MIDLIFE CRISIS WINERY A Knack for Producing Quality Wine Inspired a Passion Pursued By Dave Wilcox
I
t’s impossible to say Midlife Crisis Winery without smiling a little bit. Most of us at some point have daydreamed about chucking it all and pursuing our passion. Actually, Kevin and Jill Mittan didn’t chuck it all. They’ve still got their day jobs. They have, however, successfully pursued their passion of making wine. A typical weekend begins with the couples’ two Australian Shepherds, Roo and Sydney, jumping into the back of Jill’s Subaru Forrester and the foursome makes the 3-1/2-hour drive from the San Fernando Valley to Paso Robles. Often, Jill will be pouring Midlife Crisis wines at a tasting event, while Kevin is tending to business in Paso Robles. Or vice-versa. A booming real estate market in 2004 triggered a whirlwind three months during which the Mittans transformed their winemaking hobby in the garage of their suburban Los Angeles home into a Paso Robles winery. In the space of about 90 days, the couple sold their home, found a smaller residence in the L.A. area, found 22 acres in Paso Robles and became a bonded winery. By September 2004, the Midlife Crisis

Winery had its first crush and, as the Mittan’s say on their fun website, “second thoughts were not an option anymore!” “If we stopped to take a breath during that time,” Kevin Mittan reflected recently, “I don’t know what we would’ve done.” Both Kevin and Jill work in the postproduction world of the entertainment industry — “definitely in the background,” says Kevin — and neither saw themselves working the same jobs for the next 30 years. If not a full-fledged mid-life crisis, Kevin said they asked themselves, “What do we want to do with the rest of our lives?” “Both of us knew we really wanted to do something in retirement.” As home winemakers, the couple developed an unmistakable knack for producing quality wine. Those garage wines earned more than 60 regional and international awards, including a gold medal at the Mid-State Fair. Much of the fruit they used was sourced from the Paso Robles area, so they looked to this region when they decided to start a winery. “We’ve always liked the wines from up here,” said Kevin, sitting in the Midlife Crisis tasting room in downtown Paso Robles, less than a block from the city’s park. “There’s so www.winecountrythisweek.com
much really good, quality fruit in the Paso Robles area.” The winery continues to use Paso Robles grapes exclusively in for all their varietals, which range from Zinfandel, Syrah, Sangiovese, Merlot and Barbera to Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay. So, about the name? Mittan credits his brother-in-law. The couple’s homemade wine was bottled under a label bearing the name Vanalden – the street where they lived at the time. That was out. They also ruled out any permutations of their own names. “Chateau This” or “Villa That” didn’t appeal to them, either. In the midst of their decision-making, Jill’s brother sent an email saying essentially if you’re going through a mid-life crisis “wouldn’t sports cars have been cheaper.” The idea stuck. It’s certainly memorable, but the whimsical name doesn’t mean the Mittans aren’t serious about winemaking. “We knew we’d have to prove ourselves because of the funny name of the winery,” said Kevin. Prove themselves they have, with Midlife

Crisis wines winning multiple honors and – perhaps more importantly – selling briskly. The 2004 vintage – the winery’s first – is sold out. Like most good winemakers, the Mittans know it’s impossible to produce quality wine using inferior fruit. They seek out proven vineyards to ensure top-notch grapes. “What we really try to do is let the wine make itself as much as possible.” That said, Kevin Mittan believes in making fruit-forward wines that are drinkable earlier. He tells the story of a person who insisted that one of Mid-Life’s 2004 wines was a 2002 vintage. Of course, Midlife Crisis didn’t get bonded until 2004. Midlife Crisis features a robust blend bottled under the label Roo Boy Red made with Petite Sirah, Merlot and Tempranillo. “When people try it they’re pretty blown away,” Mittan said of the wine, which is named for one of the Mittans’ two Australian Shepherds. On the other end of the spectrum is a Pinot Grigio, which Mittan said he makes in a fashion that surprises most tasters with a creamy, vanilla coconut finish, while retaining the crispness typical of the varietal. The Mittans jump-started the winery in 2004, producing 800 cases. That number grew to 1,500 with the 2005 vintage and 2,200 in 2006. “We’re trying to get to 5,000 cases as soon as we can,” said Kevin. They want to remain hands-on winemakers. The winery’s spacious tasting room is in the midst of Paso Robles’ resurgent downtown, with a number of well-reviewed restaurants within easy strolling distance. The city park – which hosts, among other events, the annual Paso Robles Wine Festival – is usually busy on the weekends. Walls in the tasting room feature local artists’ work that are for sale and a handful of tables are available for visitors to relax. The tasting room is at 1244 Pine Street, Suite A, and is open every Thursday to Monday from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. You can get more information by calling (805) 237-8730, or visiting the Midlife Crisis Winery website at www.midlifecrisiswinery.com. www.winecountrythisweek.com

