Winemakers Solicited for 10th Annual Fund Raiser Wineries Sought to Compete for Winemakers’ Cookoff Honors Event host, the Paso Robles Rotary Club, kicked off its campaign to sign up 30 Central Coast wineries to participate in its 10th annual Winemakers’ Cookoff. The event features winemaker-chefs grilling their own culinary creations and pairing them with some of their finest wines. Winemaker pairings will be served to 1,000 attendees as the participating wineries vie for both “People’s Choice” and “Judges” award recognition. This year, the cookoff will be held on Saturday, August 9, from 6 to 9 p.m. at River Oaks Hot Springs Spa in Paso Robles. All net proceeds from ticket sales and sponsorships benefit the Paso Robles Rotary’s Harlow Ford Scholarship Foundation, which awards college scholarships to area high-school seniors. “Beginning this year we will be promoting ‘Make it a Winemakers’ Weekend;’ encouraging participating wineries to offer event attendees discounts

and special activities throughout the cookoff weekend. We hope this promotion will have a ‘win-win’ effect by enhancing the attendees’ Wine Country experience and generating new customers and additional revenue for participating wineries,” said Vicki Silva, the 2008 event’s winery chair.

Wineries interested in being part of this year’s Winemakers’ Cookoff or wishing additional information should contact Vicki Silva at (805) 239-5151. Tickets are $75. For tickets or more information, call 1-877-6868564 (toll free) or visit the Cookoff on the web, www.winemakerscookoff.com.

CASTORO CELLARS Dam Fine Wines by Mark Storer

T

o the old world, celebrating 25 years in the winemaking business must seem a pittance. But here in the New World, 25 years in business is a major milestone – especially when one considers that the 25 years was and is being done in Paso Robles, which only became a major wine region in the 1970s. That is where Niels Udsen and the Castoro Cellars family find themselves these days. “It’s really an accomplishment,” says Udsen, obviously proud of his “dam fine wine,” the Castoro motto. Castoro means “beaver” in Italian and it so happens that Udsen somehow garnered the nickname “beaver” as a lad. The name carried forward and is now a name that means “dam fine wine.” Udsen’s own education included a degree in Agri-business from Cal Poly, SLO and while there, he, “did a couple of projects for wineries. I really enjoyed it and honestly thought it would be a great business to get into.” 25 years have seen a great many changes

10

in Paso Robles, not the least of which is its official designation as an AVA and now a major world wine-growing region. Castoro has 550 acres under vines in the region and is in the process of planting 25 more acres at its Whale Rock Vineyard on Bethel Road in Paso Robles. “We’re trying to get to a point where we rely solely on our own vineyards,” says Udsen. “But we still purchase grapes from places we like or people we enjoy working with.” One such collaboration is the famed Bien Nacido Vineyard to the south in Santa Barbara County, from which Castoro has produced award winning wines including a reserve Pinot Noir. Castoro produces between 65,000 and 70,000 cases of wine a year. “We’re sort of in that middle range,” says Udsen. “Most business models are based on either production below 3,000 cases a year or above 100,000 a year. We’re not there…yet.” There’s no rush, either. Castoro has spent the years fulfilling their promise of fine, quality wine, not massive amounts of juice. That attention to detail has resulted in their recent certification by the California Certified Organic Farmers association as an organic www.winecountrythisweek.com

vineyard. “We’ve been farming that way for a long time, honestly. We just had to get through the paperwork,” Udsen says. Still, 100 acres are now certified organic on the Castoro Estate and the rest of the acreage is farmed in a similar fashion. Organic farming and sustainable practices have taken hold in the wine industry for many years now. Beyond the obvious “green” implications, it’s also the best way to ensure that a winery can operate for many years. The new plantings at Whale Rock Vineyard this year will be Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. “We thought it was time to use that coolness we get on the west side to our advantage. Pinot in particular does well in that climate,” says Udsen. Paso Robles’ west side vineyards benefit from the cool ocean breezes that make their way up the canyons in the evening, cooling temperatures as much as 40 to 50 degrees during summer evenings at times. “We do a lot of custom crush work, too,” says Udsen. “This will give us an upper hand in making sure we produce a more consistent and better product.” Udsen has also spent a good deal of time growing his brand. “We’ve

