WINERY FEATURE WINE COUNTRY THIS WEEK

TASTE … The Trend-Setter By Mark Storer

T

he wine-growing region of San Luis Obispo is tiny. Only 3,500 acres are under vines within two official AVAs; the Edna Valley and the Arroyo Grande Valley. In SLO, there’s really no prospect of growing any more as building and development have gone about as far as they can go. But big isn’t always better. Sometimes, class, panache and taste win out. The SLO County Vintner’s Association joined together in 2005 to open Taste, their downtown SLO interactive wine bar. The 16 wineries reasoned that since they were surrounded by Paso Robles growers to the north and Santa Barbara County growers to the south, they needed to draw attention to their small size that packs a big punch. So, rather than allow word of mouth to do all the work, the association opened a wine bar that specializes in their wines exclusively. Taste, however, is no simple wine bar with waiters in black shirts and pants pouring vintages. “We were one of the first to use the Enomatic,” explains Becky Gray, Director of the SLO Vintner’s Association.

8

The Enomatic, now found all over the US, is a device that allows the consumer to choose which wine they want to taste and have it poured automatically from the machine itself. Customers use a kind of credit card that they purchase from the counter and load that into the Enomatic and then choose the wine they want to try. The Enomatic is actually revolutionizing the wine tasting and wine sales industry. The Enomatic makes the consumer’s choice paramount and while there are always friendly staff nearby to offer help when wanted, essentially, the Enomatic and by extension, Taste, has created an interactive experience for the wine consumer. This allows the consumer more of a say over their choices and so more education takes place and wines get poured that perhaps wouldn’t in a normal winetasting setting. In keeping with its own unique traditions, though, Taste does more than pour and sell wine. “Wine Down Wednesdays” are featured each week and any one of the local winemakers or their representatives is on hand to discuss their wines. Taste is also available for private parties with enough

advance notice and can offer its own people to come and pour SLO County wines at events around town. In addition, local wine writers and professionals drop by to talk wine and introduce wine topics to educate visitors on SLO County wines. On November 24th, for example, Janet Penn Franks will be at Taste to discuss her new book entitled simply enough, “San Luis Obispo Wineries” from noon to three. These events are also an ode of sorts to local cuisine featuring artisan cheeses, for example from the SLO grocery, Muzio’s and truffles from the Truffle Gardens. “We specialize in domestic and imported cheeses and once a week, we get to show them off at Taste to pair them with the wines,” says Lori Miller, owner of Muzio’s Grocery. “The day after Thanksgiving, we’ll be at Taste along with Giussepe’s restaurant to sample wine and food for the holidays,” she adds. Taste, after all is really about taste. As the holidays get closer, Taste will also feature gift cards that can be used in the Enomatics themselves or for the purchase of bottles of wine, glasses or other items available in the store. $100 cards can be

www.bellalunawine.com (805) 434-5477 1850 Templeton Road, Templeton, CA purchased specially for $75 and $50 cards can be purchased for $40. Other events include dollar pours when all the machines are set to $1 per taste as well as special discounts on various bottles and cases of SLO wines. The wineries themselves have been more than pleased with Taste’s contribution as ambassador of their wines. “I think they do a great job,” said Fredericka Churchill-Thompson, owner of Claiborne and Churchill Winery. “Sometimes, they’ll even have stocked wines that we’ve run out of and so we can direct customers there to get hard to find things,” she said. Taste has also become part of the local food and social scene. San Luis Obispo is not a very large city and so restaurants in town can occasionally have a bit of wait time. “Instead of just hanging around, you can just walk down to Taste and try some of the local wines and it’s really quite a nice place to simply wait for your table,” Churchill-Thompson says. “We’re really very happy with them.” From ambassador of local wines to evening hang out to finder of the hard to find, Taste fulfills a lot of roles in San Luis Obispo. And like all things related to taste, Taste responds to the changes within its own community while also setting trends with its focus on the wines of a very special place nestled in between the giants along the Central California Coast. Taste is located at 1003 Osos Street in San Luis Obispo and is open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call (805) 269-TASTE or visit the website at www.taste-slo.com.

