Put relationships at the top of your list!

By Yvonne Duke, Executive Director BNI (Business Network Int’l) WE LIVE in an age of frighteningly progressive technology, where we frequently communicate with people, and sometimes the same people several times in one day, without leaving our homes or offices or even opening our mouths. Life has forced us (or made it easier for us) to do business with people without having met them or even spoken to them. What has happened to the relationships that we valued so highly in the past? An explosion of new businesses has created an enormous choice of firms to whom one can give business – yet we are also seeing a huge increase of referral organizations flourishing in recent years. Are people finding a needing to rediscover relationships? Firstly, what are referral organizations? They are groups that meet regularly for the express purpose of sharing business referrals with one another. The members do not meet to conduct other business such as fundraising – they are strictly there to share referrals and network with each other to increase their volume of business. Belonging to a networking organization is not for anyone who is looking for a get-rich-quick scheme. They are based on the concept that we need to get back to the time when we valued and respected relationships – so referral groups are about cultivating relationships with other business people so that, in time, others refer you to people they know, who refer you to people they know and so on. Whether you belong to an organized referrals group or whether you strive to network wherever you can, remember that if you give good referrals to others, they will inevitably give good referrals to you in the form of new business. So how can you be sure that you give and receive good referrals? Well firstly, make it your aim to develop a “givers gain” mentality. When we meet people in business, we tend to wonder how they can be of value to us. As good networkers, we need to change our focus to how we can be of value to others. Learn as much as you can about your business contacts and their businesses so that you can find ways to help them develop their businesses. By helping to create an environment of helping others instead of considering how they can help us, we also create a reciprocal synergy where everyone benefits. The secret of giving and receiving referrals is that there is no secret – just keep in mind the old adage: “What goes around, comes around.”

ALIWAL SHOAL SCUBA DIVING DAY TRIP

I didn’t believe it when my Mother told me I’d stay like this if the wind changed!!

Terena Dlamini formerly of South Beach

SCUBA DIVING ALLOWS you to discover the other two thirds of the planet. It is a great way to relax, chill out (sometimes literally) and explore the depths. CONSAT specialises in day trips to dive at Aliwal Shoal, situated on the KZN South Coast, between Umkomaas and Scottburgh. We will pick you up from your place of residence in an air-conditioned Condor, (Greater Durban area only) and transfer you to the dive shop. Your dive guide will give a briefing of the local dive procedures and sea conditions en route, and once there, your diving equipment will be checked and assembled for you and loaded on the boat. Then you will be transported down to the launch site and given a dive briefing by the Dive master, and allocated a dive buddy. All safety procedures will be explained in detail before you launch in one of the RIBs (Rigid Inflatable Boats) which are all D.O.T (Dept. Of T r a n s p o r t ) registered. Only e x p e r i e n c e d skippers, trained in Emergency First Aid, are used, with the

What is a motivational speaker OR SHOULD that be WHO is a Motivational Speaker? Think for a moment, will you, about a world without motivation. What on earth would get you up in the morning? Without interest, excitement, desire, intention and other motivators your lives would be lacklustre, flat, boring and totally without purpose. Is it hard to motivate yourself to do what needs to be done, day after day? Some things seem a breeze. The things you enjoy do not feel like work. But what about the rest of the stuff you plough through every day? Do you really feel like cooking the family meal? Is it not easier to give everyone a bowl of cereal for supper? Have you thought about the motivation you get from the recipies in your favourite magazine? Or the one you browsed through at the hairdressers? Doing a quick mental scan of your grocery cupboard and by making a few minor adjustments to the ingredient list you are motivated to put something different and special on the table. Do you really feel like going out and spending money on a present for your child to take to yet another birthday party?

Spotting some really pretty wrapping paper becomes a motivator for getting that job done. The dolphin pattern on the paper suggests a beach towel, or a bucket and spade, or a bath-time gift. Is your relationship a little tired? A friend’s new hairstyle could be the motivator for you to get a mini-makeover. A candle on the table with a humble fish and chip supper could re-kindle romantic feelings. Life is full of motivators. They are all around you. Tessa Murray, an experienced Motivational Speaker, will get you back on track. Tessa designs her training sessions to meet your exact needs. She works with individuals, groups and large corporates. She especially enjoys training young women as she believes they deserve all the help they can get in this busy world. Tessa is also available simply as a speaker at your work function, church, sport’s club or gala event. She has a host of topics at the ready or she will tailor her speech to suit your occasion. Please feel free to telephone Tessa Murray on 031- 3032189 or email her on [email protected]

emphasis is on “Safety First”. Aliwal Shoal is rated in some dive magazines as a top ten dive site. In winter, it is a breeding ground for raggedtooth sharks, which congregate at spots with apt names such as Raggie’s Cave. The Shoal lies about 5 kms offshore and just under 3kms long and approx. 800 metres wide, with depths ranging from 4 m at Pinnacles, to 30 m at the edges. For most dives, the average depth is around 15 to 22 metres, depending on the site. Most divers should be able to enjoy at least 40 minutes of diving, with 55 mins being the norm. Once the dive has ended, you will do a deep-water exit onto the waiting boat and proceed back to the shore. Your dive gear will be offloaded for you while you are driven back to the dive shop, where you can enjoy a hot shower and a cup of coffee while they wash your dive gear for you. The trip is available on any day, with one day warning required. The Aliwal Day Trip costs R850-00 It includes: • Return transfer from Durban to Umkomaas / Scottburgh • All diving gear • Boat launch • ·One dive • Light lunch (Two dives cost R1050-00) For those of you that have not yet enjoyed the life experience that SCUBA diving offers, you can do a PADI Dive Course with DIVE DIMENSION, situated in Glenashley, Durban.
