AMERICAN RED CROSS Give Thanks, Give Hope, Give Blood This Thanksgiving Blood Donors Sought to Increase Community Blood Supply The American Red Cross Blood Services, Northeast Division is encouraging all current eligible and new blood donors to give blood this Thanksgiving week and throughout the holiday season to help maintain the community blood supply. Donating blood is a simple act that helps save lives. Every two seconds someone in America needs blood, and blood donors can give someone hope this holiday season by donating blood. Blood is an essential component for patient care in area hospitals, and the only source of blood is a healthy, volunteer blood donor. Blood is needed throughout the holiday season and during the cold winter months. Due to hectic holiday schedules, busy travel plans and inclement weather in the Northeast, blood donations can decline during this time. “By adding blood donation to Thanksgiving traditions, families can help avert a blood shortage and begin their gift giving season early,” stated Kay Schwartz, chief executive officer, American Red Cross Blood Services, New York-Penn Region. “For those in good health, taking just one hour out of a busy holiday schedule to give blood is an active way of showing thanks. And, that one hour can give hope to patients who are less fortunate this Thanksgiving.” For more information about donating blood or to make an appointment, call 1-800-GIVE LIFE (800-448-3543) or visit donatebloodnow.org Individuals who are at least 17 years of age (16 with parental permission in Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Pennsylvania), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements. Identification is required at the time of donation. Note: Local hospitals’ blood is supplied by Community Blood Bank. fb NATIONAL ADVERTISING NETWORK, INC. (NANI) GET DISH - Free installation $19.99/mo. HBO & Showtime freeover 50 HD channels free. OUTDOOR CORNER from Faith Bible Church Bible Study Verse: Luke 6:40 “A student is not above his teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like his teacher. (NIV).” Thoughts: Those of us with kids always wonder what they’ll be like when they grow up. Actually, it is hard, sometimes, to even think of them as adults. But, it happens -- they do grow up, quickly! As they grow physically, mentally, and spiritually, it’s up to us as their parents to get them started right, to be their teachers. Think about it. What they learn from us, their parents, is the most important part of what they become. How do they learn? Mostly by watching. My Dad used to say, “Don’t tell me, show me.” How true that statement is. Yes, I hope my son learns hunting, shooting, and camping from me, and that he acquires a lifelong love for outdoor activities. That’s a legacy that I want to pass on to him, and he to his kids someday. But, those things are nothing compared to what he really needs to learn from me and see in me. Things like faith, forgiveness, tithing, dependability, Bible study, how to treat a wife and his kids right, and how to disciple others so that they will also grow in our Lord. So, as he grows up, will my son be like his teacher? Yes, he will. He will be whatever I’ve taught him to be; but more than that, he will be whatever I’ve shown him that I am. In the final analysis, I pray that I’m found to be a worthy teacher. Makes me stop and think. I hope it does you, too. (Cliff S.)

Action Point Proverbs 22:6 says, “Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it, (NIV).” Take time to train your children, maybe even the kids next door. Teach them how to hunt, fish, and camp safely. Especially teach them about the Lord, all that He’s done for us, and all that He is going to do for us in the future.

Sportsmen’s Tip Of The Day-

“Daily email Bible study for sportsmen”

Teach your kids gun safety and ethical hunting by example. Remember, they’ll hear your words, but they’ll do what they see you do.

MAXINE SHEAR DISPLAYS ARTWORK AT CCMH Maxine Shear of Coudersport has a variety of artwork on display at Charles Cole Memorial Hospital’s Irwin Medical Arts Center as part of the hospital’s Community Art Showcase. Shear, who works primarily with pen/ink and water-colors, started painting at age four. A lifelong Coudersport resident, she estimates drawing and painting over 500 buildings in the area; many were done from pictures obtained at the historical society, she said. Shear attended art school for one year but is mostly self taught. Her work has been featured at art shows and auctions, including a display at the John White Gallery and joint shows with her daughter. Anyone wishing to purchase one of her pieces can call Shear at 814-274-8910. The project has featured artists Karen Wolf of Sweden Township, Pat Bosworth of Port Allegany, Alyson Leach, Leslie Kelley, and Suzan Richar of Galeton, Naomi Keller, Heather Chilson, and Lindsey Francis of Coudersport, and Mercedes Schwartz of Smethport, according to chairperson Betty Wei. Artists are featured for about six to eight weeks. “It’s a way for area residents to enjoy the talent and creativity of local artists and the hospital family is thrilled to make this opportunity possible,” she said. For more information on the Community Art Showcase, contact Wei at 814-274-7910. fb

