At mid term and the end of the semester a % must be assigned in Grades 10, 11 and 12. The % and letter grade is to be for achievement related to the learning outcomes only, and should not include work habits or behaviour. Before a failing grade is given, the student must be given an “I”, with a plan detailing how he might improve the grade to a pass. That plan must be shared with the parent.

Each quarter is a separate assessment. Only the Final Grade is a cumulative assessment.

Students must be given work habits, attendance and comments for all terms. Work habits are recorded as “”E”, “G”, “S”, “NI” or “U”. Behaviour and work habits are not to be included in the letter grade.

Staff meetings will be held every Monday morning at 8:10 and alternating first Wednesday or Thursday of each month. Attendance at all meetings is mandatory under the School Act, unless prior arrangement has been made with the administration.

Mount Sentinel High School Teacher Absence
All TOC’s are organized through central call out. Teacher may not call their own replacement. If a teacher is going to be absent from their duties they must: Planned Absence (attend a meeting, go to an appointment, Pro-D, etc) 4

Fill out the Short Term Leave of Absence Request. Please make sure you check off the appropriate code. If you are not sure which one is correct, talk to Blair or Glen. Under comments, include your list of preferred TOC’s, as well as pertinent details, eg what workshop you are attending, or who’s wedding it is. Bring the form to Blair or Glen to sign. Give the form to Sue to fax to the Board Office. Please fill this form out as early as possible. This will ensure you have the best choice of your preferred TOC. The District would like them at least 5 days in advance.
Please check your contract for leaves that are discretionary, bereavement, community service, etc. A flow chart describing various types of leave and what needs to be done will be posted in the staff room. Note: The Leave of Absence Request MUST be filled out for any planned absence. Unplanned Absence (wake up and feel sick, or can not attend) Call (TOC Dispatcher) at 505-7065, and leave a message with your name, school and your teaching assignment. If you have a preferred TOC, leave that name. Or, you may email at
[email protected] with the same information. 2) Email Blair or Glen to let them know you are away, or call the school after 8 am. 1)
If you are unhappy with the choice of TOC’s, please DO NOT contact TOC dispatch directly. Pass on any concerns to Blair or Glen. Please make sure your TOC binder is updated, and detailed lesson plans, attendance sheets, etc are there for the TOC.

Emergency Response Plan
In the event that a danger of some kind is present outside the school and/or the danger has entered the school, a LOCKDOWN procedure will occur. The purpose of a LOCKDOWN is to MINIMIZE RISK by minimizing traffic and ensuring the safety of as many people as possible while isolating the risk.

3) Staff to get message to office by wall phone (1010) or send a runner if possible. 4) The R.C.M.P. and/or other emergency personnel will be contacted by the office. 5) Office will broadcast the phrase, “This is a Lockdown” All students are to report to the nearest classroom immediately Teachers need to direct any students in the hallway into their classroom (approx. 60 secs.) After this time, teachers are to lock doors and close blinds. Students need to be directed to stay away from doors and windows, get low behind furniture and remain quiet at all times. Take possession of, or ensure all cell phones are off. Staff needs to make a list of all people in the room. Important to disregard the fire alarm system and school bells unless informed otherwise. No one is to leave for ANY circumstance until the “All Clear and the Situation is Safe” announcement is made or escorted out room by room by the RCMP. Teachers should identify the most secure area within their teaching area.
Special circumstances: • • • • • •
Staff and students who are not able to get into a secure classroom are expected to stay hidden away as best as possible. An example is remaining in the washroom. Students in the multi-purpose room are to enter the Home Economics room, Gym or Office area. The administration will attempt to secure all outside doors if possible. Office will be secured as well. PE classes in the Gym are to be directed to a secure area (change rooms). Teachers on prep block need to get to a secure area. Any students outside are NOT to re-enter the building. Those students on the back field should cross over to the 12 Tribes Farm. Those in the front of the building are to head to Bill’ Heavy Duty/Playmor Power Products.

