WINE COUNTRY NEWS WINE COUNTRY THIS WEEK

MIDLIFE CRISIS WINERY Following a ‘Crazy Dream’ by Dave Wilcox

J

ill and Kevin Mittan remain in the midst of a mid-life crisis. And that’s okay. Their “crazy dream” of having a winery – the Midlife Crisis Winery – while holding down day jobs in the post-production field of the entertainment industry a couple of hundred miles away continues to thrive. They are moving forward with plans for their own winery building and a sustainably farmed vineyard – which the couple has named Crisis Solved Vineyard. “We want to make full use of wind power and solar power and also want to use grey water,” said Jill Mittan. Sustainable farming and energy use, she noted, makes both economic and environmental sense over the long term. In the meantime, Midlife Crisis Winery continues to cultivate its customer base through its downtown Paso Robles tasting room, which is now open daily. And the Mittans continue commuting on the weekends to Paso Robles and various tasting events around California. The odometers on the couple’s vehicles are

6

a testament to their well-traveled lifestyle. Jill’s Subaru Forrester has racked up about 182,000 miles, while Kevin has logged more than 260,000 miles on his GMC Sierra truck. Their two Australian shepherds, Sydney and Roo Boy, are seasoned travelers. All the traveling and their non-stop schedule is worth it, said Jill. “Making wine is re-energizing,” she said, “because it’s so different from what we do in our careers. It’s grounded and real and at the end of the day there’s this product and you can say, ‘We made this and people enjoy it.’ That is cool.” Midlife Crisis Winery went from dream to reality in 2004. During a three-month period, the couple sold their house in Los Angeles (during the real estate boom) and found a smaller residence, purchased about 22 acres in Paso Robles and became a bonded winery. While starting the winery was a leap of faith, the Mittans had already developed a solid track record as winemakers. They have studied at UC Davis and trained with a commercial winemaker for years in Southern California, where as amateur winemakers they garnered more than 60 regional and international awards. www.winecountrythisweek.com

Much of the fruit they used in their garage winery came from Paso Robles. When they decided to start a commercial winery, their respect for the grapes grown in the Paso Robles region led them to look for property there. Jill’s winemaking inspiration stretches back to her childhood, growing up in an Irish-Italian neighborhood of Ohio. There she watched some of the older Italian men make wine using traditional Old World grapes that they either grew in their yards, or managed to get their hands on. Those Italian winemaking roots live on at the Midlife Crisis Winery, where varietals such as Sangiovese, Barbera, Pinot Grigio, and, more recently, Nebbiolo, are among an eclectic mix that also includes Rhone and Bordeaux grapes. They make a couple of sparkling wines and a dry rosé. “I like to make wines that are very food friendly,” said Jill. The fruit-forward style of Midlife Crisis also includes a robust blend bottled under the label Roo Boy Red. It’s made using Petite Sirah, Merlot and Tempranillo. Jill Mittan’s experience with the Old World-style Pinot Grigio also influences how its made at Midlife

WINE COUNTRY THIS WEEK WINE COUNTRY NEWS Crisis, with oak added to give it a more rounded mouth-feel with a long, creamy finish. Again, said Mittan, it’s a more food-friendly version of the wine. Growing the winery remains part of the Mittans’ future plans, although it will be gradual. For one thing, Kevin and Jill remain the winery’s only staff, serving as the winemakers, cellar workers, bottling line and sales and marketing department. (They do have a tasting room manager holding down the fort.) Their initial vintage, 2004, produced 800 cases. Since then, they’ve steadily increased to 1,500 in 2005, 2,200 in 2006 and about 3,000 in 2007. Midlife Crisis is one of about a dozen wineries with tasting rooms in downtown Paso Robles, which is generating a generous amount of buzz nationally for its combination of top-notch wine tasting options along with cutting edge restaurants – all within comfortable walking distance. A recent issue of Bon Apetit magazine even named Paso Robles one of that nation’s top small towns for “foodies.” As for the winery’s name, the inspiration came from an email in which Jill’s brother, responding to the news the couple was starting a winery, wrote: “Wouldn’t a sports car have been cheaper.” A sports car being the symbol of a mid-life crisis, the connection was made and a name was born. And now visitors to the Midlife Crisis tasting room will find stickers with sports cars on them and stress balls shaped like a little red sports car. The tasting room can be found about a block from Paso Robles downtown park plaza, at the corner of Pine and 13th streets. It is open from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. You can also visit the winery’s new website at www.midlifecrisiswinery.com, or call at (805) 237-8730. www.winecountrythisweek.com

