>> Michael Bishop and his colleague Harold Varmus discovered that cancer occurs when normal cellular genes go awry. This discovery, which led to the award of the 1989 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine to Bishop and Varmus, transformed the field of cancer research, UCSF says. The building, which will supplement the ongoing cancer research program at UCSF Mount Zion, will more than double the existing space dedicated to cancer research at UCSF. The new building will house researchers working on the entire gamut of modern cancer research, including studies on cancer prevention; the role of environmental factors and genes that contribute to cancer risk; analysis of tumor suppressors and oncogenes that directly influence the behavior of the cancer cell; discovery of new molecular markers that indicate the existence of cancer; its degree of aggressiveness and response to therapy; and, ultimately, new pharmacological, immunotherapy and gene therapies for cancer treatment. “In the construction business, no one serves the healthcare industry with more experience and project leadership than Hunt Construction Group,” the company says. “For more than three decades, our first-class facilities have helped improve the quality of care for thousands of patients worldwide. “At Hunt Construction Group, we envision more than just the physical structure. We see quiet overnight stays, sterile operating rooms, clean laboratories and visitor-friendly facilities. In doing so, we strategically manage all phases of the construction process with the end-result in mind.” A City Within A City In early 2007, Hunt Construction Group began work on the first phase of the CityScape project in Phoenix, which will include a Class-A office tower, retail

space and new underground parking. The first phase is scheduled to be complete at the end of 2009, but when all three phases are finished in 2011, CityScape will have: » A 600,000-square-foot office; » 250,000 square feet of retail ; » Hotel Palomar – totaling 250 rooms » 165 condominiums; » 100,000 total square feet of open space, including Patriot’s Park; and » 3,900 parking spaces. “Hunt is proud to work on such an important project, which will bring a crucial element to the revitalization of downtown Phoenix when it is completed on time and on budget in 36 months,” said Brent Leif, Hunt spokesperson. RED Development LLC selected Hunt Construction to serve as general contractor for the middle block and centerpiece of the project. Located on three blocks in downtown Phoenix, Hunt says, CityScape will play a big role in meeting the demand
for a revitalized downtown area by building a “vibrant component” for the city’s citizens. “CityScape is a landmark private sector investment over three city blocks that are crucial to our downtown revitalization plans,” Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon said in a statement. “It will bring critical mass to the center of our city, paving the way for more shopping and dining options, plus a downtown grocery store. The groundbreaking is a wonderful first step in what will be an exciting and transforming project for downtown Phoenix.” x
