BIANCHI WINERY Stand Alone Wines Steeped in Tradition by Mark Storer 1972 must have seemed a heady time in the California wine industry. Joseph Bianchi set up shop in the Central Valley and began producing bulk wine. Bianchi was actually something of a revolutionary back then getting involved in the “wine in a box” industry as well as the canned wine industry. Haven’t heard of canned wine? Don’t worry, you will. It’s being rumored to make something of a comeback. In 1992, Joseph’s son Glenn took over the Central Valley operations but he grew restless. He wanted to bump up the quality of the wine and make some profound changes. Indeed, the younger Bianchi revamped the eight different ranches and continued in the bulk wine business. But by 2000, he knew it was time to move west and that is precisely what he did. Setting up shop in 2000 in Paso Robles, the Bianchi’s purchased 40 acres of land and began a correspondent search for quality grapes. 30 of the acres Bianchi purchased were taken out and replanted with superior vines of Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon and

Merlot. Bianchi Winery began to produce quality grapes and quality wine. The first harvest and crush in Paso Robles was in 2004 and by 2005, winemaker Tom Lane joined the team and Bianchi was well on the way to a whole new life. “I’d been involved in the U.C. Davis graduate program,” says Lane “and worked for seven years at Navarro Vineyards [in the Anderson Valley] as well as ten years at Concannon before I came here.” Lane is from Livermore originally where Concannon is based. As part of Concannon’s winemaking team, Lane purchased Paso Robles grapes and knew their worth. “My wife and I love it here. It’s really a great place to make wine,” he says. Bianchi’s Paso Robles operation is the only winery on Branch Road off of Highway 46 East. It stands alone in many other ways, too. Producing a little less than 15,000 cases of wine a year, Lane says his largest bottling is only 1400 cases. “We’re into a lot of varietals and we kind of take our time with each one,” he says. There are now 28 estate acres of vineyard from which Lane gathers the fruit and he travels up and down the state www.winecountrythisweek.com

looking for quality sources. “I get Sauvignon Blanc out of Lockwood because I really like how it doesn’t have that over-powering grassiness to it. We get Chardonnay out of the Edna Valley and Santa Maria and Pinot Noir out of Santa Maria as well,” he adds. There’s Pinot Grigio from the Arroyo Grande area and some Italian varietals as well from the Paso area. But the attention to detail in each varietal has paid off. The 2005 Zinfandel from Paso Robles won the gold medal from Jerry Mead’s New World Wine Competition and took third place honors in the 2008 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition. In the Pinot Noir Shootout featuring some 300 Pinot Noirs, Bianchi took third place with their Pinot that retails for between $25 and $30 a bottle. Impressive standings from a truly stand alone winery. That quality can be attributed to Lane’s dedication to his craft. “Everything is a blend to me,” says Lane speaking of his winemaking style. “Whether or not it’s a single varietal, it’s still a blend. I might be making Cabernet Sauvignon, but I’ll use fruit from our Estate Clone eight while my

WINE COUNTRY THIS WEEK WINE COUNTRY NEWS neighbor grows Clone 337 and I’ll put the two together.” Lane also argues that the type of barrel used, the type of yeast, the various techniques depending on what is called for make all of his wines “blends.” Still, Lane does blend fruit and has come up with some wonderful successes most of which can only be purchased at the Paso Robles tasting room. “We make a traditional Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot that I really like,” he says. It’s called Trevino. Lane also experimented successfully with a blend of Pinot Noir and Syrah that he calls “Syranot” and it too is quite popular. Bianchi’s main focus has been on the tasting room and on restaurants but bottle shops are carrying the wines more and more. The quality of the fruit combined with Tom Lane’s attention to each varietal and each detail has made the Bianchi name stand out in a crowded field. “I don’t actually drink wine every night,” Lane says. “But we certainly do enjoy it when we do.” The Lane’s have three children, two daughters who are off pursuing college and careers and a son in high school as well. Lane’s own advice about enjoying wine could be the motto for Bianchi itself. “The best glass of wine is the one that’s enjoyed with family and friends and you’re not focusing so much on the wine, but on life.” Indeed, quality comes from making something that enhances your customers’ lives. ozo Valley Winery is not in Pozo Valley, which might arguably be a good thing. The town of Pozo, is 18 miles southeast of Santa Margarita, whereas the Pozo Valley tasting room is actually a mile and a half off Highway 101 in Santa Margarita, between Paso Robles and San Luis Obispo. The Arnold family has farmed in Pozo Valley since 1919. The original Arnolds left Nebraska to settle in Pozo and start a cattle operation. A dozen years ago, Steve Arnold decided he needed to raise additional crops to bring in more cash. He hadn’t planned on planting grapes, but Don Tally of Talley Vineyards suggested the idea. The thought was to plant a 32-acre vineyard and sell the fruit. And who better to begin buying that fruit than the Robert Mondavi Winery in the Napa Valley. When the contract with Mondavi expired in 2007, the question became, what to do with the fruit? Brother and sister Joey and Michelle Arnold suggested to their parents, Steve and Debbie, they start making wine, an idea that wasn’t enthusiastically received at first. “They wanted proof we could do it,” Michelle said.

