Greater protection for vulnerable people in the ACT The ACT Government is seeking community comment on a proposed system of background checking for people working with vulnerable people in the ACT. The ACT Minister for Community Services, Katy Gallagher MLA, released a discussion paper on A Working with Vulnerable People Checking System for the ACT in mid August 2009. Notices Tree replacement program set to begin

Almost 300 trees will be removed under the ACT Government’s Tree Replacement Program this year, but more than double that number will be replanted.

Barriers, warning and diversion signs to be erected on site.

This year’s work will involve the removal of 282 trees and 48 suckers and stumps, and the planting of 588 trees.

The ACT Government will be holding a drop-in information session to discuss a proposed site for the Islamic School of Canberra. Material from site investigations will be on display, including a traffic and parking study, environmental site assessment, and landscape and tree assessment.

Where: Commonwealth Park Canberra This year Floriade NightFest returns in style with more live entertainment, outdoor film screenings, food and wine at the stylish new Soul@Lotus Lounge, cocktails at the Glow Bar, comedy at the Carnival Stage, a giant ferris wheel, bustling night markets, a massive finale display of fire and music, and even a special children’s section.

The trees in question have been identified as being in decline, or already hazardous to the public. The works will begin in September, with planting to begin in early October, and will be carried out at 24 sites across the city. The Tree Replacement Program primarily focuses on the older suburbs of Canberra and includes trees in suburban streets, laneways and parks in the suburbs of Ainslie, Campbell, Dickson, Forrest, Deakin, Griffith, Lyneham, Narrabundah, O’Connor, Reid, Turner and Yarralumla. Approvals from the ACT Heritage Council and the National Capital Authority have been obtained for the necessary sites and consultation with affected residents and community groups, took place in early June 2009.
