ON THE COVER WINE COUNTRY THIS WEEK

Nadia Wellisz & Selim Zilkha

LAETITIA VINEYARD Wines of Great Beauty and Elegance

O

n a hillside setting overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Laetitia Vineyard & Winery is committed to producing ultra premium, limited edition Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and sparkling wines that showcase the distinctive qualities of their estate vineyards located in San Luis Obispo County’s Arroyo Grande Valley. Arroyo Grande is a cool viticultural area, notably one of California’s coolest, just 3 miles from the Pacific Ocean, ideal for cultivating Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The narrow east-west valley channels damp, maritime breezes and fog to this Burgundian Eden. It is French tradition that originated the plantings at Laetitia Winery, when in 1982, the terrain was researched as a suitable site for producing Méthode Champenoise sparkling wines for an Americanized version of Champagne Deutz. The soils were compared to those in Epernay in France, and Maison Deutz soon blossomed in this Central Coast AVA, planting about 185 acres to Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay. When the winery’s vineyard owner purchased the property in 1997, still wine production overtook sparkling wine, and owner Jean-Claude Tardivat, who renamed the winery after his daughter Laetitia, realized the superior quality of the Pinot Noir grown of this terroir. A year later, Selim Zilkha, and his daughter, Nadia Wellisz, bought Laetitia Vineyard & Winery and assumed leadership of the brand.

Selim and Nadia bring a successful and varied business background to this estate, as well as a passion for producing truly outstanding wines. Winemakers Eric Hickey (still wines) and Dave Hickey (sparkling wines) are a vibrant and energetic father and son winemaking team whose award-winning efforts have brought much esteem and excitement to the estate. Laetitia owners Selim Zilkha and Nadia Wellisz also own and operate Santa Barbara Highlands Vineyard, located in Santa Barbara County’s Sierra Madre Mountain Range. This winery makes a little of everything and all of it surprisingly well. The sparkling wines are crisp and appealingly straightforward, while the Pinot Noirs are typically rich and structured. The winery is built into a hillside overlooking Highway 101 and is a favorite with wine tourists for its scenic picnic area and friendly tasting-room staff. The tasting room is open daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Laetitia Estate family of brands produces wines of varietal character and a strong sense of place. With each vintage, the team strives to create wines of great beauty and elegance while providing excellent customer service. Laetitia Vineyard & Winery is located at 453 Laetitia Vineyard Drive in Arroyo Grande. You can contact them at (805) 481-1772. CASA DE CABALLOS The Pursuit of Two Passions by Dave Wilcox

P

erched on a hilltop at the end of a serpentine road winding through walnut groves and stately oaks, Casa de Caballos seems to be at the top of the world. But the modest, ranch-style home and the unassuming winery and horse farm you find there are, like their owners, very downto-earth. Dr. Tom Morgan and his wife, Sheila, have uniquely combined their passion for fine wines and fine horses in a setting with breathtaking views of the Paso Robles Wine Country. Standing in the doorway of Morgan’s office upstairs from the winery’s tasting room, looking southwest a panoramic scene of vineyards and rolling hillsides unfolds before you. A late afternoon breeze sweeps through, a whisper of the Pacific Ocean’s presence a little more than 10 miles away. Since planting the first vines in 1983, Dr. Morgan has seen his winemaking hobby blossom into a venture producing approxi-

10

mately 1,200 cases each year, with six acres of vineyards planted to varietals such as Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Riesling and Muscat Canelli. “I call it a hobby run amok,” jokes Morgan. Even though his hobby has become a successful business, the thrill remains. “It’s still a passion,” said Morgan. “Everybody needs an art form. This is what I do. It’s fun to create something.” www.winecountrythisweek.com

