The 2008 Paso Robles Wine Festival Kicks It Up a Notch New Epicurean Enhancements Target Culinary Tourists at 26th Annual Festival Wine enthusiasts, foodies and culinary travelers from far and wide celebrated when the Paso Robles Wine Country Alliance announced the new epicurean enhancements to their favorite celebration of wine and food – the Paso Robles Wine Festival. On Saturday, May 17, the local culinary community converges on the Downtown City Park for the 2008 Paso Robles Wine Festival offering attendees a tasty experience. The Invention of Premium by Mark Storer

W

ith a name that has become synonymous for the Paso Robles AVA, a focus on handcrafted estate wines and a family-run business, Robert Hall Winery is about to approach a milestone in their history. “We will be at 100,000 case production this year,” says Kim Murphy-Rodrigues, Robert Hall’s Marketing Director. The focus, however, has never left the vineyard. “The wine is made in the vineyard,” says Robert Hall winemaker Don Brady. “My job is not to screw it up.” Brady’s fame is for his wine blends and he hit the jackpot, so to speak, with the Robert Hall Rhône powerhouse called Rhone de Robles. The blend of Paso Robles Rhône varietals has garnered attention all over the media including a writeup in Everyday with Rachel Ray magazine. But that’s not Brady’s only strength. Robert Hall’s Cabernet Sauvignon won a gold medal from the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition and the Meritage Bordeaux blend won a gold medal from the West Coast Wine Competition and scored a 90 from The Wine News. It’s not all about awards and accolades, though. “Each of our varietals was individually selected in concert with the terroir found on our ranch. We truly believe it all starts in the

vineyard,” says Murphy-Rodrigues. In that way, Brady can concentrate on each individual harvest as if it were a small boutique wine. That’s why, according to Murphy-Rodrigues, “…we also specialize in smaller lots, such as our Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, and our new releases of Cabernet Franc and Petite Sirah which are tasting room exclusives.” Robert Hall, Sr. first fell in love with the winery lifestyle on a family vacation to the Rhône Valley of France in the 1970s. A native of Minnesota, Hall was captivated by pairing wine and food and the process of grape growing and winemaking. When he returned to the states, he ventured off west looking for the perfect terroir where he could grow the great Rhône fruit he experienced in France. Already something of a business giant with experience in construction, horse-breeding, travel agencies and restaurants, among other things, Hall knew that his dedication to quality would be the key to success. “Our goal is to provide an exceptional tasting experience with an ideal price point,” says Murphy-Rodrigues. “We believe our price point is ideal, with consistent quality from vintage to vintage.” If the consumer is any record of it, then Robert Hall’s success is indeed incredible. for his brand. And the family business is in pretty good hands with grandson Robert Hall the III as Global Brand Manager and is in charge of the sales division for the winery. He spends a lot of time on the road with his grandfather extolling the virtues of these exceptional wines. As a hallmark of their winemaking experience, the Robert Hall Winery has implemented sustainable growing practices as well including a deficit water irrigation program that helps conserve California’s most precious resource. Committed to showcasing the Paso Robles AVA in all of its wines, Robert Hall has made an effort to care for and keep fertile the vineyards that it owns and from which it purchases grapes. The Robert Hall Estate vineyards comprise about 285 acres of grapes with reduced yields all over the Paso Robles AVA. Since the vineyards are not all in the same place, winemaker Don Brady gets to express various microclimates throughout his choices of blends. “Don has a talent for blending wines,” says Murphy-Rodrigues. Indeed, she says Brady’s talent is the secret to success of their famed Rhone de Robles and their newest blend called Pape de Robles, a blend of traditional grapes found in Chateau Neuf de Pape wines from the Rhône Valley. Since the explosion of wineries in Paso

