INTER-HOUSE ATHLETICS

Thank you to all the parents who attended and well done to Highland, who won, yet again and to Grosvenor who won the Esprit de Corps Trophy. Congratulations to Kyle Winter who was Victor Ladorum and to Maxine Holl and Nombuioselo Gubevu, who shared the Victrix Ladorum. I have had a number of requests that we go back to our coloured house T-shirts. This is certainly possible. We went the sports kit route to cut costs for you, the parent. Any objections to the coloured house T-shirts should be addressed to me. These shirts will be used for all inter-house competitions, but will not replace the Bryandale sports shirt.

BULLYING POLICY

It is known as our “HURTFUL BEHAVIOUR REPORT”. All children who are, or feel they are, being bullied have access to the reports and need to fill them in every time the bullying occurs. Often children don’t see a change in others straight away and feel that nothing is being done. Behaviour change is sometimes not easily seen but it does not mean that we are not working on it. Respect for others is what we are trying to engender in all children and with rights come responsibilities and with freedom more responsibilities. Please, if your child falls into the category of being bullied, ask them follow through on our process.

ZULU

The Grade Five learners will write their Zulu Test during the week ending 11th August and the Grade Seven learners will write during the week ending 18th August.

2007 INTAKE

We already have approximately 50 children wait-listed for 2007 enrolment. If you already have a child at Bryandale and have another child due to start Grade 1 next year, but haven' t yet put their name down, you are really in trouble. Contact the office to put their names on the waiting list.

PARENTS IN PRAYER

All parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles etc. are welcome to join Mrs. Furst on a Wednesday from 08h00 to 09h00 in Room 3 for a great time of prayer and sharing.

SPELLATHON

This has a two-fold objective – to improve spelling and to raise funds. Each child has a list of forty words. These will be learned, applied and memorised ten at a time over the next four weeks. On the fifth week, the entire school will write a spelling test of twenty words. The children’s job is to find sponsors for their words. The range is from two cents a word to two rand plus a word, ensuring that all are able to participate. There is a prize for the overall money winner, for the class who raises the most and for the child in each grade who raises the most amount of money. The sponsorship forms have been sent home and the children have these four weeks to collect sponsorship and learn their words. Each week before the test, the children are asked to guesstimate how much they have collected and this information will be made known. On the Monday of the final week all sponsorship forms are collected. The expected amount for a 20/20 result is recorded. The test is written and marked, returned on the same day, and the children then have two weeks in which to bring the money in. At the end of this exercise, we hope that all the troublesome words are engrained and will be applied correctly throughout all learning areas.

CODE OF CONDUCT

Bryandalians do not run on corridors and always observe a courteous silence when moving from class to class.

DIETARY BITES

What is the Glycemic Load (GL)? That is the amount of glucose the body has to deal with in a specific time. The larger the amount of glucose the more difficult it is for the body to use the extra glucose and this is then easily turned into fat. It is better to eat smaller portions of food and more regular meals to prevent excess glucose turning into fat.
