2010 SEC Tournament March 11-14 • Sommet Center • Nashville, Tenn. The 2010 Southeastern Conference Men's Basketball Tournament returns to the Sommet Center in Nashville. It will be the third time that the arena has served as the host of the SEC Tournament, having also hosted in 2001 and 2006. The Sommet Center, which also is the home of the NHL’s Nashville Predators, opened in December 1996 and has hosted more than 12 million guests. It has become Nashville’s No. 1 venue for large-scale musical productions, as well as one of the nation’s most highly acclaimed entertainment and sports venues. Seating capacity is approximately 18,160 for basketball games. The winner of the 11-game tournament receives the SEC's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The tournament seeds, conference championship and division titles are determined by the 16-game conference schedule during the regular season. Teams are seeded by their divisional finish and features Eastern Division-Western Division matchups in every game should the higher seed win each contest. Atlanta served as host of the inaugural SEC Tournament played following the 1932-33 season and did so again after the 1933-34 season. The event was held every year through 1952, with the exception of 1935. After a 26-year layoff (1953-78), the tournament was renewed in 1979. The 2010 tournament will be the 51st in league history and the 32nd since the renewal. The SEC has shown extraordinary balance in the tournament, evidenced by the fact that a different school won the first seven titles after the renewal. The event has helped set the stage for SEC teams in the NCAA Tournament, as 22 of the last 29 tournament champions have advanced to at least the Sweet 16 with five of the last 13 going on to win the national championship. Since the renewal in 1979, the SEC Tournament Champion has failed to win at least one NCAA Tournament game only four times. Kentucky leads the league with 25 SEC Tournament titles. Alabama is second with six, while Tennessee ranks third with four. Florida and Mississippi State each have three championship trophies. Arkansas, Auburn, Georgia, LSU, Ole Miss, Vanderbilt and former league member Georgia Tech have each won one SEC Tournament championship.
Media Predicts Kentucky as 2010 SEC Champion Kentucky was predicted to win the 2010 Southeastern Conference men’s basketball championship in a voting by a select panel of both SEC and national media members. Each SEC school selected media members that cover their team and additional writers from across the nation were selected by the conference office to form the 25-member voting panel. The Wildcats are coming off a 22-14 season and an appearance in the NIT. They earned 20 first-place votes, topping Mississippi State which earned three votes and Tennessee which had two votes as SEC Champion. Kentucky was the media’s favorite to win the East with 148 total points (23 first-place votes), ahead of second-place Tennessee’s 117 points (two firstplace). Vanderbilt, South Carolina, Florida and Georgia round out the top six. In the West, Mississippi State’s 144 total points (22 first-place votes) were ahead of Ole Miss’ 120 points (two first-place ). Alabama was picked third with 84 points. LSU, Arkansas and Auburn round out the top six in the West.

SEC Highlights • For the first time in league history, each of the 96 conference games will be televised live as part of the SEC’s historic 15-year agreements with CBS Sports and ESPN that begin this year. Almost half of the SEC’s league games will be distributed nationally with ESPN or ESPN2 televising 27 contests, ESPNU showing eight and CBS Sports five. The SEC’s games on the ESPN family of networks will be exclusively branded as the “SEC on ESPN.” • National coverage of the SEC Basketball Tournament has been expanded with the semifinals and championship game broadcast on ESPN on ABC. The SEC Network will televise the first two rounds of the tournament which this year will be played March 11-14 in Nashville. • Florida’s Billy Donovan will be honored with the John R. Wooden Award’s “Legends of Coaching Award” at the Los Angeles Athletic Club in April of 2010. • The SEC/Big East Invitational returns for a third season and will feature four games in two days. Opening the event is Georgia vs. St. John’s and Kentucky vs. Connecticut in New York City Dec. 9. The following night will showcase Mississippi State vs. DePaul and Florida vs. Syracuse in Tampa, Fla. • Three SEC players active in 2009-10 have recorded triple-doubles, including two that accomplished the feat last season. Arkansas sophomore Courtney Fortson recorded the second triple-double in school history when he had 20 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists against North Carolina Central on Dec. 10, 2008. Tyler Smith became the first player in Tennessee history to record a tripledouble when he had 12 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists against UNC Asheville Dec. 3, 2008. Mississippi State’s Jarvis Varnado recorded a triple-double with 10 points, 12 rebounds and 10 blocks against Kentucky in 2007-08. • According to KenPom.com, in 2008-09 eight of the Southeastern Conference’s 12 teams ranked among the 90 (out of 344 total) youngest teams in the nation. Ole Miss (344), Arkansas (340), Vanderbilt (338), Mississippi State (321) and Florida (312) each rank among the 35 youngest squads. • Throughout the history of men’s college basketball, the Southeastern Conference has captured 10 NCAA Championships and four NIT titles, putting the SEC as one of the nation’s top basketball conferences. • Of the 60 starters at the 2009 SEC Tournament, only 11 were seniors. • The SEC won 72.6 percent (135-51) of its non-conference games in 2008-09, including 54 of its last 74 games. • Two SEC schools ranked in the top four nationally in attendance for 200809. Kentucky led the nation with an average of 22,239 fans per game and Tennessee was fourth nationally with an average of 20,483 per game. Syracuse was second in the nation in attendance at 21,044 and North Carolina was third with 21,035. Kentucky has led the nation in attendance 13 of the last 14 seasons. • The SEC individual statistics were dominated by youth in 2008-09. Among the league’s statistical leaders, only five of the top 30 scorers, five of the top 30 rebounders and two of the top 15 assist-men were seniors. • Every team in the SEC has made at least one NCAA Tournament appearance in the last seven editions of the NCAA Tournament. • The SEC is one of just two conferences in the nation to have all of its teams ranked at least one week in the Associated Press top 25 (excluding preseason polls) since 1999-00. Simply stated, every SEC team has been a top-25 team nationally at one point in the last 10 seasons. The ACC is the only other conference that can make this claim.
Seven SEC Players On Preseason Wooden List Seven SEC players have been named preseason candidates for the 200910 John R. Wooden Award All-American Team and Player of the Year trophy, announced Wednesday, August 19, by Richard “Duke” Llewellyn, Wooden Award Chairman and founder. SEC players on the list are: South Carolina's Devan Downey, LSU's Tasmin Mitchell, A.J. Ogilvy of Vanderbilt, Kentucky's Patrick Patterson, Tennessee's Tyler Smith, Mississippi State's Jarvis Varnado and Ole Miss Terrico White. The list of candidates is comprised of 50 student-athletes who, based on last year's individual performance and team records, are the early frontrunners for college basketball's most prestigious honor. In late December, the Wooden Award Committee will release the Midseason Top 30 list, followed in March by the National Ballot, consisting of approximately 20 top players who have proven to their universities that they are also making progress toward graduation and maintaining a cumulative 2.0 GPA. The Wooden Award All-American Team will be announced the week of the “Elite Eight” round during the NCAA Tournament. The 34th annual Wooden Award ceremony, which will include the announcement of the Men's and Women's Wooden Award winner, and the presentation of the Wooden Award All-American Teams and the Legends of Coaching Award, will take place the weekend of April 9-11, 2010. Eight SEC Players On Preseason Naismith List Eight Southeastern Conference men’s basketball student-athletes were among the 50 players on the Naismith 2009-10 preseason watch list, the Atlanta Tipoff Club announced on Oct. 29. Included among the SEC’s candidates are: South Carolina’s Devan Downey, LSU’s Tasmin Mitchell, Vanderbilt’s A.J. Ogilvy, Kentucky’s Patrick Patterson, Tennessee’s Tyler Smith, Mississippi State’s Jarvis Varnado, Kentucky’s John Wall and Ole Miss’ Terrico White. The watch list was compiled by the Atlanta Tipoff Club’s Board of Selectors, which based its criteria on player performances from the previous year and expectations for the 2009-10 college basketball season. The Naismith Trophy presented by AT&T will be awarded at the 2010 NCAA Men’s Final Four in Indianapolis, Ind. In late February, the Atlanta Tipoff Club’s Board of Selectors will compile a mid-season team of the Top 30 players in the nation. Then in March, the Naismith Trophy voting academy will vote to narrow the list to the four finalists. Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award Candidates South Carolina’s Devan Downey and Tennessee’s Tyler Smith - student-athletes who excel both on and off the court - have been tabbed as candidates for the 2009-10 Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – classroom, character, community and competition. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School™, the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. The list of 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one finalist who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of classroom, character, community and competition.

