Woe to You, Hypocrites! Matthew 23: 1‐36, Mark 12: 38‐40, Luke 20: 45‐47
In the church, there are 2 types of faith systems, one of it dwells in the circulation of blessings of God, which has a proper foundation in the beginning and later, expands and manifest. This system brings initial graces from God and later brings further graces and multiple folds of blessings. When one walks according to this system of faith, the more the person walk, the more strength he/she will gain, because they were established in a system which enables them to see God and also enables them to have a relationship with God and His love; the other system of faith dwells in the circulation of curses. The other system of faith has no proper foundation and people who have this system of faith may not have seen God or they may have loss the love of God for a very long time. Many of these people served the Lord according to their own strength, human qualifications and good behaviors, but it resulted in more confusions and conflicts. Sooner or later, their faith became a bondage to themselves and matters will get worse. In today’s scripture, the Lord had blamed the hypocrisies of the scribes and the Pharisees and had declared the 7 woes to these people. Therefore, it is our duty to judge whether any signs of danger lurks in the beginning and the process of our faith system. If we had discovered any issues with our faith system, how are we able to turn them back to the circulations of blessings of God? 1. Woe to you, hypocrites! a. The 7 woes: i. Shutting the doors of Heaven <13 – 14> ii. Bringing people to hell <15> iii. Emphasized on sacrificial goods which is of high material value <16 – 22> iv. The tithe and service which neglects mercy, justice and faith <23 – 24> v. Clean outwardly but dirty in the inside <25 – 26> vi. Beautiful outwardly but packed with dead bodies in the inside <27 – 28> vii. Persecutes the righteous <29 – 36> b. Not only these people will face disaster in the future, but because they have the root of the woes of Satan in their lives, they are currently living in disaster. i. The current situation of the gentiles and the heathens = they had left God and operated in the curse. 1. They went after things which will be destroyed like: “desires of the flesh, material wealth, success and status”, and they urge the others to pursue these things as well. 2. The disaster of religions: many religions had used wrongful theories, laws and signs to make the people suffer even more. People will be lost because of these. ii. The “wolves” among the Israelites = they will face the wrath of God and their woes will be terribly serious. 1. For Israel (the churches of today) and God’s children (the sheep and the citizens), the reason why God gave them the laws, structures/orders, decrees and regulations are for the citizens of God to obtain preservation, strength to live and the abundance of God. These laws are NOT supposed to be used to keep them in bondage and to kill them. Among the Israelites, the wolves which wore a mask of sheep had come. They used the “law” to redeem, accuse and murder the citizens of God. Therefore, these are the reasons why Christ Jesus had been extremely offensive towards the scribes and the Pharisees, warning them regarding the 7 woes or disasters.
2. A wrong beginning and a blinded journey will lead to terrible results * In actual fact, many leaders of the Israelites and the leaders of the churches didn’t know that they were wrong. They had the wrong thought that they must “perform goodness to others” and carry out a good behavior. All these attitudes are wrong because these actually began from the fact that they have not seen or witness God. They have not known God and did not understand that God had revealed Himself and His perfect will (His heart and deeds) through the Gospel to all of us. And they too had not discovered the righteousness, mercy and love from God through Christ Jesus. Therefore, for all of their thoughts, judgments and actions were in the biggest “misunderstanding”. All of their actions originate from the lies and deceptions of Satan. a. Because they had a wrong start, so the more they show their good behaviors, they more they will be blinded, and it will be worsen. i. A wrong start of faith will not call a person to establish a relationship of “father and son, love and eternity” with God. * Our starting point of faith should never be originated from human qualifications, but it should be originated from the mercy of God = meaning, it is not that after we have acted or believed in God and the Gospel, only then we are called to be His children, but it is because we were called to be His children, we are able to believe in the Gospel and walk in the Gospel. ii. When we are in the wrong journey of faith, we will never be able to preserve the love between God and us, and it will never be able to call the people to obtain freedom, obtain strength to live and bear more spiritual fruits. * It is not because we had prayed or worshiped God so that we are called to be blessed; instead, because we are the people whom were called to be blessed, therefore we like to use prayer and worship to enjoy the graces, strength to live and the rewards from Heaven. * We don’t live to oblige in the truth and the commandments. Instead, it is because we want