SEC WOMEN‘S SOCCER

SEC TOURNAMENT The 2009 Southeastern Conference Women’s Soccer Tournament returns to the Orange Beach Sportsplex in Orange Beach, Ala. It will be seventh time that the facility has served as the host of the SEC Tournament, having hosted each event since the 2003 season. The format of the tournament is a single-elimination tournament of the top eight teams in the Conference based on winning percentage of Conference games (regardless of division). The tournament shall be played in a Wednesday-FridaySunday format with Thursday and Saturday designated as days off (practice days). The winner of the seven-game tournament receives the SEC’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer Championship. The 2009 SEC Tournament will be the 17th in league history and the seventh in Orange Beach. The first 10 SEC Tournaments were played at campus sites with Vanderbilt serving as the inaugural host in 1993. The tournament returned to Nashville in 1999. It has also been played at Fayetteville (1994), Auburn (1995), Lexington (1996), Gainesville (1997), Tuscaloosa (1998), Athens (2000), Baton Rouge (2001) and Oxford (2002). Florida leads the league with eight SEC Tournament titles. Tennessee is second with four while Kentucky and Vanderbilt each have two championships. Points System: A win counts as three points, a tie as one and a loss as zero points. If a game is canceled, neither team will receive a point and the standings will be determined by average points per game. The two teams in each division with the highest number of points will be the divisional champions. Tie Breaker Procedure: The tournament will be seeded 1-8 regardless of division based on the point system implemented to determine regular season standings (win counts as three points, a tie as one and a loss as zero points). If teams are tied, the following procedure, in the following order, will be used to break the tie: 1. Head-to-head competition; 2. Goal differential in all conference games; 3. Goals scored in all conference games; and 4. Coin flip or draw.

Arkansas closes the regular season on Friday with the home game against LSU. Four Razorback seniors will be honored prior to the game - Kat Moffett, Kathleen Paulsen, Kim Schleif and Sophie Wentz. Sunday's game against No. 12 Florida marked the school-record third straight for the Razorbacks against a ranked opponent following contests against No. 21 Ole Miss and at No. 10 South Carolina. Defenders Schleif, Kailey Anders and Kelly O'Connor are the only Razorbacks to start all 18 games this year. If Arkansas finishes at .500 or better this year, it will give the Razorbacks, who were 11-8 a year ago, non-losing seasons for the first time since 1992 (8-8-1) and 1993 (10-10-0). Keeper Britni Williams is Arkansas' all-time leader with 22 shutouts and she's second with 26 victories. Arkansas has recorded a school-record 10 shutouts this season, including a school-record four in SEC play.

Auburn clinched its ninth consecutive SEC Tournament berth last week, picking up wins at Tennessee and at home over Georgia. The win at Tennessee was Auburn’s first ever in Knoxville. Caitlin King picked up two assists in the match to give her seven on the season and 25 for her career, which is third all-time at Auburn. Auburn claimed its first win over a Top 25 team since 2007 when it defeated No. 19 Georgia in the final home match of the season. Rebecca Howell scored a pair of unassisted goals in the match, giving her two game-winners on the weekend and a career-high seven goals on the season. The pair of goals upped her career total to 21 on the season, becoming just the seventh player in Auburn history to top the 20-goal mark. Amy Howard upped her league-leading save total to 101 with 11 saves over the weekend. Auburn will travel to Tuscaloosa this weekend to face Alabama.

The Tigers battled Ole Miss to a 0-0 draw on Friday before thrashing Mississippi State by a score of 4-0 on Sunday. For their performance, LSU moved into a tie for first place in SEC play. By scoring a pair of goals against the Bulldogs, Carlie Banks was named the SEC Freshman of the Week for the second time this season. Banks is SEC’s leading goal scorer in conference play as she has scored six goals in league action this season. Mo Isom made history with a pair of shutouts this weekend as she now has 16 clean sheets for her young career, which sets a new all-time career record at LSU. The Tigers will look to continue their run toward an SEC championship this weekend as they travel to Gainesville, Fla., on Thursday night to battle the Florida before returning home to play host to the South Carolina Gamecocks on Sunday.

After a dominating 4-1 win at Kentucky on Thursday, in which the Rebels scored their most goals against an SEC team since 2006 and were the first UK opponent to tally more than two this season, the Rebels had their six-match unbeaten streak snapped with a 1-0 home loss to Vanderbilt. At UK, Dylan Jordan and Hannah Weatherly each collected a pair of goals. It was the first two-goal performance of Jordan’s career, while Weatherly moved into sole possession of the team lead with eight goals this season, the most by a Rebel since Brittney Potts had 10 in 2004. The Rebels close the season next weekend with a pair of home games against Mississippi State (Friday) and a makeup game vs. Alabama (Sunday) before the start of the SEC Tournament next Wednesday.

South Carolina set program records for overall and SEC wins in a season with Thursday’s 2-0 shutout of Arkansas. Kayla Grimsley scored a goal and registered an assist in the game to move her totals this season to 10 goals and five assists for 25 points. She becomes just the fifth player in USC history to register a 10-goal season. Kortney Rhoades hit the game-winner. USC was then shutout for the first time this season, 1-0, at No. 14 LSU with a goal 57 seconds in – the quickest goal scored on Carolina in over three seasons. The Gamecocks travel to No. 12 Florida Friday for the regular season finale in a game that will decide the SEC East champion. South Carolina is one of three teams with a shot at claiming the overall SEC title – a win Friday coupled with an LSU loss or tie against Arkansas will give the Gamecocks their first ever title.

Tennessee secured its 12th consecutive berth to the annual SEC Tournament by downing Alabama, 2-0, on Sunday. UT had previously dropped a 3-1 decision to Auburn in Knoxville on Thursday.Mick Imgram continued her production by scoring single goals in both matches, improving her league-leading total to 12 goals overall with eight of those scores coming during SEC action. The Clifton, Va., native granted UT a first half lead versus the Tigers on a perfect corner kick that literally bent into the top left corner and secured the match with the Crimson Tide by beating the keeper to her left from about 10 yards out. Her 12 goals tie her for the third-best singleseason total in Tennessee history, while the 25 career goals move Imgram into a tie for seventh in UT’s career annals. Amy Harrison scored her second goal of the campaign at Alabama.

Vanderbilt went 2-0 on the week with shutout wins over Mississippi State, 3-0, and No. 17 Ole Miss 1-0. The Commodores have won three in a row and vaulted from 11th in the league standings to eighth entering the final weekend of play. The Kinsella sisters, Megan and Molly, both scored in Thursday’s win over MSU. Candace West scored her first goal of the season in the win over the Bulldogs. Kate Goldin scored the gamewinner over Ole Miss. She has come on strong while coming back from a knee injury that required surgery and caused her to redshirt a year ago. VU reached the double digit win plateau for the first time since the 2006 season. The team has recorded three straight shutouts and now has eight on the year. Goalkeeper Rachel Bachtel has been in net for all three and has 10 saves in the three shutout wins. VU will close out the regular season at home against Kentucky on Friday.
