WINERY FEATURE WINE COUNTRY THIS WEEK
CARINA CELLARS By Dave Wilcox
Q
uirky, colorful and sure to get your attention, the Carina Cellars tasting notes are worth a few extra minutes of perusing as you linger at the winery’s downtown Los Olivos tasting bar. Where else will you find a Cabernet Sauvignon described as combining the “sultry femininity of Jessica Rabbit (with) the classic grace of Jackie O?” Carina Cellars’ wines themselves have been garnering a lot of attention since a transplanted tax attorney from the Deep South teamed in 2002 with an accomplished winemaker with deep roots in the region. David Hardee moved to Santa Barbara in 1996 upon retiring from a successful, 20year law practice on the East Coast. An avid traveler and wine collector, Hardee soon realized that Santa Barbara County could produce world-class Rhône varietals of which he was especially fond. He said he became involved with the wine community and – as one who always enjoyed learning the technical aspects of winemaking – started meeting and hearing

about various winemakers. Enter Joey Tensley. By the time they met, Tensley was already establishing his reputation for making some of the region’s finest Syrahs, released under the Tensley label. While Carina’s program involves more varieties than Tensley’s exclusive Syrah focus, the two shared a interest in Rhône varietals. Thus was born Carina Cellars, named for Hardee’s sailboat, which he said “is the love of my life.” Prior to bottling wine under his own label, Tensley honed his craft as assistant winemaker at Babcock Vineyards and Beckman Winery. He credits Brian Babcock for instilling a philosophy that “great wine comes from great grapes.” Indeed, as Carina’s winemaker, Tensley continues to fashion terroir-driven wines using grapes from some of the top vineyards in Santa Ynez and the Santa Maria Valley. Carina’s 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon is made with fruit sourced from Napa Valley’s Robert Craig Vineyard. While Carina sources fruit from various vineyards, Tensley said he and Hardee maintain a “hands-on” approach. Hardee, www.winecountrythisweek.com
for example, was recently in Napa to inspect the vineyard Carina uses for its Cabernet Sauvignon. Using fruit from skillfully managed, sustainable vineyards, Tensley then grooms wines that enables those vines to express themselves in the bottle. “Staying away and let the wine make itself,” is how he puts it. The wines have drawn impressive reviews from some of the industry’s top critics, including Robert Parker, Jr. He awarded 91 points to Carina’s 2004 Syrah “7 Percent” – a blend made up of 93 percent Syrah from Colson Canyon Vineyard and seven percent Viognier, a classic example of the Côte-Rôtie blend made in the northern Rhône Valley. Parker called the wine “stunningly complex” with “beautiful purity, depth and length.” While Carina produces a number of vineyard-designate Syrahs and Viogniers, the winery is also known for its impressive blends, such as the “7 Percent.” “Our blends are what’s been our up-andcoming thing,” said Jody Brownell, Carina’s national sales manager.

Among those is the “Iconoclast,” an unusual marrying of about two-thirds Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley and one-third Syrah from Colson Canyon Vineyard. Then there is “Clairvoyant,” a Syrah, Grenache and Mourvedre blend. Carina Cellars has evolved steadily since its inception. The boutique winery bottled about 2,000 cases in 2002. That number grew to 4,000 in 2006. A dynamic future awaits. “We are in a growing mode,” said Brownell, pointing out distribution of Carina wines encompasses California and a number of select states nationwide. “We are doing great. It’s time to take the next steps.” Hardee purchased an 83-acre ranch on Paso Robles’ Westside and has planted 16 acres, with plans for a winery and tasting room at the Adelaida Road site already drawn up. He also envisions a network of caves and was recently in Napa investigating the caves at wineries there. The Paso Robles site is now planted to Syrah, Mourvedre and Grenache. Even though those vines won’t be productive for another few years, fruit from a nearby vineyard are being used this year to make a Zinfandel, said Tensley. Hardee decided to start making some wine using grapes from Paso Robles, said Tensley, to “get accustomed with the area.” The Carina Cellars tasting room is in downtown Los Olivos at 2900 Grand Ave. Suite A. To get there, turn on Grand Avenue, then make a left at the flagpole. It’s open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Regular tastings are $10. Visit Carina’s website at carinacellars.com to obtain a coupon.