WINE COUNTRY THIS WEEK WINE COUNTRY NEWS been working with distributors more and more to set goals and sell more wine in different places,” he says. “I like to sell for fun once in a while, but I have a couple of people who do most of that.” Castoro’s secret weapon, if there is such a thing, however, is winemaker Tom Myers. Myers has a long and storied history in the Paso Robles area and is highly respected and sought after as a winemaking consultant. “He’s had a hand in every vintage we’ve produced,” says Udsen. The 25 year celebration has already kicked off and more events are planned as summer gets into full gear. Most importantly, special pricing can be found on Castoro wines as well as various music and dinner events at the scenic winery on Paso’s west side. Udsen himself enjoys the celebration aspect of Castoro wines. “I think my favorite food and wine pairing on the white wine side would be baked salmon with fresh vegetables from our garden, beets and carrots and the like, and then we make a sauce with the wine. I pair that with Pinot Blanc or our Tango blend,” says Udsen. “On the red side, well, that’s barbecue with our anniversary blend,” he says. The next 25 years look plenty bright for Castoro’s “dam fine wines.” With new vineyards, new blends and the newly certified vintages from 2007, Castoro has made its place in Paso Robles history. “I’m proud of what we’ve done,” says Udsen. “It’s been 25 years of producing great wines.” Castoro Cellars is located at 1315 N. Bethel Road in Templeton. The tasting room is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. For more information, call (805) 238-0725. www.winecountrythisweek.com

ontinuing a long line of making traditional sparkling wines, Laetitia Winery is one of the few wineries on the entire Central Coast that creates a variety of sparkling wine in the French Methode Champenoise style. The winery was formed in 1982, as a U.S. extension of the well known French winery, Champagne Deutz. Through successive ownerships Laetitia has expanded their acreage in both Arroyo Grande as well as Santa Barbara County into a powerhouse winery with wide distribution. They have become known for their extensive sparkling wines (international law forbids California sparkling wine to be called Champagne, which is a specific region in France), as well as Pinot Noir, not to mention a multitude of other varietals. Currently, Laetitia produces

more than 70,000 cases of wine each year. The tasting room showcases two distinct bars, a wood bar and their ceramic bar. They also offer three labels; Laetitia, Nadia (their newest label) and Barnwood, wines from Santa Barbara County. The amazing thing about Laetitia is that they offer such a broad spectrum of choices, from sparkling to Pinot Noir, to Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo, Syrah and Chardonnay, Viognier and much more. They are known for their Pinot Noir and currently have more than 400 acres of Pinot Noir planted which take advantage of the prevailing cooling breezes from the coast a few miles away from their tasting room and winery. Laetitia’s site is also fortunate to have an abundance of gravely clay soil, perfect for keeping the vines well drained. A stop at Laetitia Winery offer two tasting schedules: a complimentary taste of five estate wines which includes the Brut Cuvee sparkling wine out of a possible 13 wines, a www.winecountrythisweek.com

handful of Barnwood and Laetitia wines, or the reserve tasting, which is five tastes for a $10 fee and includes your choice of the five sparklers, two Nadia wines (a white blend and a red blend) and many reserve wines. They also offer five different wine clubs for multiple palettes. Bottle prices at Laetitia range from $14 to $60 so there’s something to fit every budget. Laetitia also offers multiple outdoor picnic areas with expansive views of the rolling hills of vines, glimpses of Highway 101 and even a bocce ball court. They also provide a demonstration vineyard, showing rows of vines planted with different trellising techniques and types of varieties of grapes planted. Laetitia Winery is located directly off Highway 101 between Santa Maria and San Luis Obispo at 453 Laetitia Vineyard Drive in Arroyo Grande. They are open every day between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. Phone 1-888809-VINE for further information or to schedule a group tasting.

