WINERY FEATURE WINE COUNTRY THIS WEEK
MINASSIAN-YOUNG A Zinfandel Love Story by Dave Wilcox
D
avid Young is only a few years older than the prized Zinfandel vines growing on the steep hillside west of Paso Robles where his Minassian-Young Winery is located, but the 30-year-old has already spent almost half his life learning to make handcrafted wines. Unlike so many other vintners who pursue winemaking after succeeding in some other career, Young knew from an early age that he wanted to be involved in the wine industry. Spending summers as a teenager working as a cellar rat in Napa sparked an abiding passion for winemaking that Young pursued in college, earning a viticulture degree from Cal Poly. Although he grew up in San Diego, Young’s parents met at Cal Poly and the family maintained ties to the San Luis Obispo County area for 40 years. While still attending the university in San Luis Obispo, Young landed a job as assistant winemaker at Norman Vineyards, only a few miles down the twisting road from where he would later start his own winery. “That’s definitely where I developed a lot
8
of my love for Zinfandel,” said Young. Young said he initially envisioned himself growing grapes and then selling them, but he enjoyed the satisfaction of being completely responsible for the finished product. “I liked taking something to completion, rather than handing something off to a winery.” Young is intimately involved with all phases of the winemaking process, from nurturing the vines to bottling. “I like being as much hands-on as I can with every lot.” By learning his craft through years of working in all areas of a winery, Young knows the end result is what matters.
www.winecountrythisweek.com
“As long as you’re making solid wine and maintaining its integrity into the bottle, that’s the main thing.” Fate and some heady real estate investments helped Young become one of the region’s youngest winery owners, instead of heading off to graduate school. That was his plan, until Young was offered the post as winemaker at Norman. It was an opportunity Young couldn’t pass up. After a couple of years at Norman, the Beckett family put the old Peachy Canyon winery on the market. Young managed to buy the property, thanks in part to those investments, and produced his first commercial vintage in 2004. Minassian-Young opened its tasting room a year later and the winery is now producing about 3,000 cases annually. The expansive tasting room and its adjacent deck offer visitors stunning vistas of the vineyard and the Santa Lucia mountain range. It’s hard to imagine a better spot to enjoy a late fall afternoon sampling wine. The vineyard includes 10 acres of 27-yearold head-pruned Zinfandel vines with new plantings of Mourvedre, Syrah and Couniose
WINE COUNTRY THIS WEEK WINERY FEATURE grapes. The Zinfandel vines are dry-farmed (there’s no irrigation) in the limestone-rich soils of Paso Robles’ west side. “We farm our grapes with an emphasis on quality and sustainability,” said Young. The Zinfandel reflects the heritage of the west side, while the Rhône-style wines that are an integral part of MinassianYoung’s program showcases the varietals that are coming of age in the region. Young notes that his wines are made with either estate-grown fruit, or come from select vineyards in the region. About twothirds of the fruit used by Young comes from other growers, mostly on the west side of Paso Robles. Blends are made with grapes from a single vineyard, he said, to reflect the unique qualities of their particular soils and climate. “We really try to maintain the integrity of the vineyards.” Young said he makes different styles of wines, depending on the varietal. “I try to maintain a brightness in my Zinfandel.” Other releases includes Viognier and Marsanne-Rousanne blends. The winery also just released its first bottling of Tempranillo, said Young. Minassian-Young – which takes its name from the surnames of Young’s parents – opens its tasting room Friday through Monday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is located at 4045 Peachy Canyon Road. Details about its wine club and upcoming events are available at (805) 238-7571. A website, at www.minassianyoung.com, contains some information but remains under construction.

