On Feb. 7, 1980, the first SEC women’s basketball tournament began play. It ended four days later with Tennessee defeating Ole Miss for the title. Fast forward 29 years later and the SEC Tournament is still enjoying success and increased popularity. Beginning with its inception and through 1986, the tournament was held at campus sites. The tournament was then sent to Albany, Ga., which served as the site for six years from 198792. The tournament then moved to Chattanooga, Tenn., where it was was held from 1993-2000, with the exception of 1998 when the tournament moved to Columbus, Ga. (2007, 2010). This year the SEC Women’s Basketball Tournament makes a return trip to Duluth Ga. and The Arena at Gwinnett Center. The winner of the 11-game tournament will receive the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The tournament seeds and conference champion will be determined by the 14-game regularseason SEC schedule. The top four seeds earn a first-round bye. The 2010 SEC Women’s Basketball Tournament will once again enjoy live television coverage. FS South continues its dedication to SEC events by televising all first round and all second round games. Team Notes Alabama Crimson Tide The Crimson Tide returns all of its starters from a year ago highlighted by SEC All-Freshman Team honoree Ericka Russell. Also back for the 2009-10 season is senior Dedrea Magee, who led the team in minutes last season, and junior Tierney Jenkins, who finished as the team’s top point-producer and rebounder. In addition, Alabama welcomes five newcomers to its lineup including 2009 NJCAA Third-Team AllAmerican LaToya King. King, a transfer from Seminole Community College, was a two-time Mid-Florida Conference First-Team selection while leading the Raiders in scoring, assists and steals. Rounding out the quintet of newcomers is redshirt freshman Candace Sykes, who sat out last season due to medical reasons, and true freshmen Jennifer Edwards, Celiscia Farmer and Jocelyn Shaw. Arkansas Razorbacks The 2009-10 edition of the Arkansas women’s basketball team returns a solid core of nationally-recognized players leading the Razorbacks into the season. C’eira Ricketts, Charity Ford and Lyndsay Harris all earned SEC honors with Ricketts picking up several national awards as well. Ford is the reigning SEC Sixth Woman of the Year while Ricketts was voted as the league’s co-freshman of the year. Harris earned selection to the SEC’s All-Freshman Team. Head Coach Tom Collen and his staff begin their third season at Arkansas and welcome four newcomers who are expected to have an immediate impact on the Razorbacks this season. A challenging non-conference schedule will prepare Arkansas for the always tough SEC slate that begins in January. Auburn Tigers Junior Alli Smalley is the only returning starter from last year’s squad that went 30-4 and won the team’s first SEC Championship in 20 years, but she will have some help with the return of redshirt junior Jordan Greenleaf, who sat out last season with an ACL injury. Smalley is the top returning scorer with 11.1 points per game last season, followed by Greenleaf who averaged 7.0 points and 5.0 rebounds in her five appearances before her injury. Reneisha Hobbs rounds out the three-member junior class after picking up 2.7 points and 1.7 rebounds per game last year. The lone senior on the 2009-10 squad is KeKe Carrier, who averaged 4.7 points, 3.1 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game. The bulk of the Tigers comes in the youth of the sophomore and junior class. Florida Gators The 2009-10 Gator roster consists of 14 players that features five seniors, as well as five newcomers. Florida enters the

2009-10 season with depth, balance, size, experience, athleticism, strength and leadership. All five seniors started at some point last year and their experience and leadership should be a strength of the 2009-10 squad; and all have proven to be confident, capable shooters from beyond the arc and aim to continue last year’s long-range success when the squad set the program record with 221 made three-pointers and a three-point shooting accuracy of 36.5 percent. Steffi Sorensen led the Gators’ record-setting long-range campaign by hitting a team-best 78 treys at a 39.2 percent clip. She averaged 9.2 points during the course of the season and is UF’s leading returning scorer in 2009-10. Georgia Lady Bulldogs The Lady Bulldogs return four starters and two more letterwinners from last year's squad. Seniors Ashley Houts and Angel Robinson led the SEC in minutes played and rebounding, respectively, in 2008-09 and will provide the nucleus for Georgia again this winter. Also back are starters Christy Marshall and Porsha Phillips, as well as reserves Jaleesa Rhoden and Meredith Mitchell. The Georgia roster also features seven newcomers who comprised a consensus top-five national recruiting class. Freshmen Anne Marie Armstrong, Jasmine Hassell, Jasmine James and Tamika Willis all were ranked among the nation's top-50 prospects by one or more recruiting service. Freshmen Ebony Jones and Candace Williams and junior college transfer Angie Criner also are expected to make impacts on the Lady Bulldogs' fortunes as well. Kentucky Wildcats Five returning veterans will join six highly touted newcomers as third-year Kentucky head coach Matthew Mitchell looks to lead his Wildcats to a school-record sixth consecutive postseason tournament in 2009-10. With only two seniors in Amani Franklin and Lydia Watkins, the Cats will look to their juniors for additional leadership. Heading that list is two-time All-SEC selection Victoria Dunlap. The 6-1 forward led the Wildcats in nearly every statistical category last season and has started in all 65 games of her career. Point guard Amber Smith, who dished out a team-high 114 assists in 2008-09, is back to direct the UK offense and guard Carly Morrow looks to again be a threat from three-point range after nailing a team-best 48 three-pointers last season. LSU Lady Tigers The LSU women’s basketball team returns four starters and nine letterwinners from a squad that reached the NCAA Tournament Second Round in 2009. Head coach Van

