TOTAL SMOKING BAN ENTERS FORCE Croatia has started with a complete ban on smoking from Wednesday the 6th of May. Smoking at bars will only be allowed on terraces, while restaurants would have the possibility of allocating a separate room for smokers. Also, the bill ban smoking on all work places. Smoking has

already been banned in health, social institutional and education facilities. The new bill also introduces a special health warning on every pack of cigarettes. Health Minister Darko Milinovic said with the new law the government want to change people’s smoking habits and protect nonsmokers.

SUNDAY SHOPPING STARTS ON 1st JUNE The new Croatian Sunday-shopping law allows all shops to be open on Sundays from 1 June to 1 October. Numerous merchants remain dissatisfied, however, since their shops will be able to stay open only until 2 pm on Sundays. The merchants claim early Sunday closings will make it impossible for them to recoup daily expenses and Sunday openings will therefore be unprofitable. They also say it will be impossible to explain to tourists why their shops must close at 2 pm. The new regulation could affect furniture and home-furnishing stores at shopping malls more than others since people tend to visit them in the afternoon or the evening. The new law banning Sunday shopping, which partially exempts Sunday closures during the summer tourist season, entered into force on 1 January. Numerous shopping malls, markets and supermarkets have failed in their efforts to have the law repealed.

Mark Thomas [email protected] Welcome to our beautiful city and to the eighth edition of the second season of “The Sibenik Times”. What a difference a road makes. The joy of the open road, nothing behind you and the way ahead clear as the eye can see speeding along without a care in the world. Normally this situation would be pretty much impossible in Dalmatia at this time of the year where, unless you drive in the middle of the night, the roads are packed with sweating and swearing motorists. I’ve been running up and down Dalmatia this week, from Dubrovnik to Split and onto Sibenik. This however was pretty unattainable a few years ago before the construction of the A1 highway. Just being able to travel from Dubrovnik to Sibenik inside four hours was impossible in the past when all we had was a single track coastal road that was busy at all times of the year and resembled a car park in the summer season. The highway has opened up Dalmatia and brought cities closer. I saw a good example of this a few months ago when I met coincidentally some friends from Dubrovnik who were on their way to Split to “drink a coffee.” Strangely the highway is never really busy in fact it would be better described as half empty all the time and the last section towards Dubrovnik is almost completely empty through all the seasons. I don’t really see the reason why. It surely can’t be because of the relatively small toll fees. Not only has it connected Sibenik to the rest of Dalmatia it’s also made the capital at lot closer. A mere three hour drive from Sibenik to Zagreb would have been unthinkable a few years ago. Open roads, combined with plenty of stops and service stations for the thirsty driver make the whole experience pleasant.

CROATIA LIFTS VISA RESTRICTIONS FOR MANY FOREIGN DIPLOMATS The Croatian government has lifted restrictions on visas for holders of diplomatic and official passports issued by Kosovo, Peru, Kazakhstan and Colombia. The government, which brought in the initiative yesterday (Thurs), also lifted restrictions on visas for holders of Algerian diplomatic passports. Croatian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration spokesman Mario Dragun told Hina news agency that visa restrictions on holders of ordinary passports issued by Peru and Colombia had also been lifted. The visa regimes for Kosovo residents who want to visit

Croatia for tourism, business or family visits remain unchanged. Kosovo has repeatedly requested the lifting of restrictions on visas for visits to Croatia in light of the two countries’ good bilateral relationship. Croatia has already opened an embassy in Pristina, and Kosovo is planning to open an embassy in Zagreb. According to the Pristina media, there have been a record number of applications for positions at Kosovo’s future embassy in Zagreb, compared to the number of candidates for positions at the other 19 embassies the Kosovo government is planning to open in foreign countries.

It is likely there will be a late holiday booking market this year, according to spokesperson for Abta - The Travel Association. Sean Tipton claimed that with people unsure about the future of their jobs, there will be a number of holidaymakers who hold on until they organize their trips abroad. Many of them will choose to holiday Croatia style, by taking advantage of the many historic sites and tourist attrac-

tions the country has to offer. Sun, sea, sand and culture are all provided by the nation's various travel hotspots such as Dubrovnik, Split and Sibenik. Mr Tipton said: "If you are worried about your job and those kind of issues, you're not going to rush out and book a holiday. You are going to wait till you feel secure and its inevitable there will be a late booking market because of that."