to enjoy the process of sanctification of life, therefore we need the truth and the commandments. * It is not that we should only look and seek the future and the results, but we must emphasize our current moments and the life processes (so that we could discover God’s love and follow Him diligently). iii. 2 totally different results: * The living faith is always rooted in proper foundation and will continue to expand, brings graces upon graces and blessings upon blessings. As a result, the longer a person walks the journey of life, the greater the strength he/she will obtain ÅÆ whereas, a faith which is dead does not root itself in proper foundation. It brings conflicts upon conflicts and bondage upon bondage. As a result, a person will encounter serious disaster. b. Why couldn’t these people have a good start in their faith? = because their personalities and eye sight did not allow them to have a start of blessedness and of the love of God. * Because of their stubbornness and arrogance, they did not understand the fundamental problem of human (the problem of the flesh, the roots of sin and Satan). i. That is why they have no ways to acknowledge that men had completely fallen and were weak. They thought that they could do good works while their hearts were evil. These are all categorized as humanistic or humanism, meaning: works out of very limited human strength. ii. That is why they could not comprehend that salvation is a complete package ‐ from the beginning until the end and all the works of salvation belongs to God, as salvation has nothing to do with whether a human has good behavior or not. Salvation is only for those whom were called to be loved and to have the mercy of God. Unfortunately, these people thought we can influence God with our own attributes. They thought that even after we are saved, we “might” loose the salvation according to our attributes.
iii. Therefore, their initiatives were all out of the fear that they will lose the graces of God. Their entire journey of faith walks within the fear of losing God’s graces. Î Because they could not enjoy the love of God and the graces of God (Heaven), that is why, they educate, judge and accuse the rest of the people in wrongness and made the rest of the people not being able to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. c. Only the children of God whom are called to receive the love and mercy of God will be able to have a good start of faith after they witness God in love, and in love, they communicate and walked with God. * Only those whom have the characteristics of a person with the 8 beatitudes (the poor in spirit, those who mourn, the meek, the hunger and thirst, the merciful, pure in heart, peacemakers and those whom were persecuted for righteousness’ sake) could understand the fundamental problem of human. i. Only then, they could understand what is meant by God’s act, the journey of faith and the processes. They will be very willing to seek how God works, be obedient to God’s works and they testify God. ii. They too can understand what is meant by born again, sanctification and serving the Lord. All these understandings could only be obtained after a person knew the love of God. Because they witness God in love, therefore they were leaded by the love of God. Î We have to examine our past experiences and attributes through our special identity, belongings, career and future. Only then, we can be able to discover God’s love and we could see new graces from God every day. Therefore for our entire life time, not only we could enjoy the abundance of graces from God, but we will be able to testify God’s graces and love to other people, lead them to Heaven and together, we enjoy the graces and the love of God. 3. Acknowledge and Recover a. Acknowledge i. Do I know my life? Am I a person with the 8 beatitudes? 1. Am I poor in spirit? Have I acknowledged that I am being created, limited and full of sinful characteristics? Have I discovered the perfect will of my creation and willing to obey this perfect will of God? 2. Do I have a heart which mourns? Lament my sinfulness, weakness and the sins of the entire world? 3. Do I have a heart which is meek, hungry and thirsty, merciful, pure, of a peacemaker and having been persecuted for righteousness sake? Acknowledge these one by one… 4. When we acknowledge all these beatitudes, we’ll discover that we are called to be loved, called to receive the mercy of God and called to be His children. Through this, we will also know God’s eternal love for us, and we can solidify the unchangeable relationship of God with us, and we will know our selves better, etc… 5. Acknowledge: Am I a person who truly understands the fundamental problem of human? Willing to died and be resurrected with Christ Jesus only to obtain a new living life, objective and content? ii. Are all things in my life as a believer according to my witness of God, and were they being established in the love of God? 1. Before I could understand the Holy Blood of Christ Jesus and the Gospel of Christ Jesus, I was being deceived and I didn’t understand the love of God, I didn’t know He is my Heavenly Father, my God in eternal, and I was afraid of God…Finally, I understood all these and I will not be deceived again (we should live in love and establish a good relationship with God).
