WINERY FEATURE WINE COUNTRY THIS WEEK
OPOLO VINEYARDS by Dave Wilcox
W
hen Rick Quinn bought some property on Paso Robles’ east side in 1995 and planted a vineyard, he simply wanted to make sure his home winemaking hobby always had a reliable source. The vineyard, which normally supplied him with Merlot grapes, came up short that year, Quinn recalled, and he decided “that won’t happen again.” From that modest start sprouted Opolo, one of Paso Robles’ most popular wineries which has earned a reputation as a place to taste superb wine and have a great time. Opolo is owned by Quinn and Dave Nichols, Quinn’s neighbor in Southern California who bought vineyard property adjoining Quinn’s on the east side of Paso Robles. Together, they now own about 300 acres, including approximately 100 on the west side of Paso Robles, where the hillside winery and tasting room are located on a picturesque country road. The original business plan, drawn up by the pair, envisioned growing grapes and selling them to winemakers. They didn’t
8
intend to make wine commercially. That changed as they saw more and more acres planted to grapes. Quinn joked that he “slept through my econ classes in college,” but he still understood supply and demand. With vineyards sprouting across the landscape, he decided starting a winery would be a good “insurance policy.” Turned out to be something more than that. Opolo’s first vintage, 1999, sold out 1,000 cases in about three months, said Quinn. The following year, 5,000 cases sold out in the same time. Since then, Opolo has steadily increased its annual production to approximately 40,000 cases. “We didn’t know what to expect,” Nichols recalled, “but we didn’t expect that.” Quinn and Nichols share the winemaking responsibilities along with consultant Robert Nadeau. Their “winemaking by committee” philosophy ensures quality year after year. “Opolo is fun,” said Quinn. “We’re making wine more user-friendly. People don’t need to be intimidated. When people come through the door, they have a great experience.” www.winecountrythisweek.com
Visitors to the warehouse-style tasting room quickly establish an easy rapport with whoever is pouring that day, whether it be one of the winemakers, or a friendly employee. While the winery’s production has steadily increased in the eight years since its first release, Nichols said there are no immediate plans to continue that kind of growth. “We’re at the limit of what our facilities can accommodate.” Plus, he said, both men are determined to remain hands-on winemakers, controlling the fruit source from vineyard to bottle. “We’re the farmers,” said Nichols. “We’re in control of the grapes.” Opolo’s signature wines are a series of fullbodied, fruit-forward Zinfandels made with fruit sourced from westside vineyards. They also produce a velvety, dessert-style Late Harvest Zinfandel that pairs well with chocolate. “People really enjoy the style of wine that we make,” acknowledged Nichols. Curiosity mixed with a sense of adventure motivates Opolo’s owners to produce more than two dozen types of wine, including a few unusual blends.

“We haven’t met a (varietal) grape we haven’t liked,” mused Nichols. Wine club members appreciate the novelty as well, he said. “It makes it fun, because they’re not always getting the same thing over and over again.” Among the wines bottled by Opolo are a Spanish-Italian coupling of Tempranillo and Nebbiolo and another blend featuring Sangiovese and Barbera. Opolo’s staples include “Fusion,” a blend that marries Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot and “Rhapsody,” a Maritage made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc grapes harvested from Opolo’s east side vineyards and Merlot and Cabernet Franc fruit from the west side. Don’t get the idea, however, that Opolo is a reds-only house. Using grapes grown in the Santa Ynez Valley region of northern Santa Barbara County, Quinn and Nichols make a Viognier and Roussanne. Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay are also produced by the winery. Special events at the winery are popular, thanks in part to the relaxed atmosphere fostered there and also the scrumptious barbecued meal typically served. With a nod to Quinn’s Serbian heritage, whole roasted lamb, cooked over an open pit, is a mainstay. Alternatively, guests can munch carne asada tacos and beans with all of the fixings. Guests gather on a spacious plateau offering sweeping views of the vineyards, along with walnut groves and coast live oaks in the distance. With the right timing, you might also take in a spectacular sunset. Next on the calendar is Opolo’s Labor Day Weekend Barbecue, on September 1 and 2. Lunch is $10 and wine tasting an additional $5. Free to wine club members. No reservations are needed. Opolo Winery is on Vineyard Drive, a shade less than five miles north from Highway 46 West. The tasting room is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 7110 Vineyard Drive. Call (805) 238-9593 for more information, or visit www.opolo.com. www.winecountrythisweek.com