Serendipity had something to do with the Morgans finding their way to the Templeton hilltop farm. While in residency in Orange County in the mid-1970s, Morgan traveled to Paso Robles to explore the possibility of establishing a medical practice. During his visit, he met with a fellow internist who worked in Paso Robles – Dr. Stanley Hoffman, one of the area’s pioneering producers of Pinot Noir at HMR Winery. Morgan, who already was experimenting with making berry and fruit wines while in Orange County, made the move north and planted his small vineyard with White Riesling, Pinot Noir and Zinfandel. At the time, there were five wineries in all of San Luis Obispo County. By 1995, Casa de Caballos was bonded and it released its first commercial offering, the ’95 Fantasy White Riesling. Morgan said the varietal thrives on the southwest-facing hilltop, thanks to its 1,280 foot elevation, cooling Pacific breezes and the chalky, clay soil. Those features also enable Casa de Caballos to produce excellent Pinot Noir.

WINE COUNTRY THIS WEEK WINERY FEATURE At the same time Dr. Morgan cultivated his winemaking skills, Sheila Morgan lived out her dream of breeding award-winning Arabian horses. The farm now includes a half-dozen mares and Sheila Morgan has been involved with the births of all but a handful of the 67 foals born there. Wines from Casa de Caballos (“House of Horses”) feature the names and pictures of the brood mares, such as Periwinkle, Forgetmenot and Lilac Tyme. Morgan’s 2006 Lilac Tyme is an unusual blend of 40 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 40 percent Merlot and 20 percent Muscat Canelli, a mixture inspired by his desire to get the color of the wine as close to the color of the horse as possible. The Morgans say their dual passions are complementary. It’s hard to imagine two pursuits with more history and romance than raising horses and making wine. Like many, Morgan was initially drawn to his craft by wine’s noble history, having traveled to Germany while still in college. “Wine has always had a history and a story behind it. I became interested in the history and the mystique.” At the same time, the Morgans try to de-mystify – or, as he said, “de-snobbify” – wine. “The key is whether you like it, or not,” summed up Sheila Morgan. The Morgans are involved with production at Casa de Caballos every step of the way. “Hand-crafted” is a phrase whose meaning can sometimes be stretched to the breaking point, but Morgan isn’t exaggerating when he talks about his personal involvement with the wine. “The thing I enjoy most is that we do it all ourselves. It’s an art form.” Starting with planting the vines, Morgan takes part in every phase of production from vineyard to the glass, including punching down the must by hand, barreling and bottling. Sheila Morgan designs the labels – featuring her Arabian horses – that are then made using the Morgan’s labeling machines. And if you stop by for some tasting, it will be the Morgans happily pouring at the tasting bar – which happens to be fashioned from walnut trees removed to expand the vineyards. Tasting room visitors who want to relax with a bottle of wine or picnic are invited to visit the Morgan’s backyard patio, which offers views of the winery’s Secret Valley Vineyard. The bowl-shaped valley is surrounded by oak groves and can’t be seen from the low-lying roads leading up to Casa de Caballos. The Morgans rent the patio – which includes full, outdoor cooking facilities and can comfortably seat 60 – for small weddings and other gatherings. The winery’s barrel room, housed in an 80year-old barn adjacent to the tasting room, is also available to rent. The tasting room is open Friday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Monday through Thursday by appointment only. They are located at 2225 Raymond Avenue in Templeton. To get there, exit Highway 101 at Vineyard Drive and head west to Bethel Road. Turn left and follow the signs. WILD HEART WINERY A Place to Make and Share Happy Memories

A

group of novice wine-tasters gather around the glass-topped bar at Wild Heart Winery’s elegantly appointed tasting room, listening intently as their host, Jim Burens, shares the finer points of wine tasting with them while wife and business partner, Suzanne, enjoys catching up with wine club members at the other end of the thirty-five-foot bar. Friendly staff members linger after pouring the wine to engage the guests in conversation and laughter blends happily with a melodic backdrop reflecting the talents of artists as varied as Sinatra, Vivaldi and Ghosts on the Radio. Even on the busiest afternoons, the focus at Wild Heart is on providing guests with a positive experience that they will enjoy after they return home, and, hopefully, inspire them to return again. “It seems to be working,” Suzanne says, “we’ve been enjoying seeing folks that first visited us right after our grand opening Mother’s Day weekend last year. It’s like seeing old friends. Jim and I enjoy a lot of