New Tasting Room & Sculpture Garden in Paso Robles Sculpterra sculpts the land, sculpts the vines and sculpts the grapes to create an ultra-premium bottle of wine. Growing up in the lower east side of Manhattan Island, Warren Frankel never imagined that he would one day be a grape grower, raising a family and building a medical practice in the oak-covered rolling hills of Paso Robles, California. It was after 25 years of schooling and medical studies that Warren began to sense the yearnings to feel the dirt beneath his feet and to harvest a crop off the land. After opening his medical practice in the San Fernando Valley in Southern California he began to take his desire for a simpler and more self-reliant lifestyle seriously. In 1979, Dr. Frankel moved his family and medical practice to a beautiful 90 acre ranch located in the Linne Valley of Paso Robles. The Frankel family first planted 20 acres of pistachios’ on the ranch, followed by 20 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. After the initial success of the Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard, Dr. Frankel expanded his plantings and vineyard acreage in 1997, adding 80 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon, 10 acres of Zinfandel and 10 acres of Merlot. Cabernet Franc, Mouvedre, Petite Sirah and Viognier are the most recent additions to the vineyard. The Linne Valley is slightly sheltered, creating a unique microclimate with plenty of Paso Robles sunshine, but slightly less heat than other locations in the appellation. The Frankel estate grapes are cultivated to promote intense, varietal flavors that can then be sculpted in the cellar into a final artistic statement. Meticulous winemaking practices allow for wines that are full-bodied, rich, and expressive. Sculpterra Winery has combined wine and art with a wonderful line-up of wines and an original sculpture garden open free to the public during business hours and by appointment. The winery’s sculpture garden features larger-than-life works in bronze and granite by sculptor John Jagger. Dr. Frankel’s appreciation for sculpture began more than forty years ago while spending a summer traveling Europe. Hitchhiking Dr. Warren Frankel
10
from Bergen, Norway through the fjords to Oslo, he stumbled upon Frogner Park, which exhibited the complete life collection of sculptor Gustav Vigeland. Dr. Frankel is now pleased to share his love of sculpture and wine with the public. The Winery Tasting Room and Sculpture Garden located just a few minutes from Paso Robles, is scheduled to open in late September and will offer visitors an exceptional wine and art experience. A portion of the proceeds from the sales of Sculpterra wines are donated to the “His Healing Hands” foundation, a medical missionary organization. The organization sends medical missionary teams on short-term trips across the world to assist people of all ages, races and creed that need urgent medical care due to catastrophic events or extreme poverty. When time allows, Dr. Frankel enjoys riding the family horses through the vineyards with his wife, thankful for the beauty that graces his vineyards and for being able to make “Wine that Gladdens the Heart” to share with others. Sculpterra Winery & Sculpture Garden is located at 5125 Linne Road in Paso Robles. The Winery Tasting Room and Sculpture Gardens are open Thursday through Saturday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; closed Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years Day and Easter. From Highway 101 South, take the Spring St. exit and turn right onto Niblick Road. Go straight on Niblick Road until it turns into Sherwood Road, travel straight until the road turns into a right hand turn on Fontana Road. The road will then turn left and become Linne Road. Follow Linne Road for 2 miles and then turn right at the Sculpterra Winery signage. From Highway 101 North, take the 16th. St. exit and turn left onto Riverside Ave. Take the next left on 13th St., which will turn into Creston Road. Take a left onto Sherwood Road at the Niblick Road and Creston Road intersection, travel straight until the road turns into a right hand turn on Fontana Road. The road will then turn left and become Linne Road. Follow Linne Road for 2 miles and then turn right at the winery gates at the Sculpterra Winery signage. Foley Wine Group Acquires Firestone Vineyard The Firestone family recently announced the acquisition of Firestone Vineyard by the Foley Wine Group, which is owned by William P. Foley, proprietor of Foley Estates Vineyard & Winery and Lincourt Vineyards in Santa Barbara County. The acquisition includes the Firestone Vineyard and Prosperity Wines brands, along with the Santa Ynez Valley winery and 480 acres of land, inclusive of 380 vineyard acres. The Firestone family retains ownership of Curtis Winery, Firestone Walker Brewing Company and the new family winery in Paso Robles. The family is also retaining the Jarhead Red and Rock Hollow wine brands, as well as 400 acres of land in the Santa Ynez Valley,