WINE COUNTRY THIS WEEK

Midlife Crisis Winery – Not All Crises Are Bad Ones by Jill Mittan

O

ne of the questions we are asked at Midlife Crisis Winery is how did we come up with the name for the winery. Well, the name is only a small part of what the winery is and hopes to become but it is emblematic of our decision to start the winery (as well as lots of other things in our life). Here goes the story of a midlife crisis and the winery that bears its name. First of all, Midlife Crisis Winery is a very small family operation. My husband, Kevin, and I are the owners and the winemakers and we do just about everything involved in winemaking and running the winery all on our own. We have no winery building of our own nor do we grow our own grapes … yet. We make wine on weekends in Paso Robles around jobs in the entertainment industry in Los Angeles. Midlife Crisis does have a tasting room in downtown Paso Robles with our tasting room manager, Allison, and a couple of part time employees helping us. What we do have is a passion for winemaking that sustains the seven-day-a-week schedule we maintain. Kevin and I had our first date at a winemaking event and were engaged at another. We decided to try to make a career of winemaking after years of home winemaking. We found we loved creating wine because it was something real and totally different than the world of our day jobs. When you work in television, the final product representing all the hard work of the dozens of folks that is just a series of electronic signals sent out into the ether for you to choose to watch or not. Wine is real and can be shared. It can turn a Thursday night dinner of leftovers into a celebration of family and friends. And we can say, “I made this,” too! The decision to try winemaking full time came in 2003 after lots of personal things in our lives coming together with a great real estate market in LA. It really involved a huge leap of faith for two normally very cautious human beings to stray from safety and security to chase this dream. But we leaped. By April of 2004, we had sold the house in LA and bought the property that will eventually be home to the winery and vineyard. We crushed our first grapes in August of 2004,

10

(it was Zinfandel by the way) and the Midlife Crisis Winery was real. Today we produce a fusion of Italian, Rhône and Bordeaux varietals that includes Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Syrah, Sangiovese, Barbera, Merlot and Zinfandel. We have a red blend and two sparkling wines that we have named in honor of our Australian Shepherds. We will introduce our 2006 Nebbiolo soon and plan a super Tuscan blend (aka Chianti) and a white blend in either 2008 or 2009. Our first vintage has sold out. We now have our second release in the bottle and it is well on its way to selling out. The third vintage is ready to bottle, and the fourth is just beginning the journey to become wine. We have been fortunate to win a whole bunch of awards for both vintages and to have lots of you taste our wines in our tasting room or at wine events and embrace our wines. We have learned a lot along the way – including that chasing this dream is a lot harder than we though it would be – but this crazy dream is also infinitely rewarding in ways we could never have imagined. There is more to the crazy dream coming in the future. We hope to build a sustainable winery on the land (which we have named the Crisis Solved Vineyard) along with some vineyards and whatever else we figure out. We hope you will come and share a little of our dream when you can. Visit us online at www.midlifecrisiswinery.com or at our tasting room in downtown Paso Robles at 1244 Pine Street. We are open Thursday through Monday from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Holiday Ceremony Lights Up Downtown Paso Robles The 20th annual “Holiday Lighting Ceremony” will officially bring holiday décor to downtown Paso Robles on Friday, November 23rd, the Friday after Thanksgiving. The tradition will find Mrs. Santa Claus and other costumed characters gathering at the downtown city park bandstand at 5:30 p.m. They will be joined there by townspeople dressed warmly. Just before 6 p.m. candles and songbooks will be distributed. When the clock tower strikes 6 p.m., Mrs. Claus will throw the giant

light switch, and the downtown lights in trees, shop windows and buildings will illuminate all at once. The mayor and other city officials will speak, followed by candlelight caroling with musical accompaniment. Free cookies and hot chocolate will conclude the evening’s festivities. The lighting ceremony is sponsored by the Paso Robles Main Street Association Merchants and RABOBANK. For more information, contact the Main Street office at (805) 2384103.

