Library Letter News from the St Marys Community Public Library

utumn is here and students are returning to school. This has caused me to reflect on how your library can assist with this transition for your family. We have two services that will be helpful. They are our Library Catalog and our Library Databases. Both of these can be accessed from home, work or the library. Through the use of the SEO (Serving Every Ohioan) Consortium, you can order library materials from 70 Ohio libraries. You are not limited to the items owned by your library. Students can order library materials in many different formats – books, magazines, DVDs to support their research needs. Author studies – Junie B. Jones, Arthur -- are promoted in the elementary buildings and books about these characters can be ordered in as well. Through the library catalog you can find those needed Reading Counts or Accelerated Reading books. Library materials ordered from other libraries generally arrive in two to fours days so some advance planning is necessary. Students going back to school will be faced with papers that need to be researched. Besides the use of the SEO Consortium they have the option of using the OPLIN databases. These databases allow students to obtain information from a variety of sources including online magazine articles. Two brochures have been developed to assist patrons who would like to access their library from home. They are called “Accessing the Library Catalog From Home” and “Accessing Library Databases @ Home.” Be sure to request a copy of each to assist with your research needs. For those of you who do not have a computer, the library does have a computer lab with Internet access for your use. Your librarians are the skilled gateway to the Internet. reliable data. The Internet, as important as it is, does not always provide reliable information. We will assist you in getting started with your research needs. Computer classes are offered. This Fall there will be instruction about searching and surfing, e-mail and Microsoft Word. Check on page 2 to see when the classes are offered. Your library has gone wireless. If you have a laptop you are welcome to use it in your library. You have the luxury of sitting anywhere inside the library and having access. Your library card is your gateway to this treasure trove of free information and reference materials. Come and visit us! Susan Heckler Pittman Library Director