12

the aspects of this business but we both agree that the joy really comes from meeting the people who come in to visit.” Nodding in the direction of Jim and his group at the other end of the bar, Suzanne said, “People seem to really appreciate the tips and techniques we share. Hopefully, it will make their wine tasting experiences more enjoyable and meaningful wherever they go.” A premium boutique winery, Wild Heart features a list of wines that has developed a near cult following among experienced and novice wine drinkers alike, including their Chardonnay, Viognier, the red blend, Capricieux, and the yummy Cabernet Sauvignon, Red Bliss. “Our next release of Zinfandel is being bottled this week,” said Suzanne. “It’s been a long wait for our club members since we sold out of the original vintage at the end of the year.” The winery has other new releases in June including a new red blend, Ghost Red and a new white blend. The former is a tribute to an up-andwww.winecountrythisweek.com

coming young band, Ghosts on the Radio and the friendship that has grown between the Burens and sing-songwriter Ian Robinson who they met when he came in a year ago to taste wine. After cheery “thank-you”s from the young tasters as they part with their purchases, Jim joins the conversation at our end of the bar. “That was fun!” he said. “They were really interested.” Echoing Suzanne’s earlier comments, he added, “That’s the best part of this job … spending time with the visitors.” In addition to the pleasures of the wines, the tasting room features a wide variety of décor and gift items most of which have what Suzanne refers to as “the human touch.” “Our jewelry is all hand-crafted, primarily by three artists, including this one.” Jim nods in Suzanne’s direction. “Suzanne has also found a collective of artists in Ireland that she purchases handcrafted silver pieces from in Celtic and traditional Irish designs. The three local

artists all use real stones, pearls, sterling silver and gold. Suzanne uses a lot of authentic Murano glass hearts in her creations.” “I love working with them.” she said. “They are all one-of-akind, making each piece unique.” She also utilizes a lot of vintage beads in her designs. The walls of the shop are covered with fine art, tapestries and cast-stone wall tiles, signed by their creator. Hand-painted and mouth-blown crystal decorates cabinets and tabletops and fascinating miniatures are a constant cause of amazement for visitors. “Virtually everything here has a story.” That even applies to their ladies’ logo wear embellished with their signature heart designed by Jim and Suzanne’s slogan “Mine is a Wild Heart.” While the latter is subject to personal interpretation by the guests, for Suzanne, it is a reflection of the sentiments expressed in her poem “Un Coeur Sauvage” (A Wild Heart) which helps to explain the genesis of the Winery’s name. “There are two sides to that story also.” She added with a grin. “It depends on which one of us you ask!” They both laugh. It is apparent that while the Burens are busy trying to give their guests happy memories to take with them, they are making a few of their own. Wild Heart Winery’s tasting room is located at 2293C Grand Avenue in Los Olivos, CA 93441. About Salisbury Vineyards John Salisbury – a farmer and wine-grape grower whose roots go all the way up to the Sacramento Delta area where the Salisbury family has been farming in Walnut Grove, CA

since 1850 – began growing grapes in the Paso Robles area in 1997. In 2000, he began renovation on the old Santa Fe schoolhouse, an area landmark and a multiple-use facility for many years. “My father, John, is a great visionary,” says Jennifer Rucks, “and could see the schoolhouse as an ideal location far before anyone else! His role has been the most instrumental to this ‘dream.’” In May of 2005, the work completed, Salisbury opened up the facility under the Salisbury Vineyards name. Now, the old schoolhouse is open for tasting

