BATALLA DE FRIEDLAND
BATTLE OF FRIEDLAND (14 June, 1807) Order Of Battle: Russian Army - Bennigsen Notes to Russian OOB: The Russian OOB for this battle is one of the most difficult to accomplish. First problem is that most oob are based on Heilsberg battle and don’t realize there were many changes for Friedland. For example, in the command structure due to diverse causes, like wounded generals, etc. Strength for each regiment is impossible to get. There are only approximately numbers for the whole army and some division, so the global number has been divided to get the hypothetical battalion strength. The problem is still worse because after Heilsberg there were also many unregistered losses due to stragglers Cavalry distribution in the battle was also a nightmare. The main problem is that Gallitizin was in theory the left wing cavalry commander and it should be with Bagration, and there are mentions that he charged in the left flank, but in fact he was commanding a reserve cavalry in the right flank with Gorchakov since the morning, though later he crossed the river trying to stop the right French attack. Really it was Kollogrivov who commanded the cavalry under Bagration, he was detached from the guard cavalry division. Lastly, the artillery was a big final problem. Though it is known fairly well the Russian artillery distribution in Heilsberg and we can assume it is the same in Friedland, many batteries were left without crossing the Alle River, deployed in reserve, guarding some key points. The problem is that there is no reference to how many and from which divisions were this batteries. Chandler says the Russian had 160 guns in the battle, I suppose after deducting the number left in reserve, because the Russian army had some 396 guns (33 x 12 guns batteries), but it is unclear how he gets that number. 4 batteries were left with its divisions, 14th and Platov column, 3 guard batteries and 1 horse were detached to Allenburg, so we have still 300 guns that could have crossed the Alle River. So I have picked some batteries, 10 in total, to be deployed in reserve and the army has still 180 guns that crossed the river. The fact was that at Friedland the Russian artillery wasn’t as decisive as in Eylau.

French Army – Napoleon Bonaparte Notes to French OOB: - It is quite easier to get good information for the French, and though there are some minors uncertainties the only real problem is artillery. Each OOB checked has appreciable differences for quantities and calibers. The result for my OOB is what I think it is most correct after a long and difficult researching process.

BATALLA DE FRIEDLAND
Battle map key features: 1- Each square is 1 km x 1 km. The combat map has two options, if playing with 15mm double rank is 6 km x 4 km the black dot rectangle (one table 3m x 2m). To play with 15mm single rank you need at least two 3m x 2m tables, red rectangles, for a total size of 5.33Km x 4 Km. 2- Thick yellow lines are main roads. Thin yellow lines are secondary roads. 3- Green woods are type medium. Light green woods are type light. 4- Dark grey buildings are type 3, medium grey are type 2 and light grey type 1. Each building is 100m x 100m. 5- All hills are VERY smooth, so they are ignored for combat, movement, fire , etc. Their ONLY use is for Line of Sight checks. 6- Alle River is impassable except on both fords and bridges. Besides the river is inside a deep gully, so the fords can only be crossed in march column or single company column and is treated like to cross a hill type 2. Fords must be crossed like bridges, i.e., one unit after another. 7- Thick blue lines, Muhlenfluss and Schroone streams, are type 3 streams. Besides those black dotes indicates very steep slopes that are treated like a type 3 wall except on bridges. (In practice you can treat them like impassable rivers though I think that infantry could cross it with heavy difficulties.) 8- Thin blue lines are type 2 streams. 9- There is a permanent bridge or equivalent in each place a road crosses any type of river or stream. Besides there are 3 temporary bridges already built on Alle river, and the Russian can construct another four temporary bridges over Muhlenfluss stream.