Fire Regulations/Evacuation Procedure TEACHERS, upon hearing a fire alarm: 6) Ensure all classroom activities stop, (gas and equipment where applicable) are shut off. 7) Ascertain if safe to exit classroom via designated evacuation route. 8) If able to exit classroom as planned, direct students to walk in an orderly manner along evacuation route to designated assembly area. 9) When exiting, attempt to close classroom windows, if possible. 10) Allow students to take clothing immediately accessible to them when evacuating. 11) Ensure class list, which includes that day’s attendance, is taken out and attendance is immediately taken at the assembly area. 12) A student runner should immediately report to secretary. 13) Immediately report any missing students, staff and/or visitors to the secretary. 14) If unable to exit classroom via door, open exterior window and evacuate. Call for help if unable to evacuate through open window. 15) If unable to exit classroom, have students sit on floor against outside wall. 16) The class shall remain in formation until instructed to return to the school by the administrator with an announcement of “All clear, it is safe to return to the building.” A. BETWEEN PERIODS AND DURING LUNCH HOUR: 17) Line up according to the class PRECEDING the break. 18) Librarian takes students out of the building from the library (and computer lab if no teacher is present). Students on assignment in the library/computer room. B. EVACUATION PROCEDURE: If a situation arises where a teacher becomes aware of an internal threat such as a bomb, gas leak, etc. 11 12
Staff to pull nearest FIRE ALARM and all staff are to follow Fire Drill Procedures as outlined in the teacher handbook. Once assembled in front of the tennis court area parking lot, staff and students may be directed to the marshalling point of Brent Kennedy School.

Mount Sentinel High School Earthquake Procedure
When an actual earthquake or after-shock occurs, immediately: 6. Issue “DUCK AND COVER” command. 7. Immediately face away from windows and take cover under or beside desks, counters or tables. 8. Assume “Crash” position on knees, head down, one hand clasped over neck (or neck/head covered with book or jacket) and one hand holding on to the furniture. Posture must be such that the most vulnerable areas (the neck and chest) are protected. Teachers must immediately take steps to protect themselves and prevent personal injury during an earthquake. Teachers have an extremely important role to play in assisting students through the post earthquake recovery stage. 9. Count aloud for the duration of the earthquake. After the shaking stops start counting again and count aloud to 60. 10. If the teacher is injured, two student monitors should have designated authority to give instructions. 11. Sixty seconds after the shaking has stopped, students should be instructed to check carefully for injuries and dangerous objects such as broken glass before moving and standing up. Students should be instructed to be silent during this time. 12. Apply life saving first aid interventions only. Do not delay the evacuation of uninjured students. 13. Instruct students to evacuate. Students should be in single file with shoes on. Do not wait for instruction from the office. 14. Follow predetermined exit routes. If an exit route is blocked teachers should calmly but firmly lead students to an alternate exit. 15. Avoid overhead wires, which may have broken during the earthquake. Lead students directly away from the building and into an open space. 16. Survivors and walking wounded should be evacuated first. The seriously injured must be left for the schools designated search and rescue team. 17. If a secondary earthquake or “aftershock” occurs students/staff should “Squat and Cover” (Place head close to knees, clasp hands behind neck, cover side of head with arms (if cover is available use it or place back against an interior wall). The “DUCK AND COVER” procedure is not advised as the ground may be littered with debris from the initial shock. Repeat the above post earthquake instructions and continue evacuation procedures. 18. Lead class to a safe assembly area (parking lot recommended). 19. Account for all students and record information on student release form. Report evacuation information to the site manager. The site manager needs to know if as soon as possible if injured or trapped students/staff have been left in the building. 20. Give additional First Aid as required. 21. Students must wait to be reunited with parents or guardians through the Student Release Station. If there are any students remaining after school hours, they must be accommodated at the school or at a posted Evacuation Reception Center (Brent Kennedy recommended).