Looking for a unique holiday gift for your wine-loving friends? How about an ornament signed by their favorite winemaker(s)? W Do your shopping early at the holiday gathering of the Far Out Wineries in Paso Robles, on Friday, November 30. Or if you’re shopping is under control, just share a glass of cheer with the winemakers and owners of the Far Out Wineries, including: • Adelaida Cellars, whose red and white Rhône wines, as well as their Syrah, have scored in the 90s in Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate. R • Halter Ranch, which will showcase some of the 19 sustainablyfarmed Rhône and Bordeaux varieties and blends they produce. • Minassian-Young, known for their organically grown Zinfandels and Syrah, as well as Rhône and Bordeaux blends produced in select, hand-crafted lots. • And Opolo Vineyards, which boasts a range of estate-grown reds from its explosive, big mountain Zinfandel to an easy-going Sangiovese. This first-ever Far Out Wineries yuletide celebration will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. at Adelaida Cellars on 5805 Adelaida Road west of Paso Robles. “No seminars, just plenty of good wine, food and fun. We’ve planned a very festive event to help our customers get into the holiday spirit,” said owner Monica Villicana of Villicana Winery. “We all have loyal customers who drive out this time of the year to stock up on our wines for the holiday season. So we decided this would be a great way to thank them and spend a little time with them.” And this group of 16 boutique wineries from the western area of the Paso 1Robles region knows how to throw a party. “The Far Out Wineries do a good job with their special events,” says Stacie Jacobs, the executive director of the Paso Robles Wine Country Alliance. Wine judge Mike Stepanovich, executive director of the Bakersfield Wine Society, agrees. “I’m always up for a visit to the Far Out Wineries. They’re not really that far away, literally speaking, but ‘far out’ is a good description of their fun attitude.” The wineries will be serving a full spectrum of cheer – offering two to three great wines each, along with tasty appetizers and sparkling conversation about your favorite topic – wine. An added bonus for attendees will be a card that provides a special 10% discount on wine purchases and complimentary wine tasting at any and all of the Far Out Wineries during the entire month of December 2007. Admission to the holiday event is $18. For reservations, contact Judy at Norman Vineyards (805) 237-0138. Or for more information, go to www.faroutwineries.com. As they say, the Far Out Wineries are off the beaten path and worth the drive.

Annual Beaujolais Celebration at Adelaida Cellars In the wine trade, the term “cult” is usually associated with rare, pricy wines that are bought and sold at auction, sometimes changing hands several times before someone realizes they’re meant to be consumed rather than traded. At the other end of the spectrum is Beaujolais Nouveau, a wine and an annual harvest celebration started in France centuries ago that continues today as well as in other countries. This cult is all about enjoying the first wine of the vintage with good friends and hearty food on the third Thursday of each November. In honor of this practice, Adelaida Cellars presents its Annual Beaujolais Celebration and Fall Pickup Party at 6 p.m., Friday, November 16, in the Barrel Room of its west side Paso Robles facility. Chef extraordinaire Claude Chazalon will be serving traditional coq au vin (chicken with wine) for up to 120 guests, including wine club members wishing to pick up their fall shipments. The cost is $30 per person and is complimentary to all wine club members. Beaujolais Nouveau is made from the Gamay Beaujolais grape, and unlike most red wines, it is bottled without barrel aging prior to release. The wine is extremely rare in California and it is believed that Adelaida Cellars is its only Paso Robles producer. “Our goal is to capture the exuberant personality of the Gamay grape,” said winemaker Terry Culton. “This aromatic dry red wine is meant for immediate gratification and consumption.” Fruit for Adelaida’s Beaujolais

Nouveau was harvested August 29 at the winery’s HMR Estate Vineyard. One acre of Gamay Beaujolais was planted in 1964 on what was then called Hoffman Mountain Ranch. The historic vineyard also boasts the oldest Pinot Noir vines on the South Central Coast. Reservations can by made by calling 1-800-676-1232 or online at www.adelaida.com.

Established in 1981, Adelaida Cellars is a family-owned and operated vineyard and winery situated 16 miles from the Pacific Ocean at 1,800 feet of elevation in the Santa Lucia Mountains. Its highly acclaimed Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Rhône varietals and Zinfandel originate in two principal vineyards (HMR and Viking) that are recognized for their chalky mountain soils, temperate climates and long growing seasons. The winery offers many interactive functions throughout the year: an inviting tasting room, educational seminars, library tastings, wine club events, winemaker dinners and seasonal festivals produced by the Paso Robles Wine Country Alliance (pasowine.com).