inclusive of 215 vineyard acres. “This is a matter of the right person expressing interest at the right time for us,” said Brooks Firestone, founder of Firestone Vineyard. “Bill Foley is a neighbor and friend of ours, and we are confident that he will be a fine steward of the Firestone Vineyard legacy and tradition.” Firestone added, “While this was a tough and emotional decision for us, we are energized by the opportunity to more closely focus on our other winemaking and brewing enterprises on the Central Coast, including Curtis Winery, Firestone Walker Brewing Company and our new family winery in Paso Robles.” Firestone Vineyard will be enfolded into Foley’s small port-
folio of high-quality estate wineries. No significant changes are anticipated in the operations, staffing or distribution of Firestone Vineyard wines. “This is the first in a series of brand acquisitions with the goal of developing a multi-brand sales strategy,” Foley said. “Currently, we are also examining opportunities in Sonoma County, Napa County and the states of Oregon and Washington.” Firestone Vineyard was founded in 1972 as Santa Barbara County’s first estate winery. William Foley established his Lincourt Vineyards in the Santa Ynez Valley in 1996 and opened Foley Estates Winery in the nearby Santa Rita Hills in 2005. The Firestone family’s relationship with Foley dates back 10 years, when Foley acquired the J. Carey Cellars property from the Firestone family in 1997, which became Lincourt Vineyards. Adam Firestone will continue in his role as co-proprietor of Firestone Walker Brewing Company. Andrew Firestone will continue to manage the family’s Paso Robles winery. He will direct the re-naming and rebranding of the winery in a manner that honors the family’s local winemaking traditions while incorporating new ideas and concepts. Chuck Carlson will continue in his role as winemaker of Curtis Winery, which is being retained by the Firestone family. Brooks Firestone will continue to serve his constituents as 3rd district supervisor for the County of Santa Barbara.

KENNETH VOLK VINEYARDS by Dave Wilcox
A
red-tailed hawk swoops low then, catching an updraft, glides gracefully to the top of a brush-covered ridge that rises above a dry creek and provides the backdrop for Kenneth Volk Vineyards. The raptor’s screech is the only sound piercing the summer afternoon’s quiet on the east side of the Santa Maria Valley. Although Volk’s winery feels hidden, it is actually only a brief detour off the Foxen Canyon wine trail that links Los Olivos with the Santa Maria Valley. And any trip to sample wines created by Ken Volk is well worth navigating. Since starting Wild Horse Winery in Templeton more than 25 years ago, Volk has earned a well-deserved reputation as one of the Central Coast’s premier winemakers. Using fruit cultivated at some of the prized vineyards of Santa Maria Valley and the Paso Robles area, Volk is producing a stable of wines that include Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon, along with less well-known varietals he refers to as “heirloom” wines. Volk purchased the old Byron winery and launched a number of renovations. He continues to refurbish the buildings, while the outdoor areas are a testament to his
14
gardening skills and eye for landscaping. A picnic spot in the front is lushly landscaped with native plants that lure hummingbirds and butterflies. At the rear of the building are a couple of grassy areas – including one where a recent bocce ball match recently concluded – and shaded tables overlooking Tepusquet Creek, which runs dry most of the year. Again, native sages and other plants have replaced the poison oak that had covered the steeply pitched banks above the creek when Volk purchased the site. The tasting room is just that – not a gift www.winecountrythisweek.com
shop, not a deli, nor a bookstore. It’s a cozy, wood-paneled setting with a tile floor whose sole focus is the tasting bar, where recently guests sampled from a menu featuring seven varietals, ranging from a Chardonnay aged only in stainless steel to a medium-bodied Merlot. There was also a Negrette, one of the aforementioned heirloom wines Volk produces, a grape reminiscent of Pinot Noir and Syrah. Besides the Kenneth Volk Vineyards label, Volk also produces value-oriented wines under the Aqua Pumpkin label. Volk said he’s gearing up what he calls a “non-traditional” wine club for loyal customers. Instead of simply signing up club members and then shipping them a predetermined set of wines, Volk is establishing a program suited to each customer’s preferences. “I’d rather send the person what they really want.” Kenneth Volk Vineyards winery is located at 5230 Tepusquet Road west of Santa Maria. The tasting room is open daily from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. There is a $5 tasting fee. There are detailed directions to the winery on Volk’s witty and informative website, www.volkwines.com, or you can call the winery at (805) 938-7896.

