The Reformation & the Rise National States 1) Overall how did the Reformation provide for “increasing control of kings of their
kingdoms”? a. In England and in Denmark the reformation came because limitation of the power of the Church was necessary to the further development of efficient government. Efficient government demanded restraint among papal intervention, upon ecclesiastical privilege and exemptions, upon the legal right of an authority outside the country to levy taxes. 2) How did monarchs gain power over church? a. In 1478 the Pope granted to the Spanish sovereigns the right to set up and
direct the Inquisition: a system of courts which effectively controlled the churchmen of the land and was under the immediate authority, not of the Pope or bishops, but of the king. Also the Concordant of Bologna which secured the king the right of appointment to all higher posts in the Church of France. 3) Why was the “prince” seen as more effective by reformers? a. Church reformers looked to the government for effective power to reform.
For example, if you wished to reform a monastery, you would get nowhere if you went to the bishop of Pope, but if you asked the kings, he might order the monks be have or be gone.