Jake, Josh and Doug Beckett
PEACHY CANYON WINERY W
hen Doug and Nancy Beckett, a couple of school teachers looking for a better life, moved to Paso Robles in 1982 with their two sons, Joshua and Jacob, they never new the life they would lead today. The labels start came in 1988, thanks to a load of Zinfandel grapes from Benito Dusi’s vineyard. Though only amounting to a couple hundred cases, the premiere release centered the label’s reputation for premium red wines. Today, the Becketts brand has become nationally distributed in 49 states and select international destinations. This coming year production is set for 84,000 cases, their largest production yet. In order to secure premium fruit, Peachy Canyon sources grapes from over twenty local growers in the Paso Robles AVA and 100 acres of their own vineyards. The winery is still headed by founding vintners Doug and Nancy, as well as the family’s second generation. After years away from home, both Josh and Jake returned to Paso Robles and Peachy Canyon to work for the family business. Josh has been with the winery for nine years and has been the winemaker since 2003. Combining his
10
varied experiences with different winemakers and regions, Josh keeps an open mind in order to create the most exciting wines possible. Jake wasn’t able to resist the lure of the family business either. For years, Jake worked as the vineyard manager over-seeing the four Peachy Canyon Vineyards and working with local growers to ensure fruit quality is kept at their high standard. In 2005, Jake wanted to learn other aspects of the business and joined the sales team. Jake now is the General Sales Manager and travels the country promoting the family brand. Although Zinfandels dominate the Peachy Canyon tasting menu, you will find Cabernets, Merlots and special blends that are available to sample. Each wine poses unique characteristics with distinguished qualities and is why the whole Peachy Canyon team works so hard to pick only the best Paso Robles fruit while supporting the local growers. Doug Beckett also makes sure “each wine is released in the peak of its youth,” the Becketts feel they give their customers the choice to either enjoy the wines young or cellar them for a later date. The Becketts invite you to join them this www.winecountrythisweek.com
coming Harvest Festival for the 3rd Annual Pumpkin Carving contest on October 20, 2007 at the Peachy Canyon Winery located on Lake Nacimiento Road. Bring your family and enjoy great prizes, music, dinner and wine! Party begins at 4 p.m. at the Peachy Canyon Winery; $60 club members and $75 non-club members. For more information or to buy your tickets, call 1-800-315-7908. If you can’t make it to the Pumpkin Carving contest, stop by one of their two tasting rooms throughout the weekend to sample great wines paired with tasty treats. The Old School House Tasting Room is at the corner of Bethel Road and Highway 46 West. The quaint landmark attraction dates back to 1886 and is surrounded by a large grassed picnic area and gazebo. The facility can be rented out for private events and is a perfect locale for an outdoor wedding amidst the vineyards. The Peachy Too Tasting Room is located on 2020 Nacimiento Lake Drive. Peachy Too is housed in a charming Swiss Chateau about four miles west of Highway 101 and is open weekends only. Visit www.peachycanyon.com for more information.

PAVE 4 cups of manufactured cream 2 lbs. 12 ounces shaved chocolate 1 -1/2 oz. Black Monukka Figs
Rotta Black Monukka Perfectly Paired with Pave You are not likely to find the Black Monukka grape mentioned anywhere in a wine book. That’s because it is a raisin grape seldom used to make wine. But the winemaker at Paso Robles’ historic Rotta Winery saw Sherry-style dessert wine potential in the grape’s relatively high-fructose level and unique flavors. Unique as well, was their vision to allow the intense Paso Robles sun to “bake” the wine as it ages for two years in French oak barrels – outdoors! Slow evaporation of the wine, without refilling the barrels, intensifying the wine’s richness. The end result is a true handcrafted wine of unmatched smoothness, with distinctive caramel, nutty and vanilla flavors and aromas. “We are the only producers of dessert Sherry in the U.S. to use this varietal,” explains Barbara Milburn, Rotta Winery Tasting Room Manager. “It has won countless awards, including Double Gold, Best of Class, Gold and the Jefferson Cup.” Taking the dessert Sherry wine to the next step is Chef Matthew Riley, who owns two restaurants in Paso Robles. The original “Matthew’s” is located at the quaint and stylish Paso Robles Regional Airport, while his second, opened in 2007, is conveniently situated in the heart of downtown. A California native, and beloved Paso Robles resident, Chef Matthew knows grapes, both table and wine varieties, and creates a simple yet impressionable dessert with the 2003 Rotta Black Monukka Dessert Wine. His creative recipe, Pave paired with Rotta Black Monukka, marries the sweet, nutty richness of the dessert wine with the sumptuousness of melted shaved chocolate mixed with boiled cream and topped with figs. Rotta Winery, founded in 1908, is the oldest originally family-owned winery in San Luis Obispo County. The original vineyard and winery were started in 1856 by a Frenchman named Adolph Siot, who later sold the successful enterprise to Joe Rotta in 1908. Today, the Rotta label is being revived by one of their grandsons, Michael Giubbini, who, in 1990, replanted the old family vineyard mostly to Zinfandel. The Rotta tasting room is located in Templeton, open daily 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at “Cider Creek” on Highway 46 West, just east of Vineyard Drive.