BATALLA DE FRIEDLAND
SCENARIO #1 – (9.00h to 21.00h) This scenario begins when the Russian army ended its deployment and began the attack. Since that moment there were only a skirmishing fight in Sortlack Wood and some charges of cavalry in front of Heinrichsdorf and Posthenen. In this scenario the Russian attack has little chances of success as it begins too late. DEPLOYMENT

SCENARIO #2 – Long Variant (5.00h to 21.00h) This scenario begins just at dawn. Lannes has only a few troops with him at Posthenen while the Russian have crossed the Alle river with advanced guard groups and the rest of the army is just beginning to cross it. In this scenario the Russian player has options to improve what they did in the battle trying to be more aggressive and defeat Lannes before the rest of the French army arrives. DEPLOYMENT

Russian deployment: 1- Russian army. Deployed as desired though what it is more logical is in march column. Of course many units wouldn’t fit into this area, they would enter in the map through the roads when there is available room. 2- Bagration Advanced guard division in march column 3- Gallitzin Cavalry 4- Kollogrivov Cavalry 5- Charnusonov advanced guard French deployment: 1- Oudinot division and Lannes. 9th Hussars can be deployed anywhere behind. One brigade from Oudinot division can be deployed in Sortlack wood, not closer of 500m to the Russians, in open order formation if desired 2- Nansouty and Grouchy divisions. 3- Thielmann Saxon cavalry brigade in march column. French reinforcements: 1- 5.30h: Fresia Cavalry Brigade enters by Konisberg road in march column. 2- 7.30h: Dupas Division, Dutch horse battery and Mortier by Konisberg road in march column. 3- 8.00h: 3rd Saxon Division enters by Eylau road in march column. 4- 8.00h: Beaumont and Colberg Brigades enters by Konisberg road in march column 5- 9.30h: Verdier 2nd Division enters by Eylau road in march column. 6- 10.00h.: Polish cavalry brigade enters by Konisberg road in march column. 7- 11.00h: d’Espagne heavy cavalry division enters by Eylau road in march column. 8- 12.00h: Napoleon and Guard cavalry enters by Eylau road in march column. 9- 12.15h: Marchand division and 1 8pdr battery enters by Eylau road in march column. 10- 12.30h: Rest of VI corps enters by Eylau road in any desired order in march column. 11- 13.30h. Rest of Guard Corps enters by Eylau road in march column. 12- 14.00h: I corps enters by Eylau road in any desired order in march column. All reinforcements must enter in march column one after another when there is available room. Initial orders: All initial French orders must be defend or MA though new orders can be issued just in the first turn. Any reinforcement must enter with a deploy or maneuver order. Gallitzin and Kollogrivov must have a MA or a defend order. Charnusonov can have a defend or pinning attack order . Both corps have deploy orders and their divisions must have this order to cross the river and deploy where desired. You should indicate the order to cross the bridge(s), route and place to deploy for each division crossing the river. There should be two big march columns, one through the left flank crossing only one bridge on Alle, and another to the right flank crossing another bridge on Alle and later the bridge on Muhlenfluss next to the lake. All these orders are activated. No order can be changed in the first turn by the Russian. Of course those units that were historically left on the other bank of Alle river cannot cross, included the reserve batteries that must be deployed as in scenario #1. Initial losses: French: -

