J. LOHR

VINEYARDS & WINES by Mark Storer

S

elling wine in America is as much marketing as it is anything else. The competition is strong and there are a lot of great wines from a lot of places. But staying power, the ability to market your wine and continue selling bottle after bottle takes something special indeed. J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines knows something about making and selling wines as they’ve been doing it for more than three decades. Jerry Lohr first started planting vineyards and making wine in Monterey County in 1972 and then in the Paso Robles region in 1988. In Paso, J. Lohr now grows 2,000 acres of red wine grapes, making only red wines in the area that UC Davis called “the next great red wine region.” That was in the 1970s. Now, the Lohr family is all involved in the family business and Steve Lohr, Jerry’s son, is vice president of planning and development. Overseeing all of the vineyards and holdings for J. Lohr from St. Helena in the Napa Valley to Monterey County to Paso Robles, Steve’s work keeps him constantly traveling and constantly busy.

“I got involved right from the start, really,” says Lohr. “I planted the first vineyards in Monterey County when I was 10 years old and so I’ve been around it a long while.” Detouring to Stanford and earning degrees in civil engineering and economics with careers in construction and engineering along the way, Steve has now come back to the fold, along with sister Cynthia and brother Lawrence, all of whom play roles in the J. Lohr family business. A boutique wine feel is what drives the engine of J. Lohr. The size of the company, however, allows them to have state-of-the-art analytical facilities and labs and the result is a marriage of old-world craftsmanship and new-world techniques unique among winemakers. Lohr wanted top talent to help manage the extraordinary winemaking business of red wines in Paso Robles. He found the right person in Steve Peck, formerly of BrownForman’s Five Rivers Winery. Peck’s strong science and chemistry background from UC Davis was a major factor in his coming to J. Lohr. “We wanted someone with a strong analytical background, but who also got the

www.winecountrythisweek.com

feel of wine,” says Lohr. “It’s not often you find someone with the combination of science and feel like Steve has. We got the right man.” Steve Peck – whose credentials are long and honorable – works alongside Jeff Meier, senior vice president of winemaking. Together, they complete the company’s focus on Paso Robles red wine. The Paso Robles facility is responsible for some truly extraordinary wines. Among them is the J. Lohr Cuvée Series, wines that are inspired by the blends of the Grand Cru Chateau regions of France including Pauillac, Pomerol and St. Emillion. “We’ll age those in French oak anywhere from 24-30 months and the result is a wine we think rivals the best of the Grand Cru,” says Lohr. “We also make our J. Lohr Estates Seven Oaks Cabernet here and that is the number one selling Cab in the United States – over $12 a bottle.” “The diversity of climate and soils in Paso and the quality and breadth of the wines here are really what drew us,” says Lohr. He should know, as one of the many hats he wears is a board chair of Paso Robles Wine Country Alliance. “We’re here to get the word out and we’ll tour four to six cities in the U.S. a year

WINE COUNTRY THIS WEEK WINERY FEATURE with our grand tastings and trade media events.” Steve was elected to the position of board chair and that honor has conferred upon him a unique role. As a sort of ambassador for not only J. Lohr, but also Paso Robles wines in general, Steve is living proof that J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines fits right in with the family feeling of Paso Robles wine growers. The J. Lohr vineyards in Paso Robles grow Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot, Zinfandel, Malbec, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. “We do a lot of blending and we like to stay as traditional as possible,” says Lohr. “The grapes we’re growing here are as good as or better than anywhere else in the world.” Lohr should know. With vineyards that span the great growing regions of California, he’s had a chance to sample them all and Paso Robles consistently ranks at the top. The focus on only red wine in Paso Robles has allowed J. Lohr to become something of an expert in the region. J. Lohr wines that are grown here are an extension of a winemaking tradition that goes back well before those first vineyards in Monterey County to a time when wine was a family tradition, a family occupation. Almost every winemaker says that at some point or another, wine is made in the vineyard. Great grapes equal great wine. Steve Lohr’s commitment to spending some time every week in the vineyards is more proof of his family’s dedication to making those wines. Visit the J. Lohr Paso Robles Wine Center at 6169 Airport Road, off of Highway 46 East, daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call (805) 239-8900 or visit jlohr.com.