2. Do I understand that God as my Father in Heaven had prepared His promises and His blessings for me? (this is relating to the covenant of God with us). 3. Have I judge matters according to the promises of God, and also had gain enlightenment regarding God’s eternal plans through my own attributes of life? iii. Currently, what is my status of life in my relationship with Him, my communication and my walk with Him? 1. Currently, within my spirit, what are the conditions of communication with God? 2. For everyday in my life, have I seen the new love of my Father in Heaven? Have I seen how He has guided me? Have I witness if His promises had been fulfilled in my life? 3. Where is my spiritual stop (timetable) currently? For these couple of years, what did God do in my life? What are the areas which are the most blessed ones in my life? How the Lord had leaded me yesterday? What is the Lord speaking to my heart currently? 4. Were there any breakthroughs in the content of my life? b. The dangerous signs of faith: i. Unable to see God and being afraid of God 1. The great infinite love of God had been revealed through Christ Jesus; No matter in what circumstances, we are able to see God’s love…many times when we were weak, our Father God in Heaven had taken care of us… 2. No matter how reverent and serious we are in serving the Lord, if these actions weren’t carried in the mood of love with God, it has to be wrong. We must see God’s love in everything and bring forth the heart of the Lord in serving ourselves and our neighbors. ÅÆ Being afraid of God is a form of accusation from the evil spirit. We shouldn’t allow this to happen! #The Israelites were afraid that God will kill them in the wilderness and that leads to terrible results. 3. If we do not preserve our communication with the Lord and if we do not preserve our thoughts and deeds, terrible things will happen in our hearts when we are being attacked by the evil spirits. 4. Most importantly, we have to understand that God through the 5 offerings (Moses’ 5 offerings) has revealed His love and perfect will for us. We have to master the mysteries of obtaining freedom through prayer. ii. Unable to obey 1. Our God is a God who is stubborn and He has never changed, for He is faithful to us; God’s love is the purest and the most complete to us. God knew very well which paths of life is the most beneficial to us eternally. He has orchestrated His perfect will for us and we must always discover it, obey and be humble towards it. We have to exert control over our hearts so that we won’t be in a condition which goes against God. 2. Disobedience will bring froth the attacks of the evil spirit and will lead us to death. This will diminish God’s glory, making us loosing the graces of God. At the right time, God will enforce His disciplinary action. * Acknowledge: Am I being obedient to my life’s direction and objectives? Am I being obedient towards the sanctification of the Lord in my life? Have I examine myself and follow the Lord in every day? Am I obedient towards the areas of my life which the Lord calls me to be focus and be faithful? iii. Emphasizing too on outward behavior 1. Outward behavior, mannerism and how we carry our selves is very important in our spiritual life. These acts will preserve us to be able to live in the grace of God as well.
However, the thing which is more important than good outward behavior is a “lively spirit”. Our God is not the God of the dead, but the God of the living. But if a disciple only focuses on promoting good outward behavior, we can conclude that his spirit has already left the guidance of the Holy Spirit. If he doesn’t revive himself and depend on the Holy Spirit, his spirit will be dried and drained to death, and whatever he does will not have the strength and the revelation from God. ‐ Acknowledge: Have I been depending on the Holy Spirit to pray, worship, offer and serve? c. How to recover? i. There is only one solution to the problem: No matter in what circumstances, we have to quickly return back before the Glorious Throne of God and seek forth God’s perfect will, become willing to love the Lord and to serve the Lord. With this, we will definitely see God’s mercy, healing, perseverance, comfort and rewards… ii. In our continuous examination of ourselves, if we had discovered the areas which made us fail or fall, we must reconstruct, repair and strive for a breakthrough in those areas (we have to revive the love of the Lord and strengthen our relationship with the Lord / establish a proper system of life / examine ourselves and be faithful).