Paso Robles Harvest Wine Tour Weekend Set for October 19-21 Wineries Open Doors to Wine Enthusiasts During The Most Colorful Time Of The Year Paso Robles Wine Country, along California’s scenic Central Coast, is already gearing up for the pinnacle of the wine growing season – harvest. In preparation, the Alliance announced that the annual Paso Robles Wine
Country Harvest Wine Tour weekend will take place October 19, 20 and 21, 2007. This threeday celebration is a combination of individual events held at more than 100 wineries throughout Paso Robles Wine Country. Consumers are invited to attend winemaker dinners, special barrel tastings, harvest
demonstrations, special tours, art and musical appearances and much more. Check the website, www.pasowine.com, for a complete list of activities. Harvest is the most colorful time of the year when warm days and cool nights are abuzz with activity. The vineyards have changed color, blanketing the landscape in red and gold. Scents of ripened fruit surround you and the echos of celebration from a hard year’s work fill the air. The Alliance invites you to attend the upcoming Harvest Wine Tour, October 19, 20 and 21, 2007. The Paso Robles Wine Country Alliance represents wineries, growers and businesses in Paso Robles Wine Country, California’s fastest growing wine region. It encompasses more than 26,000 vineyard acres and more than 170 wineries. In the last six years, the number of bonded wineries in Paso Robles Wine Country has more than tripled from 50 to 170, mostly due to an influx of boutique and small familyowned vineyards and wineries. The appellation’s burgeoning reputation has enticed well known California wineries from other wine regions, such as Firestone Vineyard and Turley Wine Cellars, to make sizeable investments in Paso Robles, and also seduced a number of winemakers from other countries eager to find New World applications for their winemaking skills. Recently, a friend of mine admitted that he knows nothing about wine or what makes one wine better than another. He was clearly frustrated that he could not communicate exactly what it is he likes or dislikes in a wine. When he tastes something that he does find appealing, the only descriptive word he can conjure up is “smooth.” I explained that learning to appreciate fine wine is a process that can take years. The good news is that it involves tasting a great number of wines. Unfortunately for him, he simply didn’t drink wine often enough to build a mental database of wines and their flavor profiles to draw comparisons among wines. The first requirement of a fine wine is to be true to the grape varietal and a key aspect in the appreciation of fine wine is learning to identify the characteristic flavors and components in the popular varietals – the individual fruit flavors, level of sweetness, acidity or tannin. Over time, you learn what to expect from a Cabernet Sauvignon versus a Pinot Noir, for example. And evaluating how they all play out on your palate is part of this step. Once you get comfortable with identifying varietal flavors and components, teach yourself to think about the wine’s individual personality, or style. When tasting, keep in mind contrasting descriptions like these; balanced or unbalanced components, lingering finish or short finish, powerful or bland, lively or dull, complex or onedimensional, elegant or plain, and don’t forget, – smooth or coarse. Ask yourself if any of these words describe the wine’s style, or think of some of your own. Then store your experience in your wine memory bank. The next time you taste a Cabernet Sauvignon, for example, think back to your impressions of previous tastings of Cabernets. Is your general impression better, worse or the same as most other Cabernets that you’ve tasted? To some, the steps of learning, confirming, and comparing may seem difficult, but it really is easier than it appears. If you taste with focus and frequency, you will eventually become more discriminating in your wine opinions and more eloquent than my good friend who finds his favorite wines to always be “smooth.”