Robles has led to more and more tasting rooms, Hall knew he needed his to stand out. Considered a “destination winery,” Robert Hall Sr.’s longtime companion Margaret Burrell, a talented artist with an eye for décor, is responsible for the welcoming atmosphere of the tasting room. Handmade sconces that adorn the walls and a faux distressed granite wall painting in the wine cavern are all part of her contributions to the tasting room. Along with fellow artist, Steve Kalar, the two also provided the impetus behind the stained concrete floors and painted fountain in the tasting room. Speaking of the cavern, it may be the other secret weapon of the winery. Over 19,000 square feet stretches out underneath the winery itself and houses the barrel room where the wines are kept. Tours are available daily, of course, and the artwork by both Burrell and Kalar create an inviting and warm atmosphere in a place where warmth isn’t really the point. The caverns’ main task is to keep the wine at a consistent temperature just right for fermenting in its premium oak barrels. Robert Hall Winery is located off of Highway 46 East in Paso Robles. T

he words wine and Bakersfield aren’t usually used in the same sentence unless it’s a trick question. But Bakersfield is where winemaker Joey Tensley of Carina Cellars grew up. As the force behind the powerhouse that Carina Cellars has become in a few short years, it’s clear that his rural upbringing in the Central Valley gave him a strong foundation. He first learned about wine at age 12, while playing at a soccer tournament in Bordeaux. He and his young teammates got to tour a winery. Joey was immediately enthralled and knew what he wanted to do with the rest of his life. “Which pretty much made me the only kid growing up in Bakersfield with that particular dream,” he says off-handedly. Los Olivos, where Carina Cellars is located, has a rural, agricultural charm, but this wine region is nothing like Bakersfield. The interior of the tasting room is loose and warm, with wood wine racks lining the walls, stained concrete floors and two generous wood tasting bars which can house large

parties or, conversely, be intimate enough for just a few people. Local artwork adorns the walls which is rotated every two months and focuses on artists closely connected to the area. “Local people tend to buy local art,” says tasting room manager Carolyn Turner. Her goal is to make certain that when anyone walks into Carina Cellars, they feel welcomed and right at home. The tasting room opened in August of 2004 and has been busy ever since. Part of that success is that winemaker Joey Tensley and owner David Hardee know their audience. The focus is on Syrah and Rhône-style wines. “Syrah is very hip,” Tensley says. “The cool thing about Syrah is that it adapts to www.winecountrythisweek.com

various growing conditions very well.” Tensley currently produces seven iterations of Syrah under his Tensley label, as well as Viognier, Mourvedre and Petite Sirah for Carina Cellars. Carina also produces a few Syrah blends like Clairvoyant, which is Syrah, Grenache and Mourvedre, and their flagship wine, Iconoclast, a unique blend of Syrah from Santa Barbara and Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa. Carina offers two distinct labels, the Blue Label (artwork by local artist Michael Carpenter) which is oriented toward the standard offerings of Syrah and Viognier. The Black Label is available in the tasting room only and offered for tastings on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays and comprises their high-end wines. And if one Carina Cellars tasting room isn’t enough for you, within a few months their second location will open in Paso Robles, focusing on estate wines from vineyards they have planted. Carina Cellars is open seven days a week, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and they are located at 2900 Grand Ave. (next to Paninos) in Los Olivos. The regular tasting menu is $10 which includes six wines and the reserve list is $15.

When you think about wine and wine culture there are generally two camps. In one corner there are connoisseurs who are considered in-the-know and their like counterparts, wineries that are steeped in legacy and tradition. In the other there are a multitude of people who enjoy wine, but their life doesn’t revolve around it, and winery upstarts, of which many in Paso Robles could be considered. The ironic thing is that these upstarts, or startups, often have a strikingly similar story at their root, a man falls in love with wine and ends up chucking it all like Gauguin to follow his dreams. In reality these Gauguins straddle both camps. They may not consider themselves connoisseurs but they did envision their life revolving around wine. At the same time, legacy and tradition are not a part of their stock so everything from the labels on the bottle, to the type of wines they make are in

