BAILEYANA ON A TANGENT The Wines of the Niven Family by Michael Cervin

I

n 1909, local farm workers constructed the Independence Schoolhouse in what was empty farmland in San Luis Obispo’s Edna Valley. Today, Baileyana and Tangent wines can be sampled in the same schoolhouse, a bright and airy place with similar idyllic views of copious amounts of land as before. The tasting room, renovated in 1998, will celebrate its centennial next year. In fact, where the tasting bar is currently, used to be the school library. Now instead of books lining the wall, bottles of wine stand guard. In the early 1970s, the husband and wife team of Jack and Catherine Niven began planting grapes on not more than a hunch that it would be fertile land for grapes. The two vineyards, Paragon and Firepeak, lay partly on the valley floor while other parts begin the ascent on the hillsides of the Niven ranch. The Edna Valley, now understood to be similar to the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay areas of Burgundy, also enjoys a unique geographic feature. It’s one of the few valleys that run in an east west configuration (known as a transverse valley) rather than the usual

10

north-south valley, such as the San Joaquin Valley. John Niven is part of the third generation of his family’s farming operation and by all accounts, the younger generations will be involved as well. Though John and his cousin Michael are still subservient to the second generation, the family works together. Well, most of them. “Myself, my sisters and my cousins, we all got the ‘you’re not coming to work for us’ speech,” John said. “The family encouraged us to go live and experience life and business on someone else’s buck. Myself and my cousin came back to work for the family in the late 1990s,” he added. Being family run has its distinct advantages. “With consolidation in the wine industry there’s a pool of smaller wineries like us. There’s a gap between the big guys and the little guys and some consumers are gravitating toward smaller wineries that have family, stories and niches,” John says. And Baileyana proudly speaks of their 35year history in the Edna Valley. “We’re dedicated to San Luis Obispo and a legacy of farming that ensures that future generations can do it. We also have our commitment to sustainability in the vineyard.” And as any www.winecountrythisweek.com

good farmer knows, you have to treat the land with respect. The Baileyana label has a strong focus on the classic wines of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Syrah from their Firepeak Vineyard, which is a mere four and a half miles from the coast. The unique cool location and the oddities of the soil composition, including beach sand and seashells, create a very unique plot of land. The Tangent label seems to reflect its name: “Tangent is more a niche and purpose driven wine with all these cool, funky alternative white wines,” John mentioned. Indeed they have dedicated a lot of resources to produce Albarino, Viognier, Pinot Blanc and their flagship Tangent wine, Ecclestone, an unconventional blend of Pinot Blanc, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Muscat Canneli and Viognier. In keeping with the alternative whites only, they have planted the often mispronounced and rarely seen Austrian grape, Gruner Veltiner. “These are great expressions of those varietals in the Edna Valley which is a cool climate viticulture. So at the end of the day you get this purity of fruit, with acidity and what’s in the bottle is what Mother Natures gave us in the vineyard,” John says. It seems unlikely that the Edna Valley is at the

WINE COUNTRY THIS WEEK WINE COUNTRY NEWS cutting edge of unusual grape production, but Tangent is proof that a diverse array of grapes can be successfully grown here. “The Edna valley is such a small specialized appellation, that our problem is getting people to stop off the 101 in between Los Olivos and Paso Robles,” John believes. But once they do, they keep coming back. “People like to discover gems and they like to pass that on,” he said when folks encounter his wines. “It’s no different than the hole in the wall restaurant. People love to find something that no one else has found and share it with others. I do that. I find wines that my family has never had and spring it on them. That’s what boutique wineries can offer,” he said. But niche can have it’s own challenges. “It’s a doubled edged sword; the marketplace is so competitive and global. Even in San Luis Obispo, you go to a nice restaurant and they’re pouring a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, or Chianti from Italy, and you’re competing with that in your own back yard.” But at the end of the day, the generations of Nivens are still happy to be doing what they love to do. “We feel so fortunate to be involved with our grandfather and father and uncles, we realize we have something special and we’re very fortunate to be doing what we’re doing.” The full arsenal of Baileyana and Tangent can be sampled at 5828 Orcutt Road in the heart of Edna Valley. Tasting fees are $5 and allows a combined five tastes for both Baileyana and Tangent. For more information, call (805) 269-8200 or go to the website www.baileyana.com. www.winecountrythisweek.com