PREMIER ACCOMMODATIONS SLO County Sitters: An Answer to an Age-Old Problem by Mark Storer While it has become rather common to see young or newly married couples making the rounds of the Central Coast Wine Country, the fact is, childless folks are still the minority among wine drinkers in America. That means that a lot of people who want to experience the joys of a day of wine tasting or a night out in Wine Country have to make arrangements to leave the kids at home, with a relative willing to help out or a babysitter, right? Well, not anymore. Enter Tina Porter to the Central Coast wine scene. A true entrepreneur, Porter became aware of a need that wasn’t being filled and so she began to do her research to find out how to fill it. The result is SLO County Sitters Incorporated. “My husband and I travel quite a bit and I have a one-year-old daughter and a threeyear-old daughter and I saw in other places

what we didn’t have on the Central Coast – a qualified nanny and sitter service like you find in Europe and other places,” says Porter. SLO County Sitters isn’t just a group of people who will come to your hotel and watch your children, either. “We screen everyone who works for us rigorously,” says Porter. “I have a pre-school teacher who works for me who says her school didn’t screen her this well.” Indeed, all of Porter’s sitters and nannies are folks with backgrounds in childcare. “We don’t just come and watch the kids. We provide age-appropriate activities and educational games and we never rely on the television to baby-sit the kids,” says Porter. SLO County Sitters opened for business in December of 2007, but already they are well-known on the Central Coast. From Santa Maria to Cambria, from Paso Robles to San Luis Obispo, SLO County Sitters provides age-appropriate and professional

childcare for anyone on the coast whether tourists or residents. “I had one customer who was staying at the Cambria Pines Lodge on business and he found us in the directory there,” says Porter. “So, he called his wife up in the Bay Area and told her to pack the kids and bring them down. He called us and he was able to turn a business trip into a vacation for the whole family,” she adds. Now, it’s possible to have the best of both worlds, Porter says. The kids don’t have to be dragged along to dinner or wine tasting against their will and parents know that the kids aren’t just sitting in the hotel room watching television. “We’ll provide all kinds of activities including taking kids to the beach or whatever the parents want,” says Porter. SLO County Sitters can be reached by calling (805) 541-9300 or online at www.SLOCountySitters.com.

Anglim 2005 Best Barrel Blend Perfectly Paired with Six-Spice Beef Short Ribs As autumn wanes and winter approaches, we start to crave rich, hearty foods and fuller wines to accompany them. One of Steve and Steffanie Anglim’s favorites is beef short ribs; they are relatively easy to prepare, and will satisfy both elegant dinner-party guests and hungry four-year-olds. Steve Anglim borrowed this recipe from one published in Food & Wine (April 2008) by Shea Gallante from Promiscuous Food: Recipes that Pair with Many Wines, to pair with his 2005 Best Barrel Blend. This Rhône red blend comprised of 45% Mourvèdre, 45% Syrah, and 10% Grenache has a very rich, earthy character that beautifully compliments the succulent spice of the beef. Steve serves these ribs with plenty of pan sauce and chunks of bread for capturing every delicious drop. If they are lucky enough to have leftovers, the Anglims shred some of the beef and add corn tortillas and hot sauce for a mid-week feast. Located downtown in Paso Robles’ 120-year-old train depot, Anglim is a small, family-owned label producing vineyard-designate Rhône varietals and blends plus limited-release family favorites including Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon. Winemaker Steve Anglim realizes that stellar wines begin in the vineyard, and is passionate about sourcing the finest fruit for Anglim wines. Anglim hand-crafts about 4,000 cases per year, striving for a balanced style, with enough character to be cellared but enough elegance to be enjoyed now. Visit Anglim at 740 Pine Street, Paso Robles, CA 93446. Tasting hours are Thursday through Monday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. except Sunday, noon to 6 p.m., and by appointment or chance. For more information, call (805) 227-6813 or visit the website at www.anglimwinery.com.

