COLLIN COUNTY COMMUNITY COLLEGE DISTRICT DIVISION OF HEALTH SCIENCES AND EMERGENCY SERVICES HEALTH INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY COURSE SYLLABUS Summer 2009 COURSE NUMBER: MRMT 1267 COURSE TITLE: PRACTICUMÑMEDICAL TRANSCRIPTION (CAPSTONE) COURSE DESCRIPTION: Practical work experience in medical transcription, plus adjunct tasks designed to aid the student in establishing clear career objectives and transitioning to the desired MT work environment. Work experience may be simulated or real. CREDIT HOURS: 2 LECTURE HOURS: 0 LAB HOURS: 14 PREREQUISITES: Enrollment requires approval of the instructor and completion of, or concurrent enrollment in all other courses required to achieve the CCCCD Medical Transcription Specialization Certificate. Walls, CMT, BA, MA Associate Professor, Health Information Technology Office hours by appointment 972-396-9061 voice mail Preferred method of contact: Blackboard CE email [email protected] (non course-related issues) CLASS INFORMATION: The course has 2 distinct elements: (1) practical MT work experience and (2) practical exercises to prepare for establishing oneself in the profession. The MT work experience is normally performed in a simulated office environment based in Blackboard CE. However, a student may contract with a physicianÕs office, healthcare facility, or MT Service Organization (MTSO) for practical experience during the Practicum. In either case, the student transcribes 10 hours (600 minutes) of physician dictation. In the case of an outside MTSO, the studentÕs client must provide

a written (emailed) report of the studentÕs completion of this requirement. Simultaneous with their work experience, all students will also complete through Blackboard CE other related assignments relevant to such things as resume and cover letter, job searches, and evaluation of the various settings in which transcription is typically performed.