San Andreas West Wines – Meeting the Needs of Small Wineries by Janis Switzer For small lot, boutique wineries that don’t have a tasting room, a sales force or the ability to capture the attention of a major distributor, there is another option to get their names and wines out in the marketplace. San Andreas West Wines calls itself “a boutique wine distributor,” and can help a small winery with a range of services. Bill Bogue founded the business in 2004, initially as a hobby to help his daughter and son-in-law. It turned into a solid business venture as the number of small wineries on the Central Coast grew over the past few years, and he saw the special needs of fine, boutique wineries going unmet. Bogue enlisted his three daughters to form the core of the business. Tracy brought nine years of tasting room management experience to her role as director of sales; Kimber, a web specialist with 20 years of customer service experience, heads up the sales department; and Robin, a graphics artist, has developed all the marketing materials, and along with her husband Jim, provides logistics and assists in day-today operations. The firm currently represents nine wineries from the Santa Barbara, Edna Valley and Paso Robles areas, including Cayucos Cellars, Madison Cellars, Pozo Valley and William James Cellars. Their reach extends to more than 100 wine shops and restaurants – also mostly on the Central Coast – and they are looking for both new wineries to represent, and new accounts to sell those wines. Their proposition is simple: “We can go out and be your face in the market,” Tracy explains. “Especially when it’s a mom-and-pop operation, it’s really difficult for them to even know who to talk to at one of the big, national distributors.” San Andreas West’s goal is to simplify that process. They purchase wines at the winery’s wholesale price, and re-sell it to retail and restaurant outlets with a mark-up that depends on factors such as volume and price point. In addition to picking up and distributing the wines, they can represent the winery at pouring events, introduce the wines to publi-
cations such as Wine Spectator and Wine Enthusiast, and set up wine tasting dinners, cross-marketing local restaurants and wineries. “We’re out tooting their horn, and basically providing a service that they either don’t want to do themselves, or don’t have the time to do themselves,” Tracy says. Their target client generally produces less than 5,000 cases a year, and often lacks a tasting room that provides a sales outlet for most of that production. Robin and her husband Jim Porter, owners of William James Cellars in Santa Maria, are typical clients. With production of 3,800 cases a year, they are too small to get attention from a large distributor, and yet produce too much to sell themselves without a tasting room. San Andreas West provides the feet on the street to get their wines into restaurants and wine stores. With an emphasis on personal service, the family intends to keep the business intimate, but they are currently also looking to grow the business. “Our goal is to grow the number of wineries we represent, and also to grow the accounts we sell to,” Tracy explains. They are expecting to open a new office and warehouse facility in Santa Maria in the very near future to accommodate that growth, and to provide a central meeting place for the family’s meetings. For more information contact, Tracy Bogue at (805) 260-6518 or go to www.sanandreaswestwines.com.