SYLVESTER VINEYARD & WINERY Wine, Cheese, Chocolate and More by Leah Kolt Think you’d enjoy some cinnamon and chilispiked chocolate with a lush Sangiovese Port? Or how about a reserve Merlot paired with Madagascar chocolate that melts into a harmonizing cherry finish? If you’re more in the mood for something savory, perhaps a crisp apple-nosed Chardonnay with some rubbed-sage Vermont cheddar? You can sample these and other adventurous pairings in Paso Robles at Sylvester Vineyard & Winery, which offers five-glass, Reserve-wine flights with cheese or chocolate for only $5 each. Take your palate and your plate outdoors and stroll through the vine-covered pergola to view the swans that grace a small lake. Train buffs might enjoy their samplings more from inside one of the classic railcars on display, including two vintage Pullman sleepers and a dining car. Veteran travelers who’ve enjoyed Sylvester wines with the gourmet fare on Princess Cruises will be glad to learn they can enjoy the same fine food and wine on land, when Sylvester celebrates harvest on October 18 with an Italian buffet extravaganza, featuring main dishes that range from lobster claws and prime rib to venison and homemade ravioli, as well as exciting compliments such as balsamic caramelized chestnuts and pumpkin gnocchi. An array of cheeses – presented by the Cheese Store of Beverly Hills – and Italian desserts complete the cruise-inspired menu. The cost is $70 per person plus tax, which includes wine and live music, or $60 for wine club members. You can register online at www.sylvesterwinery.com. If you can’t stay for dinner, enjoy wine and cheese pairings and special Greek “Saganaki” fondue on Saturday and Sunday, October 18-19, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Join winemaker Jac Jacobs and other winery staff for wine education sessions, barrel tasting and tours of the facility, where you can see first hand how the grapes are de-stemmed, crushed, fermented, and bottled. You’ll even be able to sample wine grapes and olives. Or come by any weekend at 1 p.m. for a tour. If you’re fortunate enough to catch Jac, he’ll enthrall

you with the story of how he went from being a nuclear submarine mechanic to an apprentice for some of California’s wine greats, like Mendocino County pioneer winemaker John Parducci and André Tchelistcheff, “the dean of American winemakers” who mentored Robert Mondavi and Louis Martini. Sylvester reds range from the Kiara Reserve Merlot – which sells for only $11.25 to wine club members but tastes more like a $20-25 wine – to the ’05 Nikiara Bordeaux blend ($32) which earned 87 points in Wine Enthusiast. The 2004 Cabernet Franc ($24.95) earned 91 points at the California State Fair. And, the chocolate-loving 2003 Sangiovese Port, which garnered 94 points in Wine Enthusiast, is only $24.99. Join the Flock, Sylvester’s wine club, and receive a hefty 25 percent discount on these great wines and others, as well as on merchandise in the wellstocked gift shop, located at 5115 Buena Vista Drive, off Highway 46 East in Paso Robles. Thanks to its partnership with Peacock Cheese, an international gourmet foods importer, Sylvester also offers a Cheese Society Membership, which includes two shipments per year in October and February. Each shipment includes two wines paired with a gourmet specialty cheese.