Blend Your Passion for Wine and Art at Artiste by Mark Storer

ew World and Old World wine classifications have always been a little bit at odds with one another. In France, for example, one doesn’t buy a bottle of Pinot Noir, one buys a bottle of Burgundy. European winemakers have always put an emphasis on terroir, soil and land, not on grape variety. New World winemakers have made the grape varietal king and so buying wines from either Old or New World purveyors has become more of an education than an exercise in choice. Enter Bion Rice, whose family winemaking foundations include Sunstone Winery in Santa Ynez, and who decided that while he learned winemaking in the New World, it was the Old World idea of blending and cuvee winemaking that intrigued him. “The longer I spent in the winery learning the craft and science of winemaking, the more interested I became in the art of blending wine. I found that blending really appealed to my senses and was more creative.” Turning from his roots at Sunstone to the Old World art of blending wines, Rice began Artiste Winery and Studio in downtown Santa Ynez. Artiste is not just another winery, though – as is evinced by Rice’s dedication to cuvee blending rather than a focus on varietals. “Artiste allows me to focus solely on quality, without being ultimately concerned with designating single-vineyards and political appellations, or staying vintage and varietal on the label,” he says. Still, that wasn’t the entire basis for his focus. Working together with artists, Rice developed, not only a unique winemaking facility, but an artist’s studio as well. Rice built a winery dedicated to using the highest quality grapes to produce truly singular wines from vineyards all over the state. He is, in essence, using California as his pallet to create exotic tastes for your palate. It’s a synergy borne of the artistry of winemaking and thus, Artiste’s name. The winery’s showcase of local and world-

renowned artists at the facility showing their work is the lynchpin in this unique wine studio. This month, Artiste will host the paintings of Craig Nelson an artist known for his rich, lush oil paintings, Nelson is a favorite of many collectors including James Garner, Neil Simon, The Toyota Corporation and many others. His work will be displayed at Artiste for all to see. But it doesn’t stop with seeing other artist’s work at Artiste. In the Santa Ynez tasting studio, prepare to explore your own artistic side as a public canvas is on display for each customer to paint, draw or express their own creativity while tasting premium California cuvees. “That’s why we chose a salon setting for our Tasting Studio, where visitors may express themselves and share their opinions with others,” says Rice. “In museums and www.winecountrythisweek.com

galleries, visitors are expected to keep quiet and to themselves.” At Artiste, however, customers are encouraged to express not only their own creativity, but their opinions and thoughts about the wines they’re drinking. “I hope Artiste opens people’s minds about blends and helps them to trust and share their own impressions,” Rice adds. At Artiste, the subjective is celebrated, talked about and shared. The studio itself is a sort of monument to the 1870s impressionist art movement in France. The studio is designed to look like the Hotely Baudy in Giverny, France where the impressionist movement is thought to have begun. Each release from Artiste includes a release from one of its many artists on the label and is accompanied by a food pairing and art show featuring those very paintings and a discussion with the artist as well as autographed bottles. The synergy of art and wine comes full circle when the inspiration within the bottle becomes the same inspiration outside the bottle, on its label. Rice’s unique blends, themselves an homage to Old World wine blending traditions have given birth to beautifully crafted wines such as Toretta. With a base of the Italian varietal, Nebbiolo, Rice blends in Merlot, Cabernet Franc and a small bit of Barbera. The Bordeaux combine with the Cal-Itals and the result is now an Artiste library wine. Artiste goes where few other wineries have chosen to go, directly into the art of winemaking. But rather than make that art inaccessible and out of touch, Bion Rice, and the rest of the Artiste crew, have brought the artists and the winemakers right out in front for all to see. Customers can even sit in on Rice’s blending sessions and talk about the choices he makes while he makes them. In short, Artiste brings its art – and its wine – to the people. Artiste is located at 3569 Sagunto Street in Santa Ynez. They are open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