of Salisbury’s wine seven days a week. Jennifer and her husband, Kevin (also a professional skateboarder) work with John Salisbury in maintaining all operations. With their two children and a past filled with varied and diverse career interests like skatepark owners, artists, and now vintners, the two have made a home here in SLO County in this unique facility. The tasting room also has a gallery, Salisbury Fine Art, owned by her mother, Maridel Salisbury and represents more than 150 recognized artists nationally and even internationally. The wines of Salisbury are as varied and diverse as is the family and the tasting room features the family’s Pinot Noir, cool-climate Syrah, Paso Robles Zinfandel, Chardonnay and even some Cabernet. There are some truly unique wines as well, like Pinot Naturale – not quite a rosé of Pinot Noir, but definitely a nice warm-weather sipper.

2007 Winery Music Awards Competition Opens The 2007 Winery Music Awards competition, the Paso Roblesbased showcase of original music artists from across the US and Canada who are unsigned with major record labels, kicked off its five-concert series of competitions in June with five female artists competing for a spot at the final competition in October and a chance to win prizes, cash and a breakthrough recording contract. The June event was held at Maloy O’Neill Vineyards in Paso Robles and featured a variety of musical genres, including pop, rock, country and folk, performed by artists from Los Angeles, San Diego, Sacramento and Portland, OR. “We are very excited about the caliber of talent that we have playing at this summer’s competition,” says Kathy Kelly, producer of the Winery Music Awards. “It just happened that all of the first five artists were female because of how the schedule worked out, but the July through September Elimination Rounds will be fairly balanced between male and female artists.” A panel of notable judges influential in the music, entertainment and wine industries votes its choices for best artists of the competition. Artists are judged in the categories of originality, musicianship and, most importantly, marketability to the wineconsuming market. The competition is open to the music genres of: jazz, rock, blues, new age, acoustic, country, folk, soft rock, reggae and adult contemporary. June artists were Kerri Dopart, San Diego, CA, Rocky Gaines, Los Angeles, CA; Debra Arlyn, Portland, OR; Shannon Curtis, Sacramento, CA and Kimberly Jean, Los Angeles, CA. The results of each Elimination Round concert are posted on the Winery Music Awards website, www.winerymusicawards.com. “The atmosphere is both relaxed and filled with excitement at the same time. Hearing relatively unknown artists perform wonderful music is like tasting a new wine for the first time and absolutely loving it – both moments are experiences to be savored. When you take everything into account – the music, the wine, the winery atmosphere, and the chance to see and hear possibly the next Platinum seller, this truly is a unique and exciting event,” adds Kelly. Ticket information is also available on the website, or by calling 1-800-838-3006. A total of twenty unsigned, original music artists compete at the Winery Music Awards Semi-Final Elimination Round concerts, held on one Saturday each month from June to September, with the final competition on Sunday, October 7. Founded and produced by Kathy Kelly Productions, Inc., the competition was created out of the growing popularity of quality musical performances at many wineries throughout California. Artist performances are judged by music and entertainment industry professionals in the categories of originality, musicianship and marketability to the prime wine-consuming market, men and

women aged 21-54 The Grand Prize winner of the previous Winery Music Awards competition, held in 2005, was Arroyo Grande’s rock group, Threes and Nines, who is releasing their first CD this year after winning a recording contract with RNB Music (www.rnbtunes.com), a Los Angeles-based record label. The group’s self-titled CD, will be distributed worldwide by Fontana Distribution, a division of Universal Music. A second CD, titled Blend, featuring a compilation of many of the 2005 artists complete with artist bios and liner notes on the Paso Robles Wine Region, will also be released by RNB Music this summer and will be available for sale at all Winery Music Awards concerts and the website.