PRETTY-SMITH

VINEYARDS & WINERY Located at the Northern Gateway to Paso Robles Wine Country, Pretty-Smith Vineyards & Winery offers visitors a big dose of friendly hospitality. Owner/winemaker, Lisa Pretty, personally welcomes each guest with a warm smile and an offer to begin the tasting with a cool, crisp Sauvignon Blanc or the opportunity to jump right into the line-up of the estate grown, red Bordeaux varietals and blends. The tasting room can be found in the hilltop winery with wonderful views of both the golden hills of San Miguel and the estate vineyards. While the majority of the vineyards still host the original plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc, several acres have been replanted to include Malbec. Although the stand-alone varietals dominate the PrettySmith offering, it is the blends that really let Lisa express her wine style. Palette de Rouge (Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot) is emerging as one of the area’s most complex and exciting wines. Everything at Pretty-Smith receives Lisa’s personal attention. The female touch can definitely be detected in the wine – the style is soft, smooth and silky with a lovely velvet

14

texture. The white wines are fermented and aged in stainless steel tanks and released young to deliver that fresh fruit flavor. The reds, on the other hand, are aged in French and Hungarian oak barrels for up to three and a half years, then bottled aged for an additional year prior to release. This is an extraordinary boon to the wine drinker who does not want to wait two or three years for a wine to begin to show its promise. Throughout the vineyards and winery, the spirit of Kokopelli can be felt. Known as the www.winecountrythisweek.com

God of Fertility who played his flute to make the sun rise and crops abundant, Kokopelli has provided inspiration for Lisa as she nurtures the vines and hand-crafts the wines. His image is often found on the wine labels, with each release featuring a unique series of “Pretty-glyphs,” oil paintings created by Lisa in the winery’s art studio. The real magical and mystical element of the southwestern icon lives in the winery’s standard poodle, aptly named Kokopelli. Although he spends most of his time playing and greeting visitors, he earns his keep catching gophers, ground squirrels and chasing the birds away at harvest. So next time you are touring Paso Robles Wine Country be sure to stop in San Miguel, where one woman and a dog will be happy to greet you and let you discover a line-up of Bordeaux style wines made from estate grown fruit. Bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the wonderful views from the tables set outside the tasting room. The tasting room is open Friday through Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Private groups may book the event areas for parties outside of normal tasting room hours. For additional information, call (805) 4673104 or visit www.prettysmith.com.

WINE COUNTRY NEWS WINE COUNTRY THIS WEEK

ROBERT HALL WINERY – An Autumn Destination Set inland along California’s enchanting Central Coast, Robert L. Hall has built a world-class winery which has become a landmark for the Paso Robles community. Owner and winegrower Robert L. Hall began developing his idea for a premium producing vineyard and winery several decades ago after visiting the Rhône region of France, where he was captivated with the lifestyle of farming, crafting wine from the vine and the wine and food pairing experience. After years of entrepreneur endeavors, Robert ventured west with the goal of exploring California’s wine appellations to learn more about the optimum growing conditions for the production of premium wine grapes, specifically the Rhone varieties he had enjoyed so much. In the early-’90s, Robert and Margaret discovered the perfect terroir in the Paso Robles AVA. Featuring soil rich in nutrients, coupled with warm days and cool nights, Robert felt the viticultural conditions were ideal to the development of the enological characteristics he was seeking to produce. “Home Ranch” was acquired in 1995. Soon after, the “Terrace” and “Bench” vineyards joined the Hall Ranch. Throughout the years Robert has practiced the utmost care in the farming of the vineyards – believing in being a true steward of the land. Robert Hall Winery and Vineyards honor old world traditions combined with new world technology in practicing environmental sustainability to conserve our earth’s natural resources. The winery is an active participant in the Certified Sustainable Program and has implemented conservation and resource management practices winery-wide, including the recycling and treatment of waste water for vineyard and landscape irrigation, use of a natural pumice, diatomaceous earth and organic compost tea in the vineyard. Cover crops, along with beneficial insects and permaculture gardens are found on the ranch in addition to the preservation of the native oak trees. The winemaking team at Robert Hall Winery includes Winemaker Don Brady, Assistant Winemaker Claudia Dunlap, Cellarmaster Juan Contreras, and Steve Lane in the lab. The winemaking team believes great wine begins in the vineyard, with Don out in the vineyards monitoring the fruit’s progress. Don says his “goal is to capture the essence of the vineyard as well as enhance the quality of wine by getting the best product possible out of each vine.” Don has crafted many notable wines for Robert Hall Winery including the Viognier and Chardonnay which recently received 90scores in Wine & Spirits magazine. The winery is known for its Cabernet Sauvignon, in addition to its proprietary blends – the lively Blanc de Robles white-Rhone blend (Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, and Piquepol Blanc) the Rhone de Robles (Grenache, Syrah, Cinsaut and Counoise) and a Meritage

