Indonesian people make mistakes in pronouncing English words can be
attributed to some reasons: difficulty in pronouncing diphthongs and low English proficiency. Indonesian people make errors or mistakes in pronouncing English words can be attributed to difficulty in pronouncing English diphthong. Yong (2001) argues that Indonesian people tend to realize English diphthong as pure vowels which may be pronounced in the long or short forms. They tend to substitute English diphthongs into vowels which are common in Indonesian (Sumbayak, 2009) for example, the word great (greɪt) is pronounced as (grit) by Indonesian people. The level of English proficiency is also the cause of errors or mistakes in pronouncing English words. Riyani & Prayogo (2013) stated Indonesian speaker who have low English tend to make errors in pronouncing English words because they often over generalized in pronouncing the words for example, the word “determine” which should be pronounced as (dɪˈtɜː.mɪn) is pronounced as (deˈtɜː.maɪn). Some people think the word ‘mine’ should be pronounced as (maɪn). They over generalize the word ‘mine’ in determine word is pronounced
same as in the word mine which means punyaku. Because of having low proficiency, people also pronounce the word eight as (eɪɡh) instead of (eɪt). 4.
One of the most popular methods used in teaching English speaking is
audio lingual method. Communicative drilling is an effective technique to improve the FL learners’ pronunciation accuracy. As stated by Senel (2006) cited from Siswanto and Wiryanto’s research (2012) that drilling technique is very useful to improve students pronunciation as it can encourage student to produce because accurate pronunciation. Teacher can provide several exercises about drilling technique to make students aware the difference between particular words, for example comparative drill exercise to distinguish between the words great and greet, or bride and bridge. While for solving the word-stressing problem, teacher can provide the explanation about the pattern of English word stress for example the word presentation. Its stress is on the third syllable because according to Mutonono (2016) the words which end with -tion has the stress on the syllable before last.