Team Notes Chancellor enters his third year at LSU, his 22nd overall and stands just 11 wins shy of 500 at the collegiate level. The entire core of last year’s team returns headlined by 2009-10 National Player of the Year candidate Allison Hightower. Hightower, a senior guard, led LSU is six categories and was fifth in the league in points per game with 14.9. Hightower is on watch lists for the Wade Trophy and the John Wooden Award. Reigning SEC Co-Freshman of the Year LaSondra Barrett returns as the team’s leading rebounder (5.7 rpg) a year ago. Ole Miss Rebels Ole Miss returns 81.3 percent of its scoring and 85.3 of its rebounding from last season and expectations are once again high in Oxford. Highlighting that group of returnees is senior guard Bianca Thomas. An All-SEC first team selection last season, Thomas finished the season fourth in the SEC with 15.8 points per game to go along with her 5.1 boards per game. In addition, Thomas ended the season with nine games in which she scored at least 20 points, including a career-high 31 points against Arkansas in the first round of the SEC Tournament. She also proved to be one of the top shooters in the conference, finishing sixth in the SEC with a 35.3 shooting percentage from beyond the arc. Mississippi State Lady Bulldogs There is optimism in Starkville, considering four starters and 11 total letterwinners return from last year. The team will have a veteran makeup as eight of those 11 returning are seniors. Leading the charge is first-team All-SEC performer Alexis Rack. The guard from Franklin, La., led MSU in scoring a year ago and was the recipient for the Gillom Award for Mississippi’s top collegiate female basketball player. Also returning for State are seniors Armelie Lumanu and Chanel Mokango who were both named to the All-SEC Defensive team a year ago. Lumanu paced the Lady Bulldogs in steals and was second in rebounding, assists and field goal percentage a year ago. Mokango set a school record with blocks in a season with 97, leading the SEC in that category last season. Seniors Marneshia Richard, Tysheka Grimes, Bethany Washington,Rima Kalonda and Channa Campbell also return along with junior Mary Kathryn Govero South Carolina Gamecocks South Carolina head coach Dawn Staley enters the 2009-10 season with the optimism befitting her youthful roster. The Gamecocks have talent but, without a single senior among them, there is plenty of work to be done to truly define the season’s outlook. Six letterwinners return from Staley’s inau-

gural squad, which started strong but struggled with injuries down the stretch. Among the group are three starters led by sophomore Lakeisha Sutton, who was a unanimous SEC AllFreshman selection in 2008-09 as the league’s highest-scoring freshman in conference play. Staley bolstered her squad with a top-five recruiting class that features center Kelsey Bone, who honed her game over the summer, helping the U.S. to a gold medal in the FIBA U19 World Championships in Thailand, and guard Ieasia Walker among the five additions. Tennessee Lady Volunteers For the first time in University of Tennessee Lady Volunteer basketball history, the team will be entering a season with a senior-less roster. The 36th edition of a UT Coach Pat Summitt team will feature three juniors, seven sophomores and three freshmen on the court in 2009-10. The most experienced returnee will be 6’0”junior guard Angie Bjorklund (12.3 ppg, 3.0 rpg), who earned Second Team All-SEC honors in 2009 after being named SEC Rookie of the Year in 2008. The Spokane Valley, Wash., native enters the season already in seventh place in the Big Orange annals in three pointers made with 130 and has started in 55 of 66 career games. Sophomore Shekinna Stricklen (13.3 ppg, 5.9 rpg), a 6’2” combo guard/forward will look to improve upon an outstanding freshman year in which she was a unanimous selection to the 2009 SEC All-Freshman Team, as well as being named Freshman of the Year by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association. Vanderbilt Commodores The Vanderbilt women's basketball team is coming off its sixth SEC Tournament championship and 14th appearance in the NCAA Sweet 16. The Commodores have three starters back from last year's squad, while also getting a boost from the return of center Hannah Tuomi from a season-ending injury in February. Head Coach Melanie Balcomb's team has ranked in the NCAA's Top 15 in field-goal percentage in each of the past seven years, and her up-tempo offense will be on display again this year. Despite the loss of seniors Christina Wirth, Jennifer Risper and Amy Malo, Vanderbilt will again look to set the tone of each game defensively to create scoring opportunities in transition. Senior guard Merideth Marsh is the team's leading returning scorer by total points, though Tuomi averaged a higher point per game before her injury.

SEC Begins 28th Season Of Conference Play This will be the 28th season of conference play for the SEC. Women’s basketball first came under the auspices of the SEC in the 1982-83 season. Games played between SEC teams before that time are not counted in the all-time SEC standings, since there was no uniform number of conference games played prior to that time.