18

featuring fruit exclusively from the Hall Ranch. A new Chateauneuf-style blend, the Pape de Robles (Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvedre with a twist of Petite Sirah) was released early this summer, with a single varietal Petite Sirah and Cabernet Franc available this fall in the tasting room. The Robert Hall Winery tasting room has a tremendous selection of over fifteen award-winning wines available for tasting. Open daily, the Hospitality Center is a destination for wine enthusiasts. Guided Educational Tours are available and include a tour of the state-of-the-art winemaking facility and 19,000 square feet of underground wine caverns – the largest on the Central Coast. Enjoy a barrel tasting as you learn about the winemaking process from the vine to the glass. The winery also hosts special events throughout the year including food and wine seminars, outdoor concerts, weddings and private celebrations. Today, Robert and Margaret have established very solid roots in the ever-growing wine community of Paso Robles. Robert Hall Winery is the result of an old-fashioned work ethic combined with traditional winemaking techniques, state-of-the-art equipment and a team of dedicated professionals. On September 20th the winery will feature an all-day celebration for Central Coast residents in recognition of California Wine Month with complimentary wine tasting, local food sampling and live music.

Preferred Tasting Room:

PEACHY CANYON by Mark Storer

P

eachy Canyon has always been known for its Zinfandel. Sitting close to the east end of Highway 46 West, the Peachy Canyon “schoolhouse” is just that actually, an old schoolhouse built in 1886 that housed the Bethel School. After its service in the name of education, it became a home and from there was transformed into Peachy Canyon’s tasting room home. Far from looking like a school now, the tile and wood floors checked by soft yellow pastel walls are home to one of the busiest and most storied families in Paso Robles winemaking. The Beckett family has been at Peachy Canyon’s helm since its inception. Son Josh, however, took a different course before he came back home to make wine at his family’s winery. Running off first to San Diego to manage a surf shop, it wasn’t until after college and a desire to become a teacher that Josh came back to Peachy Canyon. The tasting room is where patrons really

20

get to see what the Beckett’s are up to. Widely known for their Zinfandel, Peachy Canyon produces Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petite Sirah, Syrah and other varietals and blends as well. For a time, however, Josh felt that the winery was producing wines that weren’t living up to their name. “We hit a growth spurt and the

www.winecountrythisweek.com

wines got too clean and too boring so we’ve taken it back and gotten back to our roots,” says Beckett. Part of that process was making sure he got input from everyone at the winery. Beckett takes suggestions by everyone from the tasting room crew to the vineyard workers and together, they produce award winning wines that occupy a singular place in the Paso Robles AVA. The schoolhouse’s grounds are quiet and beautiful rolling hills dotted by the majestic Oaks that give Paso Robles its name. Picnic grounds and a gazebo punctuate the acres and acres of vineyards and patrons can sit and sip gold medal wines, enjoy a bite to eat and stroll the ground escorted by Peaches and Herbie, the new tasting room cats. Schoolhouse vineyard is directly to the east of the tasting room and the cool afternoon breezes that roll up the canyon create the perfect winery atmosphere. The Peachy Canyon tasting room is located at 1480 N. Bethel Road in Templeton. They’re open 7 days a week from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. except major holidays.

Carina Cellars Presents ‘Three People, Seven Places’ Carina Cellars is proud to represent Santa Barbara artist Katie Desrochers in the tasting room for the first show in their Fall Art Series. A recent graduate from UC Santa Barbara with degrees in both English and Philosophy, Desrochers is a completely self-taught artist and a self-proclaimed painter since childhood. Attributing much of the influences on her current work to her studies at UCSB, Desrochers enjoys focusing on painting portraits of people and places. “I try to reconcile the surreality of memory and hindsight with the reality of faces and representation,” said Desrochers. Upon returning from three months spent in Europe, Desrochers had also amassed a wealth of photographs and memories which have inspired several pieces for this show. One rather dark and ethereal piece depicts a night spent in Prague, Czech Republic, while a series of three portraits captures herself and her two best friends at various stages of their journey.