Record Attendance, Again The SEC posted the largest attendance season attendance in league history, totaling 2,638,852 fans for games featuring SEC teams in 2008-09. It marks the third consecutive year more than 2.5 million fans witnessed SEC basketball. A then-record 2,562,073 fans saw SEC basketball in 2006-07 and 2,561,545 were in attendance for the 2007-08 season. Poll Worthy The SEC is the one of just two conferences in the nation to have all of its teams ranked at least one week in the Associated Press top 25 (excluding preseason polls) since 1999-00. Simply stated, every SEC team has been a top25 team nationally at one point in the last nine seasons. A look at SEC teams in the AP top 25 show the league’s diversity since the 2000 season. SECond To None During the 2006-07 academic year the Southeastern Conference became the first conference to win the Division I National Championship in Football (Florida), Men’s Basketball (Florida) and Women’s Basketball (Tennessee) in the same school year. Only the SEC and the Big East have ever won both the men’s and women’s basketball titles in one season. SEC won both three times in 1996, 1998 and 2007. The Big East has won both twice in 2003 and 2004. The SEC swept both the NIT and NCAA Tournaments in 2006 when Florida won its first NCAA championship and South Carolina earned its second straight NIT title. Only four conferences have won both the NIT and NCAA title, including the Big East (2003), ACC (1992) and Big Ten (1979)

Head Coach: John Pelphrey 37-28 in 3rd year at Arkansas 117-95 in 8th year as a head coach
Anthony Grant takes over the reins of the Crimson Tide after three extremely successful seasons at VCU where he led the Rams to three-straight postseason appearances (2 NCAA, 1 NIT), three CAA regular season titles and two CAA Tournament titles. Grant is no stranger to the SEC, serving as an assistant and then associate head coach for a combined 10 seasons at Florida (19962006). Grant has the luxury of returning four starters from last year’s Alabama team that closed out the 2008-09 regular season with four wins in five games. Three other players return from last season, with the exception of forward Demetrius Jemison who will miss the season with an Achilles tendon injury suffered on September 26. JaMychal Green enters his sophomore season after earning unanimous SEC All-Freshman honors last season. Green averaged 10.3 points and 7.6 rebounds with seven double-doubles. Six of his doubledoubles came against SEC competition, trailing only Auburn’s Korvotney Barber for the most double-doubles against league competition. Green also led all SEC freshmen in efficiency and was 10th in the nation in the category. Three-point shooting was not one of Alabama’s strengths last season until the latter half of the season when Anthony Brock continued to convert from behind the arc at a 44.9 percent clip. His season percentage would have easily led the league if he had the requisite number of attempts to be including in the league standings. Helping him on the perimeter will be junior college transfer Charvez Davis who made 163 three-pointers in two seasons at Northwest Florida State College (formerly Okaloosa-Walton).

The Razorbacks are a more experienced team this winter than they were a year ago. Last season Arkansas started three freshmen (two true freshmen and a redshirt). Those three along with seniors Michael Washington and Stefan Welsh and junior Marcus Britt should give the Razorbacks what they need to be better late in games where the Hogs failed to finish a year ago. Arkansas is a deeper team with the addition of five key players from the high school and JUCO ranks to go along with five returning starters. Arkansas has something to build on from last season’s pair of wins over top 10-ranked teams. The Razorbacks took down then No. 4-ranked Oklahoma and No. 7-ranked Texas over a eight-day span last season before struggling during SEC play. Sophomore Rotnei Clarke was named the top shooter in the country by Foxsports.com prior to the start of the season. As a true freshman, Clarke hit 39.3 percent of his three-point attempts and averaged 12.2 points and 1.9 rebounds over 31.5 minutes per game. He was the top shooting three-point freshman in the nation and No. 2 in the SEC overall. Senior Michael Washington returned to campus after testing the NBA draft waters and that is a significant boost to the Razorback lineup. Not only was the 6-9 center/forward a second-team all-SEC performer a year ago, but he averaged 9.8 rebounds per game to lead the SEC.

