K S C – 80 ANNIVERSARY COMMEMORATION TH

On February 10th, 1929 the first Council of the Knight’s of St. Columba in East Anglia was granted its charter in Ipswich and numbered 206 . Among its first members were Fred Bantick of this parish and relations of Canon Hazell . Its early history was that it was involved in setting up St Joseph’s college and arranging for the De La Salle Brothers to staff it. Much help was given in the war and in the hard times afterwards to those in need . The 1960s saw help being given to Children from N.I with holidays; the 70s provided the sound system for Walsingham and the start of our collecting used spectacles and stamps, still ongoing, along with providing posters for Christmas and Holy week .The 1980s saw the start of the Deanery Quiz , still running ,together with days of recollection open for all the Deanery . There are many things the KSC do locally and nationally, too many to mention . Much help is given to us by the CWL particularly, here in Felixstowe, and support from them and the Clergy. Spiritually we arrange Masses during the year and we visit our sick Brothers, their widows and families, especially at Christmas . TO START OUR CELEBRATION we will have a concelebrated Mass 7.30pm on Feb 10th together with a social gathering in the hall afterwards with light refreshments. There will also be an exhibition of KSC memorabilia. All are welcome. We would like numbers for catering so please inform KSC members if you would like to come along.

PARISH ADVISORY COUNCIL

Since the formation of the PAC at the Parish AGM last September we have met with Fr. David each month. As an advisory body we are not shackled by rigid rules and constraints and we do not vote on items (votes can cause resentment) but deal with them on a consensus basis. We promote transparency, openness and the ideal of being an ‘inclusive’ parish. Minutes of our meetings are displayed in the church porches and are available on the parish website. Unfortunately the parish churches, the hall and the presbytery have suffered from a lack of maintenance in the past and much of our time has been spent discussing the necessary action to bring our buildings up to standard. Some items have been completed but others will take a little longer to complete. In the near future the troublesome tree near to the hall will be removed and the hall floor will be resurfaced w/c 16th March. Subsidence near to the presbytery is being investigated. The finances of the parish permitted a £5,000 donation to be made in support of the Narthex building at the Cathedral. The work is due to commence in February. Among other on-going items are:- a parish mission statement, the celebration of the centenary of St Felix church, restructuring the church entrance, a parish review of the Diocesan Pastoral Plan for Bishop Michael (28 pages) and the probability of twinning our parish with one in Cambodia. Our next meeting is on Thursday 5th February at 7.30pm in St Felix hall when members of St. Marys’ parish Cambodia group will give a presentation. You are most welcome to attend. We need more parishioners to volunteer to help in the numerous tasks within the parish. If you feel you can help, don’t be shy! Nigel Gorham