Tolosa Dedicates a Space For Wine and Cheese Pairings Tolosa has announced the resumption of Wine and Cheese Pairing as of June 7th, 2008. This will be the third year of this increasingly popular event. In 2006, Tolosa felt that although every winery had the opportunity to present their wine, few took the initiative to pair varietals with cheese. “Learning about our wines is a great start – next comes pairing them with food, so we offer the quintessential food pairing; great cheeses that compliment our wines,” comments Bob Schiebelhut, principal at Tolosa. Every Saturday from June through September, between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., guests can enjoy four Tolosa estate wines paired with four artisan cheeses. The pairings are presented in Tolosa’s “sanctuary,” Heritage Room, which overlooks the surrounding vineyards. Here, apart from the “hustle and bustle” of the tasting room, guests can relax and enjoy what we hope will be a learning experience. The artisan cheeses are typically purchased from San Luis Obispo’s Monterey Street Wine Company, who offers a vast amount of choices from around the globe. Prior to each menu’s publication, the manager of Monterey Street and Tolosa’s Concierge, John Shakley, together taste the wines and cheeses to capture the best possible pairing. “A good wine can be great with the right cheese, but a great wine can be bad with the wrong one,” quotes John Shakley. Each Saturday a different list of diverse wines and cheeses are offered, which encourages guests that have a great experience to return a different week and try all new pairings. This year, Tolosa has also added another option in the Heritage Room, alongside the pairings. Guests can purchase a flight of reserve wine tastings, including limited-production varietals, barrel select and library wines. The reserve tasting will be $10 for the public and complimentary to Tolosa Heritage Society Members. Tolosa’s Wine and Cheese Pairings are located in the Heritage Room at 4910 Edna Road, San Luis Obispo. The pairings began June 7th, and last through September 27th, 2008. Guests can arrive anytime between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. for the pairing. Reservations are not required, but recommended for parties of six or more. Cost is $20 for the public or $15 for Heritage Society Members. For questions or reservations, contact John Shakley at (805) 782-0500 ext. 10 or [email protected].

PREFERRED RESTAURANTS C AY U C O S

MAMA’S MEATBALL by Charles Neave One pretty reliable way to find out just how good the food at a local restaurant is, is to ask somebody in the restaurant business. Ask a bartender, a waiter, anyone in fact, what they think of Mama’s meatballs in San Luis Obispo and their lips begin to quiver, their eyes roll towards the heavens, they sigh; that is how good Mama’s Meatball is. Set in a small courtyard off of one of the town’s main streets, in a place called the Old Creamery, Mama’s Meatball is actually divided in two. On the right is the take-out where people line up to get their orders of meatballs and more. To the left, fronted by a huge-trunked tree and a water fountain, is the intimate restaurant with it’s mural of the Mediterranean across the back. Meatballs aside, the restaurant, under owner and chef Nicola Allegretta, offers a wide range of authentic Italian dishes, many of them now available in smaller sizes as well, a bow to the economy and his customer’s wishes. Among them are half a dozen soups, a long list of salads (including grilled salmon and a refreshing pear and gorgonzola), some wonderful antipasto choices, both hot and cold paninis (including, of course, one made with meatballs), more pasta dishes than there is space here to share (though the Ravioli di Pollo all Vodka – homemade ravioli filled with chicken and served in a vodka sauce – cannot go unmentioned). There is also a heady selection of meat and fish dishes as well as any number of traditional and specialty pizzas (now available in two sizes) and some far too-tempting desserts. ROBERT HALL WINERY A ‘Hallmark’ for Paso Robles

T

ucked into the hillside east of Paso Robles, along California’s enchanting Central Coast, lies a dream 40 years in the making. An entrepreneur with tremendous business acumen, Robert L. Hall has built a world-class winery which has become a landmark for the Paso Robles community. During a family trip to France in the late ’70s, Robert visited the Rhône valley and was captivated by the winery lifestyle of farming, crafting wine and the pairing of wine with food. Robert began developing his idea for a premium-producing vineyard and winery in the early-’80s, and ventured west with the goal of visiting each of California’s wine appellations to explore the optimum growing conditions for the production of premium wine grapes, specifically the Rhône varieties he had enjoyed so much. In the early-’90s, Robert and Margaret discovered the perfect terroir in the Paso Robles appellation. Featuring soil rich in nutrients, coupled with warm days and cool nights, Robert felt the viticultural conditions were ideal to the development of the enological characteristics he was seeking to produce. “Home Ranch” was acquired in 1995. Soon after, the “Terrace” and “Bench” vineyards joined the Hall Ranch enclave. The Hall Ranch honors old world tradi-