EOS – Quality Wines at a Unique Destination
L
ocated in the premier growing region of Paso Robles, the EOS Estate Winery has become a leading producer of award-winning varietal wines and a destination spot for travelers. The spectacular 104,000-square-foot Romanesque facility is surrounded by 700 acres of beautiful estate vineyards. It all began with the arrival of Phil and Frank Arciero in the late 1930s from Italy to Southern California as mere boys. Having never spoken English, they worked their way up in the construction industry and eventually started their own construction company in Southern California. In addition, they always enjoyed auto racing and farming, and Frank discovered the Paso Robles area on his trips from the south to the racetrack near Monterey. Paso Robles reminded him of the gently rolling hills of his childhood home south of Rome. From this they began to realize a dream, and in 1982 purchased 200 acres and planted their first vineyard. The Arciero construction company began construction of the winery in 1985, which is modeled after the ancient Benedictine monastery Montecassino in Italy, and one year later, their dream was born. Never content to rest on past accomplishments, in 1996, the Arciero Family along with General Manager and Partner Kerry Vix launched an entirely new winemaking operation within the existing facility: EOS Estate Winery. Eos was the name given to the “Goddess of the Dawn” in Greek mythology. The legend was that every morning Eos lifted the sun over the horizon to start a new day. It symbolizes the dawning of a new era: a return to classical winemaking techniques with a focus on handcrafted traditional quality. The production of EOS wines is unique in many ways. Prior to planting, each vineyard row is deep trenched to the depth of five feet to allow water and roots to effectively penetrate the compacted earth. Proper clonal selection of vines is determined based upon terroir and targeted flavor profile. Throughout the growing season, special attention is paid to leaf removal and crop thinning. Drip irrigation is employed for complete control of limited watering regime for the vines. A 24,000-square-foot, temperature- and humidity-controlled barrel storage facility was built in 1999 to accommodate the winery’s growing number of French and American oak barrels, necessary for the production of world-class wines. All EOS Estate wines are handcrafted by Director of Winemaking Leslie Melendez. Leslie concentrates on producing food-friendly wines that emphasize balance, elegance and pure fruit flavor. One of California’s fastest growing wine brands, the Estate Bottled EOS portfolio includes Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Merlot and two stunning dessert wines – a Late Harvest Moscato called “Tears of Dew” and an Estate

Zinfandel Port – both with award-winning packaging. Available since 1997, EOS wines have already garnered significant awards. Most recently the EOS 2004 Zinfandel received a Gold medal and 94 points, while the EOS 2006 “Tears of Dew” Late Harvest Moscato received a Double Gold medal, Best of Class Region and 98 points, both in the 2007 California State Fair Wine Competition. In 2000, the EOS line expanded with the introduction of the EOS “Cupa Grandis” Grand Barrel Reserve program. Featuring grapes sourced from the top EOS Estate Chardonnay and Petite Sirah vineyard blocks, the wines are handcrafted using the world’s finest cooperage. The Cupa Grandis Chardonnay is fermented and aged in 100-percent new Louis Latour French oak, considered one of the finest in the world, and the Petite Sirah uses a selection of barrels from specific forests in France and America, chosen by Leslie Melendez. The Cupa Grandis line has received numerous awards and accolades. The Cupa Grandis 2003 Chardonnay received 93 points /Taster’s Choice Selection, and was called “One of the Top 10 California Chardonnay’s of 2005” in The Wine News. The Cupa Grandis 2003 Petite Sirah received 94 points and a gold medal in the 2007 California State Fair Wine Competition and 93 points in the August issue of Wine & Spirits magazine. All of these world-class wines can be tasted in the expansive EOS tasting room – known as the “Mediterranean Marketplace” – at 5626 Highway 46 West in Paso Robles. Visitors can enjoy old-world ambiance while surveying the unique, carefully selected collection of gourmet foods, fine gifts and a surprising racing car exhibit. Beyond the tasting room there are lovely rose gardens, stately Italian architecture, and lush picnic areas to explore, as well as fascinating, selfguided tours of the wine production facility. The tasting room is open daily 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (10 a.m. to 6 p.m. summer weekends). For more information, visit www.eosvintage.com or call 1-800-249-WINE (9463) for information.