Bill Murk is one of the premier Christian violinists today. His rare, sensitive display of violin mastery and his fresh approach breaks old stereotypes and inspires a new appreciation for this instrument while bridging the musical gap between the generations. As a featured soloist at churches, conferences, conventions and crusades Bill has ministered in all fifty states and over forty countries! Whether ministering for 50,000 men at Promise Keepers, fiddlin’ at the Grand Ole Opry, leading worship with Don Moen, or accompanying and recording with such artists as Fernando Ortega, Amy Grant, Steve Green, Point of Grace, Larry Dalton, Buddy Greene, 4Him, or The Gaither Vocal Band, Bill’s desire is to draw people into the presence of the Lord. Bill’s life and ministry nearly ended in December of 1999 when he and his daughter were hit head-on by a speeding semi-truck. Their journey toward recovery is one filled with both miracles and hardships. For more information on this concert, please call Rev. Russell Horning at 814-697-6556. First Baptist Church is located at 120 West Academy Street in Shinglehouse, Pa. NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson • "I love to cut coupons that might look like a good deal. Sometimes, when I get to the store, I find that I would do better with the store brand. However, some people love certain brands, so I always leave the coupon with the item if I know I'm not going to use it. I'm always happy to share!" -- A.J. in Missouri • "You can create new Christmas postcards from last year's holiday cards. Print out a postcard template on adhesive paper and cut out matching-size pieces from the fronts of cards you received in the past. Write your message (or add it to the template before you print it), address and go. The biggest bonus is the price difference between firstclass mail and postcards." -- P.C. in Minnesota • "When making your favorite holiday cookie recipe, try this trick (if you can): Drop dough by spoonfuls on a small broiler sheet (or a plate covered with aluminum foil), then freeze. When frozen, the balls can be broken up and stored in a freezer-safe bag. To make a few cookies at a time, you can take them out and cook from frozen. It's magic." -- C.B. in Indianawill clean the air in the home of its recipient. Send your tips to Now Here's a Tip, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. It Really Is For The Birds By Ronda Addy Congratulations, you are now the proud parent of a feathered companion. You have everything in place-the cage, the toys and the food. You’ve made your home bird friendly. You’re all ready to go, right? Not quite. You need a vet that knows something about avian medicine. While any vet that pays dues to the Association of Avian Veterinarians (AAV) can call themselves an avian vet, true avian vets have an avian certification from the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (ABVP). To earn this certificate, vets must have six years of extensive, documented avian experience or formal training, plus pass a series of complicated exams. To find a qualified avian vet, ask around. Talk with other bird owners, avian rescue facilities, breeders and organizations to see whom they use. Ask pet stores for referrals. Check the Yellow Pages for vets that treat birds and the Web site of the Association of Avian Veterinarians to search for an ABVP certified vet in your area. When you find an avian vet, check them out. Interview them by phone first. Find out where they studied, what their specialty was and if they have any additional training. Find out how many birds they handle on weekly basis. Next, visit the vet’s practice. Is it clean? How do the technicians interact with the animals? What kind of condition is the equipment in? If the vet is not avian certified, do they have access to someone that is? Can they be reached in an emergency? If they go on vacation or become ill, who takes over the practice? Bring your bird in for an exam so you can see how comfortable the vet and techs are with handling them. Does the vet spend some time with you chatting about potential health problems of your pet and what you can do to avoid them? Do they recommend a healthy diet? Do they recommend magazines that can help you learn more about your pet? Don’t be afraid to ask for clarification of things you don’t understand. If at anytime you are unhappy with your vet, don’t be afraid to switch. If you are limited in your vet choices, talk to your vet and let them know you aren’t happy with their service. Your bird’s health is important. Don’t let hard feelings between you and your vet get in the way of that.

~•~ ~•~ ~•~ ~•~ It’s Tough Getting Old By Ronda Addy As your canine companion gets older, their muzzle will turn gray, their hearing and vision will diminish, and their energy will wane. These are all natural signs of aging. Should you detect more severe changes in your dog, especially in their personality, you might want to have them tested for Canine Cognitive Dysfunction (CCD). 585-968-2222 Hours: Mon.-Fri. 8:30am-5:30pm; Sat. 9:00am-2:00pm Alzheimer’s disease, CCD stems from physical changes in the brain and strikes dogs age 10 and older. Dogs affected by CCD no longer learn, think or remember as they once did, which causes behavioral changes. Symptoms of CCD vary and often include: • Failing to respond to name or familiar commands • Failing to recognize or greet others or being startled by them • Staring at walls or into space and being startled when the lights or TV is turned on • Forgetting familiar routines or tricks • Getting trapped under or behind furniture or stuck in corners • Appearing lost or confused in familiar places such as the backyard or house • Having trouble negotiating stairs or finding and using doors • Frequently shaking or trembling while standing up or lying down • Wandering or pacing aimlessly around the house • Engaging in repetitive, compulsive behavior • Walking around in circles compulsively, even at night • Barking for no reason or getting agitated easily