18

tions with new world technology. As true stewards of the land, environmental sustainability is practiced to conserve natural resources. Measures practiced include resource management thru the preservation of native oak trees on the Hall Ranch, energy and water conservation thru the recycling and treatment of waste water for vineyard and landscape irrigation, use of a natural pumice, diatomaceous earth and organic compost tea in the vineyard as well as cover crops, beneficial insects and permaculture gardens. In July 2001, Robert Hall welcomed Winemaker Don Brady to Robert Hall Winery. A native of Texas, Don began working in the wine industry while a student at Texas Tech University, continuing his career path with Texas wineries prior to moving to California. Don received honors by his industry peers by receiving the International Wine and Spirits “Wine of America” award, as well as recognition by the Paso Robles Wine Country Alliance in partnership with the Independent Grape Growers of Paso Robles and San Luis Obispo Vintners Association as the “Winemaker of the Year” in 2006. Don says his “goal is to capture the essence of the vineyard as well as enhance the quality of wine by getting the best www.winecountrythisweek.com

product possible out of each vine.” Robert Hall Winery is most known their Cabernet Sauvignon, in addition to a proprietary blend – the Rhône de Robles, which includes Grenache, Syrah, Cinsaut and Counoise. The Robert Hall Winery tasting room has a tremendous selection of over fifteen wines available for tasting including the awardwinning Blanc de Robles, Meritage and Vintage Port. Open daily, the Hospitality Center is a destination for wine enthusiasts. Guided Educational Tours are available and include a tour of the state-of-the-art winemaking facility and 19,000 square feet of underground wine caverns – the largest on the Central Coast. Enjoy a barrel tasting as you learn about the winemaking process from the vine to the glass. The winery also hosts special events throughout the year including food and wine seminars, outdoor concerts, weddings and private celebrations. Today, Robert and Margaret have established very solid roots in ever-growing wine community of Paso Robles. Robert Hall Winery is the result of an old-fashioned work ethic combined with traditional winemaking techniques, state-of-the-art equipment and a team of dedicated professionals. Robert invites all to drop by for a visit to discover the essence of Paso Robles.

Wine Event Company Inspires Love & Romance with Cinema e Vino – Great Films, Great Wines, Great Food If the thought of being outside under the stars on a warm summer night and sharing great wine, great food and a great film with someone you love is your idea of a romantic evening then look no further than Cinema e Vino to be able to provide that perfect atmosphere for just such an evening. Cinema e Vino partners with selected California Central Coast wineries to create romantic evenings for people who enjoy wine tasting, Italian cuisine and watching great movies. The company, founded by Gina DeGirolamo and Melita Toscano, turns scenic wineries into romantic vineyard cinemas. “Last year was such a huge success for us that there was no question we would do a second season,” says Gina. “The most wonderful thing for us was that so many people came to celebrate special occasions such as anniversaries, birthdays and honeymoons. We even had one couple get engaged at our event.” The evening begins with a private wine tasting just for Cinema e Vino guests at select vineyards such as Cass, Villicana, Meridian and Gainey. Each event is created to accommodate a limited amount of people, ensuring a warm and intimate environment from start to finish. Guests are then escorted to a scenic vineyard theater, staged with comfortable chairs and cozy blankets. Once seated, your gourmet Tuscan dinner basket is served, freshly prepared and warm from the oven. Under a canopy of stars and with friends, family or that very special someone by your side, a film flickers to life on the screen.

Cinema e Vino’s state-of-the-art equipment ensures a first-rate cinematic experience, while the food, wine and Mother Nature provide the ambiance. “This year we are particularly excited to be offering very special weekend packages that include hotel accommodations and spa treatments to complement the Cinema a Vino experience,” says Melita. “The company is expanding to include elements that seem to go hand in hand. More than a stand alone event, Cinema e Vino becomes the centerpiece of a fun filled, romantic and memorable weekend.” Ticket price is $65 for wine club members, $75 for the general public (includes $10 voucher good for wine room purchase that evening). Advance ticket purchase is required due to limited seating per event. Cinema E Vino is also available for corporate and private functions, as well as fundraisers. MIDLIFE CRISIS WINERY Three Dogs, A Three Hour Commute and A Crazy Dream is all the stuff that happens after shooting before release. The strikes you have all heard about are part of the impetus for the commute and the dream – but more on that in a minute. In our fourth vintage, we started all of this in August 2004 and have made the commute virtually every weekend since then either separately or together – but always with the dogs – and thus the second clue of our riddle.

