WELCOME BACK

Welcome back to all Bryandalians after the winter break. We hope that all the winter bugs have been laid to rest.

STAFF

Welcome to Mrs. Yeun who has taught here before and has joined the Grade 3 team, as well as Mrs. Grant in Grade 5, who will replace Mrs. Desjardins. Mrs Grant and her two boys have relocated from Mpumalanga. We wish them both a long and happy association with Bryandale. Mr. Chhiba is in a full-time position, looking after our computer network and all things technical. My prayer this term, is that the changes of the past term are positive and that all children receive the best, uninterrupted tuition that we have to offer. Our newly appointed staff members bring with them an air of excitement and commitment that is very positive. Mrs. van Schalkwyk has recovered from her operation and has returned with a bounce in her step. Mrs. Grotius has taken three weeks off before commencing her accouchement leave, which runs until the end of 2006. Her children will be well looked after by Ms. Davenport. Mrs. Groeneveld is back from her accouchement leave, allowing Mrs. Relton to return to her spring garden. Mrs. Moodie who helped while Mrs. van Schalkwyk was away, is replacing Mrs. Stuckenberg. On your behalf, I wish all our staff a healthy, happy and productive term.

SPELLATHON

This has a two-fold objective – to improve spelling and to raise funds. Each child has a list of forty words. These will be learned, applied and memorised ten at a time over the next four weeks. On the fifth week, the entire school will write a spelling test of twenty words. The children’s job is to find sponsors for their words. The range is from two cents a word to two rand plus a word, ensuring that all are able to participate. There is a prize for the overall money winner, for the class who raises the most and for the child in each grade who raises the most amount of money. The sponsorship forms have been sent home and the children have these four weeks to collect sponsorship and learn their words. Each week before the test, the children are asked to guesstimate how much they have

collected and this information will be made known. On the Monday of the final week all sponsorship forms are collected. The expected amount for a 20/20 result is recorded. The test is written and marked, returned on the same day, and the children then have two weeks in which to bring the money in. At the end of this exercise, we hope that all the troublesome words are engrained and will be applied correctly throughout all learning areas.

SCHOOL UNIFORM

A smart kid is such a wonderful advert. Hair neat and simple styles for both boys and girls. Plain gold or silver studs or sleepers for those girls who have to wear earrings. Sports uniform neat, clean and mainly white tackies with a blue trim. White normal ankle socks. Winter uniform worn with pride. There will be an optional period for the change-over of dress from winter to summer. This will be largely dictated by the weather.

PARENT IN PRAYER

In these times it is so good to develop our spiritual value systems. As a predominantly Christian community, I use the command given to us that “we must love one another and our neighbour as ourselves”. In this way all our children can grow spiritually in their own religious persuasions. I thank all our parents for their prayers and know that in a loving, praying community, we can reach our potential as a school. Parents in Prayer is up and running once more. All parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles etc. are welcome to join Mrs. Furst on a Wednesday from 08h00 to 09h00 in Room 3 for a great time of prayer and sharing. “Prayer doesn’t change God, prayer changes us”. C.S. Lewis

CONDOLENCES

Our sincere sympathy goes to Mrs. Groeneveld whose grandmother passed away. Mrs. Wright whose father passed away and to Mrs. Marchant on the loss of her husband and son Seth, a student in 6B, in a motor accident. Leah in Grade 2V is recovering and out of hospital and we hope baby Joel will recover fully. He is still in the Red Cross Children’s hospital in Cape Town. We remembered Seth in our Wednesday morning assembly.

CODE OF CONDUCT

Notes of absenteeism are essential.

DIETARY BITES

What is the Glycemic Index (GI)? The GI is the rate that glucose is being released into the blood stream after eating carbohydrate containing food. It is better to choose lower GI foods as this sustain energy for longer and enhances concentration levels. Low GI foods can sustain energy for up to 3 hours. Examples of lower GI foods – dairy products, legumes, rolled oats, seed bread, durum wheat pasta, basmati rice, brown rice, corn-on-the-cob, high fibre cereals etc.