IVO SANADER: SIGNS OF RECOVERY ON THE HORIZON Exporters are the healthiest part of the Croatian economy, said Darinko Bago, president of the Croatian Exporters Association (HIZ), opening the 4th convention of Croatia’s exporters. Addressing the exporters, Prime Minister Ivo Sanader said that the crisis will not be conquered by “old, communist taxes” or currency depreciation, or those who advocate the same level of taxes for the rich and the poor, referring to the opposition. He boasted that the Government created a framework for development of entrepreneurship and concluded there are reasons to be optimistic. The PM says that certain signs of recovery can already be seen on the horizon. He once again stressed that the Government had saved the banking system by increasing the insured savings amount in banks to HRK 400,000, mentioned the national plan for maintaining the current level of employment worth HRK 520 million, and positive IMF’s evaluations.

DRESSING FOR CROATIA A Canadian newspaper that looked into what makes the ideal attire for travellers has revealed that khaki is no longer the staple backpack item for people on adventures across the world. Indeed, the Ottawa Citizen used the example of one trepid explorer, who visited Croatia with nothing but the clothes and bag on her back. For those taking a holiday to Croatia this year, the comments of public relations manager Kate Buska may come in handy. She said that sleeveless cotton shift dresses are a must, before adding: "I went to London and Croatia for two weeks with a few shift dresses and was able to wear them in all kinds of situations, from chic business cocktail parties in Kensington to romantic sunset strolls along the Adriatic coast." It is not just Ms Buska who enjoyed a Croatia travel experience lately American celebrity Bridget Marquardt, who hosts the show Bridget's Sexiest Beaches, told USA Today that her Dubrovnik holiday was "absolutely beautiful".

SHIP OVER 2,000 YEARS OLD FOUND IN NOVALJA In the Caska Bay on the Island of Pag, near Novalja, an ancient sewn ship over 2,000 years old was found. This is the result of research done by the city of Novalja and the Zadar University, in cooperation with the French institute for scientific research (CNRS-CCJ University in Marseille) and numerous other foreign associates.

Archaeologists have found an ancient sewn ship more than 2000 years old in Pag’s Caska Bay, reports ezadar.hr. The research, which was organized by the City of Novalja in cooperation with the Zadar University in cooperation with the French national institute for scientific research, was led by Professor Zdenko Brusic from the Zadar University.

WARNINGS ISSUED AS CROATIA EXPERIENCES EARLY HEAT-WAVE The heat-wave hitting Croatia for the past few days will continue for at least a few more, according to weather experts. Temperatures have risen into the high 30s throughout the country recently, according to weather forecasters, and could rise to as much as 33 degrees.

CROATIA ADDRESSING GREEN AGENDA With a number of campaign groups calling on people to choose a more environmentally-friendly vacation, Croatia could provide the answer. Next week, the country’s capital Zagreb hosts Greenergo - the first international ecological car show the nation has ever held. Running from May 25th to 26th, the event will showcase Croatia’s green credentials and promote the use of eco-friendly energy sources in transport. Demonstrations and speeches from prominent figures in the transport and environment industries will take place. It comes after Laura Burgess, director of environmentfocused travel website ecoscape, said that people need to embed sustainability into their holidays. She indicated that there are a number of processes travellers can follow to be more eco-friendly. “You can look at all sorts of things,” she explained. “For example if you want to reduce your emissions, you can look at the way you travel there, whether or not you fly or take the train.”

Visitors to Croatia should be prepared for quite exceptional summer weather, and doctors are warning that the old and the very young should take precautions for dealing with the heat. People in those age categories should avoid the midday sun and protect themselves with high-factor sun creams.