Since Joey and Michelle were both fruit science graduates from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, they felt they possessed the ability to create their own wine. Joey made a small batch of wine and for a first effort, everyone was impressed. Today, Pozo Valley Winery offers complimentary tastings at their tasting room on Fridays, Saturday and Sundays. They share the space with Bonnie Bardin of Bonnie’s Kitchen, a classmate of Michelle’s who offers www.winecountrythisweek.com

catering services as well as sandwiches to go at the small tasting room. Old photos adorn the walls, pictures of the Arnold family’s legacy and the general store once run by the first Arnolds that used to be a few doors down the street. The tasting room for Pozo Valley Vineyards is rustic, more cowboy feel than the expensive architecture of Napa Valley. An old wooden wine press sits in the corner; a reminder of earlier days. Currently, Pozo Valley offers only one white, a Viognier they grow on their 32-acre vineyard. Michelle explains that the temperatures at their remote vineyard are similar to Paso Robles. “We get into the upper 90s and it will drop down to the 50s at night,” she said. That helps to regulate the sugars and the acid levels of the fruit. They also make a Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel and a late-harvest Zinfandel. Pozo Valley Vineyards are located at 2200 El Camino Real, in the heart of Santa Margarita. Tickets Now Available for Annual Winemakers’ Cookoff The Paso Robles Rotary Club kicked off ticket sales for its 10th Annual Winemakers’ Invitational Cookoff fund raiser on August 9. Last year Paso Robles Rotary Club used proceeds from Winemakers’ Cookoff to provide $30,000 in college scholarships to local high school seniors through its Harlow Ford Scholarship Foundation. Several enhancements have been added to this year’s edition of the Winemakers’ Cookoff to make ticket sales and event information more accessible to the public. This year, the Rotary is making Winemakers’ Cookoff tickets available on the Internet via a dedicated website and on-line ticket consolidator, brownpapertickets.com. A toll-free number for information and ticket orders has been added. In addition, tickets and information will be on hand at a number of local community events leading up to the Cookoff. “In this tenth year of our event, we have focused on reaching as many potential attendees as possible, making their ability to

SANTA MARIA WINE COUNTRY The Hidden Jewel of Santa Barbara County Over the years the landscape of the Santa Maria Valley has steadily evolved and, unbeknownst to many, offers one of the most unique Wine Country experiences on the Central Coast. While traveling Highway 101 into Santa Maria, a glance to the west offers views of a growing city that takes pride in its historic roots. A view to the east offers a variety of agricultural landscapes with a vineyard here and there, steadily increasing until you realize it: you are in Wine Country, Santa Maria Valley Wine Country. The region encompasses more than 50 wineries, with an ideal setting for Rhône and Burgundian varietals. Proximity to the coast, an average temperature around 64 degrees, surrounding mountain ranges and cool winds out of the northwest come together where the Santa Maria River winds through a myriad of elevated plateaus. Santa Maria Valley is the only region on the west coasts of North and South America where two transverse mountain ranges are located, creating a unique funnel effect, pushing breezes into the valley. In fact, this one of a kind landscape makes Santa Maria home to one of the most constant tempera-

tures of any city in California. And the wines – Kenneth Volk, Cambria, Costa de Oro and Addamo Estate Vineyards are just a few of the tasting rooms in the valley (for a complete listing of Santa Maria tasting rooms, see the back section of this magazine) as well as a host of other wineries such as Au Bon Climat, Qupé and Alta Maria who call Santa Maria their home but do not operate tasting rooms. Volk, perhaps best known as the founder of Wild Horse Winery in the Paso Robles AVA, has worked with fruit from throughout the Central Coast, earning a reputation for crafting world-class wines, particularly Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, and he is proud to call Santa Maria Valley his enological home. This esteemed coastal appellation has grown steadily, albeit slowly over the years. The pace of growth is intentional; the winegrowing community of Santa Maria Valley is protective of its history, character and potential. Though some are larger in scope than others, all of the valley’s tasting rooms offer an intimate atmosphere for enjoying the fruits of their labor. t’s another beautiful day in Paso Robles, and the grapes in the three Vina Robles vineyards are soaking up the sun. But look for yourself without ever leaving home, because Vina Robles, one of the most wired wineries anywhere, sports three solarpowered web cams sited in their manicured vineyards and blue-oak forest. Wondering what the weather is like at the new Vina Robles visitors center? Or how those Petite Sirah vines are coming along? Vina Robles is not your grandfather’s winery in other ways, too. Along with the superb wines, you can enjoy unique activities such as ballroom dance lessons, take a dog behavior seminar or relax to cool jazz tones during the summer concert series. These events take place in and around the new 14,000-square-foot tasting room, a visual delight with its classic California mission style accented by modern European touches. Soaring interiors, stunning views and a courtyard fountain create the perfect ambiance for a relaxing wine tasting. While you’re in the tasting room, located