Looking for a unique holiday gift for your wine-loving friends? How about an ornament signed by their favorite winemaker(s)? Do your shopping early at the holiday gathering of the Far Out Wineries in Paso Robles, on Friday, November 30. Or if you’re shopping is under control, just share a glass of cheer with the winemakers and owners of the Far Out Wineries, including: Adelaida Cellars, whose red and white Rhône wines, as well as their Syrah, have scored in the 90s in Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate. Halter Ranch, which will showcase some of the 19 sustainablyfarmed Rhône and Bordeaux varieties and blends they produce. Minassian-Young, known for their organically grown Zinfandels and Syrah, as well as Rhône and Bordeaux blends produced in select, hand-crafted lots. And Opolo Vineyards, which boasts a range of estate-grown reds from its explosive, big mountain Zinfandel to an easy-going Sangiovese. This first-ever Far Out Wineries yuletide celebration will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. at Adelaida Cellars on 5805 Adelaida Road west of Paso Robles. “No seminars, just plenty of good wine, food and fun. We’ve planned a very festive event to help our customers get into the holiday spirit,” said owner Monica Villicana of Villicana Winery. “We all have loyal customers who drive out this time of the year to stock up on our wines for the holiday season. So we decided this would be a great way to thank them and spend a little time with them.” And this group of 16 boutique wineries from the western area of the Paso Robles region knows how to throw a party. “The Far Out Wineries do a good job with their special events,” says Stacie Jacobs, the executive director of the Paso Robles Wine Country Alliance. Wine judge Mike Stepanovich, executive director of the Bakersfield Wine Society, agrees. “I’m always up for a visit to the Far Out Wineries. They’re not really that far away, literally speaking, but ‘far out’ is a good description of their fun attitude.” The wineries will be serving a full spectrum of cheer – offering two to three great wines each, along with tasty appetizers and sparkling conversation about your favorite topic – wine. An added bonus for attendees will be a card that provides a special 10% discount on wine purchases and complimentary wine tasting at any and all of the Far Out Wineries during the entire month of December 2007. Admission to the holiday event is $18. For reservations, contact Judy at Norman Vineyards (805) 237-0138. Or for more information, go to www.faroutwineries.com. As they say, the Far Out Wineries are off the beaten path and worth the drive.

15º C Wine Shop & Bar Offers a World of Taste by Leah Kolt

W

hen the 15º C Wine Shop & Bar openened last week, it brought a world of taste to San Luis Obispo County. In addition to California wine labels, owners Ali Carscaden and Allison Dominguez offer international wines, artisan beers, imported sake and a mouth-watering array of gourmet foods. Their shelves are bursting with a cornucopia of imported cheeses, domestic and imported oils and vinegars, and even special salts, honeys and cured meats. Sensing a market gap in the northern half of SLO County, the young entrepreneurs decided to open their adventurous boutique in tiny Templeton, a few miles south of Paso Robles and just off Highway 101 at the intersection of Vineyard Drive. The name of the shop refers to the ideal temperature for wine cellars, according to Ali, a former Henry Wine Group sales rep and certified sommelier who holds a master’s degree in agriculture from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. “People in the U.S. are more familiar with the Fahrenheit equivalent, of course (58º), but we felt the Celsius form better reflects our international theme,” she explained. The shop is optimally arranged with the non-alcoholic items up front, affording patrons the convenience of leaving the bar to browse while sipping their wine, beer or sake. The juxtaposition of food and wine brings other advantages, enabling customers to indulge in cheese and meat platters – or even desserts – while searching for the perfect wine and food pairings. Of course, Ali and Allison will also be glad to provide suggestions and assistance. In fact, Allison has worked at some of the top restaurants in the Western states. Educational seminars, special ordering, chilled beverages and snack-packs available for take-out, and “gift bundles” – their twist on the traditional food and wine basket – are other distinctive features of the shop. Their broad selection of beverages includes many that are hard to find in the county now – such as French Burgundy, sparkling sake and European brews. Coupled with a high-tech, wine-preserving system, it creates a truly unique tasting experiences for customers, who can compare the local, state and international wines or sample a flight of dessert wines with chocolates. “We’ll even be able to offer hundreddollar-a-bottle wines by the glass,” Ali said. Since the women share a strong environmental ethic, they have been working hard to make their business “as green as possible.” Allison even holds a master’s degree in environmental science. “The foot-thick concrete walls of our building help keep the shop at the ideal temperature for wine storage, so we won’t need to use much energy for that purpose,” she explained. “We also plan to offer organically produced wines and other ‘green’ food and beverages.”

