Translation
Bertram & Family
From mid-December, 08, to 27th February, 09, the Translation Team worked hard at group revising the first draft of Luke, prepared by the Bible Society of the West Indies a few years ago. Presently, the Team is in the process of re-reading the improved draft, to ensure it communicates the original meaning and sounds/reads well. The next step is to test the translation including the over 60 important terms that occur in Luke – these include expressions for concepts such as soul, High Priest, Son of Man, righteous and tetrarch. Bertram has the joy checking where these terms occur in the Greek text of Luke and examining how they have been translated in each instance. The Translation Team has also had the privilege of meeting the Project’s Translation Consultant, Dr Ron Ross, for the 1st time. Three days were spent looking at issues specific to audio translations in addition to concerns the Consultant had with regard to the current translation. Bertram was also able to help one of the Project’s major sponsors, The Seed Company, conduct a study which seeks to discover the expectations Jamaica have of the Project.
Translation Consultant & Translation Team
On 09th February, Bertram also had the privilege of being visited by SIL Americas Area Translation Coordinator, Bill Bivin. The purpose of Bill’s visit was to discuss with Bertram his current professional growth and to develop growth plan for the years to come. Bertram found the visit helpful – it informed him of the current needs in Bible Translation particularly in the Americas and of what he needs to do, in order to become a Translation Consultant.
Family As one might expect, Daniel has brought joy to the family—forget his desire to play between 1 and 2 am and his screaming us deaf whenever he believes he’s not being given adequate attention! It’s a joy discovering his idiosyncrasies and seeing him grow and gain control over his muscles. As we write, he’s not doing so well – he went for his 3rd round of immunisation vaccines recently, and we are sure you know what that means in terms of his reactions! Like his dad, Daniel isn’t fond of the beach!

Dornett continues to be a wonderful Christian wife and mother. For some time now, though, she’s been experiencing on and off stomach pains for which she’s visited the doctors regularly. With the exception of the last visit, she’s been treated for ‘gas.’ Our family doctor has expressed concern at the ineffectiveness of the medications prescribed and sent her to a medical centre to do a “Barium Meal” X-ray, to see whether or not she’s developing an ulcer or something of the sort. There’s a new addition to the family—this time around it’s a dog which we’ve decided to call “Tompi-Tii” (very small). Tompi is a 3 month old black and brown Shih Tzu who doesn’t mind playing day in day out! He’s fun to be around and Bertram finds walking him relaxing. Bertram was successful in his studies at the University last semester and is doing two modules this semester. He makes a 2nd presentation re: Bible translation at the uni soon.
Transportation Bertram failed his first driving test in February and is scheduled to retake it on 23rd March. We would like to acquire a suitable vehicle which would go a long way in helping us get around the island for both ministry and family purposes. We are thinking of something in the £5,000.00 region. This should get us a relatively good 11 or so year old motor car. PRAYER REQUESTS Do use the above information inform your prayers for us. We pray for you regularly. So, please send us your requests.