SIX-SPICE BEEF SHORT RIBS • 1 tablespoon dried porcini mushrooms (mixed is OK too) • 1-1/2 teaspoons black peppercorns • 1 teaspoon kosher salt • 1-1/2 teaspoons ground coriander • 1-1/2 teaspoons powdered ginger • 1-1/2 teaspoons smoked sweet paprika • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves • 5 pounds beef short ribs, 1 inch thick, boned and trimmed of excess fat • 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced • 1 large carrot, thinly sliced • 2 inner celery ribs, thinly sliced • 2 garlic cloves, thickly sliced • 2 cups dry red wine, such as the Anglim 2005 Best Barrel Blend • 2 cups beef stock or low-sodium broth • 1/4 cup sugar Preheat the oven to 300°. In a spice grinder (a clean coffee grinder will do, too), pulse mushrooms, peppercorns and salt to a fine powder. Add the coriander, ginger, paprika and cloves and pulse to combine. Rub the spice blend all over the beef short ribs. Heat the oil in a large skillet. Add the short ribs and brown over moderate heat, about 12 minutes. Scatter the onion, carrot, celery and garlic in a medium roasting pan. Set the short ribs on top, cover tightly with foil and roast for about 2-1/2 hours, until tender. Meanwhile, pour off the fat in the skillet and return it to high heat. Add the wine, stock and sugar and bring to a boil, scraping up any bits from the bottom of the pan. Simmer over moderately high heat until reduced to 1 cup, about 15 minutes. Transfer the glaze to a heatproof cup. Preheat the broiler. Transfer the short ribs to a plate and pour the pan juices and vegetables into a bowl. Skim off all of the fat. Transfer the pan juices and vegetables to a blender. Add 1/2 cup of the glaze and puree the pan sauce until very smooth. Return the short ribs to the roasting pan and brush with 1/4 cup of the glaze. Broil 8 inches from the heat for about 3 minutes, until caramelized and sizzling. Turn the ribs and repeat the process with the remaining 1/4 cup of glaze. Serve the ribs with the pan sauce. MAKE AHEAD The short ribs can be prepared through Step 3 and refrigerated overnight. Broil just before serving.

PREFERRED RESTAURANTS ROBIN’S RESTAURANT Sometimes a place just fits. You know it by looking at it, you know as soon as walk up the path and in the door that this is a spot that simply belongs right where it is, doing exactly what it is doing. That, in a word or two, would describe the Cambria restaurant known fondly – and to many – as Robin’s Restaurant. Located in a charming and nicely weathered old home in this historic seaside town, they offer an eclectic menu that has pleased locals and visitors since they opened their doors in 1985. The interior (with its fireplace) and the spacious, multi-leveled heated deck surrounded by flowers and vines are a bit eclectic as well, and it all blends together to match the setting, just as owner Shanny Covey intended it to be: warm, informal, comfortable and unique. And it should be noted that those gardens are the perfect setting for a small reception. So how to define “eclectic” when it comes to menus? Well, how about

C AYUCOS

by Charles Neave “Thursday Night Sushi Night.” Or lobster enchiladas, Tandoori chicken, salmon bisque, Vietnamese lumpia, Malaysian green curry, pork osso buco and a juicy Angus beef burger with white cheddar and grilled sweet onions. All on the same menu. Then there’s the monthly Prix Fixe Dinners on the second Friday of each month that feature different flavors from around the world. If that is not what eclectic means, then we are looking at different dictionaries. But, it all somehow works, and wonderfully so. Then there is the extensive wine list, which while pretty straightforward also has more than a few surprises. All of which makes a visit to this charming part of the coast an even more enjoyable journey. Robin’s Restaurant is open daily, for lunch from 11 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. and for dinner from 5 to 9:30 p.m. (10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday). There are brunch specials on Sunday until 3 p.m. They are in Cambria at 4095 Burton Drive. For more information on the restaurant, their catering services or to make reservations call (805) 927-5007. SCULPTERRA WINERY O

pened to the public just one year ago, Sculpterra Winery and Sculpture Garden has made an indelible mark in Paso Robles Wine Country, fusing art, wine and the earth together in an inspiring “winescape.” The one year anniversary celebration held during the Paso Robles Harvest Festival on October 17-18, 2008, treated guests to an evening of highly accoladed wines and a serene live acoustic musical tour through the gently lit sculpture garden. The musical performance at the last sculpture at the end of the evening’s tour was highlighted by a bright falling star streaming across the starlit sky above. It was this type of Wine Country experience that owner Dr. Warren Frankel had envisioned many years ago when he planted the first Cabernet Sauvignon vines on his 120 acre Frankel Family Estate Vineyards. Dr. Frankel’s love for sculpture began more than forty years ago while spending a summer traveling Europe as an eighteen-year-old college student. While hitchhiking from Bergen Norway the fjords to Oslo, he stumbled upon Frogner Park, which exhibited the complete life collection of sculptor Gustav Vigeland. The large, beautiful outdoor sculptures captivated him. Many years later, Dr. Frankel met John Jagger, a renowned sculptor. Dr. Frankel discussed with John the idea of creating an outdoor sculpture garden to complement his winery and vineyards. To the delight of Dr. Frankel, John agreed to

