Off The Wall... Craftsmanship
In The Works: CONFERENCE TABLES High-technology Engineering and Communications Firm, White Plains DESIGN BY: RMJM HILLER
On any given day, WallGoldfinger is likely to have several major projects underway in its manufacturing facility. WallGoldfinger’s factory houses the sophisticated equipment mandatory in today’s production environment: state-of-the-art finish application, computer controlled routing, advanced machining systems, and, most recently added, a custom built Italian panel sander. However, hand craftsmanship is not a thing of the past at WallGoldfinger; all veneer layups are done in-house and by hand as this is the only way to achieve the precision expected in a WallGoldfinger product. Similarly, quality furniture assembly involves a significant amount of hand fitting, trimming and adjustment and this requires skill and judgment that comes only with experience. Two examples of this intensive shop activity are shown here. Our top photograph illustrates a RMJM Hillier designed 22’-6” diameter open “C” shaped boardroom table for a high tech engineering/communications company in White Plains, NY. The table is veneered in quartered walnut featuring solid walnut molded edges. The writing surface is clad in “Durabull” artificial leather. Nine power and data hatches are provided and 14 microphones fitted in a 4” high berm.
Private Equity Firm, Chicago DESIGN BY: GARY LEE PARTNERS
The table shown below was designed by Chicago’s Gary Lee Partners for a prominent private equity firm. The table is boat shaped with curved ends and measures 12’-6” x 41’-7”. Zebrawood is the primary veneer, laid up in a series of diamonds, and these are interrupted by an 8” wide band of block mottled makore. The makore band contains 16 power data hatches.
Versatility
Reconfigurable ARBOR TABLES Arbor tables have proved to be a flexible, low cost alternative solution for boardrooms, conference rooms, and training rooms for over two decades. The essence of an Arbor table is its lightweight top and its removable legs or base — beyond that, the sky’s the limit in terms of design possibilities. Arbors are typically joined together in different configurations to suit different purposes; this is made possible by WallGoldfinger’s unique ganging mechanisms. Added to an already extensive list of components and material choices, new for 2009 are an aluminum edge molding and a cruciform section extruded aluminum leg. The leg is unique in that it features the option of snap-in panels; these create integral wire chases. Below is an arrangement of 12 Arbor tables featuring puncture resistant synthetic leather, a material with considerable versatility used for upholstery, desk inlays, or wall and panel applications. We have recently updated our Arbor Specification Guide. Please see our website to download a PDF version or contact one of our sales representatives for a printed copy. As with many firms, 2008 was one of the best years in our 38 year history. Can we just do it over? Unfortunately, it looks like 2009 will be a different year. In response to the challenges now facing our economy and industry, we have introduced new, easily specified, high quality but less expensive products. Successfully combining durable marble and granite table tops with intricate communication technology has become an important part of our work. Responding to this need, we have recently compiled a comprehensive Stone Specification Guide. We think this will take the mystery out of specifying stone tables. And we have upgraded our Arbor Table Specification Guide. For many years, the Arbor table system has provided our clients with a flexible and economical solution. Look for information on these programs in this newsletter. We hope you enjoy this 22nd issue of our Newsletter. Please sign up for our exciting new monthly enewsletter at www.wallgoldfinger.com.

Permanence
Durability defined: Stone Tables Originally known for its woodworking expertise, WallGoldfinger is now a highly regarded source for stone tables. We did our first small stone project back in 1985 and since then our staff has gained vast experience in handling this versatile material. We’ve been told by more than a few designers that we are the company they think of when they’re thinking of stone tables. Here we’re showing only a few of the hundreds of stone tables we’ve built, just to give you an idea of the many design possibilities and the variety of stones that are available. Besides inherent durability, stone offers all sorts of visual possibilities: dark to light, mottled to homogenized, striped to wavy, in all sorts of colors. From top to bottom we have: »» Calacatta Crestola marble »» Blue Gneiss granite »» Absolute Black granite »» Crema Marfil marble »» Siena Silver travertine If you have a stone project in mind, please contact us. We can help with basic design, slab selection and inspection, budgeting, and technology integration. Using our advanced computer graphics capability, we can also develop renderings, enabling you to see a virtual version of your project. Finally, we can send you our new, 80-page guide to specifying stone tables. It contains a wealth of information about basic material characteristics, stone types and colors, and table design considerations. WallGoldfinger field technicians and project managers love working in tropical locales, especially when the installation happens to coincide with sub-zero weather in Vermont. This project in Georgetown, the Cayman Islands, provided just such an opportunity. The client, a major international financial services firm, engaged DDL Studio, Ltd. of Georgetown to design a sleek 21st century office environment, the centerpiece of which is an elegant boardroom. WallGoldfinger, known throughout the corporate and design worlds for its commitment to quality, was the logical choice as fabricator of the centerpiece’s focal point, the boardroom table. Working with DDL’s basic design ideas, WallGoldfinger developed concept renderings showing various potential finish combinations, thus allowing the client to visualize the final product with speed and without a scrap of material being sacrificed. WallGoldfinger pioneered the use computer graphics in the custom furniture industry and this technique is now considered mandatory for design evaluation and vetting. An open-ended ellipse, this 38’-0” x 20’-0” table features plain sliced walnut veneer, solid maple edges and a brushed stainless steel inset band. The band contains 10 power/data hatches, providing the 21 board members state-of-the-art connectivity.
The boardroom provides views of the burgeoning Camana Bay development in Georgetown. WallGoldfinger is evalating several new projects in this growing commercial center.

Best known for its tables, WallGoldfinger is often asked to provide complementary casework. We couldn’t be more delighted to accept these invitations and, over the years, have developed a formidable reputation as a fabricator of these sometimes very complex pieces. WallGoldfinger does a tremendous amount of work in stone, both tables and case pieces. Over the years we have continuously decreased our mill’s energy consumption (through better insulation, glazing, and more efficient lighting), upgraded our equipment and manufacturing techniques (saving power and raw materials), and reduced emissions (winning state awards for pollution control in the process).
2007 brought WallGoldfinger’s certification by Smartwood as an FSC “Chain of Custody” manufacturer The FSC trademark provides recognition to firms who support responsible Every year, WallGoldfinger builds more and more tables which incorporate increasingly sophisticated electronic arrays. This example in New York, designed by Mancini Duffy for a major biopharmaceutical company, features 12 individually deployable monitors, a half dozen power and data fixture boxes and 24 microphones. All of these elements are located within a low riser, with the hatches and mic ports contained within a custom statuary bronze band. The primary cladding material is ribbon striped sapele veneer and durable solid mahogany is used on the table’s edges. Overall, the table measures 21’-8” L x 12’-11” W.