GALLERY 21 – Showcasing Famed Artist Eyvind Earle’s Rare and Prolific Art Pieces the Public has Never Viewed Before by Carole Ehrler
C
armel’s Gallery 21 will be one of the few locations to present Eyvind Earle’s watercolors, originals and drawings in a traveling world-wide art show in the spring. Many of the pieces were sold-out and will not be seen again publicly. Today, Gallery 21 displays over 100 of Earle’s vibrant color images that celebrate nature. Gallery 21 lends a new fresh ambience in the art gallery world with white painted walls, soft curved edges and arched doorways, which bring Earle’s colorful works to life. The gallery is light, airy and appointed with colorful acrylic furnishings by artist Haziza. This makes the rooms the perfect backdrop for Eyvind Earle’s creations. Director of Gallery 21 Ioan Szasz is very knowledgeable about Eyvind Earle’s amazing life story, from his birth in 1916 to his passing in 2000. Gallery 21 has been in Carmel since 1991 and relocated to its present location on Sixth Street in 2004. This is the same store that Earle visited and in which he wished to have his Gallery. Eyvind Earle’s first one-man-showing was in France at age fourteen. Earle created his work from his imagination and memory. He used every medium, including watercolors, etchings, lithographs, serigraphs, drawings and sculptures. A bio of his amazing life and a book of his 833 Christmas card designs, some dating back to 1938, can be viewed at Gallery 21. Earle’s simplicity, color, style and detail in his artwork are traits that make his pieces intriguing and inspiring to his collectors. His interest in the metaphysical, the writings of mystic teachers and his need to express his visual images to fulfill his being can be viewed in his art. Artists Audrey Lynne Cook and John Cody are also on display at Gallery 21. Cook is famous for her graceful and elegant horse and cat sculptures. As her mentor, Earle’s influence can be seen in Cook’s work. Cook also began at a very young age and had a father who was a jewelry and photograph artisan. Cook’s works include scripts in ceramic, resin, stone and wood. She also fabricates wearable sculpture with gold, silver and bronze. Artist John Cody became intrigued by stone carvings while working on an archaeologist’s Indian tribal ground excavation. Cody creates free flowing, organic sculpture that he personally quarries from the serpentine boulders of the San Rafael Mountains. Cody’s combination of his carving methods and choice of stone create an appearance that acquires a life of its own. Gallery 21 is located on Sixth Street, between Dolores and Lincoln in Carmel. Ioan Szasz is the Director. Call for dates of Eyvind Earle’s Traveling Show. Artists John Cody and Audrey Lynne Cook will both be featured in their own Gallery 21 shows. For information, phone (831) 625-1738 or visit the website at www.gallery21.com.

Celebrating its 33rd season, The Great American Melodrama and Vaudeville features this classic followed by the brand new comic operetta, Hansel and Gretel, and a delightful, heart warming Holiday Vaudeville Revue, playing from November 16 through December 31. Following A Christmas Carol at each performance is the brand new fractured fairy-tale musical, Hansel and Gretel, written by Marian Partee and Jordan Richardson. Hansel and Gretel are the couch-potato kids of Jenny and Craig, the owners of Fairy Tale Fitness. When the kids are caught eating junk food, they are sent off on a hike with Little Red Riding Hood, and their adventures in the woods lead them into trouble with B.B. Wolf and a witch with an unusual appetite. Loads of laughs await the audience in this hilarious satire, directed by Eric Hoit with musical direction and accompaniment by Jordan Richardson. Rounding out the evening is the Holiday Vaudeville Revue, directed by Jim Shine with choreography by Michael Jenkinson. Full of nostalgic songs to warm your heart and comic ones to make you laugh, this revue promises to send everyone out into the night with a
smile on their lips and a song in their hearts. You don’t want to miss audience favorites The Rappin’ Reindeer and the famous Melodrama Waterglass Orchestra! Fun and frivolity will be experienced by thousands of family and friends as they celebrate a traditional holiday season at The Great American Melodrama. The Melodrama offers great food, snacks, desserts, beer and wine at the in-house pub. Many shows are added to the regular schedule to accommodate the demand for this show. A performance calendar may be found at www.americanmelodrama.com. Tickets are selling fast, so reserve now! For information on showtimes and reservations, call the Melodrama Box Office at (805) 489-2499. The Great American Melodrama has been presenting professional family entertainment since 1975 at its location on Highway 1 in Oceano, three miles south of Pismo Beach.

