Proposal 0.7 Campaign WHEREAS nearly half the world’s population lives off of less than two US dollars a day; AND WHEREAS the United Nations has stated that if all rich countries were to donate 0.7% of their gross national income to official development assistance, basic human needs could be met for all; AND WHEREAS Canada has pledged many times since 1970 to donate 0.7% of gross national income to official development assistance; AND WHEREAS Canada currently only donates 0.34% of gross national income to official development assistance; AND WHEREAS Canada is hosting the G8 and G20 meetings in Huntsville, Ontario in June 2010, which provides a timely opportunity to draw attention to this issue; BE IT RESOLVED THAT the SFUO adopt and support the Get to the Point: Point Seven Campaign. Strategies: 1) Lead activities that raise awareness and encourage action among students, faculty, and staff at the University of Ottawa in regards to the Get to the Point: Point Seven Campaign. 2) Build connections with other Canadian universities and community organizations who may be interested in the campaign to garner their support and/or participation. 3) Lead activities that aim to ensure Canadian Members of Parliament (MPs) will table this issue in Parliament leading up to the G8 and G20 meetings in June 2010. 4) Partner with Make Poverty History for their launch of the Get to the Point: Point Seven Campaign in January 2010. Tactics: 1) Create and distribute petitions and letters to MPs that will push the federal government to set a timeline to reach the 0.7% target. 2) Lead awareness-raising activities on campus such as film screenings, workshops, and a debate or panel discussion during International Culture and Development Week in January 2010. 3) Propose that the 0.7 campaign be accepted as an official campaign of the Canadian Federation of Students (CFS), at either the provincial or federal level. Resources:

1. Provide funding for printing petitions, letters to MPs, publicity leading up to educational workshops and awareness-raising events (eg. posters and handouts). 2. Provide funding for translation of the above mentioned materials. 3. Subsidize the cost of at least one venue booking related to a 0.7 campaign event on campus.