There are seven main paintings that will be on display, each depicting the three friends in other cities such as London, Florence, Venice, Paris, Mainz and Zurich. Carina Cellars Tasting Room is located at 2900 Grand Avenue in Los Olivos. For more information, visit www.carinacellars.com or call the tasting room at (805) 688-2459. “London” by Katie Desrochers

Jazz Finale on September 21st for the 2008 Arroyo Grande Village Summer Concert Series The Arroyo Grande Village Summer Concert Series will conclude its 2008 Season with two great regional jazz groups on Sunday afternoon, September 21st. The entertainment for this 1 p.m. show has been arranged by the San Luis Obispo County Jazz Federation and will feature The Pat Cormick Group and SLO Mambo. This free Series is presented by the Arroyo Grande Village Improvement Association and the Arroyo Grande Parks, Recreation & Facilities Department. Rabobank joins these organizations as the Featured Series Sponsor. The Pat Cormick Group will open the show. Since it’s formation about six years ago, The Pat Cormick Group has performed at numerous venues in San Luis Obispo and Northern Santa Barbara counties and has found a niche among the many wineries of those areas. The group’s goal is to maintain, support and perpetuate good jazz via tunes, players and performers that keep an audience connected to the music of the Great Standards and Ballads. Closing the show will be the popular SLO Mambo, a sevenpiece Latin Jazz ensemble consisting of three horns, piano, bass and two percussionists. They feature music performed by such legends as Tito Puente and Pancho Sanchez as well as other prominent Latin jazz and salsa groups. The Band has a focus on Latin Jazz and salsa with an emphasis on the Afro-Cuban rhythms. The musicians in SLO

Mambo seek out the classic as well as the newer cutting edge Latin jazz being performed by New York, Los Angeles and Bay area groups. This concert is free to the public and starts at 1 p.m. Doc Burnstein’s Ice Cream Lab will be providing ice cream at this show and will donate a portion of their proceeds to the featured

nonprofit organizations. The South County Historical Society will be selling hot dogs, popcorn, lemonade and colas at all events. Attendees can make a day of it and visit the Village shops, antique stores and restaurants by crossing the historic Swinging Bridge into the Village. Music fans are also encouraged to visit the neighboring Museums in Heritage Square. Patrons are encouraged to bring picnic baskets, lawn chairs and blankets to the shows. or most people, baseball is nothing like wine. But for Tom Hinkle, the two are interrelated. Tom was a former Major League Baseball scout, visiting high school, college and semipro games, searching for the best young talent out there. “But I never really had time to taste wine,” Tom said. He was busy scouting, though occasionally he’d stop by wineries in Napa just to look around. He planted vineyards on his property in Paso Robles in 1997 and began the wine game while still scouting across the U.S. Having since retired from 28 years of scouting, Tom and his wife Carol now spend their time farming, making and selling wine and running the tasting room. The tasting room is a red barn with a trellised patio covered with grapes that provide shade. The views from this covered porch are vintage Paso Robles; gentle rolling hills, punctuated with mature oak trees, brown grass and glimpses of nearby vineyards. Tom sprayed the interior walls with a protective coating to help keep it cool inside and set up a functional, if modest, tasting area. The wood bar is all hand made, worn and full of character. In addition to the wines, Tom produces olive oil from trees on his 63-acre property. He just likes the challenge of something new. Rio Seco is a hands-on winery with Tom and Carol doing just about everything themselves. That includes Tom learning the art of winemaking. “Do I have formal training? No,” Tom grins. “Hours on the crush pad? Yes!” Tom’s a believer that you learn by doing, something he picked up at college at Cal Poly Pomona. “Making wine isn’t rocket science,” Tom says. Plus there’s the advantage of having a supportive winemaking community near him. And perhaps the toughest part of making wine? “You ruin a lot of clothes,” he says. The wines run the gamut from a light Roussanne to a hefty white blend called VIO RIO, a blend of Orange Muscat and Viognier, which the Hinkles affectionately call “mama’s moonshine” because of its 16.6 percent alcohol. Rio Seco is especially known for its Cabernet Franc as well as Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and their award-winning Zinfandels. Their reds are all mild tannin wines, meant to be consumed soon. Four times a year they offer a Texas Hold ’em tournament where the grand prize is a free one-year wine club membership. The tasting fee is $5 and is applied towards any wine purchase. No wines are off limits, so if it’s open, the Hinkles will pour it. Rio Seco Vineyard is located at 4295 Union Road in Paso Robles and they are open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Stop on by and see the dogs, Blaze and Rio, and Curious George, the cat. You’re sure to hot a home run if you do. For more information, visit the website at www.riosecowine.com or call (805) 237-8884.