Tribunj The original scenery of an old Dalmatian town, the clean sea - according to records, probably the cleanest sea on the Adriatic, the rich sea flora and fauna make the sea of Tribunj suitable for swimming and underwater safari. In fact I was recently in Tribunj and was yet again amazed at its beauty, both natural and architectural, truly a gem of the Sibenik County. The sports and recreation opportunities of Tribunj include tennis, boccia (bowls), indoor football, yachting and diving schools. Tribunj has the largest fishing fleet in central Dalmatia; when fishermen return from the sea, the promenade of Tribunj turns into a shop window offering fresh fish and other catch,

contributing thus to a special atmosphere and character of this picturesque town. The tourist offer of high-quality fish, mussels and crabs have made Tribunj a famous resort; the local specialty is fish ragout with polenta. Traditional feasts, the Tribunj Night and Fishermen's Night, are organized in the season. The Assumption (15th of August) and St. Nicholas' Day (6th of December) are major religious events. Tribunj Marina was opened in 1997. The chief occupations include farming, fishing and tourism. The Rupa cove as well as in several other smaller inlets west of the town offer nice beaches, with the Sovlja beach being the most beautiful

among them. Tribunj is situated on the local branching road leading from the main road (M2, E65). Smaller yachts can anchor in the port; the anchoring ground for larger vessels is to the southeast of the town. The original settlement developed on the island in the 16th century. It was established by the refugees from the neighbouring settlements on the mainland. Fragments of the defence wall dating to the period of Venetian rule have been preserved and are still visible today. The old town “Jurjevgrad” contains the ruins of the mediaeval fortress and the church of St. Nicholas from 1452. In the following centuries the island was linked to the mainland by a stone bridge.

The new part of the town developed directly opposite on the mainland. The history of Tribunj is closely connected to the building of the small church of St. Nicholas, the protector of the village. There is a beautiful vantage point from which you can see the whole village. There is a pine forest, the beach Zamalin, and a little bit further there are two natural beaches, Sovlja and Bristak. Although it has been oriented towards tourists for a long time, it has still remains an old fishermen's village and evidence of this can be seen today. The docks are decorated in the early autumn with casks of domestic wines, and the life of Tribunj local fishermen moves

into the hinterland where they work in their vineyards and olive groves, producing the wines and olive oil for which Tribunj is well known. Another mediaeval church is to the east of the town. If you are looking for tranquil destination, than in Tribunj you will have a great and relaxing holiday. In its apartments, Tribunj offer 1,830 beds. In its marina, there are 260 mornings for boats, and in the restored old church, there is library and Internet centre. There is a post office, a bank office, a tourist agency, and parking is available in front of the bridge. In fact modern day Tribunj offers everything for the modern traveller but with a hint of times gone by.

“Kornati” National park "On the last day of Creation God desired to crown His work, and thus created the Kornati Islands out of tears, stars and breath" - wrote George Bernard Shaw. According to the legend, the Kornati Islands were formed from a handful of white stones that remained after God had created the world. He threw them into the sea and decided that no alterations were necessary. From the 14th century the island of Kornat had several names: Insula Sancte Marie , Stomorin Otok, Tarac, Toreta (Tureta). In the 17th century the archipelago got the name Coronati. The Kornati Islands were populated as early as the Neolithic. In recent times there are no permanent habitations; the last of them was mentioned in the 18th century under the name Toreta. The Kornati Islands had long been owned by Zadar. In the 16th century they were -under the Venetians, who subleased them to the families from Zadar. - The oldest archaeological finds on the island of Kornat are the remains of Illyrian settlements (Strazisce, Toreta) and stone grave-mounds. The remains from Roman times have been found on the hill Toreta; at the foot of the hill, on the southern side are the remains of an early Christian church with a semicircular apse. A smaller church, preserved until the present, was later constructed in it; the lower threshold of the church is a Roman votive inscription. On the very hill is a large quadrangular tower, built at the beginning of the Middle Ages. The remains of a mediaeval tower may also be seen on the islet of Panitula, and on the island of Jadra there is a church from the 16th century. The Kornati archipelago is really so fascinating and unique in its beauty and attractiveness that there is no other in Europe, and even the world, to compare it with. With so many reefs, capes, islands, islets, coves and bays, it