by Jill Mittan

R

iddle me this – what do three dogs, a three hour commute and a crazy dream all have in common? Answer – the Midlife Crisis Winery. Spend a little time here with us as we explain the riddle and share a little of the crisis and the dream. Founded in 2004, the Midlife Crisis Winery more than lives up to the crisis part of its name. We are a very small winery. Just the two of us, Kevin and Jill Mittan, operate the winery so we wear many, many hats. We are the winemakers, the cellar workers, the bottling line as well as the marketing and sales staff and regularly fulfill that nebulous job description of “other duties as required.” There is no “official” winery building – the wines are made at a cooperative facility in Paso Robles right now. Nor do we grow our own grapes – yet – instead fruit is purchased from several growers in the Paso Robles appellation. But we do have a tasting room right in the heart of downtown Paso Robles. Carlos, Arenda and Dawn handle everything for us when we are not there. Which leads to one of the clue to the riddle.

A Three Hour Commute We make wine on weekends around jobs in Los Angeles. The commute from our five day a week home in the San Fernando Valley to our house (and the future site of our winery) is just about three hours depending on weather and how many CHP cars we see. Our day jobs are in the entertainment industry in post production – which

22

Three Dogs (sort of) We often joke that our Australian Shepherds, Maggie (now deceased), Sydney and Roo, are the real owners of the winery. Besides being part of our commuter lifestyle, the dogs also have their place in our story and our dream. We are DINKS (dual income, no kids) and the dogs kind of fill in the place of the children we couldn’t have. Maggie and Sydney were rescues – we plan to become a foster home for Australian Shepherd Rescue when we land in Paso Robles full time. Until then, we contribute part of our sales to both Australian Shepherd Rescue and the ASPCA. And, to complete their place in the dream, the terrible trio each have a wine named in their honor. Roo Boy Red is the Midlife’s proprietary red blend and Maggie’s Magic and Sydney’s Surprise are fun sparkling wines. And now to the last clue in the riddle –

One Absolutely Crazy Dream The winery is the result of years of daydreaming about doing something else besides the day jobs (which we have not been able to shed yet) and that restlessness that we all feel in at some point in our lives.

www.winecountrythisweek.com

WINE COUNTRY THIS WEEK WINE COUNTRY NEWS Most people satisfy the daydreams and the restlessness with a great vacation or a Corvette and are over their “midlife crisis.” We, unfortunately, couldn’t settle for anything that simple. We had been passionate amateur winemakers for a long time before we started Midlife Crisis. We loved creating wine because it was something totally different than the world of our day jobs. Wine is real and we can hold those bottles in our hands and say, “I made this.” So we decided to give winemaking a try. Today, we produce a whole bunch of wines that are an eclectic mix of Italian, Rhône and Bordeaux varietals including Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Syrah, Sangiovese, Barbera, Merlot and Zinfandel in addition to the dog wines we mentioned. We will introduce our 2006 Nebbiolo and a red blend called Crisis this summer in time for our wine club shipments. So now you know all about our riddle. Midlife Crisis is our crazy dream that is slowly but surely becoming reality. It has taught us a lot along the way. Chasing this dream is harder than we thought it would be. But, the winery is also infinitely rewarding in ways we could never have imagined. And there is more to come in our crazy dream. We hope to build a sustainable winery on our property just off 46 East along with some vineyards, the dog kennels and whatever else we figure out. We hope you’ll come visit and share a little of our dream and tell us something about yours – at www.midlifecrisiswinery.com or at our tasting room in downtown Paso Robles at 1244 Pine Street.