Tasting Room of the Week:

ORCHID HILL VINEYARD by Dave Wilcox

P

airing wine with fine cheeses isn’t easy, but the folks at Orchid Hill Vineyard & Winery have diligently been up to the task. The result is a memorable tasting experience that transforms a visit to the winery’s handsome tasting room in downtown Paso Robles. “It was a labor of love,” said Susan West, Orchid Hill’s public relations director. Visitors to the Orchid Hill tasting room indulge in a sensory experience that goes beyond simply sampling wine – although that alone is worth a trip. The wine and cheese pairings – featured Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays – are part of what West calls a “full-service” tasting room. “Art, wine, music, food – it all goes together.” Local olive oil produced by Templeton’s Allure Estates is also available at the tasting room, along with cookbooks from local catering favorite Cahoots. Opened in April, the Orchid Hill tasting room is directly across from Paso Robles’ historic City Park and is part of the town’s vibrant dining and wine-tasting scene. A sweeping granite tasting bar and hand-

14

crafted cabinetry combine with a stampedconcrete floor to create a warm environment that’s enhanced by attractive lighting and eyecatching original artwork. Vibrant, textured paintings of orchids by renowned artist Jean-Pierre de Rothschild decorate the walls of what was once an auto parts store. That is, the paintings that aren’t flying out the door. West said 38 of de Rothschild’s works have sold just since the Paso Robles Wine Festival weekend. The “Orchid Room,” a glass enclosed area at the rear, is filled with exotic orchids grown and tended by Estrella Schenkhuizen, whose husband, Mike, owns the winery. The room is available for private tastings. It is Mike Schenkhuizen’s “entrepreneurial spirit,” said West, that has driven not only the Orchid Hill tasting room, but the winery, to success. www.winecountrythisweek.com

“When he sees what needs to be done, he just does it.” That included assembling a top-notch team – including viticulturist Jim Smoot, vineyard manager Dias Ruiz and winemaker Dan Kleck – to help nurture the winery’s growth and development. Orchid Hill’s estate wines are made using grapes grown on the winery’s 51-acre vineyard in the Templeton Gap region west of Paso Robles. Known for limestone soil and a climate featuring hot days cooled by lateafternoon breezes sweeping through from the ocean, the Templeton Gap is favored by winemakers producing Pinot Noir and Syrah. Indeed, those are the featured varietals in Orchid Hill’s program. Additionally winemaker Kleck produces Zinfandel, Muscat Canelli, Viognier, and the soon-to-be released 2005 Sangiovese and 2006 Grenache. The 2004 Zinfandel garnered a 91 in the Wine Spectator! The Orchid Hill Tasting Room and Art Gallery is at 1140 Pine Street and is open Thursday to Monday from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Appointments to visit Tuesdays and Wednesdays can be made by calling (805) 237-7525.

WINE COUNTRY THIS WEEK ATTRACTIONS

Donati Family Launches Newly-Released Wines It’s with great excitement and enthusiasm that the Donati Family launches their newly released wines: 2006 Pinot Blanc, 2006 Pinot Gris, 2005 Chardonnay, 2004 Merlot, 2005 Claret and 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon. Family viticulturist Matt Donati states, “Our philosophy is to grow grapes to the highest quality, so wines made from our fruit can meet superior product expectations of winemaker Dan Kleck. This requires that I pay close attention to detail, evaluate the potential of new varieties that will thrive in our climate, and give Dan everything he needs to succeed with his winemaking processes. This passion for detail is what best serves our customers, and is reflected in our wines.” The Donatis came to Paicines (pronounced pie see ness), in California’s Central Coast, in 1998 when they purchased land that would

soon become home to Matt Donati and his family. Since then, Matt and his father Ron, engaged in planting the family vineyard and planning their state-of-the-art winery. The vineyards developed by the Donati family are on some of the same acres that Almaden Vineyards developed in Paicines. At the time of purchase, the land had been fallow for 10 to 15 years, but a small block of Pinot Blanc still remained. Five acres of this Pinot Blanc were left standing, and today still deliver outstanding fruit. Admittedly, tonnage is minuscule, but the Pinot Blanc flavors are exceptional. Donati Family Vineyard is located at the intersection of Highway 46 and Vineyard Avenue in Templeton and is open daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, visit www.donatifamilyvineyard.com.