Ali Carscaden and Allison Dominguez

Of course, there will be a wine club. Three of them, in fact, each with the option of choosing all red, all white or a combination. Club benefits will include 10 percent off all wine, 10 percent off any wine club reorders, 10 percent off classes and events and free tasting on featured wines. Wine Rack members will receive two bottles each month, not to exceed $25. Subscribers to The Cellar receive six bottles each quarter, with a $150 cap. “This is the club for those who like to drink wine as well as do a little collecting on the side,” Allison explained. The Cav is for the wine connoisseur who wants “only the most exceptional selections that will wow anyone.” This level offers 12 bottles every three months, with a maximum cost of $500. The dynamic duo even offer cellar consulting, for customers who want to build or upgrade their existing facility. And they will provide in-home wine events. “You pick the theme and the beverages, and we’ll do the rest,” Ali said. The combined expertise of the owners, along with their uniquely diverse food and beverage selections, array of services and ideal location, is what they hope will distinguish their business. “I always wanted to have my own business,” said Allison, who worked alongside a master sommelier in Vail, Colorado. “But restaurants have such long hours. The wine shop is perfect.” Ali had a similar yearning. In fact, she wrote the business plan for the shop while studying at Cal Poly, where the two friends met. “It’s just all fallen into place,” Ali said. “This is an exciting time to be doing this. People are coming from around the world to taste and even make wine here!” 15º C is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and on Friday-Saturday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. For more information go to www.15degreescwines.com.

GRILLED RACK OF LAMB AND VEGETABLES Submitted by Steve and Steffanie Anglim We’re big believers in the notion that great food doesn’t have to be complicated. We tend toward family-friendly, easy-to-prepare foods with great flavors, and Steve loves the grill, so it’s a natural choice for us. Steve prepared this rack of lamb for our recent Harvest Festival Barbeque and received rave reviews (Sofia, our 3-year-old daughter, ate three chops all by herself!) Add an assortment of vegetables to round out the meal. Rack of Lamb

Trim fat from the rack of lamb to expose 1 to 1-1/2 inches of bones and about 1/8-inch of fat on meat. Alternatively, ask your butcher to dress rack and trim excess fat from the ribs.

Grilled Rack of Lamb Perfectly Paired with Anglim Zinfandel Just the mention of lamb to anyone who dabbles in wine and food pairing would automatically elicit a response of the traditional match: Bordeaux wine – or, when speaking of domestic wine, a Meritage wine. These are wines that blend Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and other traditional Bordeaux grapes into a classic and elegant wine. But Paso Robles’ Anglim Winery kicked the intrigue up a notch, without sacrificing elegance, with their 2005 Zinfandel from St. Peter of Alcantara Vineyard. Its richness, bright fruit and notes of cinnamon spice all bring out the earthy spiciness of the lamb. Their simple, family-friendly grilled rack of lamb recipe with grilled winter vegetables is the perfect dish for anyone who loves “comfort food” on a cold night. If a lighter wine is your preference, try their Anglim 2006 Rosé; this dry blend of Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Viognier has good body and a spicy character that complements the meat. Anglim Winery is a small, family-owned label producing vineyard-designate varietals and blends. Case production is 3,000 to 4,000 cases a year using 100 percent French oak. The tasting room is located at 740 Pine Street in downtown Paso Robles, next to the Amtrak station. Tasting Hours are Thursday through Monday, 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.; Sunday from noon to 5:30 p.m. For more information, call (805) 227-6813 or visit the website at www.anglimwinery.com.

14

At least 3 hours before cooking (or up to the night prior), pat the meat with olive oil, season with salt and pepper, and rub in about one-half ounce of Mediterranean herbs per rack. Cover and refrigerate. The herb blend we use includes rosemary, sage, lemon, dill weed, fennel, garlic and marjoram. Google it...or try The Spice House in Chicago. Remove from refrigerator and allow meat to come to room temperature (about 1 hour). Pre-heat grill, preferably with mesquite charcoal, until very hot. Grill meat 3-5 minutes per side undisturbed, fat side first. Use tongs to turn. Cook to 5 degrees below desired “doneness” based on internal temperature (trust your thermometer). Remove from grill and allow to stand 10 minutes before cutting. Grilled Vegetables The assortment is really a preference issue – Steve loves asparagus, Steffanie loves pumpkin and Sofia loves fingerling potatoes – so you see how we choose. In all cases, we like to pre-cook the vegetables somewhat (even up to a day before), and then finish on the grill; the key is to not over cook or they’ll end up soggy. Asparagus: steam in white wine (our Anglim 2005 Roussanne works nicely) for 2 minutes; trim discolored ends, then grill to warm Pumpkin / Winter Squash: lightly season with salt and pepper (and a little cinnamon if you like), and roast in 350 degree oven for 20 minutes or so. Slice into wedges and finish on grill. Fingerling Potatoes: brush with olive oil and season with salt, pepper and rosemary; roast in 350 degree oven for 20 minutes – finish on grill. To serve: Slice chops and arrange meat and vegetables on a large platter. Serve family style – fingers are the tool of choice at our house – and enjoy!