14

work exclusively for Sculpterra Winery and Vineyards to create a stunning sculpture garden. Although the sculpture garden and beautiful grounds seem to take center stage, Sculpterra wines impress visitors to the winery as well. Sculpterra wines have won more than 11 gold medals in just the first year and have earned accolades from a wide array of wine critics. The primarily red wine portfolio features Cabernet Sauvignon and several masterfully crafted red blends, Syrah, Merlot, Petite Sirah and Zinfandel. The wineries first estate Viognier will be released in spring of 2009. Sculpterra wines are rich and extracted, but made with a balanced elegance. The Frankel Family Vineyards and Sculpterra Winery are a family affair, with the youngest son, Cal Poly Viticulture student Paul Frankel, learning hands on in the family vineyard and in the cellar. Paul is currently producing his first solo Pinot Noir. The small winery cellar is located adjacent to the tasting room, where the smells of fermentation and oak barrels permeate during harvest. The tasting room offers wine tasting, unique gifts and gourmet foods, as well as limited editions of John Jagger’s sculptures and is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday through Monday. Appointments are welcome Monday through Thursday. For more information, call 1-888-306-8881 or visit www.scultperra.com.

EBERLE WINERY Celebrating 30 Years of Fine Winemaking in Paso Robles by Marcy DeGarimore

G

ary Eberle is a man who lives with passion – passion for life, passion for wine, and, most importantly, a passion for Paso Robles. His vision to create a world-class, wine-growing region began in 1973 when he founded the fourth winery in Paso Robles (there are now nearly 200) and the first local winery to distribute wines on a national and international basis. After creating the Paso Robles Appellation in 1983, Gary dedicated his life’s work to educating people about the region as a whole and, specifically, about his own Eberle wines. All that passion paid off. To date, Eberle is one of the highest awardwinning wineries in the United States. Eberle Winery specializes in varietals including Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Viognier, Barbera, Zinfandel, Syrah and Muscat Canelli. In fact, Gary Eberle was the first American winemaker to grow and produce a 100% Syrah wine. Today, all of Eberle’s wines are grown in Paso Robles and aged in French and American oak barrels in 17,000 square feet of underground caves. The winery offers complimentary wine tasting and tours of the caves, which take place daily every half-hour. Eberle is also well known for its monthly Guest Chef Winemaker Dinners featuring some of the most talented chefs from around the world. Former chefs include Michel Richard, Susan Spicer, Joyce Goldstein, Scott Boswell and Billy Reid. Visit Eberle Winery on any given weekend and you just might see Gary himself, behind the barbecue offering complimentary appetizers to visiting guests. What you’ll always find, however, are world-class wines in a relaxed atmosphere, complimentary tastings and fascinating tours, two friendly standard poodles to greet you at the door, and a taste of the passion that helped make Paso Robles Wine Country what it is today. Join us in 2009 as Eberle Winery celebrates 30 years of fine winemaking in Paso Robles! We’ll celebrate with special sales in the Tasting Room, events at the winery, cruises to Costa Rica and the Baltic States and more! Eberle Winery is located at 3810 Highway 46 East, 3.5 miles east of Highway 101 in Paso Robles, CA. Tasting Room is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the winter and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the summer. For more information, call (805) 238-9607 or visit the website at www.EberleWinery.com.

Annual Beaujolais Nouveau Celebration at Adelaida Cellars Simeon quake of December 2003, and subsequently founded Safran Caterer.

About Adelaida Cellars

Emulating the festive occasion established by vignerons in the Beaujolais region of France, Adelaida Cellars presents its Annual Beaujolais Nouveau Celebration at 6 p.m., Friday, November 21, to salute the first release of the 2008 Central Coast vintage. Chef Claude Chazalon of Safran Caterer will prepare traditional French peasant fare to accompany Adelaida’s 2008 Gamay Noir. The cost is $25 per person or complimentary to all wine club members. Reservations are required via 1-800-676-1232 x19 or www.adelaida.com. Last year’s Beaujolais Nouveau Celebration was completely sold out when more than 100 guests dined on Chef Chazalon’s traditional coq au vin and the 2007 Gamay Noir. This year, he will be serving duck and pork cassoulet accompanied by a salad and dessert. As in France, Adelaida’s Beaujolais Nouveau is made from the Gamay Noir grape (precisely Gamay Noir à Jus Blanc). Unlike most red wines, Beaujolais Nouveau is intended for immediate consumption and thus, is fermented and then bottled without barrel or bottle aging prior to release. “Our Gamay Noir was made according to the traditional Beaujolais model of macération carbonique where whole grape clusters are fermented without crushing,” said Winemaker Terry Culton. “Yeast penetrates the skins so that each grape functions like a microfermenter. The result is a fruit-forward wine with vivid aromas.” Grapes for Adelaida’s 2008 Gamay Noir were harvested September 2 from the winery’s HMR Estate Vineyard in west side Paso Robles. One acre of Gamay Noir was planted in 1964 on what was then called Hoffman Mountain Ranch. The historic vineyard also boasts the oldest Pinot Noir vines along the South Central Coast. The Old World Beaujolais Nouveau celebration is officially launched at midnight on Beaujolais Nouveau Day, the third Thursday of November.