OLD EDNA: New Life in an Old Town by Dave Wilcox

P

attea Torrence jumped from the bed of a pickup truck and hauled an old chair to the dusty driveway. She had acquired the piece and several others to add to the stock of the antique store she owns at the historic Old Edna Town Site in the heart of the Edna Valley wine country. It’s not unusual finding Torrence working hard at Old Edna – in the 10 years since she and her husband purchased the two-acre site, that determination and willingness to get the dirty work done has helped transform the dilapidated buildings into a vibrant gateway to Edna Valley. In conversation, Torrence talks about the buildings of Old Edna as living entities, and she has breathed life into them. A woodsided, tin-roofed building that fronts the twolane highway has been restored and now houses the antique shop, an upstairs meeting room and a deli. But the centerpiece of the town site is the 100-year-old country farmhouse that sits just behind the deli and which has been turned into a bed-and-breakfast inn. Taken together, Old Edna is a Wine Country hub, where tourists can get informed advice about the valley’s wineries while putting together a picnic lunch to pair with their favorite local vintages. “As we care for our business,” said Torrence, “we also realize the importance of our central location as a proud ‘central core’ to an amazing, heart-felt experience to be shared by all.” Kim Frederick oversees a deli menu of sandwiches made using fresh-baked breads and homemade salads using local produce whenever possible, along with other goodies.

16

TOWN SITE OPEN HOUSE – NOVEMBER 24TH 5:30 TO 8:30 P.M. Dianna Frey’s vintage inspired jewelry, crystal Christmas garlands, German glass and glitter encrusted books along with a few fellas playing their horns and treats from the Deli.

Frederick joined Torrence earlier this year and, said Torrence, has elevated the deli into a spot favored by locals and tourists alike. It’s also a favorite of bicyclists garbed in colorful gear, who often stop for a respite on one of the deli’s patios before resuming their tour of the region’s rolling hills. For those fortunate enough to make Old Edna their home-base for a Wine Country vacation, they soon find Suite Edna is hardly just another Wine Country bed-and-breakfast getaway. Sure, the 1,200-square-foot, threebedroom cottage is charming, with restored maple floors, a French country farmhouse

The fun-loving crew at Old Edna

kitchen and a shady front porch. Beyond its charms, though, is a heart and soul that lends a sense of comfort and hominess that guests might not find at inns with a little higher gloss. Torrence is the person primarily responsible for the cottage’s graceful beauty, although she said many have helped in the restoration process. Torrence, who grew up in rural San Luis Obispo County, once boarded her horse as a teenager at the town site, and said reinvigorating Old Edna after it was abandoned has been among the most rewarding accomplishments of her life. Unlike most other bed-and-breakfast inns, Suite Edna is rented exclusively. In other words, there’s no mingling of strangers around the breakfast table. Instead, guests may invite their friends to stay in one of the www.winecountrythisweek.com

other two suites, or a family may rent the cottage. In fact, Torrence touts Old Edna as an ideal spot for children. For a few days, at least, kids can live out a country childhood, exploring a number of nooks around the property, or playing tetherball to the rear of the cottage. There’s plenty of leisure opportunities, as well, for grown-ups exploring the Edna Valley Wine Country. A small “breakfast cottage” near the farmhouse provides a private retreat in which to enjoy a glass of wine and a good book. Elsewhere, Torrence is turning a “gypsy wagon” built by her father – which once was pulled in parades – into a more bohemianstyle haven for guests. The suites themselves are tastefully appointed by Torrence, whose decorative eye turns each room into a unique experience. Suite Edna is the centerpiece, a two-room suite with French doors leading to a private deck. A king-size feather bed is in one room, while the sitting room evokes an Old World feel. The other two rooms, Suite Grace and Suite Pattea, have their own unique style and there’s a single bathroom with a wonderful clawfoot tub. Meal vouchers are provided for guests to use at the deli, although the kitchen is fully equipped for guests who prefer cooking. A barbecue is also provided and is a popular year-round choice. Guests who choose not to use the vouchers receive reduced rental rates. Old Edna is located on Highway 227 south of San Luis Obispo near the intersection with Price Canyon Road. Information about rates and reserving Suite Edna are available at www.oldedna.com, or calling (805) 544-8062.