BAILEYANA, tangent One Roof, Very Different Wines by Dave Wilcox Like a sibling in a family full of high achievers, the Sauvignon Blanc being produced by Baileyana Winery needed to carve out its own identity. That, in a nutshell, is what inspired third-generation Edna Valley grape-growing pioneers John Niven and Michael Blaney to create tangent. “Our Sauvignon Blanc is fabulous,” said Niven, the grandson of Jack and Catharine Niven, among the first to plant wine grapes in the Edna Valley more than 30 years ago. But, he said, “it sort of was the ‘red-headed step-child’ ” among the Baileyana lineup. “We were so passionate about the wine, we felt that it needed to be its own star.” Such is the stuff of inspiration. With Sauvignon Blanc as the flagship carrying the banner proclaiming “life

beyond Chardonnay,” Niven, Blaney and winemaker Christian Roguenant created tangent, producing nothing but alternative white varietals bottled under screwcap to showcase the eight-mile-long Edna Valley’s cool climate and unique soils. “It takes unoakened Chardonnay to a whole next level,” said Niven. Not that Niven has anything against Chardonnay. On the contrary, Chardonnay has been Baileyana’s focus since Niven’s grandmother, Catharine Niven, planted a 3.5-acre vineyard in her front yard and founded the winery. And Chardonnay remains an integral part of the winery’s identity. Indeed, Baileyana and tangent co-exist as separate, but equal brands under one roof, each highly focused with its own unique identity. “The two wineries represent an evolution as we take our wine making efforts to www.winecountrythisweek.com
the next level,” said Niven. At Baileyana, the focus is on Grand Firepeak Cuvee: ultra-premium estate Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Syrah from the winery’s Firepeak Vineyard. The vineyard is nestled against Islay Mountain, the last in a chain of seven extinct volcanoes. “Firepeak Vineyard represents over 30 years of grape-growing knowledge” in Edna Valley, said Niven. tangent, as its name suggests, is a departure from Baileyana’s enduring, classical wines. Sleek and sophisticated, tangent’s modern approach to grapegrowing and winemaking complements the Baileyana brand. The stylistic differences are embodied in the respective labels, with Baileyana’s Grand Firepeak Cuvee evoking an oaky warmth, while the tangent bottlings are crisp, clean and fresh. What both have in common, said Niven, is the tradition of Niven family

wines that “over-deliver for the price.” The trio of Grand Firepeak Cuvee offerings are among the best values on the market for estate wines from a designated vineyard. The decision to launch tangent came in 2005. At the time, Baileyana was producing nine different wines under its label. “That didn’t really send a clear message of what this winery is all about,” summed up Niven. The family hired Roguenant, who enthusiastically embraced the tangent concept and oversaw construction of the winery’s state-of-the-art production facility. It is especially geared to the production of world-class Pinot Noir (a wine demanding delicate handling) and Syrah. Niven pointed out that local wine lovers devoted to Baileyana’s Edna Valley Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc – and there are legions – will still be able to find it throughout San Luis Obispo County. The Grand Firepeak Cuvee wines are intended for distribution on a statewide national, and international scale. The Baileyana and tangent tasting room is located at the restored historic one-room Independence Schoolhouse built in 1909 at 5828 Orcutt Road in San Luis Obispo. WILD COYOTE WINERY Maintaining a Creative Balance
by Dave Wilcox
B
alance is an integral concept in Gianni Manucci’s life, influencing everything from architectural style and his sculpting to the importance he places on family and friends and, finally, to his winemaking. Wild Coyote Winery is a testament to Manucci’s creative balance, providing visitors with a mystical retreat echoing an ancient Southwestern adobe village. It’s a slice of New Mexico on a hillside west of Paso Robles, complete with panoramic views and a secluded courtyard where bed-and-breakfast guests can relax under a star-studded sky. The authentic feel of Wild Coyote’s southwestern style is no accident. Much of the material used in the construction of the tasting room and the five casitas that make up the bed-and-breakfast were brought from New Mexico. That includes the beams and pillars that command attention. Manucci thought he would retire to Taos, New Mexico, but he dreamed of starting a winery and, well, New Mexico isn’t noted for its grape-growing regions. The adobe-style architecture is accented