Preferred Tasting Room:
COSTA DE ORO by Dave Wilcox
F
orty acres of strawberry fields, not vineyards, are what visitors see through the picture window of the Costa de Oro Winery’s tasting room. That’s no coincidence. The tasting room is part of the Gold Coast Marketplace, where an array of fresh produce and gourmet foods are available along with Costa de Oro’s award-winning wines. There’s even a drive-through window for purchasing strawberries. “It’s definitely not your typical wine-tasting stop,” said Clay Frick, who, along with his wife, Joanne, is part-owner and manager of Gold Coast Marketplace. Gold Coast Marketplace, which opened a year ago, is an attractive shop with exposed wooden beams and earth tones exuding warmth. A stone fruit’s throw from Highway 101 in Santa Maria, its easy accessibility attracts both travelers just passing through and wine enthusiasts launching a day of tasting along the Foxen Canyon wine trail. “We have everything you need for a day of wine tasting,” said Joanne Frick, including gourmet cheeses and artisan bread. Gold Coast boasts fresh, locally grown produce and flowers typically only available

at farmers’ markets. Artichokes from Lompoc, avocados from Santa Maria, roses from Nipomo. Just outside the market is the “produce patio,” where shoppers can pick up anything from onions and garlic to lettuce and tomatoes. Sure, the shopping’s great, but Costa de Oro’s wines are reason enough to visit. Winemaker Gary Burk’s craftsmanship has earned plaudits from wine critics and a number of awards, including Best in Show at both the Orange and Santa Barbara County fairs. Costa de Oro – Spanish for Gold Coast – www.winecountrythisweek.com
uses estate-grown fruit to produce Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Thirty acres of bluff-top vineyards were planted by Burk’s father, Ron, and his Gold Coast Farms partner, Robert Espinola, when they found the well-drained, sandy loam soil ill-suited for vegetables. It was, however, ideal for the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes. Costa de Oro also produces Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Rosè and Syrah. Tasting room visitors on weekends have a chance to sample reserve vintages that are part of the winery’s library collection. About 7,500 cases of the Costa de Oro label are produced annually, with Burk making the wine at Santa Maria’s Central Coast Wine Services. The marriage of Gold Coast Farm’s strawberries and Burk’s winemaking talents will come to fruition this year with the release of Costa de Oro strawberry dessert wine, according to Frick. The Gold Coast Marketplace and Costa de Oro wine tasting room are open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. It is on the east side of Highway 101. Use the Stowell Road off-ramp traveling either north or south.

Preferred Tasting Room:
ARTISTE WINERY A
rtiste Winery and Tasting Studio transports one to a working art studio in the 1870s, the height of the Impressionist movement. Modeled after Hotel Baudy, the tiny inn in Giverny, France, where the Impressionism movement kicked into high gear, Artiste invites its guests to step back in time with an old-world art studio décor. Enjoy paintings from some of today’s best Impressionist painters, use the community canvases to create a masterpiece of your own and, all the while, taste some of the most Avant-Garde wines California has to offer. The Artiste story began with winemaker, Bion Rice, whose vision of becoming one of the world’s finest cuvee wine producers led him down the path that would eventually bring the two worlds of art and wine together like never before. Bion discovered his passion for winemaking early on at his family’s Sunstone Winery, where he honed his skills at assemblage, the art of blending wines together to yield distinctly complex cuvees of balance, grace and power.
16
Now, with those skills as his tool belt and California as his palette, Bion selects the vintages and varietals that hold the nuances and characteristics he needs to create his next wine, each one a unique vision itself. Like an Impressionist painter who uses individual, www.winecountrythisweek.com
visible brushstrokes to create a final masterpiece, Bion uses each wine as a brushstroke in the final blend. The ultimate goal? To produce infinitely beautiful cuvees that are much more than merely the sum of their parts, ones that exhibit the best aromas, flavors and sensations of each individual wine that went into the blend. Drawing on old-world blending traditions while adding an unmistakable swath of California style, Bion creates neo-classical blends they call “Impressionist Cuvees.” The Toretta, now a library wine, draws on the style of Barbaresco, Italy, with the powerful Nebbiolo varietal forming the base of the blend, while the Artiste touch adds Merlot, Cabernet Franc and a hint of Barbera to transform the wine into something totally unique. The winemaker’s unwavering insistence on quality ensures that lots remain small, with none of the wines above the 300-case production level, and some as low as 50. And yet another feature makes all of Artiste wines See Artiste, page 26