A Better Life at Peachy Canyon

When Doug and Nancy Beckett, a couple of school teachers looking for a better life, moved their family to Paso Robles in 1982, they never envisioned the life they would lead today. The Beckett’s brand has become nationally distributed in 48 states and select international destinations. Their wines have been recognized in many publications over the years. The November 2007 issue of Bon Appetit recommended the 2005 Westside & Snow Vineyard Zinfandels as the perfect wine for holiday menus. This coming year production is set for 84,000 cases, their largest production yet. In order to secure premium fruit, Peachy Canyon sources grapes from more than twenty local growers in the Paso Robles AVA and 100 acres of their estate vineyards. The winery is still headed by founding vintners Doug and Nancy. Now, after years away from home, both sons, Josh and Jake returned to Paso Robles

Winemaker Josh Beckett

and Peachy Canyon to work for the family business. Josh has been with the winery for ten years and has been the winemaker since 2003. Combining his varied experiences with different winemakers and regions, Josh keeps an open mind in order to create the most exciting wines possible. Jake, the younger son, wasn’t able to resist the lure of the family business either. For years, Jake worked as the vineyard manager over-seeing the four Peachy Canyon Vineyards and working with local growers to ensure fruit quality. In 2005, Jake wanted to learn other aspects of the business and joined the sales team. Jake now is the General Sales Manager and travels the country promoting the family brand. Although Zinfandels dominate the Peachy Canyon tasting menu, you will find Cabernets, Merlots, and special blends that are available to sample. Each wine possesses unique characteristics with distinguished qualities. There are two tasting rooms open to the public to sample current releases.

The Old School House Tasting Room is located on the corner of Bethel Road and Highway 46 West. The quaint landmark attraction dates back to 1886 and is surrounded by a large grassy picnic area and gazebo. The facility can be rented out for private events and is a perfect locale for an outdoor wedding amidst the vineyards. The Peachy Too Tasting Room is located on 2020 Nacimiento Lake Drive. Peachy Too is housed in a charming Swiss Chateau approximately four miles west of Highway 101 and is open weekends only. Visit www.peachycanyon.com for more information.

It encompasses more than 26,000 vineyard acres and more than 170 wineries. In 2004, thirteen wineries on Highway 46 West formed the Highway 46 West Wineries Group. This group was formed to promote the tasting rooms of the beautiful west side and to make people aware of the uniqueness of 46 West and the wines produced there. Paso Robles Wine Country is as unique and inviting as the people who have dedicated themselves to nurturing the vineyards and crafting fine wines. Visitors to Highway 46 West find the road less traveled is often marked by the thrill of discovery in this uncongested region. It’s an area where hospitality is first among a long list of qualities … where being friends and neighbors is as important as producing stellar wines. Highway 46 West is one thread that weaves among the vineyards and wineries connecting longtime estates with exciting new producers. Rolling hills, majestic oaks and lush vineyards await the wine lover at every turn. The tasting rooms of Highway 46 West invite you to enjoy our neighborhood, relax under the spell of our friendly environment and savor life while sipping our spectacular wines.

CASS VINEYARDS The tasting room at Cass Vineyards, which opened in 2005, offers a wonderful outdoor seating area under an ancient oak tree and a small café where guest can sample delicious food paired with the wonderful wines of Cass Vineyard and Winery. The boutique winery is a bit off the beaten path, but well worth the drive through some of the area’s most dramatic vistas. The winery features award-winning, estate-grown Rhône varietals – such as Viognier, Roussanne, Marsanne, Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah – grapes perfectly suited to the warm, dry region. A unique feature of winery is that all of the Rhône grapes grown are ENTAV certified. ENTAV (Establissement National Technique pour l’Amelioration de la Viticulture) is the national agency of France responsible for the quality of wine grape varieties. More than 90% of all French Vineyards are started with ENTAV certified plants and are only recently available in California. Cass wines are some of the very first wines made from ENTAV grapes grown here. Cass Vineyards and Winery is open Monday through Friday from noon to 5 p.m., Saturday and Sunday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. They are located at 7350 Linne Road in Paso Robles. For further information, call 1-805-239-1730 or visit their website at www.casswines.com