Auburn enters the 42nd and final season of Beard-Eaves-Memorial Coliseum with excitement after recording the second most wins in Auburn history with last year’s 24-12 Tigers. The Tigers return three starters in leading scorer DeWayne Reed, leading three-point shooter Tay Waller and Lucas Hargrove off a team that came within a game of reaching the NIT Final Four. Mix the senior starting trio in with sophomore guard Frankie Sullivan, 6-foot-10 senior center Brendon Knox, forward Johnnie Lett, Oklahoma transfer Tony Neysmith and a very impressive recruiting class, and the Tigers look to close out the Coliseum in style. Reed ranked third in the SEC with 1.9 steals, sixth with 3.7 assists and 17th in scoring at 13.2 points per game. He averaged 16.0 points and 3.7 rebounds in the NIT. Waller averaged 12.1 points last year and ranked second in the SEC making 100 three-point field goals, which also ranked second on Auburn's single-season chart. He ranked third in the SEC shooting 36.8 percent from three-point range and finished the season strong as he averaged 13.8 points and shot 42.5 percent from three-point range in the final 12 games. Highly-rated newcomers will provide Auburn an immediate boost in 6foot-8 Paris (Texas) Junior College transfer Kenny Gabriel, three-time first-team Class AAA All-State selection Andre Malone, two-time first-team Class 4A AllState pick Earnest Ross, 6-foot-10 freshman Rob Chubb and 6-foot-9 freshman Ty Armstrong.

Florida returns four players with starting experience led by senior Dan Werner, the last link the Gators' national championship team of 2007. The theme for the Gators in 2009-10 will be players playing in their natural positions. Erving Walker will slide over from the two guard spot to the point, Dan Werner will be able to play more of the small forward, Alex Tyus slides back to the more natural power forward from center and transfer Vernon Macklin will play the five. Walker knocked down 70 three-pointers a year ago, the most by a UF freshman since Anthony Roberson set a UF freshman record of 74 in 2002-03. While not a strong rebounding team a year ago, Florida brings back 76.1 percent of its rebounding and adds 6-10/240 lb transfer Vernon Macklin. The Gators have six frontcourt players that are 6-8 or bigger, its largest lineup since 2007. The Gators have won 261 games this decade, the most of any SEC school and the fifth-highest total in the nation

Head Coach: John Calipari 0-0 in 1st year at Kentucky 445-140 in 18th year as a head coach
Mark Fox became the 21st head basketball coach in the history of the University of Georgia on April 3, 2009. The native Kansan arrived in Athens after five successful seasons in a similar capacity at the University of Nevada, which played in the postseason in each of those five years. During Fox’s fiveyear tenure as head coach, Nevada won at least 21 games each season, won or shared four straight WAC titles and played in three consecutive NCAA Tournaments. He was named the WAC Coach of the Year three times. Foremost among the multiple early-season tasks for Fox is to create some offense. The Bulldogs in 2009 ranked 12th in the SEC in scoring at 64.9 points per game, the second-lowest figure by a Georgia team in the past 50 years. Finding points among this group could prove challenging. Thirty-eight percent of those 65 points per game is gone, largely with leading scorer Terrance Woodbury. A likely starting point toward this goal will be to minimize turnovers. Georgia hasn’t had a positive assist/turnover ratio since the 2003 season. The only returning player on the 2010 squad with a positive ratio last year was point guard Dustin Ware. Sophomore Howard “Trey” Thompkins had a productive summer of 2009. The Lithonia, Ga., native was selected in late May to the U.S. team that played in the FIBA Under 19 World Championships in Auckland, New Zealand, where the Americans won the gold medal in convincing fashion. Thompkins started five of the nine games and averaged 10.6 points — second-best on the team — and 5.0 rebounds, shooting 54 percent from the field. His 22 points in a fourth-round victory over Greece was the single highest offensive output by the Americans during the tournament.