BATALLA DE FRIEDLAND
COMMAND AND CONTROL SPECIAL RULES: Russian: The army has 2 Corps , Bagration and Gortchakov, and a Reserve that it is commanded directly by Bennigsen. Bennisgen can send orders to reserve divisions as desired. Ignore the Bagration divisional command. He is a corps commander and sends divisional orders to their divisions, including Charnousunov and Shepelev brigades that are treated like divisions for orders. The Guard Cossack regiment can have always a MA order independent of his brigade. Bagration can assign Shepelev brigade to Kollogrivov command. Doctorov can act like a second commander inside Gortchakov Corps for 7th and 8th divisions. He can be used to help these divisions , for example to activate orders, to rally units, to be placed at the front of any unit, etc. Besides from 15.00h forth Bennigsen can form a temporary corps commanded by Doctorov extracting one or both divisions from Gortchakov Corps. This is done sending the appropriate order, including the corps order for this temporary corps, to Gorchakov that has to activate it and then send a new order to Doctorov. When Doctorov activates this order the corps is formed with the order received. Doctorov has a divisional range because its corps is temporary. Cossacks in Uvarov division can act like an independent brigade with their own order. Command capability applies for both corps , but as an exception, jagger divisions of Bagration Corps can have a Pinning attack while attacking through Sortlack Wood even if the Corps order is Defend, Deploy or Maneuver. Russian jaggers can be deployed in open order only inside woods or towns and are semiskirmisher type. Each battery at the other side of Alle river is considered an independent unit that can only have a defend, maneuver or general retreat order. Bennigsen is who can change these orders. Russian batteries in infantry divisions can be combined to form a divisional batteries commanded directly by their division general or can be assigned directly to brigades. Some Jaggers regiments are so small that their battalions have been joined. The Russian army is a linear army. French: Lannes is the supreme commander for the French Army till Napoleon arrives. So Lannes can put himself a corps order and also send corps order to the other commanders. Lannes can detach Oudinot’s brigades as desired. They are elite brigades and can be treated like independent divisions for orders if desired. Historically it was done by Albert brigade to defend Heinrichsdorff and another one to fight inside Sortlack wood. Grouchy temporary corps is composed of his own dragoon division and d’Espagne division. Besides any other cavalry division or brigade can be added to his command. This is done by Lannes or Napoleon sending the proper order. Same way these units can also be de-detached. Grouchy has a corps order and also a divisional order for his own dragoon division. Senarmont can form up a Grand Battery using only guns from I corps. If the French player wants to do it, it must be done immediately after I Corps deploys and no artillery can be detached to any division. Guard brigades, including the middle guard, can be used as independent elite brigades if desired with their own divisional order. Guard artillery batteries can be assigned to a grand battery commanded by Couin. If done, every guard artillery must be used. No other grand battery can be formed. Grouchy can be used to launch a Grand Cavalry charge if desired. The order must be issued by Napoleon and every cavalry attached to Grouchy must be used, but at least it must be done with d’Espagne and Grouchy cavalry divisions. Grouchy has an additional -30% mod. to activate this Corps Attack order. Any French artillery battery can be transferred between commands. This can be done by their Corps commanders to change them between their own divisions, or by Lannes or Napoleon to change them between corps. Horse batteries can be detached to any division from the beginning of the battle or when they enter the map.
SPECIAL RULES: Bridges and fords: Each place a road crosses a river there is a permanent bridge , or similar, that cannot be destroyed. Besides there are 3 temporary bridges on Alle river and the Russian can construct 4 more over Muhlenfluss. These bridges can be destroyed. file:///E|/INFO/Napoleonicos/FVTW/BATTLE%20OF%20FRIEDLAND.htm (22 de 25)28/08/2008 19:07:13
BATALLA DE FRIEDLAND
A temporary bridge can be destroyed by artillery fire if it catches fire the same way like a building type thatched. With level 3 the bridge is destroyed. With level 1 or 2 it can be still crossed. If the building closer to a bridge is in fire level 4 the fire will spread to the bridge. Any unit alongside or over the bridge can be used for fire fighting. Any French artillery battery is considered to have at least 2 howitzers. To build a temporary bridge over the Muhlenfluss there must be a Russian infantry unit within 200m of that point and no enemy unit inside 200m of that point. 1 hour after being announced (during movement phase) the bridge will be finished. During this time there is no obligation for the Russian to have a unit near that point, but if a French come closer to 200m the bridge is destroyed and is lost. The Russian have a maximum of 4 bridges to construct. There are two fords on Alle river but they were unknown to the Russian. To be able to use them he has to discover them. After 15.00 h if at least one battalion or cavalry regiment is within 200m of a ford a die is rolled, on 1-2 (1d10) the ford is discovered and can be used. Russians reserves: The Russian artillery reserve can’t ever cross the Alle river but it can be relocated within 200m from their original positions. They can be also moved outside the map to withdraw them definitively. The 14th division and Dolgorouki brigade can cross the river only if the Russian player takes completely Posthenen or Heinrichsdorf, to reinforce that flank. Those divisions must be attached to Bagration or Gortchakov corps by an order sent by Bennigsen. Platov’s flying column can only be used after 17.00h. and only in two ways: it can be sent to cross the south ford and attack the French right flank (it was what it tried historically but were easily repulsed by the French), or can be sent to cross the Alle river by Gr.Wohnsdorf and attack the French left flak. For the first way after the order is activated Platov’s division enters deployed the map north of Friedland Hegewald. For the second way 1.00 h after the order is activated by Platov roll a die, on 1-3 (1d10) Platov’s division enters deployed on the side map right of Karschau. You can only use one way to commit Platov and cannot be changed later. Bennigsen orders Bennigsen original plan was to destroy Lannes corps before it could receive reinforcements, but he spent too much time deploying his troops and the attack begun too late. He also didn’t realize how much French troops had arrived until it was too late. So, for scenario #2 if you like an historical development, Bennisgen cannot issue attack orders to their corps till 8.00h (second time the Russian can issue orders). If you like to give him more options allow him to issue attack orders on turn 6.30h (first time he can issue new orders). Besides never allow the Russian player to send any kind of order that implies a Russian unit to re-cross Alle river or to move them easternmost form Karschau, before 17.00h (he can issue new orders that turn). From 17.00h he can issue orders to withdraw the Army that must be done through the east side of the map. Russian stubbornness (optional) This battle is possibly the best example to show how stubborn was the Russian line infantry to not surrender or flee even placed in the most desperate situations. Whole battalions were annihilated by French artillery but they didn’t abandon their positions. So apply next rules to represent it: - For line infantry battalions (not grenadiers, jaggers or guard) apply a +3 modifier for morale checks (not for rallies) - Apply an additional -10% for brigade or division morale checks except if the -10% AA mod is file:///E|/INFO/Napoleonicos/FVTW/BATTLE%20OF%20FRIEDLAND.htm (23 de 25)28/08/2008 19:07:13