on the interior mainly with original Native American art Manucci has collected. One of Manucci’s own stone sculptures, called “Spiritual Chief,” sits near the tasting bar. Compact discs featuring Native American music are also displayed for sale, along with some whimsical wine caddies forged from metal and a handful of other items. There is no “gift shop” feel, though, something Manucci wanted to shy away from. “We did not want to have a gift shop environment because it takes away from the family-style here,” he said. “We want an atmosphere where visitors can enjoy wine and good conversation, we don’t just want to www.winecountrythisweek.com
sell a bunch of stuff.” Wild Coyote is truly an estate winery, where Manucci and his wife, Kati, are responsible for the wine from planting to bottling. Only grapes grown on the 15 acres of vineyards – Merlot, Syrah and Zinfandel – are used in making the wine. Besides those three varietals, Wild Coyote also offers a blend called “House of Reds” – the winery’s nickname – a Rosé and a Zinfandel Port. Manucci believes in crafting robust reds, leaving them in oak until they’re what he considers ready – at least 18 months, and often more than two years. Besides some training at UC Davis, Manucci describes himself as a self-taught winemaker. He is passionate about farming and making wine. “The reason I got into the business is to enjoy being a farmer and grow grapes,” said Manucci. “My philosophy is, ‘If you don’t grow the grapes, you shouldn’t make the wine’.” Wild Coyote Estate Winery is located at 3775 Adelaida Road in Paso Robles and is open daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call (805) 610-1311 or visit the website at www.wildcoyote.biz.
WINE COUNTRY THIS WEEK ATTRACTIONS
Central Coast Winemakers to Stand Off at Upcoming Cook-off You be the judge. On Saturday, August 11, people will travel to Paso Robles from all over to cast their votes as more than 30 of the Central Coast’s finest winemakers compete – but not for the “Best Wine Award.” No, this time attendees will vote for the “WinemakerChef” for the evening, as vintners combine their favorite culinary creation with their wines while wooing the attendees for their votes. The event will be held at the newly remodeled River Oaks Hot Springs & Spa. Pasolivo Olive Oil is the major sponsor for the Ninth Annual Winemakers’ Invitational Cook-off, where winemakers, including Opolo Vineyards, Eberle, Justin, Robert Hall, Tobin James and J. Lohr to name a few, will prepare unique culinary cuisine to pair with their favorite wines. “The winemakers love to participate because it breaks from the traditional wine-tasting event,” comments
Josh Yaguda, whose family owns Pasolivo Olive Oil. “They get to showcase their finest wines and compete by cooking a dish that will bring out the greatest of qualities in their wines.” The winemakerchef with the most attendee votes at the end of the evening wins the People’s Choice Award. When asked about some of the delectable food that one might expect at the cook-off, Yaguda laughs, “That’s top secret. The winemaker-chefs prefer not to share what they are preparing in advance because they want to keep their competitive edge.” In addition to the People’s Choice Award, local renowned chefs will also be “tasting and voting” to determine which winemaker-chef will win this year’s coveted Judges’ Award. This sell-out event is expected to draw close to 1,000 attendees. “The word is out about the popularity of this event, so this year, we had to create an event website so people could conveniently purchase tickets online,” says Sally Davis, event chair for the Paso Robles Rotary Club, the host of the event. All proceeds will benefit the Paso Rotary’s Harlow Ford Scholarship Foundation. Over the past 8 years, the Winemakers’ Invitational Cook-off has raised more than $200,000. This year, the Foundation awarded $30,000 to 15 local, graduating high school seniors. The Ninth Annual Winemakers’ Invitational Cook-off will take place at the River Oaks Hot Springs and Spa in Paso Robles from 5 to 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 11. Tickets are $75 per person. To purchase tickets or for more information, call (805) 226-5674 or visit www.winemakerscookoff.com.