Paso Robles WestFest 2007 O CALIF RNIA
46 WEST
WestFest 2007 is the fourth annual Wine and Blues Festival, with major sponsorship from Hampton Inns and Suites, Grapeline Express, Canyon Villa Bed & Breakfast, and Farm Credit West, Fog Catcher Inn and Best Western Fireside Inn, which is produced by the Hwy 46 West Wineries in Paso Robles, California. The event this year will be held Saturday, September 8th at Peachy Canyon Winery located off of Highway 46 West on Bethel Road. Your ticket entitles you to wine club discounts at all participating wineries for the entire weekend, and admission to the festival to hear Rockin’ Blues. The centerpiece of the weekend is the festival where each winery will pour their awardwinning wines. Your ticket also becomes your raffle number for great gifts including two six-liter wine bottles etched and hand-painted with the WestFest logo. Over three hundred guests coming from as far away as Washington State attended the first annual event. The event has limited seating and tickets are sold in advance by the participating wineries. Time, price, food and entertainment to be announced.
About Highway 46 West Wineries Group In 2004, thirteen wineries on Highway 46 West formed the Highway 46 West Wineries Group. This group was formed to promote the tasting rooms of the beautiful west side and to make people aware of the uniqueness of 46 West and the wines produced there. Paso Robles Wine Country is as unique and inviting as the people who have dedicated themselves to nurturing the vineyards and crafting fine wines. Visitors to Highway 46 West find the road less traveled is often marked by the thrill of discovery in this uncongested region. It’s an area where hospitality is first among a long list of qualities … where being friends and neighbors is as important as producing stellar wines. Highway 46 West is one thread that weaves among the vineyards and wineries connecting longtime estates with exciting new producers. Rolling hills, majestic oaks and lush vineyards await the wine lover at every turn. The tasting rooms of Highway 46 West invite you to enjoy our neighborhood, relax under the spell of our friendly environment and savor life while sipping our spectacular wines. The participating wineries consist of Brian Benson Cellars, Castoro Cellars, Dark Star Cellars, Doce Robles, Eagle Castle, Fratelli Perata, Grey Wolf, Hunt Cellars, JanKris Winery, Midnight Cellars, Peachy Canyon, Windward Vineyard and Rotta Winery and are all included on the 46 West Passport. The passport is your map to the Westside, including descriptions and hours for each winery. Just like a travel passport you will get a unique stamp from each winery. Once you get seven stamps you will receive a beautifully designed poster of all the participating wineries labels. When your passport is full with all thirteen stamps, your gift is another poster signed by all of the winemakers and entry into a quarterly drawing for prizes from a weekend stay at one of the groups hotel sponsors to a guided tasting tour. Throughout the year the group puts on other events such as Tax Revolt Weekend and West Fest. West Fest is the big event of the year. All thirteen wineries come together to pour great wines while guests listen to blues music and enjoy delicious food from local caterers. For more information, check out the 46 West Wineries website at www.paso46westwineries.com.

Falcon Nest Winery – Just Like a Trip to Tuscany If you’ve ever had the good fortune to visit a winery in Italy, you know what it’s like to enjoy the combination of great wine, beautiful scenery and most of all, warm and welcoming people. Now you don’t have to endure a 12-hour plane flight to experience the delights of Italy. Falcon Nest Winery is the creation of Francesco Grande and his lovely wife, Carolynn. Francesco was born in Calabria and grew up in the Tuscany region of Italy. Like so many of his fellow countrymen, his passion for food and wine has been the focus of his life. For twenty-eight years he ran a successful and very, very busy restaurant in Los Angeles. It took a long-time friend and customer to convince him that he needed a little vacation. A trip up to the Paso Robles wine-growing region was just supposed to provide a little rest and relaxation. But with only one look at the stunningly beautiful rolling hills of Central California, Francesco knew that it was time for a new challenge. It was time to return to his roots. “Wine has been in my family for centuries. My father was a winemaker, my grandfather was a winemaker as was his father before him and his father before him! In Italy, it is a way of life,” says Francesco. With the gusto he gave to his cooking, Francesco has turned his land into some of the finest vineyards in the area. His picturesque little winery on the top of the hill looks over a seemingly endless sea of vines. He now has fifty-five acres planted in Cabernet, Merlot, Syrah,