Paso Robles WestFest 2007 O CALIF RNIA
46 WEST
WestFest 2007 is the fourth annual Wine and Blues Festival, with major sponsorship from Hampton Inns and Suites, Grapeline Express, Canyon Villa Bed & Breakfast, and Farm Credit West, Fog Catcher Inn and Best Western Fireside Inn, which is produced by the Hwy 46 West Wineries in Paso Robles, California. The event this year will be held Saturday, September 8th at Peachy Canyon Winery located off of Highway 46 West on Bethel Road. Your ticket entitles you to wine club discounts at all participating wineries for the entire weekend, and admission to the festival to hear Rockin’ Blues. The centerpiece of the weekend is the festival where each winery will pour their awardwinning wines. Your ticket also becomes your raffle number for great gifts including two six-liter wine bottles etched and hand-painted with the WestFest logo. Over three hundred guests coming from as far away as Washington State attended the first annual event. The event has limited seating and tickets are sold in advance by the participating wineries. Time, price, food and entertainment to be announced.
About Highway 46 West Wineries Group In 2004, thirteen wineries on Highway 46 West formed the Highway 46 West Wineries Group. This group was formed to promote the tasting rooms of the beautiful west side and to make people aware of the uniqueness of 46 West and the wines produced there. Paso Robles Wine Country is as unique and inviting as the people who have dedicated themselves to nurturing the vineyards and crafting fine wines. Visitors to Highway 46 West find the road less traveled is often marked by the thrill of discovery in this uncongested region. It’s an area where hospitality is first among a long list of qualities … where being friends and neighbors is as important as producing stellar wines. Highway 46 West is one thread that weaves among the vineyards and wineries connecting longtime estates with exciting new producers. Rolling hills, majestic oaks and lush vineyards await the wine lover at every turn. The tasting rooms of Highway 46 West invite you to enjoy our neighborhood, relax under the spell of our friendly environment and savor life while sipping our spectacular wines. The participating wineries consist of Brian Benson Cellars, Castoro Cellars, Dark Star Cellars, Doce Robles, Eagle Castle, Fratelli Perata, Grey Wolf, Hunt Cellars, JanKris Winery, Midnight Cellars, Peachy Canyon, Windward Vineyard and Rotta Winery and are all included on the 46 West Passport. The passport is your map to the Westside, including descriptions and hours for each winery. Just like a travel passport you will get a unique stamp from each winery. Once you get seven stamps you will receive a beautifully designed poster of all the participating wineries labels. When your passport is full with all thirteen stamps, your gift is another poster signed by all of the winemakers and entry into a quarterly drawing for prizes from a weekend stay at one of the groups hotel sponsors to a guided tasting tour. Throughout the year the group puts on other events such as Tax Revolt Weekend and West Fest. West Fest is the big event of the year. All thirteen wineries come together to pour great wines while guests listen to blues music and enjoy delicious food from local caterers. For more information, check out the 46 West Wineries website at www.paso46westwineries.com.

Still Waters Vineyards – A Visit to the Ranch Paul Hoover might describe himself first and foremost as a farmer, but it is when he takes his love for growing things and applies it to the crafting of his award-winning wines for Still Waters Vineyards that his true genius is apparent. “I consider myself first a wine grower because I’m passionate about agriculture, but with winemaking I get to enjoy the entire process, from growing the finest fruit to seeing it to the end with the production of great wine. I want to stay small because I feel the hands-on approach allows you work with the wine during the whole process and really put my signature and touch on the wines. For example, it’s unusual for winery of my size to make twelve different types of wine including five whites.” As a graduate of nearby Cal Poly, Paul initially took his degree in agriculture and entered the resort and restaurant business. The call of the fields was strong, though and after a number of successful years in that business, Paul and his wife Patricia followed their hearts and bought a vineyard. The vineyard is located in an area with soils and climate perfect for growing premium wine grapes. The ranch sits high atop hills that slope gently from the north to the south, giving the vines the perfect exposure to the summer sun as it rises and sets over the Templeton Gap. The setting is also perfect for people. If it’s a glimpse of the magnificence of California that you seek, the breathtaking panoramic view of acres of lush vines and rolling, golden hills
CHATEAU MARGENE A micro winery specializing in the production of small lots of luxury, handcrafted Cabernet Sauvignon. Chateau Margene produces 3,000 cases per year and focuses on viticulture and winemaking practices that offer maximum expression of the Paso Robles terrior. Come enjoy the wines and picnic on the deck or under the oaks.
available at Still Waters Vineyards is second to none. This is truly a place of unsurpassed beauty and many of taken advantage of the setting for their weddings and parties. This is not your average tasting room either. Says Paul, “My resort background drew me to this site because of the unique opportunity to create both an indoor and outdoor setting for tasting room guests, which includes a picnic area underneath the 100-year-old olive grove from which we produce our gourmet Spanish olive oil.” On Sundays, Paul fires up the BBQ and offers tasty treats that pair perfectly with his bold reds. Visitors are also encouraged to help themselves to the fresh grown vegetables from Paul and Patricia’s garden. At Still Waters Vineyards you can truly taste, smell and witness the passion for growing things that has helped Paul and Patricia Hoover realize their dreams.