Situated 14 miles from the Pacific Ocean at nearly 2,000 feet of elevation, Adelaida Cellars is one of the most respected wineries along California’s central coast. The award-winning Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Syrah and Rhône varietals of this family owned and operated winery originate in two principal estate vineyards (HMR and Viking) that are highly regarded for their lean calcareous soils, temperate climates and intensely flavored fruit. Adelaida Cellars offers many interactive functions including an inviting tasting room, private wine club events, educational seminars, and regional festivals (see pasowine.com).

About Claude Chazalon One of the most popular chefs in Paso Robles, Claude Chazalon owned several restaurants in Paris, France before he and his wife Chrystel opened Paris, a Paso Robles eatery with the ambiance and menu of a French bistro. Preferred Tasting Room:

J. LOHR VINEYARDS & WINES Seeing the Future by Michael Cervin

T

he name Jerry Lohr is nearly synonymous with the Paso Robles wine industry. He has been at the wine game over 30 years and in that time has helped place Paso Robles and Monterey counties squarely on the world wine map. Originally from South Dakota roots, Jerry opened his first “wine center” in 1974 in San Jose, a time when wine didn’t hold the caché it does now. Understanding the viability of the growing regions in San Luis Obispo County, he opened a second wine center in Paso Robles in 2001. The success of both tasting rooms, reflecting the different geographic regions, is a testament to Lohr’s ability to envision the future of Paso Robles. “We focus on flavor from vineyard to bottle,” says winemaker Jeff Meier. The tasting room features an incredible diversity of wines including the limited production J. Lohr Vineyard Series. These are wines comprised of Cabernet Sauvignon,

18

Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and other standard varietals. The J. Lohr Estates are widely available wines and include their popular, if unusual, Valdiguié, a light, simple red wine similar to Gamay. “Valdiguié is a red wine with training wheels,” Meier says. “It’s suited to a nouveau style of red wine, sort of like Beaujolais on steroids. It’s a novelty, but it sells well, and we even have international distribution.” They produce approximately 14,000 cases of Valdiguié. The Cypress Vineyards label aims for everyday drinkability and include Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot and White Zinfandel. The tasting room, located near the airport is open, spacious and bright, with exposed wood trusses and mottled stained concrete floors. The homey, schoolhouse feel welcomes guests and is a decidedly unintimidating place. The array of wines offered is vast and available at a variety of price points. Gift items like silk clothing, tampanades and preserves from a local caterer are available for purchase. J. Lohr also has a vast selection of high-end cookbooks from well known restaurants like www.winecountrythisweek.com

the French Laundry and Bouchon, to numerous fun, everyday cookbooks that highlight delicious, simple recipes. One of their most popular non-wine items are yard signs with sayings like, “Girls Just Wanna Have Wine” and “Wine is Life.” J. Lohr’s Paso Robles Wine Center is located at 6169 Airport Road in Paso Robles and is open every day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. There are no tasting fees, with the exception of the high-end J. Lohr Cuveé Series. Visitors select six complimentary tastings, which include current releases of the J. Lohr Vineyard Series, J. Lohr Estates and Cypress Vineyards. For the Cuvée Vineyards and limitedrelease wines (such as mature vintage and pre-release wines), there is a $2 fee per pour, or $5 for three pours. Picnics are encouraged and the views are as great as the wines. The facility is handicap accessible. Contact them at (805) 239-8900 or www.eberlewinery.com for more information.