many ways unbound. This in and of itself does not guarantee good or bad wines, but in our opinion it does capture a key high-level difference between old and new world wines. If you think about wine as the expression of a culture it also speaks to differences in ethos. Does this imply that winemakers must embrace a single philosophy of winemaking? Surely, there are valuable insights and techniques that can be leveraged from both schools of thought. Vihuela Winery came to fruition on just that principal, born out of a harmonious blend of art and science. We currently focus on Bordeaux style wines and plan on releasing our inaugural Spanish wine in late 2008. The area’s best Chefs compete with unique paella recipes, paired with wine from Paso Robles Pinot Noir producers. All proceeds benefit the Paso Robles Youth Arts Foundation. The 5th Annual Pinot and Paella Cook-off will feature delights of the Spanish beat, paella, live music and dance. 16 chefs compete in a friendly competition in several categories judged by local celebrities and attendees in the coveted “Peoples Choice Award.” 20 Pinot Noir producers from Paso Robles complement the Paella competition.

This year’s festival will include live music by Incendio, and a Salsa dance exposition will delight attendees and get them moving on the dance floor! MAMA’S MEATBALL by Charles Neave One pretty reliable way to find out just how good the food at a local restaurant is, is to ask somebody in the restaurant business. Ask a bartender, a waiter, anyone in fact, what they think of Mama’s meatballs in San Luis Obispo and their lips begin to quiver, their eyes roll towards the heavens, they sigh; that is how good Mama’s Meatball is. Set in a small courtyard off of one of the town’s main streets, in a place called the Old Creamery, Mama’s Meatball is actually divided in two. On the right is the take-out where people line up to get their orders of meatballs and more. To the left, fronted by a huge-trunked tree and a water fountain, is the intimate restaurant with it’s mural of the Mediterranean across the back. Meatballs aside, the restaurant, under owner and chef Nicola Allegretta, offers a wide range of authentic Italian dishes, many of them now available in smaller sizes as well, a bow to the economy and his customer’s wishes. Among them are half a dozen soups, a long list of salads (including grilled salmon and a refreshing pear and gorgonzola), some wonderful antipasto choices, both hot and cold paninis (including, of course, one made with meatballs), more pasta dishes than there is space here to share (though the Ravioli di Pollo all Vodka – homemade ravioli filled with chicken and served in a vodka sauce – cannot go unmentioned). There is also a heady selection of meat and fish dishes as well as any number of traditional and specialty pizzas (now available in two sizes) and some far too-tempting desserts. ANGLIM WINERY by Mark Storer nglim Winery is proof that the American Dream is thriving and doing well. Former South Bay business executives Steve and Steffanie Anglim chucked life in the fast lane to begin life in the SLO lane, San Luis Obispo County, that is. Relocating and buying a home in Paso Robles was just the ticket for the Anglim’s to begin their new life. Rather than buying a vineyard and farming the grapes, the Anglim’s concentrated on making great wine from the sources already available. “Sourcing gives me enormous flexibility,” says Steve Anglim. “I want to work with growers who are as passionate about growing grapes as I am about making wine.” Their wines have been delivering the goods, too, as they say. Award-winning Rhône varietals as well as a few others have put Anglim Winery permanently on the Paso Robles wine map. It is, of course, where they want to be. Steffanie Anglim still speaks about one of her first times in the city. “We happened to be in town the evening of the Tree Lighting,” says Steffanie, referring to the Christmas tree lighting in the same City Park where the Paso Robles Wine Festival is held each year. “I saw the City Park filled with families holding candles and singing carols, and I was hooked.” This year’s Wine Festival creates new

opportunities for tasting Anglim wines. “We’re releasing several new blends as well as our second vintage of Fiddlestix Vineyard Pinot Noir,” says Steffanie. The new Rhône white blend is called Cameo and it is 50% Marsanne, 25% Roussanne and 25% Viognier. “It’s got a lot of nice Asian pear and white peach flavors, but that Marsanne also gives it some nice minerality.” The Anglims have a full weekend planned for Wine Festival this year, including a dinner, tasting in the park, and festivities at the tasting room. “Our family comes to town every year from all over the country to help,” explains Steffanie. “We hope people will come and see us and taste what our family winery is all about.” www.winecountrythisweek.com