truly is a promised land for lovers of nautical beauties. The Kornati Islands are an untouched oasis for those who wish to enjoy bathing in the crystal clear sea, rest in the untouched nature, and enjoy the quiet hours, relaxing and restoring energy before returning to the world. Due to the unfavourable dynamics of rainfall and air temperatures during the vegetation period, and because of limestone formation, the vegetation on the islands is very sparse. The predominant type is rocky ground with sparse pastures. Only on the north-eastern side of the Kornat Island, near the Stativala Cove, there are some areas under holm oaks. Red soil fields, mild slopes and coves provide good opportunities for the cultivation of olives, figs, vines and citrus fruit. The Kornati area is one of the richest fishing grounds in the Adriatic, especially rich in benthos species. The Kornati archipelago encompasses 147 islands, islets and reefs making up the total surface area of 69 sq km. They spread from Dugi Otok (The Long Island) to Žirje covering the total surface area of 320 sq km. The National Park encompasses 89 islands and covers the area of 220 sq km. The Kornati archipelago was named after its largest island, the Kornati Island. The northern coast is more indented and softer than the southern, where there are mostly cliffs steeping down towards the sea. There are no water streams on the islands, and they are covered with scarce bushes and grass. The Kornati Islands have a number of small coves, "wild" harbours, where boaters may take shelter and dock. However, there is also a modern, well equipped marina - Piskera ACI Marina, located on the island of the same name, with 120 berths. On the island of Zut, outside the boundaries of Kornati National Park, is Zut ACI Marina, also with 120 berths.

•• How is the season going so far this year? Certainly we can’t complain about the number of guests we’ve had so far this season. We have had approximately the same number of guests so far this year as we had over the same period last year. It’s still very early to give exact figures on May, but the months leading up to May were around the same results as last year. In fact until the end of June we can’t really say to any great accuracy how the season has started. We need to collect a lot of information and statistics and then analyse them all. •• Have you seen any effects of the global crisis on guest’s arrivals? Again it’s a little early in the season to give any firm conclusions, however so far the effect has been minimal. •• Do most of your guests arrive as part of a group or individual? It’s quite hard to compare the number of groups and the number of individuals, especially if we are talking about the

exact number of guests. When individual yachts come to visit Kornati there might be 2 guests or 10 guests on one boat, this all varies on the type and size of yacht. On the other hand the guests that visit the national park as part of a larger group also vary according to the size of the cruise boat used. •• What do guests say when they see it for the first time? The Kornati National Park is truly something special and in many ways unique. All of the guests that I have spoken to are more than pleased with their tour. The nature is so amazing that you can’t see something like this everyday. Seeing the guest’s faces as they visit the park for the first time tells me everything, a picture is worth a thousand words. •• How many marinas are there in the Kornati National Park? There is only one marina inside the national park based at Piškera. This marina is part of the ACI group and has 120 berths. The berths are equipped with both water and electricity.

The Croatian Kornati archipelago (Ialian: Arcipelago delle Incoronate) is located in northern Dalmatia, south of Zadar, but in Šibenik-Knin county. With 150 islands in a sea area of about 320 km² Kornati is the densest archipelago in the Mediterranean Sea. The southern part of the archipelago, which roughly corresponds to the part of the archipelago called Donji Kurnat (Lower Kurnat) was declared a national park in 1980. Kornat, with its area of 32,525,315 m², the biggest of the islands, comprises two-thirds of the park’s land area. Although the island is 25.2 km long, it is no wider than about 2.5 km. There are no permanent settlements in Kornati. Simple houses in well-protected coves such as Vruje, Kravjačica, Lavsa and others are used by land owners as temporary shelters. Most of the land owners are from the island of Murter.

•• Kakva je zasad ovogodišnja sezona? Zasad se ne možemo žaliti na broj pristiglih gostiju. Ima ih otprilike jednako kao i prošle godine u ovo vrijeme/doba. Prerano je govoriti o točnim brojkama za svibanj, ali do kraja svibnja postići ćemo slične rezultate kao lani. Zapravo, do samog kraja lipnja ne možemo sa sigurnošću reći kako je sezona počela. Potrebno je prikupiti informacije i statistike te ih sve analizirati. •• Jeste li s dolaskom gostiju primijetili utjecaj svjetske krize? Ponavljam da je malo prerano donositi čvrste zaključke, ipak zasada je utjecaj minimalan. •• Dolazili li većina vaših gostiju grupno ili pojedinačno? Malo je teško usporediti broj grupa s brojem pojedinačnih gostiju, pogotovo ako govorimo o točnom broju gostiju. Kada jahte pojedinačno dođu u posjet Kornatima na njima može biti

