Autumn 2009
FROM OUR DIRECTOR: EXPRESSIONS OF GRATITUDE A A A A A In today’s column, I’d like to express my gratitude for all the community and staff support shown to the Library during the difficult course of the past few weeks. I am thankful for those patrons who wrote letters to our elected officials stating just how important the public library is to them. To this end, you made a difference. Instead of a 50 percent cut to the Public Library Fund, we suffered only a 30 percent cut. I am thankful for our Board of Trustees. The Board struggled with the decisions to reduce staff weekly work hours and the need to close on Friday in order to balance our budget. The Board was able to maintain health care, sick leave and vacation benefits for our staff. I am thankful for our staff, which continued to give exemplary service to our patrons even while knowing that there would be salary cuts. Each staff member took a five-hour-per-week reduction, which will significantly impact take-home pay. TH
I am thankful for the Friends of the Library, which supports your library through fundraisers such as the Book Sale and provides money and volunteers for programs such as the Artfest. I am thankful for our local businesspeople, for coming forward and asking how we are holding up during these economic times. Often you make a donation or offer a suggestion that is helpful. I am thankful for those who have made monetary donations either in memory of a friend or family member or to honor someone. We have been able to add materials – books, DVD’s, music CD’s, book on CD etc. – through your generosity. To all of you who use and love our Library, I thank you. You make me proud to be the director @ your Library. Susan Pittman Library Director