Arroyo Grande Valley Harvest Festival’s 70th Year The theme for this year’s Arroyo Grande Valley Harvest Festival “Harvesting Family and Friends.” The festival is held each year in the heart of the historic Village of Arroyo Grande, the perfect setting for turning back the hands of time. Located in the center of the Village is the Ag Pavilion, which will include booths and displays by many of the local farmers. The South County Historical Society will have members dressed in turn-of-the-century costumes and will have activities in and around the museum and Santa Manuela School House. When you walk through this area, it will be like stepping back in time. The Santa Manuela School House will be the site of the annual spelling bee. There’s also the annual costume contest, so everyone is encouraged to show up in western, harvest or turn-of-the century costumes. There is fun for all with a business decorating contest; baking, pie and canning contest; scarecrow contest; chili and salsa contests as well as vegetable decorating, biggest pumpkin, pie eating, nail driving and even cow chip throwing. Contests are held during the festival as well as the week leading up to the festival. And beware of the Harvest Festival Sheriff and her Deputy. costume will be thrown in the Hoosgow (jail). This jail was built by the local Lion’s Club and is made of sturdy steel. There’s no breaking out! If you want to stay out of jail, you can purchase a Harvest Festival button for $1. The Harvest Festival button also puts you in the drawing for more than 50 great gifts that have been donated by local businesses. The Festival’s Scarecrow Contest, sponsored by the Arroyo Grande Chamber of Commerce, is a favorite among all ages. This year scarecrows will be on display at Mid State Bank & Trust on Grand Avenue and Mullahey Ford on Traffic Way. Entries are due by September 17th. Creators are encouraged to be as creative as possible. There are lots of events and activities for kids, from the young children to the older teens. For the young children, there will be a bounce house, pony rides, petting zoo and a train ride. A horse drawn carriage will travel through the Village taking riders on an old fashioned ride around the area. For the real young ones, the diaper derby always provides some exciting competition. By overwhelming demand we will be ending the festival on Saturday with the Children’s Parade led by President Lincoln and Ballooney the Clown. The Santa Maria Arts Council has a number of programs to support the arts in our community, and has distributed more than $175,000 to 300 students through its scholarship program. In addition to the well known and respected artists mentioned above the Arts Council juried in Philip Fleischer, Sharon Foster, Hattie Stoddard, Julie Steyer, Autumn Jennings and Steve Kennington. Art enthusiasts and collectors are invited to attend the festivities and auction that close the exhibit, which has been ongoing since August 10. This is the sixth in a series of juried assemblage shows open to local artists, both professional and amateur. This year the theme is musical instruments and participants were challenged to incorporate a diverse array of musical objects and parts into their artwork. While the object in common establishes a unifying theme for the show, it also exemplifies the unique creativity of the individual artists. Past objects have included cigar boxes, tin film canisters, old books, picture frames and tile. A panel of judges will award three cash prizes for the most inspired integration of the scavenged elements. Entries are limited to one per artist, and 52 artists are participating this year. All artwork is available for sale to the public through an ongoing silent auction and successful bidders can claim their art at the end of the event. The popular artist packages will be auctioned again this year in which a patron is treated to an extra-special evening of wining and dining local artists Tony Askew, Barbara McIntyre, Ron
Robertson, Dug Uyesaka and Patricia Chidlaw, as well as a tour of the David Bermant Collection of kenetic art. Proceeds benefit both the participating artists and Art From Scrap’s art and environmental education programs. Admission to the show and the September 15th reception is free to the public. The AFS Gallery is located upstairs at Art From Scrap, 302 E. Cota Street in Santa Barbara. Gallery hours are Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Thursday until 6 p.m. For further information, call (805) 884-0459 x15.