Mrs. Clause Will Light Up Downtown Paso Robles at Holiday Lighting Ceremony, Friday, November 28th The 22nd annual “Holiday Lighting Ceremony” will officially bring holiday décor to downtown Paso Robles on Friday, November 28th, the Friday after Thanksgiving. The tradition will find Mrs. Santa Claus and other costumed characters gathering at the downtown city park bandstand at 5:30 p.m. They will be joined there by townspeople dressed warmly. Just before 6 p.m. candles and songbooks will be distributed. When the clock tower strikes 6 p.m., Mrs. Claus will throw the giant light switch, and the downtown lights in trees, shop windows and buildings will illuminate all at once. The mayor and other city officials will speak, followed by candlelight caroling with musical accompaniment. Free cookies and hot chocolate will conclude the evening’s festivities. The lighting ceremony is sponsored by the Paso Robles Main Street Association Merchants, RABOBANK, Yanagi Sushi & Grill, and Vic’s Cafe. For more information, contact the Main Street office at (805) 2384103.

PASO ROBLES WINE COUNTRY THIS WEEK

Highway 46 West Wineries Friday Night Wine and Cheese The Highway 46 West Wineries Group is gearing up for the Holiday Friday, December 12, Night Wine and Cheese Evening. The group of 15 wineries will gather at Eagle Castle Winery Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. The Uncommonne Carolers, one of the premier caroling quartets on the Central Coast, will be Caroling during the evening. The admission for the event is $15 per person or $25 a couple, tickets will be sold at the door. All 15 wineries will be offering award-winning wines. A mixed case of superb Westside wines will be raffled off at the end of the evening. The Wine Wrangler will be taking reservations for transportation to and from the event.

About Highway 46 West Wineries Group In 2004, thirteen wineries on Highway 46 West formed the Highway 46 West Wineries Group. This group was formed to promote the tasting rooms of the beautiful Westside and to make people aware of the uniqueness of 46 West and the wines produced there. Paso Robles Wine Country is as unique and inviting as the people who have dedicated themselves to nurturing the vineyards and crafting fine wines. Visitors to Highway 46 West find the road less traveled is often marked by the thrill of discovery in this uncongested region. It’s an area where hospitality is first among a long list of qualities…where being friends and neighbors is as important as producing stellar wines. Highway 46 West is one thread that weaves among the vineyards and

wineries connecting longtime estates with exciting new producers. Rolling hills, majestic oaks and lush vineyards await the wine lover at every turn. The tasting rooms of Highway 46 West invite you to enjoy the neighborhood, relax under the spell of the friendly environment and savor life while sipping spectacular wines. The participating wineries consist of Brian Benson Cellars, Castoro Cellars, Dark Star Cellars, Doce Robles, Donati Family Vineyards, Eagle Castle, Fratelli Perata, Grey Wolf, Hunt Cellars, JanKris Winery, Midnight Cellars, Peachy Canyon, Rocky Creek Cellars, Rotta Winery and Windward Vineyard and are all included on the 46 West Passport. The passport is your map to the Westside, including descriptions and hours for each winery. Just like a travel passport you will get a unique stamp from each winery. Once you get eight stamps you will receive a beautifully designed poster of all the participating wineries labels. When your passport is full with all 15 stamps, your gift is another poster signed by all of the winemakers and entry into a quarterly drawing for prizes from a weekend stay at one of the group’s hotel sponsors to a guided tasting tour. Throughout the year the group puts on other events such as Tax Revolt Weekend and West Fest. West Fest is the big event of the year. All 15 wineries come together to pour great wines while guests listen to blues music and enjoy delicious food from local caterers. For more information, check out the 46 West Wineries website at www.paso46westwineries.com

FALCON NEST VINEYARD & WINERY

No worries about the weak dollar if you want to travel to France or Italy and do some wine tasting this year. You can have all of the ambience of a Mediterranean villa in Paso Robles at Villa Valdemosa, a 10-acre estate with a luxurious bed and breakfast inn – just 10 minutes east of downtown Paso, and yet a world away. Vineyards are under development on the property for a boutique winery planned for construction next year. Perched on a hilltop, the inn offers “forever” views of surrounding vineyards, olive groves and lavender. A range of well-appointed suites — called “Bordeaux,” “Petite Syrah” and “Syrah” – are available at prices that undercut the rates of area hotels that have much less to offer. Owner Tom Roebuck is himself a winemaker and you might even talk him into serving up his private reserves, such as the 2003 Mystral, a gold-medal-winning red blend. While you won’t see a television screen in the 5,000-square-foot villa, you will be soothed by the strains of Mozart from an extensive stereo network. You might even be treated to some live grand piano or guitar music, courtesy of local musicians who occasionally drop by. Near-term plans include hosting house concerts, and cinema and wine under the stars. In the mornings, guests who stay in the 400-square-foot Bordeaux suite, which offers a soaking tub and a walk-in waterfall shower, may step into the loggia, where a real fireplace takes the chill off the morning air. There, they may join other early risers for gourmet coffee, teas and fresh pastries, muffins or scones to tide them over till breakfast is served at 9:30, typically a soufflé or perhaps individual mushroom omelets and apple chicken sausage prepared by Tom, a seasoned European traveler who has lived in France. To make reservations, call (805) 237-237 or (408) 202-1146 or visit the Villa Valdemosa website at www.valedemosa.net. The B&B inn is located at 2552 Old Grove Lane, off Creston Road about six miles east of downtown Paso Robles. Pets are welcome.