Since their first crush in 2002, the Anglims have been seeking out boutique growers in the area to create just the right assortment of varietals. With the 2005 vintage, the fruit harmonized, allowing Anglim to create their first Rhône red blend, called Best Barrel Blend, made up of 45% Mourvedre, 45% Syrah and 10% Grenache. “It’s got a really earthy character,” Steffanie says. “There’s a smokiness to it, too and then that splash of fruit and pepper from the Grenache.” Anglim also produces single-vineyard varietals, from the Pinot Noir to new releases of a 100% Viognier from Bien Nacido Vineyard, and their first Cabernet Franc from Paso Del Sol Vineyard in Templeton. “We continue to focus on quality, and on creating wines that are balanced and food-friendly.” Anglim’s tasting room is also a unique feature in the city of Paso Robles. Located at the historic train depot circa 1887, the Anglim’s have taken a place that used to be a destination for travelers and rekindled that excitement, this time with local wines instead of train tickets. “The space has a great feel to it – relaxing and interesting at the same time … plus our youngest daughter loves the train!” says Steve. As for cheese choices, it was largely brie or cheddar. Although the idea of pairing wine with cheese was on the right track, perhaps the timing was premature. In the 1970s the American wine drinker was not as sophisticated as he or she is now, not to mention lacking choices of quality California wines. But wine and cheeses have been paired together through the ages and today the magic of this marriage is renewed at Sylvester Vineyards & Winery. That’s just one of a long list of accolades to grace this Paso Robles institution, which was founded by Gary Eberle in 1979. Now considered by many as a pioneer of Paso Robles – the fastest growing wine region in the state – Eberle lives and breathes to promote Paso Robles and the wines that come from this land.

‘One of the Best Tours on the Central Coast!’ – WINE SPECTATOR “When I first came here in 1973 with my professors from UC Davis,” he says, “I was told that Paso Robles would be the next great wine region in California. Now, people ask if I’m surprised to see the boom in winemaking in the area. The truth is, I thought it would happen a long time ago. But I’m happy that winemakers today are proving

my professors right.” And while Eberle believes that consistent quality in winemaking is important, he feels his biggest job is to promote Paso Robles on a national and international basis. Only now, 35 years after first arriving to the area, does he feel the region is truly becoming recognized for its outstanding capacity for great grapes. “You know, people ask me all the time when I’m going to retire,” he jokes. “How can I retire when I haven’t worked a day in my life? This is what I love to do. It’s the only thing I’ve ever done. And I can tell you, I’m living my dream.” Gary has also helped several other local winemakers live their dreams by working under his tutelage at Eberle Winery. Toby Shumrick (Tobin James Winery), Mat Garretson (Garretson Wines), Robert Nadeau (Nadeau Family Vintners), Tom Meyers (Castoro Cellars), Dan Panico (Dover Canyon), Chuck Mulligan (Harmony Cellars) and Bill Sheffer (Halter Ranch) all made their first wines at Eberle Winery. In fact, many in the industry call the winery “Eberle University” for Gary’s hands-on

Paso Robles Kruse Week 2008 The City of Paso Robles has announced plans to launch a Memorial Day weekend event, Paso Robles Kruse Week 2008. The five-day automotive-themed Kruse Week will kick off on Friday, May 23, with a car auction to be held at River Oaks Hot Springs Spa. Cass Wines: An Orchestration of Elegance by Mark Storer