Kentucky, the NCAA’s all-time winningest program, is 12 wins shy from becoming the first team to reach 2,000 victories. North Carolina is second with 1,984 wins. Kentucky will open up a new era of basketball with one of the most successful coaches over the last decade. John Calipari, a two-time NCAA Final Four coach, will take over the reins of the Kentucky program after amassing the most wins (137) over a four-year span in NCAA Division I history during his last four years at Memphis. Kentucky faces numerous challenges in year one of the John Calipari era – namely meshing six new player with seven returners from last year’s 22-win team. Kentucky has hauled in the Rivals.com No. 1 recruiting class in the country. Headlining the recruiting class is the highly touted point guard John Wall, the consensus No. 1 high school player in the 2009 recruiting class. Top-50 recruits Eric Bledsoe, DeMarcus Cousins, Daniel Orton, Jon Hood will join Wall, in addition to returning veterans Ramon Harris, Perry Stevenson, DeAndre Liggins and FIBA U-19 World Championships gold medalist Darius Miller. Kentucky will be led by two-time All-Southeastern Conference selection and preseason SEC Player of the Year and Wooden Trophy award candidate Patrick Patterson. The junior forward turned down a likely first-round NBA draft selection to graduate in three years, improve his overall game under John Calipari and win an NCAA championship.

LSU goes from one of the oldest teams in the league in 2009-10 to one of the younger teams in the SEC. Tasmin Mitchell, who is considered the team leader as he is one of just two seniors, is one of just nine players to start on two SEC championship teams. The Denham Springs, La., native came back for a fifth season instead of going to the NBA. The Tigers have very little margin for error with injuries and youth of the team. Point guard Bo Spencer surprised many with his scoring ability last year was a big plus as he adapted to Trent Johnson’s system. Aaron Dotson, a native of Seattle, Wash., has good chance to play early at off guard position. Dotson has a lot of talent but is coming off minor knee surgery during his senior year in high school.

Three Rebels who missed all or most of the 2008-09 season with serious knee injuries - Trevor Gaskins, Eniel Polynice and Chris Warren - were cleared for full activity in June and July. Zach Graham, who had surgery on his knee following the season, was cleared to return to action in September. Ole Miss may boast one of the nation’s deepest and most talented backcourts in 2009-10. In addition to the return of the three injured players (which includes 2008-09 Preseason All-SEC point guard Chris Warren), the Rebels return the 2009 SEC Freshman of the Year, Terrico White, and a full-time starter from last year in Graham. They boast scoring averages of 19.6 ppg (Warren), 13.7 (White), 10.7 (Polynice), 8.5 (Graham) and 5.9 (Gaskins) in each of their most recent campaigns. A new $13 million, 51,000-square-foot basketball practice facility that will be the day-to-day home of the men’s and women’s teams has been constructed on campus and will be ready for the teams to move into during December. White is a preseason candidate for the 2009-10 John R. Wooden Award and a member of the Gold Medal-winning U.S. squad at the 2009 FIBA U19 World Championships in New Zealand this summer. The Rebel frontcourt will be younger and less experienced. The top returning big men are sophomore Murphy Holloway (8.4 ppg, 6.6 rpg) and senior DeAundre Cranston (JUCO transfer last year 3.1 ppg, 4.2 rpg). Freshman Reginald Buckner, who holds the all-time record for blocked shots in Tennessee high school basketball, should also make an immediate impact.

Mississippi State returns all five starters and its top three reserves from a team that won the SEC Tournament. The Bulldogs lost Twany Beckham, a backup point guard, for the season due to severe bone spurs in both hips. Jarvis Varnado, a preseason Woodean Award candidate and first team All-SEC selection, is just 141 blocks shy of tying the NCAA career mark and 18 shy of tying the SEC mark set by Shaquille O'Neal. This is one of the more experienceladen teams Rick Stansbury has ever had. Incoming freshman Renardo Sidney still hasn't been cleared by the NCAA. John Riek is coming along faster on the floor than maybe most expected. Barry Stewart has a chance to become the school's all-time three-point shooter. Rick Stansbury currently has 231 victories. The rest of the coaches in the West have a combined 206.