Preferred Tasting Room:
PEACHY CANYON WINERY by Mark Storer
I
f you’ve driven over Highway 46 westbound, then you know Peachy Canyon. The signs point to it and the Schoolhouse vineyard that punctuates the rolling hills tells you to whom it belongs. This was and is Zinfandel country and Peachy Canyon winery made a name for itself with the bold flavors of Zin from its inception. The Peachy Canyon “schoolhouse” is just that actually, an old schoolhouse built in 1886 that housed the Bethel School. After its service in the name of education, it became a home and from there was transformed into Peachy Canyon’s tasting room home. The grounds are overseen by Princess, the 11year-old cat who was born on the property. She greets guests as they enter with a friendly purr or a rub on the leg as you head for the tasting bar. The pale yellow walls, recently painted, accent wood and tile flooring and the quaint interior belies a very busy and hard-working winery family and their employees. The Beckett family owns Peachy Canyon and Josh Beckett is at the helm as head winemaker. It is at the tasting bar where Peachy Canyon shines, of course. Known widely for
12
Zinfandel from several different vineyards, Beckett also produces Cabernet Franc, Viognier, Petite Sirah, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon among others. Josh Beckett’s hands-on style of winemaking gets everyone at the winery involved. He takes suggestions and hints from harvest workers in the vineyard, tasting room workers, just about everyone who comes into contact with the wines. It wasn’t always thus, however. Josh’s family was in the wine business, but he had www.winecountrythisweek.com
no desire to be. Running off first to San Diego to manage a surf shop, it wasn’t until after college and a hand in a few other careers that Josh came back to make wine. Having done so, Peachy Canyon now produces some 84,000 cases a year and has won countless medals as well. The open spaces that surround the schoolhouse are as inviting as the tasting room themselves. With room for guests to have picnic lunches in the shadow of a beautiful gazebo beneath the local native oak trees, the view is one of vineyards as far as the eye can see. The schoolhouse itself is a stroll backward in time and the quiet grounds can have you believe you are nowhere near a bustling winery. Indeed, the winery itself is off property, allowing Peachy Canyon to focus directly on their customers in this facility. Even so, Josh Beckett, or one of the Beckett family, are often at the tasting room giving tours or hosting guest tasting events. The Peachy Canyon tasting room is located at 1480 N. Bethel Road in Templeton. They’re open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. except major holidays. For more information, call 1-800-315-7908 or visit online at www.PeachyCanyon.com.

Thirty Days in Tuscany: Photos of the Val d’Orcia Carina Cellars welcomes Jules Reuter to the tasting room for his second show, and the first of the Winter Art Series at Carina Cellars. After 23 year as a Visual Effects Editor for NBC and Fox Network, Reuter was able to hone his visual skills and develop aesthetic sensibilities. Then in 2004, after retiring from network television, Reuter moved to Guadalupe on California’s beautiful Central Coast, where he currently resides as a landscape and travel photographer. Reuter finds himself particularly drawn to the landscapes of California, especially the Guadalupe-Nipomo dunes. Recently though, Reuter has begun to explore other areas of the world for their natural beauty, which led him to spend a month in Tuscany, Italy. The result of this trip is Reuter’s current exhibition in the Carina Cellars Tasting Room, a collection of photographs of the Val d’Orcia, which were captured using a Leica D-Lux II camera. Reuter’s philosophy as a photographer is that “your negatives should be as close as possible to what you print,” which is why he uses minimal darkroom or computer manipulation of his images. The vibrant colors and stark contrasts presented in this show allow the viewer to experience the beauty of Tuscany, as Reuter witnessed it himself. Carina Cellars Tasting Room is located at 2900 Grand Avenue in Los Olivos. For more information check out www.carinacellars.com or call the tasting room at (805) 688-2459.

Winemaker Profile, Carina Cellars:
JOEY TENSLEY Hands-on Education Leads to Hands-off Winemaking at Carina Cellars
by Mark Storer
C
arina Cellars is young as Central Coast wineries go. In 2002, owner David Hardee and winemaker Joey Tensley began Carina and set up shop in Los Olivos. The success has been notable and it comes from the right place: Great wine. Carina’s wines include many Rhône white varietals and the Viognier is among the most widely purchased from the Central Coast. Joey Tensley’s winemaking education is of the “hand-on” variety. But hands-on for Tensley means hands-off in the cellar. No oenology degrees, no university classes, Tensley started with Fess Parker in 1993. Working in the cellar and running the mobile bottling line gave him the education he needed to begin an appreciation and understanding of wine. Like so many winemakers, Tensley knew that the best way to learn how to make wine was to begin making it. In 1996, Brian Babcock of Babcock Winery and Vineyards hired Tensley as the assistant winemaker. “I learned from Brian hands off winemaking,” says Tensley. Babcock stressed the importance of the vineyard and his renowned reputation as a thorough, focused and passionate winemaker helped Tensley begin to learn to trust himself and his own opinions and decisions. Within two years, Tensley began to make his own wine under an eponymous label while also serving as assistant winemaker to Beckmen
16
www.winecountrythisweek.com
Winery and Vineyards. Tensley’s own label produced 100 cases of wine, not quite enough to open a business on, but enough to give him the experience he needed. “I like to let the vineyard speak for itself,” says Tensley. “I can’t make quality wine from mediocre grapes. It’s all about the resources.” Those resources include the great vineyards of Santa Barbara County and it is there that Carina Cellars made its home. Carina’s award-winning wines have been Tensley’s passion for five years now and along with long-time assistant, Lino Garcia, Tensley has made that passion grow and thrive. Letting the vineyard speak for itself has also allowed him to let his wines speak for themselves. Tensley’s old-world experimentation, like blending small amounts of Viognier with the dark and bold Syrah grapes, has not only won him lavish praise from sommeliers and wine critics, it’s provided wine consumers a taste of newworld wine using old-world techniques. From Carina’s smoky and delightful Syrahs to the crisp, clear Viognier, Tensley has crafted a niche of great wines at affordable prices in a stand-out fashion. Hands-on education for hands-off winemaking has made Carina Cellars a unique brand on the Central Coast and Joey Tensley may well have perfected a niche that has been known for so long in the old world and the new – great wine begins in the vineyard. Visit Carina cellars in Los Olivos at 2900-A Grand Avenue, open daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call (805) 688-2459 or check the website at www.carinacellars.com.