Family owned and operated vineyard and winery specializing in handcrafted wines with intense colors and flavors. Join us in celebrating in the true Italian tradition with food and wine pairing, salami, prosciutto, provolone, sopres-sata, pâté, imported pasta, specialty items and the finest pasta sauces. There is a new resident at Old Edna, the 100-year-old historic cluster at the heart of San Luis Obispo Wine Country. Zoey Schrage and Nancy Elmore have brought their exquisite taste and eye for the extraordinary to their newest venture, Zoey’s at Old Edna & Antiques from Memory Lane. The store, housed in the historic tin-sided building facing Highway 227, is far more than antiques, with a complementary collection of unique contemporary and retro items, it is the perfect stop to complete your holiday shopping list. Zoey’s offers the expected: antique furniture that runs the gamut from Victorian to Shabby Chic; bejeweled broaches, both new and old; rare and collectible pottery and Bakelite pieces as well as the unexpected: handmade soaps infused with local olive oils, retro aprons and tea towels, fun and funky reading glasses and artisan products for around the house. And for wine lovers, there’s wine soap, wine bubble bath and more. “We try to have a little of everything – the antiques, the retro stuff and the funky stuff,” explains Zoey. “You can’t walk through without seeing something that grabs you or reminds you of some piece of your life – a person, a moment – and that’s what makes it so much fun.” Between now and the holidays, Zoey’s at Old Edna & Antiques from Memory Lane invites shoppers to explore their truly unique gift collection. November 29 they are hosting a Holiday Open House to celebrate the 100-year anniversary of the Old Edna Township with

Kicking off PCPA’s 45th Anniversary Season is the enduring and endearing holiday family favorite, Irving Berlin’s White Christmas. This new stage adaptation is based on the celebrated movie and tells the story of two show biz buddies, World War II Army vets, putting on a show in a picturesque Vermont inn, and finding their perfect mates in the bargain. The marvelous Irving Berlin scores includes “Count Your Blessings,” “Sisters” and the classic title song, “White Christmas,” the best selling recording of all time. Featured in PCPA’s cast is Colum Parke Morgan (Godspell, The Imaginary Invalid) playing Bob Wallace, the role originated by Bing Crosby. His buddy, Phil Davis played by Danny Kaye in the Paramount Pictures film, will be played by Michael Jenkinson (Ragtime, Hot Mikado). On the silver screen Rosemary Clooney played Betty Haynes; in PCPA’s production, that role will be handled by Elizabeth Stuart (Ragtime, The Weir), while her sister, Judy, will be played by guest artist Natasha Harris (Ragtime, Hot Mikado). Rounding out the cast will be resident artists Peter S. Hadres as General Waverly, Vanessa Ballam as Rita, Andrew Philpot as Ezekiel Foster and Corey Jones as Ralph Sheldrake. And returning to the PCPA stage as guest artist in the role of Martha, the inn’s proprietress, is Kitty Balay Genge. For this special family holiday presentation, PCPA is pleased to announce the extended offer of free tickets for military and their family, made possible by the generosity of the families of Drs. Daniel and Ronald Ng. This offer is made to active duty military, their spouses and dependents. They may attend any PCPA performance of Irving Berlin’s White Christmas for free, subject to existing funds in this special account and ticket availability. Contact the box office for details, (805) 922-8313. Also slated for the 2008-2009 season, A Midsummer Night’s