Falcon Nest Winery – Just Like a Trip to Tuscany If you’ve ever had the good fortune to visit a winery in Italy, you know what it’s like to enjoy the combination of great wine, beautiful scenery and most of all, warm and welcoming people. Now you don’t have to endure a 12-hour plane flight to experience the delights of Italy. Falcon Nest Winery is the creation of Francesco Grande and his lovely wife, Carolynn. Francesco was born in Calabria and grew up in the Tuscany region of Italy. Like so many of his fellow countrymen, his passion for food and wine has been the focus of his life. For twenty-eight years he ran a successful and very, very busy restaurant in Los Angeles. It took a long-time friend and customer to convince him that he needed a little vacation. A trip up to the Paso Robles wine-growing region was just supposed to provide a little rest and relaxation. But with only one look at the stunningly beautiful rolling hills of Central California, Francesco knew that it was time for a new challenge. It was time to return to his roots. “Wine has been in my family for centuries. My father was a winemaker, my grandfather was a winemaker as was his father before him and his father before him! In Italy, it is a way of life,” says Francesco. With the gusto he gave to his cooking, Francesco has turned his land into some of the finest vineyards in the area. His picturesque little winery on the top of the hill looks over a seemingly endless sea of vines. He now has fifty-five acres planted in Cabernet, Merlot, Syrah, Petite Verdot and Zinfandel. “I love the art of cooking, but once the food is on the table, it is soon gone. There is an art to winemaking as well plus it lasts a lot longer. With aging wine becomes better. Food becomes worse!” says

CHATEAU MARGENE A micro winery specializing in the production of small lots of luxury, handcrafted Cabernet Sauvignon. Chateau Margene produces 3,000 cases per year and focuses on viticulture and winemaking practices that offer maximum expression of the Paso Robles terrior. SANTA BARBARA COUNTY WINE COUNTRY THIS WEEK

Santa Ynez Valley Artists Studio Tour, Nov. 17-18 The 2007 Santa Ynez Valley Artists’ Studio Tour (SYVAST) will take place the weekend of November 17-18. Eighteen Valley artists, working in a wide variety of subjects, styles and mediums will greet visitors in their private studios from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on those two days. Included in the price of the ticket, which is $25 per person or $40 for couples, will be a wine and cheese party at the Wildling Art Museum on Saturday, from 4 to 6 p.m., where participants can mingle with the artists, see more examples of their work and savor the current exhibition, “The Poetry of Nature: Paintings and Lithographs by Russell Chatham.” Proceeds from ticket sales and 20% of the sale of artists’ work that weekend benefit the Wildling Art Museum, a museum dedicated to the art of America’s wilderness. Artists who are helping the Wildling by participating in SYVAST this year include landscape painters, Jim Farnum and Gwen Cates, both of whom have been featured in the Santa Barbara Visual Arts Studio Tours; abstract painters, Rebecca Gomez and Esther Munger; sculptors John Cody, Blake Rankin and Pat Roberts; printmaker,

Pamela Zwehl-Burke, who until recently taught at Santa Barbara City College; furniture-maker, Bud Tullis, who worked for the famous designer, Paul Tuttle, will open their studios for this benefit as well as Suzan Hamilton-Todd, well-known for her exciting paintings of horses, and more recently, birds of prey; Joe Knowles, a Cherokee artist whose works include American bison; Renee Kelleher, known for her pastoral landscapes; Teresa McNeil MacLean, who creates her jewel-like landscapes with prisma color pencils; Carol Millican, whose abstract figurative work can look like stained glass, and Christine McCowan Kenny, a virtuoso when it comes to watercolor paintings of flowers, though she now also paints landscapes in a variety of media. More information about all the artists and images of their work can be found on the museum’s website at www.wildlingmuseum.org. Pre-registration is recommended, and tickets can be purchased by sending a check to SYVAST, Wildling Art Museum, P.O. Relax and let Santa Barbara Adventure Company take care of all the details for a unique wine-blending, teambuilding activity. Their knowledgeable guides will meet your group at your hotel where you will preview the day’s plan and head over to the local cooperative winery called Cellar 205, home of the Oreana Winemaking Company. This is a great opportunity to sample and learn about local wines and the winemaking process. Winemaker Christian Garvin will greet your group upon arrival and introduce you to some theories of wine blending. Your group will be split into teams and the competition will begin. Each team will be given three or more varieties to work with, as well as any necessary tools. Teams will strive to create the best blend while utilizing terminology and concepts employed by winemakers and sommeliers. Ultimately the team must come to a consensus on which blend best represents their efforts and will out perform the blends of their competitors. The winery owner will judge the blends and provide feedback. Afterward, each team will design their own label and participate in the bottling process. Each team member will go home with a bottle of his or her special blend. This activity will not only educate participants about the winemaking process, but will also sharpen negotiating skills, improve team communication and foster team cooperation and