at 3700 Mill Road – only three miles east of downtown Paso Robles – you can indulge in complimentary estate-wine tasting, reserve tasting or even reserve tasting paired with artisan cheeses. In fact, the on-site deli carries a line of gourmet foods – from coffee and spices to sauces and meats. If that isn’t enough, future plans call for a full-service inn to accommodate guests from around the world who come to visit the fastest-growing wine region in California. The European flavor of the Vina Robles wines and hospitality comes naturally to the winery staff. Owner Hans Nef and winemaker Matthias Gubler are both Swiss. Nef, a restaurateur and developer, engaged in a worldwide search for the ideal location to grow Bordeaux and Rhône varieties, eventually selecting Paso Robles. Old world influences can be seen in the restraint of the Vina Robles winemaking, too. Yields are kept deliberately low to concentrate flavor, and grapes are hand harvested and sorted, according to Gubler. After gentle crushing to retain the Vina Robles hallmark “fresh fruit” quality, grapes are fermented in temperature-controlled tanks. A gentle “pump-over” is used to avoid harsh tannins while extracting optimum flavor and color. French and American oak is used for the www.winecountrythisweek.com

barrels, where malolactic fermentation adds creaminess. But Gubler uses the wood judiciously to prevent the over-oaking that has plagued so many California wines. Current releases include their 2007 Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier, along with a Rosé that has received critical acclaim for its intense off-dry berry flavors and persistent finish. In fact, Dan Berger rated it “exceptional” in the May 3, 2007, issue of Vintage Experiences, calling it “a Rosé that competes with the best I have had in the last few years!” If you are in the mood for a bolder wine, try the ’04 Cabernet Sauvignon, a gold-medal winner at the 2008 Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo International Wine Competition. This full-bodied Cab offers intense fruitiness balanced with light oak and a medium-long finish. It was also selected to grace the wine list at one of the top jazz clubs in the country, Blue Note, a cultural institution in Greenwich Village. Other current offerings include several red blends, such as the ’06 RED4, ’05 Suendero, a meritage, and the 2005 Syrée, a spicy red with aromas of dark fruit with bitter sweet chocolate, vanilla and a hint of cedar. Sometimes a place just fits. You know it by looking at it, you know as soon as walk up the path and in the door that this is a spot that simply belongs right where it is, doing exactly what it is doing. That, in a word or two, would describe the Cambria restaurant known fondly – and to many – as Robin’s Restaurant. Located in a charming and nicely weathered old home in this historic seaside town, they offer an eclectic menu that has pleased locals and visitors since they opened their doors in 1985. The interior (with its fireplace) and the spacious, multi-leveled heated deck surrounded by flowers and vines are a bit eclectic as well, and it all blends together to match the setting, just as owner Shanny Covey intended it to be: warm, informal, comfortable and unique. And it should be noted that those gardens are the perfect setting for a small reception. So how to define “eclectic” when it comes to menus? Well, how about “Thursday Night Sushi Night.” Or lobster enchiladas, Tandoori chicken, salmon bisque, Vietnamese lumpia, Malaysian green curry, pork osso buco and a juicy Angus beef burger with white cheddar and grilled sweet onions. All on the same menu. Then there’s the monthly Prix Fixe Dinners on the second Friday of each month that feature different flavors from around the world. If that is not what eclectic means, then we are looking at different dictionaries. But, it all somehow works, and wonderfully so. Then there is the extensive wine list, which while pretty straightforward also has more than a few surprises. All of which makes a visit to this charming part of the coast an even more enjoyable journey. DOWNTOWN PASO ROBLES WINE COUNTRY THIS WEEK