D’ALFONSO-CURRAN WINES by Mark Storer

I

f wine is art then Kris Curran and Bruno D’Alfonso are artists; and they’re not just run-of-the-mill artists, either: both are passionate about wine and winemaking. Natalie Lawrence, the manager of the D’Alfonso-Curran Tasting Room (formerly TRIO), tells a story about a dinner she had with them about ten years ago. “My daughter was 11; Bruno and Kris spent the entire evening explaining wine. They talked about how to remove the cork, why you smell it, how to swirl the glass and why you want to, what to smell for, and the fact that, when you swirled the wine around in your mouth, it opened up new levels of aroma and taste. To this day, my 21-year-old daughter is the biggest wine snob I know,” she laughs. She shared this story to illustrate the passion that Curran and D’Alfonso have for wine, for learning, for excellence, even in the most mundane of settings. There’s so much more to their story, of course. Kris Curran, who met Bruno, and started to work for him at Sanford full-time while attending SBCC, began her career at Cambria after graduating from Fresno State. She then moved on to Koehler, put SeaSmoke

on the map with her award-winning Pinot Noir and is now the Director of Winemaking for Foley, all while bottling under her own label since 1997 with her first ever Pinot Noir. Bruno D’Alfonso was the first formally educated winemaker in the Santa Rita Hills, and began his career with Sanford Winery. “He brought a whole new style to the art of making wine,” said Natalie, “because he brought science to the art of winemaking.” His labels are augmented by his Italian varietal Di Bruno wines, as well as his Badge Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, both of which are made of fruit from the Santa Rita Hills. Passionate about everything they do, the pair remains committed to delivering quality www.winecountrythisweek.com

wines in a relaxed, comfortable setting. The D’Alfonso-Curran Wines Tasting Room in Solvang is patterned after that. Light and airy with a lot of open space and a simple bar that looks out on the downtown Solvang scene, the tasting room has one thing on its mind – the duo’s wines. Natalie commented that while interviewing Bruno for the winery’s newsletter, he said, ‘I fight for the intellectualism of wine.’ Translated, that simply means that D’Alfonso and Curran remove the mystique of winemaking, honoring the science that blends with art, like any true alchemist. From Curran’s Spanish-influenced Grenache Blanc and Tempranillo to D’Alfonso’s Italian flourishes of Pinot Grigio and Sangiovese, these wines are tinged by the Old World craftsmanship and come from fruit grown in the Santa Ynez Valley AVA and the Santa Rita Hills AVA. Passion and art, intellectualism and family, growing and challenging: That’s the recipe for great wine on the Central Coast under the auspices of D’Alfonso-Curran Wines’ Tasting Room. Visit the tasting room at 1557 Mission Drive in Solvang from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., daily. For more information, call (805) 688-3494 or visit www.dalfonsocurranwines.com.

Boat Parade, Snow, Santa & Fireworks Featured at 23rd Santa Barbara Parade of Lights Celebrate the 23nd anniversary of the Santa Barbara Parade of Lights on Sunday, December 7th at the Santa Barbara Waterfront. Save the date as nearly 35 boats dress up in colored lights and parade around the Harbor. Bring your camera for a photo with Santa and friends at Santa’s Village from 3 to 6 p.m. Santa arrives at 3 p.m. escorted by Harbor Patrol and his elves. Santa’s Village has become a cherished holiday activity for children of all ages. Located on the City Pier in the Harbor (below Brophy’s), Santa’s Village will feature 12 tons of snow from the North Pole, holiday carolers and special treats from Santa Barbara Maritime Museum. Come early to cheer on your favorite boats as they prepare for the Boat Parade beginning at 5:30 p.m. This year’s boat parade theme is “23 Skidoo.” This American slang phrase became popular during the Roaring Twenties. Best viewing locations include Stearns Wharf and the Breakwater in the Harbor. Bring warm coats. For more information, call (805) 897-1962 or visit the City’s website at www.SantaBarbaraCA.gov. Fireworks immediately following the Boat Parade. The 2008 Santa Barbara Annual Parade of Lights activities take place December 7 from 3 to 7:30 p.m. at the harbor and Stearns Wharf. Admission is free. For more information, call (805) 897-1962.

Come learn and practice the art of wine blending at Cantara Cellars on Saturday, December 6 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mike Brown, winemaker and owner of Cantara Cellars, will lead a class on wine blending. Lunch and a custom bottle of wine that you blend are included. Class fee is $60 per person. The class is limited to 18 people. Cantara Cellars began as a small winemaking hobby in the garage of Mike and Chris Brown’s Moorpark home. Beginning with 250 pounds of Chardonnay hand harvested from Mike’s parents’ vineyards in Lodi, California, they fermented their first 18 gallons of wine. Over the next four years they carefully selected

TIPSY WOOD WINERY

Favorite Past times: Hanging out with Winemaker Craig, she is obsessed with him. Can Be Found … at the winery, or by Craig's side, eating grapes or rolling in the sun. Have anything to say for yourself? I am the princess of the house. I sneak onto the furniture while my owners are away. I love to cuddle and I snore a lot...sorry.