DOWNTOWN PASO ROBLES WINE COUNTRY THIS WEEK

Anglim Winery’s Tasting Room was a Train Depot in 1887 Get most dads a home winemaking kit for Father’s Day and it will probably wind up gathering dust in some corner of the garage. Not Steve Anglim. And when his first winemaking efforts intrigued his wife, Steffanie, she suggested they see what he could do with some quality grapes. They purchased some Pinot Noir, Merlot and Syrah from Santa Barbara County — the Anglims were living in Southern California at the time — and that was it. “It kind of snowballed in our garage,” said Steffanie, “because Steve doesn’t do anything small.” That was more than 10 years ago. By 2002, the couple established Anglim Winery, releasing a Syrah, and followed that up a year later added Viognier. By 2005, they had opened the Paso Robles tasting room and the winery now produces about 4,000 cases annually featuring a range of mostly Rhône varietals.

The downtown tasting room, a couple of blocks from the Paso Robles’ historic center, is located in a building that housed the city’s first train depot, dating to 1887. The charming spot features the depot’s original wood floors and windows, with the renovated interior maintaining the feel of a century-old depot. Inside, are a couple of tables and a small tasting bar. It’s a bit off the beaten path, but attracts both a lunchtime clientele and visitors who drop by before walking to one of Paso Robles’ renowned restaurants that have opened in recent years. As for the wines themselves, Steffanie Anglim said her husband strives to make food-friendly wines that are elegant and balanced and “not overly in your face.”

The Anglim Winery tasting room is at 740 Pine Street (next to the newer train depot), a couple of blocks south of Paso Robles City Park. Tasting hours are 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Thursday through Monday, except Sunday, when it opens at noon. You can also visit by appointment, which can be made by calling (805) 227-6813. You can also visit the winery’s website at www.anglimwinery.com.

International Organization Teams Up With Paso Robles Winery To End Hunger Urban Farming and Steinbeck Vineyards & Winery Launches Vineyards Growing Veggies™ Pilot Program For Vineyards. On Saturday, May 31, dozens of volunteers from the local community pitched in to help plant approximately one acre of vegetables on donated, fertile growing land at Steinbeck Vineyards & Winery located on Union Road in Paso Robles as part of a new Vineyards Growing Veggies™ initiative expanding Urban Farming’s mission to end hunger. Steinbeck Vineyards will be the first vineyard in the US to launch the Vineyards Growing Veggies™ pilot program and act as the model to encourage other vineyards to participate in the Urban Farming program across the country and worldwide. Vineyards Growing Veggies™ is an expansion of the Urban Farming campaign, INCLUDE FOOD!™ when planting and landscaping. Using and teaching organic growing methods, the fresh-farmed, locally grown vegetables will be given away to local area food banks, volunteers tending the garden and families in need living in the surrounding community. “My family is thrilled to be part of such a great cause during a very difficult time in our economy,” said Cindy Newkirk of Steinbeck Vineyards & Winery. “With skyrocketing gas and food prices and the threat of food shortages from the use of food for fuel, we are happy to help our neighbors in this community. In addition, growing organic food through a community effort not only nourishes our bodies, but it fosters a sense of belonging and builds friendships,” she added. Also contributing to the Vineyards Growing Veggies™ program is the Farm Supply Company who is generously donating all of the irrigation system design plans, hardware and installation; Hometown Nursery is contributing vegetable seedlings along with numerous bags of grow mulch and Meyer Trucking will be involved in trucking over 4000 seedlings from Cal Poly to Los Angeles as part of the Urban Farming Food Chain™ program. Urban Farming was first introduced to the Paso Robles Wine Region through the Winery Music Awards, a summer-long music competition among unsigned artists that took place last year in Paso Robles. Taja Sevelle, founder of Urban Farming was introduced to Kathy Kelly, founder/producer of the Winery Music Awards at the final competition last year at River Oaks Hot Springs and Spa. The result of that meeting began two new Urban Farming initiatives, the Vineyards Growing Veggies™ program and a blossoming relationship with Cal Poly’s Agricultural School. For more information, contact Joyce Lapinsky, Program Director at Urban Farming at (323) 610-0798 or Kathy Kelly, Vineyards Growing Veggies™ Program at (805) 434-5100 or (310) 717-8750.