Preferred Tasting Room:
GREY WOLF CELLARS by Mark Storer
H
ighway 46 West through Paso Robles is a dream, as John Steinbeck might have said. It winds across the Templeton Gap punctuated by lush vineyards and mighty oak trees on hillsides that seem to go on forever. The wine that’s grown here is special, too – and not just because of the scenery, but because of the families that call this place home. Joe Barton’s Grey Wolf Cellars is a testament to “the gap” as home. The Grey Wolf tasting room is unassuming, at best, from the outside. Sitting atop a smallish driveway entrance, an old farmhouse looks to the south. Joe has been in the process of sprucing up the place a little, adding on a new beautiful concrete patio to replace the weather worn and outdated wooden deck. More good reviews means more customers – and more customers need more space. Grey Wolf, while still a small boutique winery, is making world-class wine in a place that feels very much like that Barton family living room. Inside, dark wooden floors creak beautifully as you head to the bar that sits astride the kitchen and the living room. Barton
16
family portraits and Grey Wolf memorabilia adorn the space and a friendly, helpful pouring staff sees to it that the customers don’t go thirsty. After the death of his father, it fell to Joe to keep Grey Wolf going and he has succeeded beyond, perhaps, his own expectations. The tasting room, literally a beautiful wooden bar in a living room of an old farmhouse, is the place to taste Grey Wolf’s amazing Zinfandels and Syrahs as well as the table red wine that keeps winning awards, a blend that Joe does himself at his own whim. Like any boutique winery, the heart of www.winecountrythisweek.com
Grey Wolf is the wine club. In joining the pack, wine lovers get to indulge in any number of Barton’s creations over the course of a year. The wine club assures fans of the wine that they will get to taste just about everything they want to before it sells out, though Barton has upped production a bit over the past year to ensure that he is able to keep a thirsty pack well quaffed. But the real success of small wineries is exactly that; Grey Wolf’s small and manageable size helps Barton keep his hand in all levels of wine-making and so, every bottle has the indelible stamp of its maker on it. The tasting room is an extension of that very idea. The small farmhouse with the large Barton family portrait over the fireplace reminds customers and tourists that Grey Wolf is not just a wine company’s name – it’s a way of life, a family dedicated to making great wine and treating its customers like they, too, were part of the pack. Grey Wolf Cellars is located at 2174 Highway 46 West in Paso Robles. Tasting hours are from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily. For more information, call (805) 237-0771 or visit www.greywolfcellars.com.