Petite Verdot and Zinfandel. “I love the art of cooking, but once the food is on the table, it is soon gone. There is an art to winemaking as well plus it lasts a lot longer. With aging wine becomes better. Food becomes worse!” says Francesco. Francesco has not totally hung up his chef’s apron, though. The tasting room offers an array of his handmade sauces and Italian specialties. Guests are often treated to tasty morsels along side the fine wines of Falcon Nest. ideal location far before anyone else! His role has been the most instrumental to this ‘dream.’” In May of 2005, the work completed, Salisbury opened up the facility under the Salisbury Vineyards name. Now, the old schoolhouse is open for tasting of Salisbury’s wine seven days a week. Jennifer and her husband, Kevin (also a professional skateboarder) work with John Salisbury in maintaining all operations. With their two children and a past filled with varied and diverse career interests like skatepark owners, artists, and now vintners, the two have made a home here in SLO County in this unique facility. The tasting room also has a gallery, Salisbury Fine Art, owned by her mother, Maridel Salisbury and represents more than 150 recognized artists nationally and even internationally. The wines of Salisbury are as varied and diverse as is the family and the tasting room features the family’s Pinot Noir, cool-climate Syrah, Paso Robles Zinfandel, Chardonnay and even some Cabernet. There are some truly unique wines as well, like Pinot Naturale – not quite a rosé of Pinot Noir, but definitely a nice warm-weather sipper.
About Salisbury Vineyards John Salisbury – a farmer and wine-grape grower whose roots go all the way up to the Sacramento Delta area where the Salisbury family has been farming in Walnut Grove, CA since 1850 – began growing grapes in the Paso Robles area in 1997. In 2000, he began renovation on the old Santa Fe schoolhouse, an area landmark and a multiple-use facility for many years. “My father, John, is a great visionary,” says Jennifer 1Rucks, “and could see the schoolhouse as an 101

SANTA BARBARA COUNTY WINE COUNTRY THIS WEEK
Artiste Winery & Tasting Room even more unique: every label is a work of art in and of itself. Artiste works with some of the finest Impressionist artists across the country to commission a painting for every new cuvee, and each wine then takes on the name of the masterpiece that graces its bottle. In the end, it’s the ultimate synthesis of art and wine: a liquid work of art created by a master winemaker within the bottle, and a painted work of art created by a master painter without. Every quarter, Artiste releases new wines featuring new paintings from the artists. Each release opens with an Art & Wine Release Party featuring delicious food paired with the new wines and the entire tasting studio filled with new artwork for the show, along with a

visit from the featured artist to talk about their work and autograph bottles for customers. Throughout the year, Artiste also holds special events such as blending sessions with the winemaker and painting seminars with the resident artist, Christina LoCascio. Stop by the studio in downtown Santa Ynez to find out more and experience the Artiste world of art and wine for yourself!
Upcoming Art & Wine Release Party on Saturday, August 25th Celebrate Argentine Tango with a new exhibit of paintings by artist Aldo Luongo. Savor the flavors of Argentina with authentic cuisine by Café Buenos Aires of Santa Barbara, live music, and tango dancing! Visit
www.Artiste.com for more information and to RSVP.
About Aldo Luongo With talent that led him to be honored as the official Olympic Artist in Seoul and Atlanta (among many other accolades), he creates, in his “space and time”, powerful and spirited work that evokes true emotion. Whether he portrays a romantic enclave, a frenzied sporting event, or a richly textured landscape, central to all of Luongo’s paintings is the balance between memory and hope, sorrow and humor, freedom and control. Artiste Winery and Tasting Room, located at 3569 Sagunto Street in Santa Ynez, is open daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Cellar Door has announced the launch of Hayman & Hill Interchange, a new white blend from Santa Barbara County. Interchange represents the natural flow between nature’s elements and the art of winemaking. The 2006 Interchange features a blend of aromatic white varietals from Santa Barbara County’s diverse landscape, and is the latest in Hayman & Hill’s venture to create single-appellation wines produced from California’s top winegrowing regions. “Interchange symbolizes many things,” said Rebecca Stead, Marketing Manager for Cellar Door wines. “It is the winemaker’s careful hand over the winemaking journey; the cooling flow of mild coastal breezes through hillside vineyards; the subtle hint of pineapple aromas in the glass from distinct parcels of land. Interchange discovers what’s new on the horizon, which in this case, is the magnificent Santa Barbara County.” “Our aim is to produce wines that are authentic expressions of their varietal type from the appellations we love best,” said David Hayman, Hayman & Hill Winemaker. “They hit a sweet spot at $13.99 and deliver top quality. For Interchange, we traveled off the beaten track, and found just what we were looking for in the diverse terrain of Santa Barbara County. We set our sights on a white blend that packs a punch of intense fruit with effortless balance and finesse. A lick of oak and careful barrel fermentation delivers a