DOG DAY’S SALON 1944 Faulkner Rd., Olean, NY

• Sleeping less at night and more during the day • No longer caring about getting affection and walking away from it • Having accidents even after having just gone outside • Stopping to ask to go out • Forgetting the reason for going outdoors • Hesitating to take treats, drink fresh water or eat fresh food If you notice any of these symptoms, take your dog to the vet. Some of these symptoms can be contributed to other diseases, and your vet will need to rule those out. There is no cure for CCD, but there is a drug treatment that can help. If your dog responds to it, they will need to be on the medication for the rest of their life. There are side effects, which you vet will discuss with you. They might also suggest changes in diet and food supplements to protect your dog’s brain cells. In addition to drug treatment, your vet might suggest you take some measures to make your dog’s life easier. Some of these may include: • Not moving or changing the furniture • Eliminating clutter to make a wide pathway throughout the house • Creating ramps where there are stairs • Recognizing your dog’s limits when it comes to introducing to them to new toys, food, animals or people • Sticking to a routine feeding, watering and walking schedule • Keeping commands short, simple and soft • Encouraging gentle, short, involved play sessions As your dog ages, it’s important to pay attention to their behavior and not to dismiss changes as signs of old age. You must be patient and empathize with how your dog must be feeling. Unlike people, they cannot voice their frustrations. Your continued love and respect are what they need the most. They’re still your best friend.

LAUREN LYNCH CROWNED JMH AUXILIARY QUEEN Wellsville, NY (November 16, 2009)- The eight young ladies vying for the title of JMH Auxiliary Queen sold more tickets to the annual Grand Raffle and raised more money than any other group of candidates since the tradition began. According to Queen organizers Kathryn Gilbert and Sylvia Masin, this year’s candidates raised a total of $9,611. The top seller was Lauren Lynch, daughter of Terry and Reita Lynch of Wellsville. Lauren, who received her crown during the Auxiliary’s Gala & Silent Auction, raised $2,494. Coming in second was Isabelle Raptis, daughter of Mike and Michelle Raptis of Wellsville, who raised $2,200. The third place recognition went to Julie Goodliff, daughter of Marietta and Greg Goodliff of Andover. The other queen candidates this year were Devan Healy, Deanna Brownell, Katherine Braunscheidel, Danielle Williams and Molly Dempsey. “This is the largest amount our queen candidates have ever raised, and I’ve been involved in this for over 30 years,” said Sylvia Masin. The Grand Raffle winner was also drawn during the Gala & Silent Auction and the top prize went to Teri Monroe of Wellsville.

Lauren Lynch, center, was crowned the Auxiliary’s Queen for selling almost $2,500 worth of tickets to the Grand Raffle. Flanking her are second place winner, Isabelle Raptis, right, and Julie Goodliff. Together, the queen candidates raised more money than any previous group. f

Veterans Day Festivities at the pavilion on Horserun Road.

DONNA’S DAY: CREATIVE FAMILY FUN By Donna Erickson EASY OVERNIGHT BRUNCH DISH 2 French baguettes (or 16 slices of white bread with crusts removed) 2 cups cooked ham cut in chunks 10 eggs, beaten 3 1/2 cups milk 2 cups cubed or grated sharp cheddar cheese 1 cup Monterey Jack cheese 1/2 teaspoon dry mustard 1/2 teaspoon salt and cracked pepper to taste