Some people are saying Paso Robles is fast becoming the next Napa Valley. Since it’s about three hours south of the Bay Area, Paso Robles is a great destination for a weekend getaway. You won’t find the crowds or the traffic but you will find fine wine, plenty of tasting rooms and lots to do. We’ve made several trips to Paso Robles on “In Wine Country” shoots and are amazed each time by the transformation of cattle grazing land to vineyards. I used to be a news anchor near Paso Robles in the 1980s, when Paso was considered more of a cow town than a wine town. Back then the Mid-State Fair was Paso’s biggest draw. Fortunately for us, Paso Robles has managed to hang on to its small-town charm while emerging as a force to be reckoned with on the wine scene. Paso is known for sizzling hot summers and cool nights. The closer you get to the coast, the milder the temperatures, but inland, the heat and cold can be quite dramatic. If you tend to wilt in the heat, spring is a great time to visit because temperatures are quite comfortable and the scenery is stunning. By July, almost all but the hills have turned a golden brown, but right now there are plenty of rolling green hills to enjoy. Justin Winery Justin Winery is among the brightest stars in Paso Robles. Their Isosceles meritage is one of the most acclaimed Bordeaux blends in California. But owners Justin and Deborah Baldwin offer the full Wine Country experience with a restaurant, Deborah’s Room, and a small inn tucked away among the vines, appropriately called the Just Inn. With only three rooms, you’ll feel as if you’re staying in your own private Wine Country. Another must-stop along the Paso Robles wine trail is Eberle Winery. Gary Eberle is a pioneer on this wine scene. He co-founded the Paso Robles appellation in 1980 and is considered the Johnny Appleseed of Syrah because he introduced the first 100% varietal planting of Syrah grapes in California. Eberle was also the first winery on the Central Coast to put in underground caves, and with 17 thousand square feet of underground tunnels, they remain among the biggest. Despite his contribution to Paso Wine Country, Gary is about as laid-back as they come. When I visited Eberle, he challenged me to a game of bocce, wine glass in hand, claiming they play “strip-bocce” at Eberle. He was kidding, but Gary’s fun-loving personality definitely sets the tone. In fact, it’s one of the few big wineries left that still pours wine without a tasting fee. Make sure to rub the nose of the bronze boar when you visit; it is good luck. From wild boars to wild coyotes, another side of Paso Robles can be found at Wild Coyote Winery. Wild Coyote is one of the newer wineries to make its appearance on the Paso Robles wine scene and it’s unlike any other winery we’ve been to before. For one thing, it’s styled after the adobe pueblos of New Mexico and for another, there’s a genuine teepee on site. It’s all part of the vision of its owner and winemaker, Gianni Manucci. Gianni is passionate about Native American culture and its connection with the earth. That passion is reflected in his winemaking style, but also in the winery itself. You’ll find Native American artifacts alongside Gianni’s stone sculptures in the tasting room, and if Gianni isn’t pouring some of his Zinfandel, Syrah or Merlot, he may well be out in the teepee, playing his flute. Gianni also recently opened a five-room, New Mexico-style retreat on site that’s part bed and breakwww.winecountrythisweek.com

