Australia Day Honours 2009 ORDER OF AUSTRALIA COMPANION (AC) IN THE GENERAL DIVISION

Marilyn Darling AO for service to the development, advancement and growth of visual arts in Australia and internationally, particularly through the National Portrait Gallery, and to the community through philanthropic endeavours. It is not every day a scientist decides to trade her Petri dishes in for portraits, but for Marilyn Darling it has proven a valuable career move. Spending the past 20 years promoting visual art in the not-for-profit sector, Mrs Darling and her husband, Gordon, planted the idea of a national portrait gallery for Australia with their 1992 exhibition Uncommon Australians. In December last year she reached the ‘‘definite highlight’’ of her career with the official opening of the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra. Mrs Darling says her career at the portrait gallery has concluded, but she is far from retiring from the art scene, planning to spend more time focusing on the Gordon Darling Foundation. Professor Colin Sullivan AO for service to medicine as an innovator in the field of sleep disorders and the development of equipment and treatment practices. People across the world have Colin Sullivan to thank for peaceful nights. The University of Sydney professor revolutionised the treatment of obstructive sleep apnoea – and won praise from partners of snorers – when he established the first clinical sleep laboratory in Australia at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in 1979. A year later he invented the continuous positive airway pressure mask, now widely used in homes and hospitals. The mask was initially manufactured in the university’s laboratories, but is now made in San Diego by ResMed, a company founded by Professor Sullivan. ResMed last year notched up $261 million is sales. He was also responsible for establishing sleep disorders centres at the Children’s Hospital at Westmead and the Sydney Children’s Hospital. Arriving in Australia in 1970 as an ambitious teenager, this Boston-born singer wasted no time in firmly cementing herself as Australia’s Queen of Pop, winning the hearts of Australian audiences and critics along the way. Ms Hines broke the barriers from an early age. She was the youngest person ever to play a featured role in the famed musical Hair, and played the world’s first black Mary Magdalene in the musical Jesus Christ Superstar. With a dozen albums to her name and a series of musicals and tours under her belt, Ms Hines is also affiliated with numerous community groups and charities, including the Variety Club, Diabetes Australia, Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy Australia, the Golden Stave Music Foundation and World AIDS Day. She was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2007. Erin Somerville FEB 002

AS A girl, Wendy Whiteley was enthralled with the idea of a place where nobody could find her. ‘‘My favourite book was The Secret Garden. It was the story of a little girl who found a garden behind a thicket, a cubby hole where she could hide.’’ Given the media attention she has garnered from her famously volatile relationship with the artist Brett Whiteley, who died of a heroin overdose in 1992, it would be easy to think that as a grown-up she might still like a place to hide. But although Ms Whiteley is tired of talking about ‘‘the sex, drugs and rock’n’roll’’, the flamboyant 68-year-old and grand dame of Sydney’s art scene is not one to hold back. In 1995, she tired of looking across the tangled mountain of weeds, rubbish and broken drainage pipes that stood between her Lavender Bay house and the railway line, and decided to take charge. ‘‘I just got stubborn,’’ she says. ‘‘If it [the land] continued to be ignored, the bulldozers would have been in here tomorrow [to develop it].’’ With the help of two gardeners and the odd

backpacker, she has transformed the almost two hectares of RailCorp land into an oasis of verdant whimsy. A thatch of bamboo curves protectively over a small table and chairs, paths meander up terraced hills towards hidey holes, and old toys, railway parts and wheelbarrows rust gracefully among the foliage. The locals call it Wendy’s secret garden. ‘‘It allows children or people to have a secret spot where they can do their own dreaming,’’ she says. And she hopes her Order of Australia medal for gardening and visual arts will push the State Government to protect the garden, which has been leased for a year by North Sydney Council and was opened to the public in November. ‘‘It’s nice to be acknowledged, but only if it means having more than a medal. Hopefully it means the Government will bite the bullet and give the garden to the people and realise that the arts in this country, of any form, need support.’’ Ms Whiteley makes no distinction between the garden and her work with the Brett Whiteley Studio, which the Government bought in 1993. Both are art, she says.