Paso Robles WestFest 2007 O CALIF RNIA
46 WEST
WestFest 2007 is the fourth annual Wine and Blues Festival, with major sponsorship from Hampton Inns and Suites, Grapeline Express, Canyon Villa Bed & Breakfast, and Farm Credit West, Fog Catcher Inn and Best Western Fireside Inn, which is produced by the Hwy 46 West Wineries in Paso Robles, California. The event this year will be held Saturday, September 8th at Peachy Canyon Winery located off of Highway 46 West on Bethel Road. Your ticket entitles you to wine club discounts at all participating wineries for the entire weekend, and admission to the festival to hear Rockin’ Blues. The centerpiece of the weekend is the festival where each winery will pour their awardwinning wines. Your ticket also becomes your raffle number for great gifts including two six-liter wine bottles etched and hand-painted with the WestFest logo. Over three hundred guests coming from as far away as Washington State attended the first annual event. The event has limited seating and tickets are sold in advance by the participating wineries. Time, price, food and entertainment to be announced.
About Highway 46 West Wineries Group In 2004, thirteen wineries on Highway 46 West formed the Highway 46 West Wineries Group. This group was formed to promote the tasting rooms of the beautiful west side and to make people aware of the uniqueness of 46 West and the wines produced there. Paso Robles Wine Country is as unique and inviting as the people who have dedicated themselves to nurturing the vineyards and crafting fine wines. Visitors to Highway 46 West find the road less traveled is often marked by the thrill of discovery in this uncongested region. It’s an area where hospitality is first among a long list of qualities … where being friends and neighbors is as important as producing stellar wines. Highway 46 West is one thread that weaves among the vineyards and wineries connecting longtime estates with exciting new producers. Rolling hills, majestic oaks and lush vineyards await the wine lover at every turn. The tasting rooms of Highway 46 West invite you to enjoy our neighborhood, relax under the spell of our friendly environment and savor life while sipping our spectacular wines. The participating wineries consist of Brian Benson Cellars, Castoro Cellars, Dark Star Cellars, Doce Robles, Eagle Castle, Fratelli Perata, Grey Wolf, Hunt Cellars, JanKris Winery, Midnight Cellars, Peachy Canyon, Windward Vineyard and Rotta Winery and are all included on the 46 West Passport. The passport is your map to the Westside, including descriptions and hours for each winery. Just like a travel passport you will get a unique stamp from each winery. Once you get seven stamps you will receive a beautifully designed poster of all the participating wineries labels. When your passport is full with all thirteen stamps, your gift is another poster signed by all of the winemakers and entry into a quarterly drawing for prizes from a weekend stay at one of the groups hotel sponsors to a guided tasting tour. Throughout the year the group puts on other events such as Tax Revolt Weekend and West Fest. West Fest is the big event of the year. All thirteen wineries come together to pour great wines while guests listen to blues music and enjoy delicious food from local caterers. For more information, check out the 46 West Wineries website at www.paso46westwineries.com.

WINE COUNTRY THIS WEEK PASO ROBLES
Discover the Unique and Friendly Hansen Vineyards Thirteen years ago, when Bruce and Sheila Hansen first planted their land in Templeton with wine grapes , they had a vision of a small boutique winery, offering ultra-premium handmade wines, lovingly produced in small lots. Today, that vision has come true and visitors from all over the world have discovered this unique and thoroughly friendly family-owned and operated winery. This is the type of winery where you can actually get first-hand information about the wines directly from the owner/winemaker. Bruce, a former general contractor built the tasting room himself and designed it to be a warm and welcoming place where people could enjoy his award-winning wines and not feel as though they were just one of a crowd. He delights in showing visitors around the rustic redwood bat-and-board tasting room that was just completed three years ago. The building is surrounded by a charming picnic area, perfect for relaxing between tasting stops or enjoying a leisurely
lunch on a sunny Central Coast day. Bruce and Sheila love pouring their fabulous Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Cabernet Franc and Malbec for visitors, as well as their new Viognier. Hansen wines have won several awards lately and they are justly proud of their product. “I made wine with my dad when I was a kid. I love the creativity involved with the process and of course, I love the wine!” says Bruce. The tasting room is open weekends from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and is located at 5575 El Pomar Drive in Templeton. For more information, call (805) 239-8412 or visit www.hansenvineyard.com.

Cellar Door has announced the launch of Hayman & Hill Interchange, a new white blend from Santa Barbara County. Interchange represents the natural flow between nature’s elements and the art of winemaking. The 2006 Interchange features a blend of aromatic white varietals from Santa Barbara County’s diverse landscape, and is the latest in Hayman & Hill’s venture to create single-appellation wines produced from California’s top winegrowing regions. “Interchange symbolizes many things,” said Rebecca Stead, Marketing Manager for Cellar Door wines. “It is the winemaker’s careful hand over the winemaking journey; the cooling flow of mild coastal breezes through hillside vineyards; the subtle hint of pineapple aromas in the glass from distinct parcels of land. Interchange discovers what’s new on the horizon, which in this case, is the magnificent Santa Barbara County.” “Our aim is to produce wines that are authentic expressions of their varietal type from the appellations we love best,” said David Hayman, Hayman & Hill Winemaker. “They hit a sweet spot at $13.99 and deliver top quality. For Interchange, we traveled off the beaten track, and found just what we were looking for in the diverse terrain of Santa Barbara County. We set our sights on a white blend that packs a punch of intense fruit with effortless balance and finesse. A lick of oak and careful barrel fermentation delivers a