fast and part spiritual hideaway. These are just a few of the wineries we’ve featured on “In Wine Country” but there are dozens more worth checking out. In fact, Paso Robles offers a wealth of fun places to explore including Windrose Farm, famous for organic heirloom tomatoes, Willow Creek Olive Ranch, makers of the acclaimed Pasolivo olive oil and gourmet restaurants such as Bistro Laurent and Villa Creek. It’s not Napa, yet, and that’s part of the charm. Paso Robles is definitely up and coming but it hasn’t abandoned its small town roots. There’s still a Mayberry-ish vibe to the town and you can’t help but hope it stays that way. When you visit, leave your Gucci shoes at home and pack the Timberland boots instead; and if you go during the summer, don’t miss the 4H livestock competition at the Mid State Fair. Speaking of favorite Wine Country places, a quick reminder to cast your votes in the third annual Golden Grape Awards. Each year, we ask our viewers to tell us their favorite places from Wine Country gardens, to yummiest bargain bites and best Wine Country adventures. Go to www.inwinecountry.com to vote. Smiling families dine at sidewalk cafés with checkered tableclothes and umbrellas. Starry-eyed couples toast each other with wine. Artists wearing bérets paint at their easels. The air is filled with music, laughter and the tempting aromas of French cuisine. Surely this must be France? Actually, it’s the 20th Annual French Festival in Santa Barbara, Saturday and Sunday, July 14 and 15 (Bastille Day Weekend), from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. in Santa Barbara’s Oak Park. Admission is free. While Parisians celebrate the French Revolution 8,000 miles away, Californians will revel in the sights, sounds, foods and joie de vivre of France at the largest French celebration in the Western United States. More than 20,000 people are expected to attend. It’s where America celebrates France! Non-stop free entertainment fills three stages, including cancan, Moroccan belly dancers, grand opera, hot jazz a la Django Reinhardt, the Femmes Fatales Drag Review, French Tahitian dance, African drumming and dance, Carribbean komba music, and cabaret music in the tradition of Edith Piaf, Maurice Chevalier and Josephine Baker. Wandering mimes, jugglers and accordion players will perform throughout the crowd. There’s also lots for the kids to do. Dozens of chefs prepare fine French food. Enjoy Perrier, Kronenbourg French beer, wine, Champagne, Calistoga and soft drinks.

46 West Wineries Host Wine and Cheese Night O CALIF RNIA

46 WEST

July 13th Friday Night Wine and Cheese The Highway 46 West Wineries Group is having another great Friday night Wine and Cheese Event. The group of 13 wineries will be tasting will taste award-winning wines. Great cheese and breads will be available for tasting to complement the wine. The event will be held at Doce Robles Winery on Friday, July 13 from 6 to 8 p.m. The admission for the event is $15 per person and $25 per couple, tickets sold at the door. The Grapeline will be taking reservations for transportation to and from the event. For more information, call 1-888-8-WINERY.

About Highway 46 West Wineries Group In 2004, thirteen wineries on Highway 46 West formed the Highway 46 West Wineries Group. This group was formed to promote the tasting rooms of the beautiful west side and to make people aware of the uniqueness of 46 West and the wines produced there. Paso Robles Wine Country is as unique and inviting as the people who have dedicated themselves to nurturing the vineyards and crafting fine wines. Visitors to Highway 46 West find the road less traveled is often marked by the thrill of discovery in this uncongested region. It’s an area where hospitality is first among a long list of qualities … where being friends and neighbors is as important as producing stellar wines. Highway 46 West is one thread that weaves among the vineyards and wineries connecting longtime estates with exciting new producers. Rolling hills, majestic oaks and lush vineyards await the wine lover at every turn. The tasting rooms of Highway 46 West invite you to enjoy our neighborhood, relax under the spell of our friendly environment and savor life while sipping our spectacular wines. The participating wineries consist of Brian Benson Cellars, Castoro Cellars, Dark Star Cellars, Doce Robles, Eagle Castle, Fratelli Perata, Grey Wolf, Hunt Cellars, JanKris Winery, Midnight Cellars, Peachy Canyon, Windward Vineyard and Rotta Winery and are all included on the 46 West Passport. The passport is your map to the Westside, including descriptions and hours for each winery. Just like a travel passport you will get a unique stamp from each winery. Once you get 7 stamps you will receive a beautifully designed poster of all the participating wineries labels. When your passport is full with all thirteen stamps, your gift is another poster signed by all of the winemakers and entry into a quarterly drawing for prizes from a weekend stay at one of the groups hotel sponsors to a guided tasting tour. Throughout the year the group puts on other events such as Tax Revolt Weekend and West Fest. West Fest is the big event of the year. All thirteen wineries come together to pour great wines while guests listen to blues music and enjoy delicious food from local caterers. For more information, check out the 46 West Wineries website at www.paso46westwineries.com.