Rio Seco Vineyard & Winery – A Diamond in the Rough by Dave Wilcox
W
hen Tom and Carol Hinkle first glimpsed the site where they would eventually establish Rio Seco Vineyard and Winery, they both thought the same thing: It was a mess. They saw more than a dozen or so abandoned cars, remnants of a charred home, and chicken and pig pens. Then there were the bullet holes piercing the walls of an old barn where authorities had busted one of the area’s largest marijuana-growing rings. But as a professional baseball scout with more than 25 years experience, Tom Hinkle has developed his ability to witness potential that others might overlook. “He could look past the mess, to the site, and saw the promise and so many possibilities,” Carol Hinkle said of her husband. That promise has been kept. Despite a schedule that keeps him on the road much of the year, Hinkle and his wife, a retired schoolteacher, have developed Rio Seco into a respected winery that produces about 4,000 cases annually. Thirty of the ranch’s 64 acres are planted, with a little more than half growing Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel and Cabernet Franc. Hinkle said after much investigation, he also decided to plant Roussanne and Viognier as the winery’s white varietals. Rio Seco’s blend of Viognier and Orange Muscat is playfully named “Rio Vio.” The Hinkles, who live a few miles south of Paso Robles in Atascadero, knew they wanted to stay in San Luis Obispo County even after Tom left his job in 1980 as assistant coach for the Cal Poly baseball team to become a scout. Hinkle, an All-American catcher signed in 1963 by the Detroit Tigers, is responsible for recruiting future Hall of Fame shortstop Ozzie Smith to Cal Poly. Some sound investments enabled the couple to buy the 64-acre spread on Paso Robles’ east side overlooking a dry creek (hence, Rio Seco) in 1996. The site had been used to make a B-movie called “The Junkman,” which Hinkle said is why so many beat-up cars littered the grounds. They were bonded in 1998 and their initial vintages were made under the direction of a consulting winemaker. But in 2000, the Hinkles purchased winemaking equipment from Pesenti Winery when it was sold to Turley Cellars. The decision to buy the equipment, instead of paying a consulting winemaker, was empowering,
said Carol Hinkle. They were now in control of their wine from vineyard to bottle. Along with assistant winemaker Eric Bauer (who pitched for Hinkle at Cal Poly during the early 1970s), Hinkle began crafting single-varietal wines along with blends with baseball-themed labels – Clubhouse Red and the Rio Seco Vineyard Paso Robles MVP Reserve Red Table Wine. Hinkle scouts his grapes the same way he eyes ballplayers, looking for nuances that distinguish great fruit from good fruit. Like most good winemakers, Hinkle believes quality wines are “made” in the vineyards. Once harvest is complete and the grapes are crushed, he isn’t one to tinker. “Start with good fruit (and) keep it simple” is the philosophy that guides his winemaking, said Hinkle. “The hard part of this business is farming,” he said while walking through the vineyard on a recent postcard-perfect morning. “We really work to get quality fruit.” Rio Seco’s red wines spend up to 24 months in the barrel, then another eight months to a year in the bottle, before their release. Road trips provide Hinkle with plenty of time to mull ideas for the winery. “Tom’s an idea guy,” said Carol. For the baseball scout, it’s all about the fundamentals: Good food, good wine, good friends, all coming together in a beautiful spot. Tasting room hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday through Monday. You can find Rio Seco Vineyards and Winery at 4295 Union Road. Exit Highway 101 at Highway 46 East and travel about two miles to Union Road and turn right. Make an immediate left and the winery is about two miles down the road. Call (805) 237-8884 or visit www.riosecowine.com for more information.