dvoje ili deset gostiju, sve ovisi o veličini jahte. U drugu ruku, broj gostiju koji nam dolaze u posjet kao dio veće grupe također ovisi o veličini broda s kojim su stigli. •• Što gosti kažu kada prvi put ugledaju Kornate? (kada prvi put to vide) Nacionalni park Kornati je zaista nesto posebno i jedinstveno na mnogo načina. Svi gosti s kojima sam imao priliku razgovarati bili su više nego zadovoljni obilaskom. Priroda je zadivljujuća i nesvakidašnja. Sam pogled na lica gostiju koji sve to vide po prvi put sve govori, slika govori više o tisuću riječi. •• Koliko je marina u Nacionalnom parku Kornati? U Nacionalnom parku samo je jedna marina i smještena je u Piškeri. Ta je marina dio ACI – ja i ima 120 vezova. Svi vezovi imaju vodu i struju (opremljeni su s vodom i strujom). Na otoku postoje i druga sidrišta ali samo je ovo prava marina. •• Možete li mi reći nešto o

Yes, this action is accordance with “Days of nature protection” which is being organised on the 22nd of May. This day is the “Days of nature protection” day in the Republic of Croatia and the international day of “Biological Diversity.” This year’s theme for the International Day for Biological Diversity seeks to highlight the importance of sustainable agriculture not only to preserve biodiversity, but also to ensure that we will be able to feed the world, maintain agricultural livelihoods, and enhance human well being into the 21st century and beyond. On Saturday the 23rd of May we will organise divers to clean the sea bed in the national park. We will have between 25 and 30 divers that will get involved in this action. In total there will be two dives on Saturday and one dive on Sunday. The partners in this action are: staff from the Natio-

How long does a tour of the national park last? The standard tour normally starts at around 9 o’clock in the morning and lasts until about 6 o’clock in the afternoon, so it really is a full day tour. Of course as we are the supervisors of the national park so don’t organise tours, in fact we act more as overall protection and management of the national park. Of course we have our own boats with which we monitor the park but these are not for guests use.

To be honest we don’t expect much rubbish to be found, at least I hope that’s the case, but you never know. The divers will clean up around 10 locations and everything they find that doesn’t belong there will be taken away. Of course we don’t expect them to find any larger objects like car tyres but there will be the occasional bottle. •• How often do you go out to the Kornati islands? I quite regularly go out on the islands during the season and before in the pre-season. We have monitors out around the islands everyday both during the summer and the winter. The national park has 20 full time staff and in the season another 20 part time.

U Republici Hrvatskoj to je „Dan zaštite prirode“ a ujedno je i Međunarodni dan biološke raznolikosti. Ove godine tema Međunarodnog dana biološke raznolikosti je ukazivanje na važnost održivih poljoprivrednih kultura ne samo u svrhu zaštite biološke raznolikosti, nego također i osiguranja da ćemo biti u mogućnosti prehraniti svijet, osigurati dovoljno poljoprivrednih prinosa i poboljšati blagostanje ljudi u 21 stoljeću i dalje. U subotu 23. svibnja organizirati ćemo ronioce za čišćenje morskog dna u nacionalnom parku. U akciju će biti uključeno između 25 i 30 ronilaca. U konačnici biti će dva zarona u subotu i jedan u nedjelju. Sudionici u ovoj akciji su: osoblje iz Državnog ureda za očuvanje prirode, osoblje Nacionalnog parka

Koliko dugo traje obilazak Nacionalnog parka? Standardni obilazak počinje oko 9 sati ujutro i traje do 6 sati poslijepodne, tako da se zaista radi o cjelodnevnom obilasku. Kao upravitelji Nacionalnog parka mi ne organizirano obilaske, ustvari, naš zadatak je da park zaštitimo i da vodimo poslovanje. Naravno, mi imamo svoje brodove s kojima obilazimo/motrimo park i oni nisu gostima na raspolaganju.

