Thoughts: My dad had a unique whistle call that he used to keep track of where I was when we were hunting. I have never heard anyone else use that same whistle; it was unique only to him. A couple of days ago I was quail hunting with my son and another fellow when we got separated. My son mentioned that he has a pair of radios that would have helped us find one another. My dad would have just whistled. (Byron S.). Action Point: How many of us have really ever heard God’s voice? He says he calls each of us, but really how many can say they heard an audible call? Few; if any I would suspect. If you will spend time in the scriptures on a regular basis, I guarantee that you will hear his call. He truly has a unique plan for each of us to fulfill and he has given us the free will to choose. The choices we make are important as to whether we will answer and fulfill His call. The only way you will truly find out what He is saying will be by spending time daily in your Bible and prayer. I know this is true; it took me over 50 years to truly hear His voice. You have choices to make. I challenge you to hear His call, if you are not listening now. It truly is an adventure that will live with you for the rest of your life.

THIS IS A HAMMER By Samantha Mazzotta Chimney Cleaning Not for DIYers Q: Can I clean my own chimney to save money? -- Paul in Pittsburgh A: I wouldn’t recommend it for do-it-yourselfers. Chimney cleaning is one of those maintenance items that is best done by professionals. You can certainly take some preventive measures to make the job less expensive, but to keep your home safe, enlist the help of a licensed chimney cleaner. Preventive measures include burning higher-quality wood. Hardwoods -- like oak, for example -- produce less creosote, a sticky, highly flammable substance that coats the inside of the chimney and is often the culprit in chimney fires. Cheaper wood, especially pine, produces more creosote and should be used sparingly. Maintain the health of your chimney by cleaning the firebox regularly. Once the ashes of a fire have thoroughly cooled (you should be able to put your hand right on them without feeling any heat), sweep them out and dispose of them or add them to your compost pile. You can clean the

damper occasionally using a bristle brush or broom to sweep ashes and debris down into the firebox, but don’t reach up into the chimney flue. If you maintain the roof and gutters yourself, visually inspect the outside of your chimney during the maintenance task. Note any damage to the bricks, mortar or metal flashing around the chimney. Anything beyond that, a

professional chimney sweep should come in. Once a year, prior to the onset of cold weather, schedule a chimney cleaning service. The professional should inspect the inside of the chimney, the chimney stack, the fireplace, flue and all associated parts. He or she must provide a written estimate of necessary repairs and should not start any work until you’ve approved it.

THE HISTORICAL PRESERVATION ROUNDTABLE OF ALLEGANY COUNTY (HPRAC) Allegany County- The Historical Preservation Roundtable of Allegany

County (HPRAC) met September 24th at the Cuba Cheese Museum with 13 members present. After a lengthy discussion, the group has decided their 2010 project will be to publish a book about the “unknown famous people” from Allegany County. These will be notable people who led interesting lives or who in some way changed the history of Allegany County. Jean Milliman, HPRAC president, said, “We are looking for input from all Alleganians, not just members of the Roundtable.” Do you have members of your family tree whose contributions enriched or improved life in our county? Are you a descendant of a trend-setter or a standard-bearer of earlier times? Are you related to founding members of a group or organization that was instrumental in building our communities? If so, this is your opportunity to help preserve their legacy for future generations. To make a submission to the book, all you have to do is write a simple, one-page article outlining your subject’s contributions and why you think they should be included in the book. If you have pictures, humorous anecdotes or quirky stories that will bring their personality to life in story, please include those also. Don’t let concerns over writing style, grammar or punctuation stop you from submitting. Those issues will be handled during the editing process. HPRAC will be accepting entries until March 15, 2010, at which time they will meet and, as a group, decide who will be included in the book which they plan to have published in the fall of 2010. Shinglehouse Borough Council EMERGENCY DAIRY MONEY PASSES CONGRESS Farm Bureau calls on USDA to distribute money quickly Albany- New York Farm Bureau president Dean Norton last week thanked Congress for including $290 million in emergency payments for struggling New York dairy farmers. “This money will help many of our family farms,” Norton said. “We are particularly grateful to Senators Schumer and Gillibrand, Representatives Massa, Murphy, Hinchey and Lee for stepping up for our farmers.” Senators Schumer and Gillibrand were successful in securing the funding on the Senate side. On the House of Representatives side, our pivotal House Agriculture Committee members, Congressmen Massa and Murphy, with Congressman Hinchey on the Agricultural Appropriations conference and Congressman Lee as a leader in the Congressional Dairy Caucus were strong advocates to securing this funding. The emergency funding was approved as part of a $121 billion agriculture spending bill. The bulk of the funding will go to nutrition and conservation programs. President Obama is expected to sign it into law soon. Another $60 million in cheese and dairy product purchases was included in the Agriculture Appropriations Bill for relief for struggling families hit by the current economic crisis through donations to food banks. New York Farm Bureau is calling on USDA to distribute the money quickly. “We are counting on USDA to deliver this money as soon as possible since we have so many farms in serious financial difficulties,” Norton said. “With dairy farmers losing an estimated $30,000 a month, the funds cannot come quickly enough to help farm families, their employees, and associated agricultural businesses who have already extended credit lines and are now faced with many open accounts,” continued Norton. USDA has not yet determined the vehicle on how the money will be distributed to farmers. Milk prices are currently at historic lows, at least $5 per hundredweight below the cost of production. New York Farm Bureau has been actively seeking out short term and long-term solutions to the crisis, first precipitated by the downturn in the global economy. Juan Pablo Montoya began the Chase for the Sprint Cup with 5,000 points, which meant he was 40 points out of first place. Since then, Montoya has finished fourth or better in every race. Now he is 58 points out of first place. Isn’t that incredible? Is there any doubt that Montoya is wondering to himself, “What do I have to do?” (One obvious answer: win a race.) The Chase Has Been Divided

Stewart. It wasn’t in order by points, but it was emblematic of the first four races. The Chase itself separates NASCAR’s top series into haves and have-nots. The first four races have further divided the fortunate 12 -- the drivers eligible to compete for the championship -into haves and have-nots. Perhaps there are now three castes: havehaves, have-have-nots and just plain old have-nots. Have-not classic, maybe. Johnson, Martin and Montoya have been almost faultless. Stewart has scrambled, but magnificently (and in some cases, luckily) averted disaster. Gordon is there, waiting for a sign of weakness. It’s still a bit too early to rule out a few others, but drivers like Kurt Busch and Carl Edwards just don’t seem capable of outperforming the top five. Their cars just don’t seem fast enough, at least not on a regular basis. At this point in 2007, Johnson and Gordon were doing this, but this is the first Chase in which so many have been so bulletproof. That’s likely to change, but the near-perfection of the top trio -Johnson, Martin and Montoya -- is astonishing. Their finishes:
