What is Biodiversity They are many different kinds of organism.
Scientist estimate that there is about 10 to 100 million kind of organism living on earth. Of these, only less than 2 million kind have been identified. The rest are yet to be discovered. Biodiversity is a wide variety of organisms on earth. We can see this diversity everywhere such as at local parks, forests, mountaintops and even deep down in the ocean.
Classification of Organisms Sorting organisms into groups is called
classification. As new organisms are discovered, new characteristics are used in classifying these organisms. As a result, over the years, the classification system has also gone through some changes. In classifications system used today, organisms are classified into 5 major groups called kingdoms. They are animals, plants, fungi, bacteria and very simple organisms
Classification Of Plants There is a large variety of plants living in
different habitat. Scientist have classified them into group because it is difficult to study them one by one. Plants belonging to the same classhave the same characteristic. There are classified like these…
Non- Flowering Plants
Monocotyledons They have fibrous roots. Their leaves have parallel veins. They are mostly herbaceous plants do not
have woody stems. Example:
Dicotyledons They have tap roots. Their leaves have network of veins. They are trees, shrubs or herbaceous
plants.
Classification Of Animals
Amphibians Amphibians are cool-blooded that can live both
on land and water. Most amphibians adults live on land. They return to the water only to lay eggs. The eggs are fertilised outside the female’s body (external fertilisation). The young amphibians live in water and breathe through their gills. The adults breathe with their lungs when on land and through their skin in water

Fish Fish have body that are well adapted for life
underwater. Their skin is covered with hard and slimy scales for protection. They have fins and tails to swim. They absorbed dissolved o2 in the water through their gills. Most of them lay eggs that are fertilised outside their bodies. Fish are cold-blooded animals. Their body temperature changes with their surrounding temperature.

Birds Birds are the only animals with feathers. They have beaks and wings but not all of them
can fly They breathe with their lungs. They are warm-blooded animals Their body temperature remains constant and does not changes with the environment. Their eggs, which are fertilised internally have hard shells are laid in their nests

Mammals Mammals are warm-blooded animals whose
bodies are covered with hair and fur. Their eggs are fertilised internally and their young develop inside the female body. All mammals except the duck-billed platypus and the spiny anteater, give birth to live young. Their young feet on milk from the mother’s mammary glands. Mammals breathe with their lungs. This include those living in the water dolphin and whales.

Different foods provides us with different materials Source of materials- We make houses, furniture, handicrafts from various plants Source of medicine- Both modern and traditional medicines make use of extracts from various plants and animals to treat and prevent diseases Clean water- Forest and wetlands filter again and again making it clean for us to drink, bathe and grow crops Air to breathe- Plants take in carbon dioxide from the air and release oxygen into it