Iskreno govoreći, ne očekujemo da će biti pronađeno puno otpada, u svakom slučaju to se nadam, ali nikad ne znate. Ronioci će čistiti deset lokacija i sve što pronađu, a tamo ne pripada, biti će odvezeno. Naravno da ne očekujemo da pronađu veće stvari poput guma od automobila, ali pokoju bocu bi mogli naći. •• Koliko često idete na Kornate? Za vrijeme sezone redovito idem na otoke, a također idem u pred i po sezoni. Oko otoka i ljeti i zimi imamo postavljene promatrače. Sibenik's singing society “Kolo” is one of the oldest singing societies in Croatia. It was established in 1899 as the Croatian musical society “Kolo”. The mixed choir “Kolo” has for the past 100 years been at the top of Croatian choir singing. “Kolo” is one the most awarded amateur choirs in Croatia. They have won awards on almost every festival in Croatia, and also at festivals abroad (North Wales, Germany, Poland). It's a musical society that is adorned with a great number of awards, and medals. “Kolo” was awarded with the eminent Sibenik award in 1968. They have released 3 records, 21 cassettes and a CD (1946, 1969, 1989 & 1998), and published 2 monographs: “Kolothe pride of Sibenik” 1976, and

History

Sibenik – a tale of the city Sibenik, the oldest autochthonous town in the Adriatic region, is located in its naturally most protected port, in the midst of its eastern coast, at the estuary of Krka River. It dwells at the very sources of rich Croatian history, on the spot where some of the first Croatians had seen the blue, beautifully intoxicating sea, which was to protect, nurture and feed them for centuries to come. Arriving Croats built a fortress (castrum) of Sibenik on the western side of a Karst agrarian areas called Gornje and Donje polje, on a stony rise 70m above the sea. The fortress was located on the south coast of a natural port and primarily served as administrative, religious and defence post of the county. Historical sources do not reveal the precise time of the fortress foundation but it is almost certain that it took place in IX century, at the latest. Parallel with the development of medieval Croatian state an urban settlement was being built beneath Sibenik fortress. Sibenik is first mentioned in deed of gift made

by King Petar Krešimir IV (10581074), who at the time lived and discussed state matters in Sibenik. Today, with the population of around 52000 (51553 in 2001), Sibenik is the principal town of the county, constituting its cultural, educational, administrative and economic centre. The relief is characterised by a very indented coastline and its melting with the extremely colourful outback of (Zagora region). Its hills, the mountains and the Plavno basin, its fertile fields (namely Kninsko, Kosovo and Petrovo), the Bukovica plane (to the north) with Promina Mountain and the rivers Krka and Čikola contribute to the diversity of the county landscape. The distance by air between its furthest coastal points to the east and west is 56.2 km. However, if we consider the lengths of islands' shores and add this to that of mainland shore, we are actually looking at the 805.9 km of county's coastal line which is truly remarkable. The county takes pride in its two National Parks - Krka and Kornati. Both of these national parks have their own characteristics but both are truly unique and magical. The population density is 51.7 inhabitants per km2. The city of Sibenik has a very significant geo-communicational position. Its backbone is the Adriatic tourist motorway with the extensions to Drniš (33 km) and Knin (55 km) and further to inland regions of the country. Another important link is the railway to Zagreb and Split. The closest airports are in Split (Kaštela, 45 km away) and Zemunik (50 km). Nowadays Sibenik is very well connected to the other parts of Croatia as well as Europe through the newly built A1 highway "Dalmatina." The

coastal part of the region hosts a Mediterranean type of climate which also significantly influences the inland of the region. The hours of sunshine are very high in the coastal area (2710 hours of sun per year), but it decreases as one goes further inland. Summer temperatures are relatively high, but a very pleasant wind called "maestral"(blowing from the sea towards the mainland) makes the heat easier to sustain. Winters are moderate and mild in the maritime parts. The precipitation is at its highest in wintertime, while the summers are mostly dry. Apart from the refreshing "maestral", the winds "bura" and "jugo" prevail in the greatest part of the region.