Book and Author Fair at Adelaida Cellars Adelaida Cellars presents a Book & Author Fair at its Westside Paso Robles wine estate from 1:30 to 5 p.m., December 8, featuring a handful of nationally known, published authors. Attendees will be able to engage writers as they present lectures and “author go-rounds,” and have the opportunity to purchase signed copies of their respective works on winemaking, vineyards, cooking, travel and topics that are of interest to children. Admission is free. Guests 21 years of age and older will be able to taste Adelaida’s critically acclaimed wines in the tasting room for a small fee. Driving directions and author information are available at www.adelaida.com. Adelaida owner Elizabeth Van Steenwyk, the published author of more than 70 books, conceived the book and author fair as a way of connecting avid readers with authors living in their community. “We have an interesting group of authors that the public will enjoy meeting,” said Van Steenwyk. “The author gorounds will give guests – especially aspiring writers – a chance to query authors on their work routines, influences and lifestyles.” Not widely known, author go-rounds consist of questions and answers between seated writers and a small semicircle of guests. Participating authors include: Sheridan Warrick, the author of The Way to Make Wine: How to Craft Superb Table Wines at Home; freelance journalist Mira Advani-Honeycutt who writes on food, wine, travel and arts. Her book, California’s Central Coast, The Ultimate Winery Guide: from Santa Barbara to Paso Robles, is available at major bookstores and amazon.com.; The two authors of Paso Robles: An American Terroir, Dr. Thomas J. Rice and Tracy G. Cervellone; Tony Johnston who has written more than 100 books including the award-winning children’s titles: The Wagon, Any Small Goodness and Bone by Bone by Bone; and authors of the Cahoots Cookbook, Lisa Jones and Jim Subject. Established in 1981, Adelaida Cellars is a family-owned and operated vineyard and winery situated 16 miles from the Pacific Ocean at 1,800 feet of elevation in the Santa Lucia Mountains. Its highly acclaimed Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Rhône varietals and Zinfandel originate in two principal vineyards (HMR and Viking) that are recognized for their chalky mountain soils, temperate climates and long growing seasons. The winery offers many interactive functions throughout the year: an inviting tasting room, educational seminars, wine club events, winemaker dinners, and seasonal festivals produced by the Paso Robles Wine Country Alliance (pasowine.com). Visit Adelaida Cellars at 5805 Adelaida Road, open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call 1-800-676-1232.

SCOTT CELLARS

Tasting Room of the Week:

How did I want to do it?” The soul-searching led to an impromptu job at a wine market. “I wanted to be a winemaker, but I’d never done anything like it before. So, first, I wanted to learn how to sell it.” The job at the store led to a job with a distributor and even at one point, a job selling the infamous “2-buck Chuck” brand, Charles Shaw – before it became a household name. Eventually, Fraser talked himself into a job as winemaker at Leeward Winery in Ventura. With no experience as a winemaker, he was self-taught in every facet of the business. “I called up UC Davis and bought all the books that someone in the oenology program would

all colors adorn an 800-square-foot tasting room that is something of the American dream come true. Scott Cellars, the brainchild of Peter Fraser (middle name, Scott), in Los Olivos is a boutique winery with a no-nonsense practical dreamer at its helm. He built the wood bar himself and the pictures on the wall are photos he took himself of the vineyards where he sources his grapes. “I was living in Los Angeles in 1992 when the riots hit,” recalls Fraser. “I simply sat and re-evaluated my life. What did I want to do?

buy – and I made wine at home. That’s how I learned.” No mentors, no great winemaking god in the background of his life, Peter Fraser decided what he wanted to be and worked hard to become that. That led him and his wife, Jennifer to San Marcos Avenue in Los Olivos where Scott Cellars was born. Producing about 1,000 cases of wine a year, Fraser’s plan calls for him to increase slowly and at intervals. “I am a one-man show. I am the Owner, Winemaker, Tasting Room Manager, Marketing Manager, Sales Manager. and Chief Cook and Bottle Washer,” he says. Jennifer, an administrator for a medical insurance company in nearby Santa Barbara, helps out in the tasting room at times. “She’s a real inspiration to me.” Fraser buys grapes from vineyards all over the Central Coast. His most popular wine, Cuvee J (created by Jennifer) is a Zinfandel, Syrah blend. But the Scott Cellars stable produces everything from Pinot Gris to Pinot Noir, Chardonnay to Zinfandel. Fraser says his homemade spicy crab bisque paired with his Pinot Gris is one of the best meals he’s had. “I can’t [over] sic emphasize the importance of working in and out of the cellar. The cellar taught me technique while sales taught me the