S

teve Cass is something of an orchestra leader. Taking disparate parts of a greater whole and meshing them together, he has created a unique winery in the heart of the Paso Robles region. Cass Wines is the brainchild of the man who spent 20 years with the Charles Schwab Company. “I was a wine drinker, not an aficionado. I was looking for the next thing to do,” he says with a wry sense of humor. The next thing to do turned out a little bigger than he expected. Retiring from Schwab in the Bay Area on his 20th anniversary with the company, Cass moved with his wife and two grown children here to Paso Robles in search of the next phase. Learning quickly that he was in Wine Country and being a wine drinker, he began preparing for the next career and purchased 150 acres of vineyard land eight miles east of the city of Paso Robles. “There were no other wineries back here at the time,” he says. “It was just us back then.” Back then was 1999 and Cass was the first to put together his winery in an area that now boasts around 16 such wineries. All of them have banded together to form the Back Roads Alliance of Paso Robles Wineries. Their first event was held on April 26th at The Loading Chute restaurant in Creston, not far from the wineries. “We had about 210 people there and it was all word of mouth from the wineries. There was no advertising – just selling tickets from the tasting rooms,” says Cass. But Cass’s tasting room is something very special indeed. “We figured there was no reason for people to come back here when we first started. We were the only ones here.” So Cass built not just a winery and tasting room, but a full kitchen with patio dining creating a Wine Country lunch bistro complete with a Culinary Institute of the Arts trained chef named Brandon McPartlin. “We hired him right off the plane from Florida,” says Cass. Actually, McPartlin, 28, had recently married and come to California to work as a Sous Chef for a catering company that Cass was using. “I hired him to be our Executive Chef and we put him right to work.” With a light and fresh lunch menu featuring such delectables as pulled pork Cuban sandwiches, Truffle Pizza and the best seller, McPartlin’s Crab Cakes, Cass Winery was able to not only show off his boutique Rhône varietals and blends, but pair them with high end foods. Cass Winery immediately became a destination spot in Paso Robles. “We focus on Rhônes and Rhône blends,” says Cass. “But I have 80 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon as well and we make a beautiful Cab.”

The Cass wines that have gained such notoriety are indeed the Rhônes, however, such as single varietals of Mourvedre, Syrah, Grenache, Viognier, Rousanne and Marsanne. Cass’s winemaker is not a local either. “I was in South Africa with my partner from the vineyard, here, Ted Plemons. We spent an entire day at Fairview Winery there,” he says. “We reasoned we could make great Rhône varietals using the techniques that the South Africans were using.” So, Cass got home and fired off an email to the University of Stellenbosh in South Africa and out of eight interviews, Lood Kotze, a 28-year-old winemaker from South Africa, was offered the job as assistant winemaker. “We had a consultant in Dan Kleck of Silverstone Wines, but he came to the winery at one point and told us he was firing himself. Lood was doing a great job and we didn’t need him anymore,” says Cass. “He still comes around though and gets to enjoy the wines like everyone else. Kotze is now the winemaker at Cass. With both his son, Bryan, and daughter, Kristin, helping out with the new family business, Cass has also hired ten other 20-somethings and is giving them their first taste in the wine industry. The result, of course, is great wine in a pastoral atmosphere with food prepared just for the wines themselves. Now that truly is an orchestration, the likes of which makes Carnegie Hall look like the local theater.

Costa de Oro – So Much More Than Just Great Wines Forty acres of strawberry fields, not vineyards, are what visitors see through the picture window of the Costa de Oro Winery’s tasting room. That’s no coincidence. The tasting room is part of the Gold Coast Marketplace, where an array of fresh produce and gourmet foods are available along with Costa de Oro’s award-winning wines. There’s even a drive-through window for purchasing strawberries. Gold Coast Marketplace is an attractive shop with exposed wooden beams and earth tones exuding warmth. A stone fruit’s throw from Highway 101 in Santa Maria, its easy accessibility attracts both travelers just passing through and wine enthusiasts launching a day of tasting along the Foxen Canyon wine trail. Gold Coast boasts fresh, locally grown produce and flowers typically only available at farmers’ markets. Artichokes from Lompoc, avocados from Santa Maria, roses from Nipomo. Just outside the market is the “produce patio,” where shoppers can

pick up anything from onions and garlic to lettuce and tomatoes. Sure, the shopping’s great, but Costa de Oro’s wines are reason enough to visit. Costa de Oro – Spanish for Gold Coast – uses estategrown fruit to produce Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Thirty acres of bluff-top vineyards were planted, when they found the well-drained, sandy loam soil ill-suited for vegetables. It was, however, ideal for the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes. Costa de Oro also produces Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Rosè and Syrah. Tasting room visitors on weekends have a chance to sample reserve vintages that are part of the winery’s library collection. The Gold Coast Marketplace and Costa de Oro wine tasting room are open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. It is on the east side of Highway 101. Use the Stowell Road off-ramp traveling either north or south.
