H

olidays in Austria. We are delighted to present you with our Destination Austria Travel Manual 2009. It is the most comprehensive and complete reference guide for travel to and within Austria. This publication incorporates a detailed listing of Australian and New Zealand travel companies selling a large product range of Austrian

holiday experiences – from city stays to Danube cruises, musical/cultural packages and walking or cycling tours – all designed to exploring Austria’s diverse landscapes and unique cultural offerings. It also includes flight information, travel tips, accommodation guides and features handy listings like a website directory, distance charts and chapters on rail travel as well as a coloured map of our country. In 2009 Austria celebrates Haydn Year, commemorating the 200th anniversary of the death of the Austrian composer Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) and Linz, the city on the Danube, takes centre stage as European Capital of Culture. 40 % of our guests visit Austria during the winter months – reason enough to dedicate this year’s edition to focus on winter in the “Heart of Europe”. Have you always dreamed of a White Christmas? Would you like to smell the scent of beeswax candles on a Christmas market and warm your hands holding a bag full of roasted chestnuts? Winter in Austria is a magical time both in our cities and in the Alps. Skiing is a way of life for many Austrians and our country offers 22.000 km of groomed slopes in hundreds of skiresorts, many of them world famous destinations and our snow covered mountains are home to 43 World Champions in this sport. Exploring local culinary delights has become a favourite activity for many travellers and with this in mind we are introducing you to a selection of dishes and beverages best experienced when temperatures are low. They warm you from the inside and with their sweet or savoury flavour you will find out what winter in Austria tastes like. I cordially welcome you to my home-country and your next holiday – it’s got to be Austria. Enjoy the journey, Astrid Mulholland-Licht Director Australia/New Zealand Cover image: Innsbruck - from the city center to the mountain tops at 2300m in just 20 minutes.

It’s this time of the year... ...when the days are getting shorter and the first snow fall covers mountains and valleys – Austria’s tradition, winter activities and Christmas magic are coming alive.

Alps is over, join the Aprés-Ski “Made in Austria” whether with a mug of Glühwein in one of the hip Aprés-Ski bars, or comfortably cozy in front of an open fire place with a good glass of Austria’s great red wines such as Zirpfandler or Rotgipfler.

Which way to the Christmas markets? When Christmas arrives it’s not only the children’s eyes that light up. In every corner of the country

Gulasch-soup. It is simply the universal Austrian comfort-food! It can be the typical midnight snack after a long night out - especially during or after one of the famous Viennese Balls - or just a light meal in between. You will notice that a homemade Gulasch-soup is on every menu. With its slightly spicy sweet taste and little pieces of meat and potatoes it is just the perfect dish for any time of day or night.

Danube Cruises Including Christmas & New Year's Cruises

The legendary Danube Nothing introduces you better to the delights of Austria like a trip down the Danube, where its banks are rich with history, cultural treasures and sunlit vineyards. t is 7 o’clock in the morning on a beautiful Austrian summer day and you are already up on the

I

sundeck of your vessel to admire the surrounding scenery. On the way through the enchanting

river valley you pass nameable cities such as Linz - European Capital of Culture 2009, ancient castles perched up on high cliffs, historical villages - some so small you need to walk as cars aren’t allowed and green grapevines ripening under a baking sun. You cruise along the 900-year old Benedictine Abbey of Melk at the entrance to the World Cultural Heritage Region Wachau before you go ashore in Dürnstein where you walk through medieval

2

cobblestone streets and discover the magnificent blue façade of the baroque Stiftskirche. Wet your appetite! When you close your eyes you can observe and enjoy the aroma of the well known Wachau apricot. From the fruit gardens along the river, locals produce tempting goodies such as jams and fruit-jellies, Schnapps, or cakes and sell them in their little shops or at the local farmers markets. Winemaking in the area around the river Danube can be traced back to the Celtic times. Try one of the famous Austrian wines produced in this area such as the Grüner Veltliner or Riesling in one of the inviting wine-taverns or on board of your vessel while the scenery is passing by. Soon you will arrive in the heart of Austria’s capital city Vienna. The Danube metropolis with its inviting coffee houses, classical music and charming atmosphere is not only the most loved city of world famous musicians and composers, with its Imperial Palaces, old trams and charismatic locals it will for sure make your Danube cruise an unforgettable experience.

Unique Austria According to the route planner, it is just 675km between Lake Neusiedel in the East and Bregenz in the West.

B

ut in between, a compact, small country, delightful to see and easy to get to know awaits you!

The scenery is spectacular around every corner and ranges from Alpine peaks and their icy world of glaciers in the West to vineyards, ancient castles, venerable abbeys and wooded hills rising out of the lush farmland in the East. Austria is old… and yet Austria is new. Nowhere else can you see gothic buildings such as St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna next to a postmodern glass facade like the one of the Haas Haus.

2

3

“The Heart of Europe” - as Austria is often referred to - also has the worldwide reputation as being synonymous with culture. You can enjoy concerts and performances in just about every small village. Event calendars of bigger towns and cities fill entire books and festivals are an integral part of cultural life. A journey through Austria is also a great experience for your taste-buds. Every region has its own distinct culinary features and specialties and some areas in the country’s east and south are famous for their wines, like Grüner Veltliner or Blauer Zweigelt. Eat and drink as the Austrians do – they have a passion for it that is contagious.

1. Spring time in Austria's country side 2. St. Stephen's Cathedral next to the Haas Haus, Vienna 3. Meet the locals at the Kunsthalle Vienna

Tiroler Gröstl. This specialty was traditionally a meal of leftovers. However, today Tiroler Gröstl only consists of the best ingredients – potatoes and cubes of roast pork, lightly browned with onions in a pan. Travel Practicalities

Christmas Cookies. In Austria Christmas time without homemade Christmas Cookies would be unimaginable. Young and old family members are coming together and create the most delicious Christmas cookies for the Festive Season. Practically the whole country becomes a big "bakehouse"

Useful Information

*

CLOTHING. During winter warm clothing is essential as are closed waterresistant shoes. If you are at an altitude of 1800 metres or more carry proper protection against cold weather and wear sturdy walking boots. Note that in higher regions winter may last until May. In spring and autumn a light coat, long-sleeved top or jumper is advisable. Summer in Austria can be very hot with late afternoon thunderstorms.

*

CURRENCY & EXCHANGE. The EURO (€) is the official currency in Austria. If your banking card features the Maestro or Cirrus symbol it can be used for withdrawing money from Austrian cash machines. There is usually a fee charged for this, please check with your bank. Credit cards are widely accepted, though some restaurants and shops in regional areas may only accept cash. Foreign currency and travellers cheques may be exchanged at banks and foreign exchange offices. Banks in Austria are closed on the weekends but exchange offices at airports and major city rail terminals are open 7 days a week.

*

CUSTOMS. Travellers residing in a country such as Australia or New Zealand which are outside of the European Union (EU) are not liable to pay duty on personal articles for their own use or for performing their business tasks. Those over 17 years of age may carry up to 200 cigarettes or 50 cigars or 250 grams of tobacco, 1 litre of distilled liquor and 2 litres of wine or beer. Duty-free purchases are no longer possible for direct flights within the EU and travellers may not combine their duty allowances. Some items are subject to special restrictions. www.austria.org.au

*

ELECTRICITY. The electric current in Austria is 220 volts AC at 50 cycles per second which suits most Australian/New Zealand small electrical appliances and computer equipment. You will need a two-pin Europe adaptor.

*

ENTRY VISA. Holders of an Australian or New Zealand passport do not need a visa if their stay in Austria does not exceed 3 months. Information on work permits can be obtained from the nearest Austrian Consulate or the Austrian Embassy in Canberra. No inoculations are required for visitors from Australia/New Zealand. www.austria.org.au

*

INTERNET & E-MAIL. Internet in Austria is fast and efficient with internet cafés commonplace in major cities and resorts. Newer and larger hotels are equipped with modern outlets in their rooms or have business centres which have the necessary connections for you to take your notebook computer with you. To avoid excess phone charges when using your own connection check with your service provider if they have local access numbers for Austria.

* *

LANGUAGE. German is the official language in Austria but English is widely understood and spoken by most people working in tourism-related jobs. MOBILE PHONES. Most Austrians own a mobile phone (Handy) and they are by far the most popular means of telecommunication. Your Australian or New Zealand mobile phone should work in Austria if you have global roaming activated, please check with your service provider.