WINE COUNTRY THIS WEEK PASO ROBLES

Falcon Nest Winery – Just Like a Trip to Tuscany If you’ve ever had the good fortune to visit a winery in Italy, you know what it’s like to enjoy the combination of great wine, beautiful scenery and most of all, warm and welcoming people. Now you don’t have to endure a 12-hour plane flight to experience the delights of Italy. Falcon Nest Winery is the creation of Francesco Grande and his lovely wife, Carolynn. Francesco was born in Calabria and grew up in the Tuscany region of Italy. Like so many of his fellow countrymen, his passion for food and wine has been the focus of his life. For twenty-eight years he ran a successful and very, very busy restaurant in Los Angeles. It took a long-time friend and customer to convince him that he needed a little vacation. A trip up to the Paso Robles wine-growing region was just supposed to provide a little rest and relaxation. But with only one look at the stunningly beautiful rolling hills of Central California, Francesco knew that it was time for a new challenge. It was time to return to his roots. “Wine has been in my family for centuries. My father was a winemaker, my grandfather was a winemaker as was his father before him and his father before him! In Italy, it is a way of life,” says Francesco. With the gusto he gave to his cooking, Francesco has turned his land into some of the finest vineyards in the area. His picturesque little winery on the top of the hill looks over a seemingly endless sea of vines. He now has fifty-five acres planted in Cabernet, Merlot, Syrah, Petite Verdot and Zinfandel. “I love the art of cooking, but once the food is on the table, it is soon gone. There is an art to winemaking as well plus it lasts a lot longer. With aging wine becomes better. Food becomes worse!” says Francesco.

Carol and Francesco Grande

WINE COUNTRY THIS WEEK SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY

Costa de Oro Celebrates Its Second Anniversary In 2006, Gold Coast Farms and Costa De Oro Winery proudly opened The Gold Coast Marketplace. On June 21, they will be celebrating their 2nd anniversary from noon to 4 p.m. with library wines, catered barbecue and live music. A stone fruit’s throw from Highway 101 in Santa Maria, its easy accessibility attracts both travelers just passing through and wine enthusiasts launching a day of tasting along the Foxen Canyon wine trail. The tasting room is part of the Gold Coast Marketplace where an array of fresh produce and gourmet foods are available along with Costa de Oro’s award-winning wines. Sure, the shopping’s great, but Costa de Oro’s wines are reason enough to visit. Winemaker Gary Burk’s craftsmanship has earned plaudits from wine critics and a number of awards, including Best in Show at both the Orange and Santa Barbara County fairs.

Costa de Oro – Spanish for Gold Coast – uses estate-grown fruit to produce Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Thirty acres of bluff-top vineyards were planted by Burk’s father, Ron, and his Gold Coast Farms partner, Robert Espinola, when they found the well-drained, sandy loam soil ill-suited for vegetables. It was, however, ideal for the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes. Costa de Oro also produces Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Rosè and Syrah. The Gold Coast Marketplace and Costa de Oro wine tasting room are open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. It is on the east side of Highway 101. Use the Stowell Road off-ramp traveling either north or south. Come celebrate this milestone event Costa de Oro style! For more information, call (805) 922-1468, visit the website at www.costadeorowinery.com or email [email protected].

SANTA BARBARA COUNTY WINE COUNTRY THIS WEEK

Cal Poly Vineyard Reliant on Wine & Golf Fund Raiser Education budget cuts have delayed the launch of Cal Poly’s original goals for a state-of-the-art wine production facility. The Wine & Golf Symposium was created in 2002 as a vehicle to raise money for the Cal Poly Wine and Viticulture Program, through scholarships and

To Santa Maria, Paso Robles

funding for the on-campus vineyard. The annual event, which raised $12,000 last year for the program, will take place on Friday, June 13 as an invitational event for its sponsors. The Wine and Viticulture Degree Program, which started in 2004, has been entirely reliant on private and industry funding for the 15 acre on-campus vineyard. The Wine & Golf Symposium is a once a year non-profit event that seeks sponsors, mainly from the local wine industry, to fundraise for the program. The golf tournament is being held at The Links at Vista Del Hombre golf course in the heart of Paso Robles Wine Country. There is also a banquet following the event which will be hosted by Silver Horse Winery. The event is an invitational with a $500 minimum sponsorship to have a player in the golf tournament. The main corporate sponsor is cooperage Seguin Moreau in addition to KSBY and Wine Business Monthly as the Media sponsors. For more information, contact Peter Price at (805) 610-6060 or [email protected].