Put it together the night before: 1. Slice one baguette in 1-inch slices and cut the second into 1-inch cubes. Set the slices in a buttered 13-by-9-by-2-inch glass baking dish. Sprinkle ham and cheeses over the bread, then scatter cubed bread on top. 2. Combine beaten eggs, milk, mustard, and salt and pepper, and pour mixture over all, making sure bread squares are soaked with the mixture. Cover with foil and refrigerate overnight. 3. In the morning, remove foil, preheat oven to 350 F and bake for an hour. Let stand for 10 minutes, then cut into squares to serve. Serves 8. Mom & Dad and Shanon COLLECTING By Larry Cox Q: I have a $20 bill that was signed by at least 28 stars at the Hollywood Canteen during World War II. I am enclosing copies of the signatures and wonder if you can place a value on it for me. -- Donald, Derby, N.Y. A: I examined copies of the bill that you sent and found several that I think are scarce. For example, autographs from Buster Keaton, Harold Lloyd and Ruby Keeler are not all that common. I spoke to Ray Nugent of Nugent Appraisal Services, a senior accredited appraiser of rare books, documents, manuscripts, autographs and antique maps, and he has agreed to help you. He is fully certified and a member in good standing of ISA, AAA, AIC and SAA. His contact information is P.O. Box 9174, Greenville, NC 29604; [email protected]; and www.nugentappraisal.com. This is a good time to begin developing new habits that will help you save money next year. Here are some ideas: Utility bills: If you had a goal this year of reducing your utility expenses by always turning off lights and lowering the thermostat, did you do it? If your savings weren’t what you expected because you didn’t always follow through, set a goal for next year. Notch the thermostat down a degree or two and turn off lights you’re not using until it becomes an easy habit. Cell phones: If you’re on a monthly plan that gives you a certain number of minutes for a set price, chances are you use up those minutes because they’re there. You can save money, however, by changing to an inexpensive phone with pre-paid minutes that you refill as needed. Your cell phone usage is likely to go down when you consider that each call is costing you a nickel or a dime per minute. The initial savings: no monthly bill. Additional savings: fewer minutes used. Grocery coupons: You have to do the work -- cut them out of the paper, plan meals around items that are covered by the coupons -- but there is serious money to be saved using grocery coupons. Investigate online coupon sites, too. (Generate a throwaway e-mail address for those sites requiring that you sign up.) Check with your local store before you present them with printed coupons. Some stores won’t take them. Pay attention to expiration dates. Rule of thumb: Don’t be tempted to buy food your family won’t eat just because it looks like a good deal. Sales flyers, ads and Internet comparison: Get in the habit of looking at the flyers and ads in the newspaper. Compare any intended purchases to what you find online. Plus, a local store with a Web site might list specials that never show up in a print ad. Think used: Check thrift shops for merchandise in good condition. You can find clothing, furniture, tools, books, children’s games, housewares and much more at very low prices. Take some steps now, and you’ll be positioned to start the New Year with better money-saving habits. (c) 2009 King Features Synd., Inc.

Mashed Potatoes With Onion and Bacon This entire recipe can be made ahead and reheated in the microwave when ready to serve. 4 slices bacon, chopped 1 large onion, chopped 3 pounds (about 9 medium) all-purpose potatoes, peeled and cut into 1inch chunks 1 bay leaf 1 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper 1 cup milk, warmed 1. In 10-inch skillet, cook bacon until browned over medium-low heat. With slotted spoon, remove bacon to paper towels to drain. To bacon fat in skillet, add onion and cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until tender, about 15 minutes. 2. Meanwhile, in 3-quart saucepan, heat potatoes, bay leaf and enough water to cover to boiling over high heat. Reduce heat to low; cover and simmer 15 minutes or until potatoes are fork-tender; drain. 3. Return potatoes to saucepan. Discard bay leaf. With potato masher, mash potatoes with salt and pepper. Gradually add milk; mash until mixture is well-blended. Stir in onion and bacon. Makes 8 accompaniment servings. • Each serving: About 200 calories, 8g total fat (3g saturated), 12mg cholesterol, 370mg sodium, 28g total carbohydrate, 5g protein. MONEYSAVER SHOPPING GUIDE

We wish to thank all of the friends and relatives, over 800, who searched for inspiring words of sympathy and have shown their support during our tragic loss of Sheldon. This is very hard to comprehend for all of us. All of you were touched by Sheldon as, I am sure, Sheldon was touched by all of you. A special thanks goes out to our parents and siblings. Your strength and support to us means more to us than words can say. In our period of being between homes, you opened your homes for us and made things bearable. You provided comfort to us and to Sheldon’s friends who traveled great distances to be here. We love all of you as Sheldon did. Also, to all of you that assisted and participated in Sheldon’s memorial; words can not express what a lovely memorial this was for our son, Sheldon. You are all special people. God bless you all. Thanks for the cards of sympathy, food, flowers and donations. All of you really helped us during this time of sadness and disbelief. Sheldon lives on in our hearts and will be greatly missed.

Yours, Mine, Ours... Taking Your Financial Vows Jointly? (NU) Congratulations, you’re getting married! So have you discussed who will maintain the household budget and who will make the major investment decisions? And, how do you plan to file your taxes— individually or jointly? According to financial planners, newlyweds spend more time planning their wedding than they do their finances. However, almost immediately after newlyweds say, “I do,” they discover how important the role of money is to the relationship. But, with planning and discipline, couples can make sure that differences over money won’t change “I do” to “I don’t.” No matter what your age, Fidelity Investments® suggests that newlyweds consider these simple guidelines: •Develop a budget by listing income and

The Origin of Wedding Traditions The Bridal Shower At one time, marriage was a business proposition between parents of the bride and groom. Love was not important. What was? The price the groom’s family paid for the bride and the size of the bride’s dowry. The first shower? A poor Dutch miller fell in love with a maiden whose father forbade the match and refused to provide a dowry. The miller’s friends came to the rescue and showered the bride-to-be with enough gifts in order to start housekeeping. The Honeymoon The first marriages were by capture, not choice.
