GRAMMAR In this lesson we'll introduce parting greetings. A parting expression that we can use any time of the day to strangers or friends is Güle güle, which literally means "Leave while smiling." I know it sounds funny, but partings generally contain a bit of sadness, so this expression tries to make up for that. You can think of it as a Turkish version of "bye bye." You can also say Görüşürüz, which means "See you later." This is a form of the Turkish word that means "to see." It's used with people we know and will possibly see again. Another parting phrase is Bay bay, which is "bye bye" from English. It is used the same way in Turkish as in English. Put it with görüşürüz and you get "Bye bye, see you soon." Bay bay, görüşürüz. A more formal way to bid farewell is Görüşmek üzere. This literally means "Until I see you." The first word, görüşmek, is the verb for "to see." The next word, üzere, means "until then." All together, that's Görüşmek üzere. Use it with people you don't know or don't have a close relationship with.

CULTURAL INSIGHT Quick Tip 1

It is a good idea to use the polite form of the word "Goodbye" if you are talking to older people. The most polite form shows more respect: Görüşmek üzere or Tekrar görüşmek üzere.
