What’s the Point ?
THE POINT area has seen major changes in recent years, with excellent developments such as uShaka Marine World and "The Sails on Timeball". It is one of Durban's most historic and significant urban quarters, with its great location near the beach, and forms the southern point of the so-called 'Golden Triangle', with the other two being the Suncoast Casino and the new, improved ICC. However, anyone who actually lives in this triangle will know that it is far from golden. Crime is rife and seemingly unstoppable in the Point, many buildings are 'dead', there is overcrowding, noise pollution and endless taxis, which seem to operate above the law. There are so many liquor outlets it is hard to swing a cat without hitting one, and this contributes largely to the drunken revelry, noise, crime and unexplainable culture of smashing glass bottles in the streets and on pavements. The Point is also home to many shelters (to coin a phrase). For many years, 'The Ark' provided basic food and shelter to the many homeless people, until it was forced to close down due to the development of the Point. This was good news for the other shelters, asc they suddenly had a greater 'market share' of homeless people. It sounds terrible, but, the truth be told, shelter owner/operators are not a bunch of caring,
compassionate, do-gooders who feel the need to help their fellow mankind. They are businessmen. The average price of a shelter is R18-00 a day. For this, you get a metal bed with sagging springs, a dirty foam mattress, some food and a shower. But, you are locked out at 8.30am every morning and only allowed back at 4.30pm, which is why the beachfront is full of car guards and beggars who are trying to make their R18-00 before evening. If you are unable to "work", it is necessary to pay another R10-00 for the privilege of staying in the shelter. Now, it follows, that pretty soon the frail and the sick are booted out the shelter as they are unable to "work" to pay the "rent". Apparently, the City of Durban does not care as much about the homeless people as they do for the street kids, whom inexplicably run AWAY from places of safety to go back on the streets. The lady (who we shall call Mrs. 'S') in the photo on the right, was found lying on a wet grass patch in South Beach, with no warm clothes or blankets, and was unable to move. Mrs. 'S' suffers from epilepsy, and is also suspected of having TB, which renders her unable to "work" and pay for shelter. She has now been admitted (albeit reluctantly) to Addington Hospital after concerned residents rallied to help her. Her future is now in the hands of local government. God help her!
They taste so good cos they grow so good!
WHAT SHOULD YOU BE LOOKING FOR IN AN ESTATE AGENT WHEN BUYING OR SELLING ONE OF THE MOST VALUABLE ASSETS YOU MAY EVER OWN ?
IF YOU’VE been living on frozen vegetables or fruit that goes off within a day of purchasing it at the local supermarkets, treat yourself to ‘healthy, just picked, never seen a freezer’ produce that’s available at the Durban Farmers Market. Situated in the old Durban Drive In at the end of Brickhill Road, it’s open every Saturday morning from about 6.30 till they’re sold out! Get there early so you can have the pick of the crop - there’s a large variety of produce available - freshly baked cakes, tarts, pancakes, breads, muffins and pies, samoosas and chilli bites, free range chickens and eggs, freshly cut flowers, pure fruit juices, honey from the hives and so much more. The farmers come from as far as Nottingham Road, Mooi River, Pietermaritzburg, Cliffdale and are there before it gets light preparing their stalls for the hungry public. The Ricksha Bus used to run every second Saturday but doesn’t any longer. However, we at Snail Mail are trying to get the Municipality to run a Mynah to the Farmers Market every Saturday morning picking up people along the way. I believe the powers that be may consider it if there was a lot of interest so PLEASE either phone, write or email so that we have some ammunition to show that it wouldn’t be a waste of time or money and would be a good community builder as many seniors living in the various TAFTA residences used to be regular visitors every Saturday but now have no means of getting there. Phone Leon on 202 4287 or 083 352 1133. Lucky FREE draw for Food Hamper at 7.15am every Saturday
Remember this - for you it is possibly the ONLY transaction like this you’ll ever make, but for the Estate Agent it is ONE of MANY. INTEGRITY and the desire to see your needs met BEFORE working out the commission cheque makes the difference and we believe that we at