also being used. - For any Russian infantry unit when they check the surrender table add a -3 modifier. - Any Russian unit forced to retreat or rout movements through the Alle River checks the surrender table as usual but before that, a 1d10 die is rolled in the D file of the Melee casualties table. That percentage is marked like losses immediately representing soldiers that are trying to cross the river swimming (though many of them would die drowned) and obviously wouldn’t surrender. VICTORY CONDITIONS: Napoleon’s main goal in this battle was to destroy the Russian army as much as possible. Bennigsen’s first goal was to destroy Lannes before Napoleon could help him but if this is not accomplished he must try to avoid the destruction of his army and save it recrossing the Alle river. For every scenario if Napoleon is dead, badly wounded or captured the battle is a decisive Russian victory. For every scenario if Heinrichsdorff and Posthenen are both taken completely by 12.00h turn by the Russian player the battle is a decisive Russian victory. In any other case points for losses must be counted at the end of the battle, including initial losses: - 1 point for each infantry, artillery and Cossack loss. - 3 points for each cavalry loss - 5 points for each old guard infantry or guard cavalry loss (not fusiliers or guard artillery). - Any captured figure is worth double points. - 5 points for each French gun figure captured - 10 points for each Russian gun figure captured (for the Russian player to save their guns should be a priority) - 5 points for each brigade general killed, badly wounded or captured - 10 points for each division general killed, badly wounded or captured - 20 points for each corps general killed, badly wounded or captured, except Lannes, Ney and Bagration - 40 points if Lannes, Ney or Bagration are killed, badly wounded or captured. If at the end of the battle the French player has at least 1000 points: - If the proportion of points between French and Russian is > 3:1 is a decisive victory - If the proportion of points between French and Russian is > 2:1 is a tactical victory - If the proportion of points between French and Russian is > 1.5:1 is a marginal victory - If the proportion of points between French and Russian is > 1:1 is a draw - If the proportion of points between French and Russian is < 1:1 is a Russian marginal victory If at the end of the battle the French player has at least 750 points: - If the proportion of points between French and Russian is > 3:1 is a tactical victory - If the proportion of points between French and Russian is > 2:1 is a marginal victory - If the proportion of points between French and Russian is > 1.5:1 is a draw - If the proportion of points between French and Russian is > 1:1 is a Russian marginal victory - If the proportion of points between French and Russian is < 1:1 is a Russian tactical victory If at the end of the battle the French player has at least 500 points: - If the proportion of points between French and Russian is > 3:1 is a marginal victory - If the proportion of points between French and Russian is > 2:1 is a draw - If the proportion of points between French and Russian is > 1.5:1 is a Russian marginal victory - If the proportion of points between French and Russian is > 1:1 is a Russian tactical victory
