NEWARK TOWER
PAGE
Newark Towpr Chronology for 9/11/01 What did we know in advance? We did not know anything in advance.
When did we know something? First observation by the Newark Tower controllers - observed smoke emitting from North tower of the World Trade Center, (Our controllers thought there was a fire in the building bat did not make the connection of an aircraft flying into the building.)
What did we do and whom did we notify?
"N
Rick Tepper (ATCS) immediately contacted the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey ud informed them of our observations of the possible fire. Newark Tower then contacted N-90 and Informed them of the fire at the WTC. N-90 TRACON responded that there was a hijacked aircraft that they had lost RADAR contact with in that vicinity. A discussion then ensued between the EWR controllers that the building being struck by an aircraft might have caused the fire at the WTC. As this conversation was proceeding the CBA controller checked to see if he was missing any sircraft in the Class B airspace. The Newark controllers also contacted LGA, TEB and JFK. and asked them If they were missing any aircraft At this point the New York Center called and asked if we observed anything over Manhattan. Newark Tower advised them that we observed the WTC on (ire. The center advised that they had a. hijacked aircraft disappear from Radar over Manhattan. Approximately 10 minutes later the center advised the tower that they had another aircraft headed for Manhattan and did we see anything out die window. We observed the target on the EWRRadar approximately 2 or 3 miles South of the Verazzano Bridge, Northbound, descending rapidly. At that same time the tower controllers got a visual on the unknown target at a low altitude flying toward the city of New York. The controllers then observed the aircraft fly directly into the South Tower of the WTC. The Operational Supervisor advised the Port Authority to close the access road to the control tower. The N-90 TRACON stopped the south departures (Lanna, Biggy, White). N-90 stopped all departures. Approximately 10 minutes later PANYNJ closed the Newark Airport Prepared By:
