Panvax®H1N1 Influenza ’09 Vaccine ACT Health is encouraging everyone to consider receiving the Panvax® H1N1 vaccine soon. While this pandemic influenza is mild in most cases it has been severe in some people and has caused a number of deaths. The Australian Government is making Panvax® H1N1 vaccine available to protect all Australians, with priority to those most at risk of severe disease. It will also help protect against future waves of the virus. The vaccine is free and there is enough for everyone. Panvax® H1N1 can be administered by your GP, some corporate medical services or through specific Community Health clinics. To make an appointment at a Community Health clinic phone 6207 9977. The H1N1 influenza ’09 strain has been the predominant influenza in circulation in the ACT and other parts of Australia since June this year. Anyone wanting protection should receive the vaccine now, particularly those in the risk groups who have suffered most from this highly contagious disease. The nationally agreed priority groups are: • • • • • • •

pregnant women; those with chronic medical conditions (initially those aged 10 years and over); individuals with moderate to severe obesity; health care workers; Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people; children (aged 10 years and over) in special schools; and parents and guardians of children aged 0 to 6 months.

Panvax® H1N1 is a one dose vaccine for people aged 10 and over. Further information regarding vaccination for those aged 9 years and under will be available following the conclusion of clinical trials in children. For furtherinformation on the Panvax® H1N1 vaccine visit www.health.act.gov.au

Asbestos at Pickles Auction House Fyshwick Advice from the Chief Health Officer, Australian Capital Territory Building works at Pickles Auction House undertaken in the period 5-9 October 2009 (inclusive) have resulted in the release of asbestos into the air. If you visited Pickles during this period, you may have been exposed to asbestos. Given the relatively short duration of your possible exposure to loose asbestos fibres at Pickles then, the probability of your contracting an asbestos-related disease is low. An isolated exposure to asbestos fibres of short duration is unlikely to result in the development of an asbestos-related disease. However, if you have any health concerns, please seek medical advice from your General Practitioner. Alternatively, anyone with concerns may contact the Asbestos Health Information line on 6205 4411. It would be helpful if you would provide this advice to any person who accompanied you on any visit to Pickles during the dates above. Dr Charles Guest Chief Health Officer