The importance of water and human health

H20, two parts hydrogen, one part oxygen. But this element, better known as water, is the most essential, next to air, to our survival. Water truly is everywhere; still most take it for granted. Water makes up more than two thirds of the weight of the human body, and without it, humans would die in a few days. The human brain is made up of 95% water, blood is 82% and lungs 90%. A mere 2% drop in our body's water supply can trigger signs of dehydration: fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on smaller print, such as a computer screen. Mild dehydration is also one of the most common causes of daytime fatigue. An estimated seventy-five percent of Americans have mild, chronic dehydration. Pretty scary statistic for a developed country, where water is readily available through the tap or bottle. These past few days in Sibenik have truly been a heat wave. With soaring temperatures and blazing sunshine it’s important to keep your body hydrated. Whilst enjoying the beauty of the Old City of Sibenik or lying on one of the many beaches in But how much is really enough? The experts have always said, on average, that eight eight-ounce glasses per day will suffice. However, that might not be enough. While eight is great, amounts really need to be tailored to meet the needs of every individual. Most adults will lose between two to three quarts of water per day by way of normal body functions, but athletes and those who live in work in warmer environments tend to lose more. For those people, drinking more water will make up for the bigger loss of water they had through perspiration, as well as in the regulation of body temperature. Our bodies are made up of 55-70% water, but it does not replenish itself, so drinking water helps maintain that healthy balance. But even still, many will walk around dehydrated, most of the time unknowingly. That is because thirst is a poor indicator of dehydration. By the time someone gets thirsty, it is too

late! Or, if one is thirsty, they may go for a beverage that does not actually replenish the body. A cold soda may feel nice going down, but beverages with caffeine are not meant to hydrate. Water is the best remedy for dehydration. If mild dehydration sets in, it can decrease one's energy level and mental functioning and increase stress on the body. Severe dehydration can have far more damaging effects. There are three important rules when it comes to drinking water. Drink twice as much as it takes to quench your thirst. Drink frequently throughout the day to prevent dehydration. Drink at least eight glasses daily, or one cup for every 20 pounds of body weight. For example, a 150-pound person who does not exercise or work in hot climates needs 7.5 cups. While some fruit juices and green tea may account for some fluid intake, you can count out beverages such as coffee or alcohol.

VODICE An islet in the midst of Visovačko lake, formed by the Krka river, homes a Franciscan monastery, a valuable monument of culture and history. It was first mentioned in 1400 as Lapis Alba (White Rock). It was finished in 1445, the church next to it in 1576. Numerous valuable historical objects, paintings and documents are kept here.

ZLARIN Vodice is a town in the Šibenik-Knin county, Croatia. It borders the Adriatic Sea and has a population of 9,407. Vodice is a popular tourist destination in Croatia, with most of the population oriented towards providing accommodation for visitors in the city's hotels, motels, and pensions. Vodice was first mentioned in 1402 although it was founded already

in the Roman times as Arausa. Its name derives from the word meaning water sources which supplied the whole area. The defense walls from the times of the Turks with the Coric tower testify the past times. Other similar monuments are St. Cross' church on the former graveyard, built in 1421 and the parish church in the town centre built in 1746.

Zlarin is a small island of the Dalmatian coast of Croatia near the city of Šibenik. Administratively, it is part of the ŠibenikKnin County. In winter times the island has a population of 276 people, but from March to October its population grows substantially up to 1,500 people. Zlarin has a large expatriate community. Zlarin's highest point is Klepac at 174 metres above

sea level. During bright and sunny days from this point you can see Mount Velebit and volcanic Jakuba island in the Adriatic sea. Zlarin has a myriad of fig and cypress trees, and other natural plants. Inner parts of the island are uninhabited and covered with thick forest. Zlarin is one of few islands on the Adriatic Sea that do not allow access to cars.

Heat the oil in a deep stockpot with a lid. Make pockets with a sharp knife all over the beef round and insert the smoked bacon pieces into the pockets. Season with salt and pepper. Then fry the round quickly in oil to brown all sides. Remove and transfer to another dish. Brown the chopped vegetables in the same oil. When the vegetables have become lightly browned, add the rosemary, bay leaf and peppercorns. Stir and then place the meat on top. Cover the dish and stew on medium heat for about 2 1/2 hours, adding water when necessary. When the meat is tender and done, remove it and once again transfer to another dish. Add the flour to the vegetable mix, stirring thoroughly. Add the wine and stock and simmer uncovered, stirring frequently until the sauce thickens. When it has thickened to a gravy-like consistency, strain it. If so desired, you may purée the vegetables and add them back to the sauce (add liquid if the sauce becomes too thick). Slice the meat, arrange on a platter, and either pour the sauce over top or serve separately.