WINE COUNTRY THIS WEEK SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY
PCPA TheaterFest Presents The Sound of Music The Marian Theatre will come alive with The Sound of Music this holiday season. Running through December 23, this classic and endearing musical is based on the book The Story of the Trapp Family Singers. It features an unforgettable Rodgers and Hammerstein score, including “My Favorite Things,” “Do-Re-Mi” and “Climb Every Mountain.” A spirited young postulant named Maria is sent to serve as a governess for Captain Von Trapp, a widower with seven children. Her unorthodox methods quickly win over the children but clash with the regimental conduct the Captain insists upon. Director Roger DeLaurier said, “What should be the happy ending after the fairytale romance – the lonely mountain girl gets her prince – is delayed by the invasion of Austria. The happy ending does come however, when they escape.” Marian Theater is located at 800 S. College Drive in Santa Maria. For tickets and more information, call (805) 922-8313 (Wed-

home to more than 20 varieties of grapes made famous in the Rhône Valley, Burgundy, Bordeaux, Piedmont and Tuscany. Some of their vines were planted from cuttings brought from Europe 25 years ago and these vineyards have contributed to some of California’s best wines. The Valley View Vineyard, along Hill Haven Road in the Santa Ynez Valley, slopes toward the Santa Ynez River and the lower south-facing slopes yield some of Santa Barbara County’s most exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc and Syrah. The hilltop vineyards produce outstanding Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Petit Verdot and Malbec. Italian-inspired Mandolina wines – “California wines true to their Italian heritage” –
their natural characteristics … to let them express themselves,” she says. The wines are produced at a state-of-the-art facility in Buellton, but L&L is in the process of obtaining permitting for a winery on its own property in the Los Alamos Valley. Currently, approximately 20,000 cases of estate-bottled wine are produced, with goals to double the output to 40,000 cases. L&L’s grapes come from more than 400 acres in the Santa Maria, Los Alamos and Santa Ynez Valleys of Santa Barbara County, each of which runs from the coastal mountains west to the Pacific Ocean, promoting a long growing season of warm days and cool nights. L&L’s Los Alamos Vineyards along Highway 101 in the Los Alamos Valley are
More importantly, Lucas is famous for bucking conventional wisdom and planting more vines per acre using innovative trellis systems – including his signature “Geneva Double Curtain” trellis to accommodate specific varieties – and introducing suckering, hedging, thinning and leaf removal systems. In 1996, Lucas joined forces with prominent Santa Barbara Superior Court Judge Royce Lewellen, whose retirement from the bench has brought him closer to his other passion, wine. Resident Winemaker Megan McGrath, who has assumed the day-to-day winemaking responsibilities from Consulting Winemaker Daniel Gehrs, combines Old World traditions with high tech savvy to get the most from the grapes. “My job is to allow grapes to showcase

pair innovation with affordability. Among them are Dolcetto, Malvesia Bianca, Nebbiolo, Nebbiolo-Barbara, Pinot Nero, Pinot Grigio, Rosato, Toccata, Toccata Classico and Toccata Riserva. Representing Mandolina’s versatility and innovation are its Toccata (a Super-Tuscan blend of Sangiovese and Bordeaux varietals) and its success with Nebbiolo, Barbera and Malvesia Bianca, grape varieties rarely produced in California. Under the Queen of Hearts label, offering exceptional quality at incredible values, the winery produces Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc. The 2003 Lucas & Lewellen Cabernet Sauvignon Côte del Sol, priced at $32, has won two Gold Medals and a Best in Class. An 8% component of Syrah from the same south-facing vineyard provides a spicy, slightly jammy note, while black cherry, currant and cassis flavors dominate the palate. Lucas & Lewellen does a fine job with Viognier, the classic Rhône Valley grape, grown on a small vineyard in Santa Ynez Valley. The 2005 L&L Viogner, offered at $19, exhibits subtle nuances of apricot, honey and grapefruit, balanced by a pleasant spiciness. Mandolina’s 2003 Toccata Riserva, priced at $32, is another winner of two Gold Medals. This Super-Tuscan-style wine blends Sangiovese with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, producing rich and spicy notes of oak, wild berries and black tea. Like the L&L Cabernet Sauvignon Côte del Sol, this wine can age
