COPS ON DRUGS? Can brass bands defeat brass balls? by Conrad Smit Boldly sitting on the front page of ‘The Daily News’, (August 8th), was the headline:

“Top brass to tackle crime”. Sounds good, doesn’t it? But, if you read further, you will be informed that this is not a bold plan by the “top brass” of the SAPS to be proactive and defeat crime, but a brass band competition to be held in KZN later this month. Here is the daring plan – bound to scare criminals into giving up their sinful ways: “The campaign is aimed at creating crime awareness and reaching out to as many people as possible through MUSIC. Activities including a national police choral competition have been lined up for the duration of the campaign. The officials will be accompanied by brass bands from other provinces.” My first reaction was: “What are they thinking?” But then I realised that they really do not have much choice. They are no good at catching criminals, preventing cash-in-transit heists, protecting the general public or resisting corruption, and, judging by the build of some of the cops in the POINT area, they could not chase a suspect if necessary. Yes, we hear all the excuses everyday. Understaffed, under funded, low pay, low morale, this, that and the next thing. Nobody is prepared to accept responsibility for the gross mismanagement of the SAPS. We are told to “leave the country” if we complain. Great. Thanks. Can I have my taxes refunded for the last 12 years please? If ever there was a need for privatisation of a government service (and I use that word lightly), it has to be the SAPS. Bring in BIG business. Get them to totally disband the existing members of SAPS and ask them all to re-apply for their jobs. If you get rid of all the illiterate, corrupt, unfit and unmotivated cops, you can use the remaining core personnel to build a NEW security force, that takes pride in what it

ARRIVING at the Farmers’ Market at around 6.30 on a Saturday morning, you could be forgiven for thinking that you’re in the Midlands. The smells and sounds as the farmers set up their stalls makes it hard to believe that you are in the middle of the city. The fact that packaged, processed and fast foods significantly diminish nutrition in food, makes shopping straight from the farm the ideal alternative. There are numerous vendors who sell healthy and fresh produce – some vegetables are so fresh they still have the soil on them! You can take your basket and stroll from stall to stall in quiet and safe garden surroundings. Available are non-refrigerated fresh veggies, free range chickens & eggs, a variety of nuts and seeds, freshly cooked samoosas, trout, cheeses, French paté, olive oil, dried fruit, mushrooms, herbs, homemade pies, pure fruit juices, health bread, honey from the hive, roses and other flowers. Don’t miss visiting and stocking up. Durban Farmers’ Market is situated in the old Durban Drive in grounds along Brickhill Road. Please phone Leon on 031-202 4287 or 083 352 1133 for any further info such as booking a stall.