Enjoy Hearthstone Wines at the Downtown Tasting Room by Leah Kolt Hoy Buell learned the wine business from the ground up, literally. About a decade ago, the owner of Greenheart Farms in Arroyo Grande, a successful nursery on California’s Central Coast, added grafted grapevine plants to the vegetable, reclamation and flower plants he sold. His thumb soon turned from green to purple and it wasn’t long before he was planting 40 acres of vines in the historic Adelaida area, just west of Paso Robles. At 1,400 feet in the rolling hills near the cooling influence of the Templeton Gap, the vineyard offered the perfect spot for the varieties Buell selected – both red and white Rhônes, Zinfandel, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvigonon, Pinot Noir and even Sangiovese and Brunello. “It’s a true boutique vineyard. I basically planted whatever I wanted to play around with and some day make into great wine,” he said. With minimal assistance from Buell, nature produced low yields of small, thick-skinned grapes, which created wine with strong concentrations of fruit flavor and color, as well as balanced, silky acidity and elegance. Although Buell pretty much lets nature have its way in the vineyard, he is protective of his vines when it comes to his fellow man –

and their vehicles. “I won’t let anybody drive anything into the vineyard,” he said. “I don’t want to take a chance on any infestations from other outside crops and soil.” For the first vintage in 2003, Buell continued the minimalist approach. “I used no oak that first year,” he explained. “I just wanted to experience the pure flavor and aroma of each variety’s grapes before doing anything else to them.” In 2007, partner Paul Ayers brought his 18 years of winemaking experience to the Hearthstone team. And this year Hearthstone earned a gold medal at the 2008 San Francisco Chronicle wine competition for its 2004 Fireside Claret – a meritage blend that is 57% Cabernet Franc, 38% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Merlot. It sells for $27, or $21.60 for wine club members. You can sample this award-winning wine, along with the popular ’06 Pearl Viognier-Roussanne blend, at the tasting room facilities Hearthstone now shares with their colleagues at Midlife Crisis Winery in Paso Robles – located at 1214 Pine Street. Enjoy the Fabulous Wines, Views of B & E Vineyards Just a few years ago women winemakers were a novelty. Only a handful of persistent and talented females were able to push their way to the top in a very competitive field. More and more though, women are not only at the helm of some very prestigious wine operations, they are also garnering their share of accolades and awards. Patricia Bello of B&E Vineyards is a perfect example of the creative spirit that epitomized the women of the vine. Patricia Bello Patricia did not come to her calling in the usual fashion. She and her husband, Jerry began by planting grapes and selling them to local vintners. Patricia, a cutting horse trainer and breeder left the farming duties to Jerry. The vineyards provided her with a marvelous view from her hilltop home and she came to love their brilliant displays in the fall and spring, but winemaking was not something she even considered. Along the way though, she developed an expensive habit. “I love a good bottle of wine but unfortunately I seem to particularly like the ones that cost a hundred dollars or more. That’s why I had to start making my own! My goal was to produce a really great wine that was also affordable.” With the assistance of other local winemakers, Patricia honed her craft and became a truly exceptional winemaker, overseeing the production of nearly 4000 cases of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and a red blend called Red Rhythm. Her insistence on a twenty month aging in French oak barrels produces a rich, velvety wine that has helped her meet her goal of a creating fine wines that will fit into

almost anyone’s budget. This year her 2004 Cabernet took the gold at the Paso Robles County Fair and her Syrah and Red Rhythm both won gold medals at the San Francisco Chronicle’s Wine Competition. B&E Vineyards is located on Creston Road in Paso Robles. A drive out to their tasting room will not only provide one with the opportunity to enjoy fabulous wines, but a chance to take in the awe-inspiring view of rolling vineyards that Patricia so loves. On the top of the highest hill on the property, the Bello’s have built a charming western style saloon in which visitors can relax, sip three different reds (a Rosé is in the works) and be entertained by the warmth and wit of the winemaker herself. B&E Vineyards is open Friday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on weekdays by appointment.

The Wine & Golf Symposium was created in 2002 as a vehicle to raise money for the Cal Poly Wine and Viticulture Program, through scholarships and

funding for the on-campus vineyard. The annual event, which raised $12,000 last year for the program, will take place on Friday, June 13 as an invitational event for its sponsors. The Wine and Viticulture Degree Program, which started in 2004, has been entirely reliant on private and industry funding for the 15 acre on-campus vineyard. The Wine & Golf Symposium is a once a year non-profit event that seeks sponsors, mainly from the local wine industry, to fundraise for the program. The golf tournament is being held at The Links at Vista Del Hombre golf course in the heart of Paso Robles Wine Country. There is also a banquet following the event which will be hosted by Silver Horse Winery. The event is an invitational with a $500 minimum sponsorship to have a player in the golf tournament.