Harvest Winemaker Dinner with Kenneth Volk Come celebrate harvest with fine wines from Kenneth Volk Vineyards at the Santa Ynez Inn on October 11 from 6 to 9 p.m. Enjoy a five-course gourmet dinner prepared by Chef Heather Henry and meet the winemaker while tasting some of the best wines in Santa Barbara County. To make your reservation, call (805) 688-5588 or email [email protected]. You may also place reservations in person at the Santa Ynez Inn. Tickets are $125 all inclusive. Seating is limited. Ken Volk’s wines are a passion. They are certainly that for him, and they tend to be for his regular customers, too. He puts a great deal of passion into making them and the result is unique, fruit-forward wines with extraordinary flavors that really show off their varietal and the vineyard in which they were grown. Volk’s far-reaching influence has earned the accolades constantly paid to him by several generations of winemakers now working on the Central Coast. As a winemaker, Volk’s passion has always been the vineyard itself and his background in fruit science and the desire to grow better, more tasteful, less synthesized fruit is what has driven him. It’s probably the thing that led him here for this area has some of the great vineyards from which he has always purchased grapes.

Known all over California as a founder of Central Coast wines, it was his Wild Horse Winery and Vineyards in Paso Robles that produced not only a long-lasting reputation for him, but also a veritable training ground for Central Coast winemakers. Kenneth Volk Vineyards, then, is a realization and the ultimate fruition for a man who is as passionate about fruit as he is about the wine he makes from it. Kenneth Volk Vineyards Tasting Room is located at 5230 Tepusquet Road in Santa Maria, open daily from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For more information, call (805) 938-7896 or go to www.volkwines.com.

Santa Ynez Inn The Santa Ynez Inn has recently unveiled six new luxury accommodations for a total of 20 rooms and suites. The Four Diamond Victorian-style inn boasts several interior and exterior meeting sites for Wine Country weddings and events. The public is welcome to tour the facilities with or without attending this fund raiser. The Santa Ynez Inn is located at 3627 Sagunto Street in downtown Santa Ynez. For more information, call the inn at (805) 688-5588 or send an email to [email protected]

Breed: I adopted Talley Vineyards as my home about 2-1/2 years ago. When I first showed up I went by Scruffy but I cleaned up (and filled out) so nicely that I now go by Rico Suave. I might be a Russian Blue breed, but that’s my secret … I’m a kitty of mystery. Favorite Past times: Bringing gifts for tasting room staff (parts & pieces mostly), sneaking into the tasting room, chasing small dogs, hiding from big dogs, long naps on the front porch

RICO SUAVE

Quotes: “Time for Breakfast”, “Time for Cheese”, “Work with me, people!” Favorite Things: Cuddly soft sweatshirt display, belly rubs, patrolling the winery grounds and vegetable fields, showing off for visitors, being the official greeter at the tasting room

3031 Lopez Dr, Arroyo Grande 805-489-0446 www.talleyvineyards.com Hours: 10:30am – 4:30pm daily

If you see me… I expect you to share your picnic lunch (never mind that I have 4 teeth), don’t be afraid to pet me, I’ll always be ready for my close-up.
