put them off a bit. Simply disconnecting is my safest bet but it doesn’t protect me from the recorded messages and useless hype that get left on my answering system. These messages average about two a day.

In September cell phone numbers will go public. All cell phone numbers will be released to telemarketing companies and you will begin to receive solicitation calls. The difference is that, as opposed to a land line or ordinary home phone, you will be charged for the incoming calls on your cell phone including the ones you don’t answer but which leave a message. In short order this is going to become irritating in the extreme. However, there is a National Do Not Call list. It’s easy to register and only takes a couple of minutes but it takes a month to become effective so do it soon. There are two ways to register. The first is to call the National Do Not Call Registry at 888-3821222. You must do this using the cell phone whose number you want to have blocked. The second way to register is to go to the website www.lnnte-dncl.gc.ca/insnumregnum-eng . I don’t know that you get any extra protection by registering both ways but at least do one or the other. This should block the calls for 5 years and is worth the effort. Now, imagine an evening spent enjoying the last warmth of fall. The phone doesn’t ring. You haven’t won anything but you have registered for the right to enjoy the peace and satisfaction of a few quiet moments in your life. Rewards for the Fall Harvest The days are golden, the weather is crisp, the harvest is in and after a good dinner what could be a better reward than a fine glass of scotch? Smoking is out now so pick good single malt and enjoy it. But, with all those odd sounding names where does one begin? The distinctive variety in the taste of the single malts is what sets them a part from the scotch blends like Chivas or Ballantine’s. The blends strive for more uniform flavour but tend to lose character in the process. Single malts are more of an adventure. The surge in interest in single malts is one of the reasons that companies like Seagram's have been buying up the smaller, more distinctive labels. The scotch distillers are generally concentrated in four main areas of Scotland which are associated with flavour or “nose” characteristics. Wrap your hand around a glass of one of these: Highland (including ISLAND) – the largest geographic area hosts whisky that is known for a smoky or peaty flavour. These are often an acquired taste with a full scent something like woolly socks. Try Dalwhinnie, Talisker, Highland Park or Oban. These are smooth, smoky and robust. Lowland – mild, mellow and delicate whisky. Glenkinchie is a charming choice.

SEPTEMBER DATES FOR PHYSICIAN CLINICS IN EASTEND TBA To book an appointment Phone 295-4184 Monday - Friday, 8:00 AM-4:00 PM.

Speyside – an area by the North coast that is home to the largest number of distillers. Known for light, complex, smooth and challenging scotch. AnCnoc, Balvenie Doublewood (aged in sherry casks), Longmorn (a Seagram's distiller), Glenfiddich, Glenlivet. Islay – and island of intense, peaty and oily varieties like Bowmore.

Did you know….

It is possible to be naturally immune to Pasteurella pestis and HIV, the viruses that cause 2 well-known wide spread killers, The Black Plague and AIDS. This is thanks to a genetic mutation in ones DNA called CCR5-delta 32, or Delta 32 for short. This mutation cuts off the means for a virus, to attach to our white blood cells and enter the immune system. It must come from both parents to cause immunity, but if in possession of only one chromosome for delta-32 it is likely to delay the virus from spreading for long periods of time. This mutation isn't known to ever have a negative effect on any individual, only positive.

Astronomy on the Edge The density of Saturn is around 0.687 grams per cubic centimetre, low enough that it would float on water. The speed with which Saturn completes one rotation is so high that it ends up flattening itself. It has 60 moons and in the ancient times the rings were thought to have been the moons of the planet. Saturn has no solid surface and the day is only 10 hours and 35 minutes long. It takes almost 30 years for the planet to complete one revolution around the sun and during these 30 years there are times when the rings around the planet seem to have disappeared. Saturn in horoscopes represents hard work and discipline. There are theories that Saturn is astrologically a powerful planet and it is used as an advertising tool by many corporations like: Nike (that Nike logo represents Saturn's ring), cars, oil companies etc. The planet was named after the Roman god of agriculture, Saturn. The god Saturn was father of: Neptune, Pluto, Jupiter and Ceres. And, Saturday was also named after the Roman god Saturn. Saturn is one of the five planets that are visible from the Earth with the naked eye (to see the actual rings you will have to find yourself a decent telescope).
