8th Grade Graduation Committee Report The 8th grade account was opened and there will be a transfer of 10% from the

following fundraisers-Dress Down Day, Cheese Cake Sale. The 8th Grade account gets the full proceeds from the Candy Apple Sale and the Daily Snack Sale. The checks have not arrived yet and there needs to be a committee member added to the account as a check signer The Assembly went well and there will another one planned for January. Class officers will be identified for this year. Ms. Allen runs a student council on Mondays with approx. 20 current 8th graders. They are planning to run elections for 7th grade officers in the spring. The 8th Grade is looking for a graduation speaker.

Dr. Ackerman was suggested.

Ms. Allen is planning the class trip to Washington. The Graduation Committee is looking for a DJ for the 8th grade Valentines Day Dance. Please forward any names to the Committee. There are plans in the works for a spring Talent/Fashion Show. ordinate with Home and School.

The 8th grade submitted a new entry for the blog. Great Job 8th Grade Committee! Membership VotesMeeting Dates-. ** No longer an issue, the Roundtable meeting dates have changed. Dress Down Day-Vote on whether to charge $1.00 or $2.00. The Home and School Association Members voted unanimously to change the fee to $1.00 with adult participation voluntary. Picture Day is on January 14th. We need a home and school volunteer to coordinate this. Involves co-coordinating the order forms to be sent to students, collection and recording of $ beforehand. The day of at least two volunteers to organize the picture taking-matching students up with their numbers, calling the classrooms down to have their pictures taken and keeping the line moving smoothly. Colleen will help with picture day from 8am until 10am Toni offered to help also, all or most of the day. Wish list Sue asked for $50 from H& S to purchase some items off of the wish list before the end of the fall semester. Orna will bring down the tree that she made for Mr. Shellenberger’s Class to act as a “giving tree” during the week of conferences. We will post the wish list next to it and put “leaves” on the tree to represent items on the wish list. Parents can then take the leaves as a reminder to purchase items for the classrooms. Sue will then use the $50 to purchase some items that have not been provided. Home and School Elections-We need to have an election for officers in the spring. There is no information in the Home and School Council by-law dictating when elections are to be held. Only that they be held every two years (officers are

elected to run for 2 year terms.) I suggest having nominations in March, at the meeting in April and having the place during meetings. People need to School Association (meaning paid dues)

Having the candidates speak or be presented election in May. All of this will take be a current member of the Kearny Home and in order to vote.

New Business; LaTonta spoke to Ms. Allen about the possibility of the 5th and 6th graders running the store as an extra credit project. We will need to take an inventory of supplies and decide on prices of items. Dineth spoke with Mary Javelin from the Billy Joel Foundation, who pays for one bus for the Orchestra Trips. Dineth is trying to find out whether that is one bus per trip of one bus per year. Mary would like to visit Kearny to give a presentation to H&S on the wide variety of services that our students revieve from the orchestra. The Philadelphia Opera Company (?) is performing an opera about the holocaust. One of the Kindergarten parents brought this to Home and School as a possible trip. Orna and Toni are working on the logistics. There was a lively discussion about providing the upper class students with a “career” day or a series of career field trips. Especially focused on trade opportunities. A possible field trip to Dobbins school or to possibly visit local artist/ craftsman/ tradesperson places of business in the area. Have people come and present alternative careers (chef, carpenter, electrician, etc..) then students can sign up to visit places of business in the area that interest them.