South Carolina returns four starters and eight letterwinners from its 2009 SEC East Co-Championship team, including a trio of All-SEC performers in senior point guard Devan Downey (All-SEC First Team, coaches/media; All-SEC Defensive Team/coaches), senior forward Dominique Archie (All-SEC Second Team, coaches; All-SEC Honorable Mention, media; All-SEC Defensive Team, coaches) and senior guard Brandis Raley-Ross (SEC Sixth Man of the Year, coaches). South Carolina head men’s basketball coach Darrin Horn enters his second season at the helm of the Gamecock program ranked as the No. 22 winningest active coach (by percentage, .695) in NCAA Division I men’s basketball. Several Gamecocks currently rank in the career record chart in various categories. Downey needs just 81 steals to surpass Chuck Eidson (272) for the most all time, while Archie is currently tied for 10th all time with 86 career blocks. Evka Baniulis currently ranks second in three-point career percentage (.430) and Raley-Ross is sixth on the chart with a .377 career three-point percentage. South Carolina welcomes five newcomers to the court this season. Freshmen Ramon Galloway, Lakeem Jackson and Stephen Spinella, while also adding junior college transfer Johndre Jefferson and walk-on Malik Cooke to its 2009-10 roster. Due to NCAA transfer rules, Cooke will not be eligible to play this season.

Head Coach: Kevin Stallings 189-128 in 11th year at Vanderbilt 312-191 in 17th year as a head coach
In four seasons under head coach Bruce Pearl, the Volunteers have led the league in scoring four times, won more regular-season SEC games than any other league school, reached a pair of Sweet Sixteens, won three SEC Eastern Division crowns and attained a No. 1 national ranking. The Vols return all five starters from last season’s SEC Eastern Division championship team that posted a 21-13 overall record and advanced to the SEC Tournament championship game. The four senior starters—Wayne Chism, Bobby Maze, J.P. Prince and Tyler Smith—combine to boast 16 games worth of NCAA Tournament experience. The fifth starter, sophomore guard Scotty Hopson, made the SEC AllFreshman Team a year ago. Coach Pearl intends to restore the pressing, uptempo style of play that helped lead UT to back-to-back Sweet Sixteen berths in 2007 and 2008. Tennessee’s lack of experience at the guard position led to an uncharacteristic slower pace of play in 2008-09. The Vols’ 1,196 steals over the past four seasons are the most in the SEC. Coach Pearl believes the Vols will display a marked improvement at the point guard position this season and has admitted to not trusting his point guards enough at certain times last year. Maze is a scoring point guard who Pearl believes has benefitted from spending a full year in the UT system, building chemistry. Newcomer Melvin Goins, a junior transfer from Mt. San Jacinto [Calif.] College, has earned a reputation as a tremendous defender who can also penetrate into the lane and set up his teammates offensively.

All five starters and 14 letterwinners return from the 2008-09 team. A.J. Ogilvy made the All-SEC second team for the second straight year, and Jeffery Taylor was named to the All-SEC Freshman team for their exploits on the floor. Ogilvy was named to the All-SEC second team by the league’s coaches and was an honorable mention selection by the league’s media after averaging 15.4 points and 7.1 rebounds per game, both team highs. The Commodores finished with a 19-12 overall record and an 8-8 record in SEC play, but missed the postseason for the first time since the 2002-03 season and only the second time in the Kevin Stallings era, which began prior to the 1999-00 season. However, the Commodores were the eighth-least experienced team in the nation in 2008-09 according to KenPom.com, and the team won eight out of its last 11 regular season games, including a win over SEC regular champion LSU in Baton Rouge on March 4. Vanderbilt had two freshman double digit scorers for first time since 1977. Taylor and Brad Tinsley both averaged double digits at 12.2 and 10.7 points per game, respectively, the first time since 1977 that VU has had a true freshman scoring tandem. Charles Davis (15.3) and Greg Fuller (10.8) accomplished the feat in 1977.
