Terms to Know Function: a mathematical relationship between two variables. A change in one variable affects the other one.
5 8
x+3 y = ????
SLOPE: this is a measurement of how steep a line is. It is represented with the letter m.
difference in Y m= difference in X
8 3
…it shows how
much “Y” changes when “X” changes!
m=
3 8
Y – Intercept: this is the point where the line hits the Y Axis on a graph. The “x” coordinate will ALWAYS be zero at this point. (0,5) …it is represented with the letter b
b=5
(0,-5)
b = -5
(0,-2)
b = -2
Function Formula: a math sentence that shows the relationship between X and Y.
For every rock I get 2 dollars!
d = 2r
Trog start out with 10 dollars. Then get ½ dollar for every shell I find.
d = ½ s + 10 how much money Trog gets in dollars
Trog have tricky one… Trog have 5 dollar. I don’t make any money no matter how many shell I find.
d = 0s + 5 Dude, really?
Slope-Intercept Form: this is a function formula that involves the slope and the yintercept along with the two variables.
y = mx + b slope
y intercept
Point-Slope Form: this is a function formula that involves the slope and any point on the line it represents, along with the two variables. slope
y – y1 = m(x – x1) ANY POINT
To get the Slope-Intercept Form, just solve for y and simplify!
