The 2009 Harley’s Heroes® Tour will include stops throughout the U.S. including over 175 Harley-Davidson dealerships where benefits assistance will be offered to veterans of all ages in communities where they live. The mission of Harley’s Heroes®, made possible with the help of a $1 million grant from the Harley-Davidson Foundation to Disabled American Veterans (DAV), is to provide assistance in obtaining benefits from the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) for all veterans and to show appreciation for their service and sacrifice to our country. While on the 2009 tour, DAV National Service Officers will provide benefits counseling to those veterans who suffer from service-connected injuries but may have never filed a claim for benefits or have found it difficult working with the VA. Larry’s Sport Center will be hosting the Harley’s Heroes® Tour for the third consecutive year. Larry’s will be serving lunch for veterans and their families in attendance. Larry’s will also be presenting all veterans with a custom made Harley’s Heroes® hat as a small “Thank You” for their service to our great country. What: 2009 Harley’s Heroes® Tour to stop and provide free benefits counseling services provided by the DAV to local veterans. Where: Larry’s Sport Center, Inc. Harley-Davidson When: Saturday, November 14th, 2009; 10:00am-3:00pm Who: Local veterans and veteran riders who could benefit from DAV services. The Importance of Disabled American Veterans to Our Nations Veterans- Injuries suffered during military service sometimes takes years to manifest or go years before being diagnosed. Many veterans have their injuries go untreated or uncompensated because they do not understand how to work with the Department of Veterans Affairs. Thanks to the DAV’s free services veterans can get the help they need. fb

People identified as high risk patients should contact their primary care provider to receive a vaccination as it becomes available. CCMH also began vaccinating health care workers and emergency medical services personnel this week to protect patients, staff and visitors. The CDC has recommended that high risk groups be vaccinated first: pregnant women, household contacts and caregivers of children younger than six months, health care and emergency medical services personnel, those six months to 24 years, and those 25 to 64 years with certain health conditions. After the high risk groups have been vaccinated, the general population will be able to receive the H1N1 vaccine. Last week, Charles Cole revised its visitation policy to further protect patients, staff and visitors due to increased flu activity. The revised visitation policy restricts children under 18 from visiting the hospital. Exceptions may be made for those visiting the hospital’s Long Term Care Unit, OB (siblings of newborns), and terminal and critical patients. All other exceptions will be made on a case by case basis. In addition, anyone, regardless of age, who is ill or who has ill household members should not visit the hospital. Unlike seasonal flu, children seem to be at high risk for H1N1 and can spread the virus easily among the population. All patient rooms at Charles Cole are equipped with phones; family and friends are encouraged to call patients if they cannot visit. E-cards, which are delivered to patient rooms, are also available via the hospital’s website, www.charlescolehospital.com Symptoms of the flu include fever, cough, body aches, runny or stuffy nose, and sore throat. Patients with H1N1 may also have nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. Anyone arriving at the hospital for medical care, who suspects he/she may have the flu, should wear a mask which will be available at the main entrance, at provider offices, and the emergency entrance. Patients with influenza-like symptoms should contact their medical provider’s office if they feel they need medical treatment. Otherwise, those with flu or flu-like symptoms should stay home for at least seven days after becoming ill and after 24 hours of being fever free without the use of medication. For more info., visit www.charlescolehospital.com or call CCMH’s flu hotline for a pre-recorded message at 814-260-5279 or toll free at 877-364-7904. fb

To Whom It May Concern: October 5, 2009. In 2004 Legislator William Dibble assisted the Richburg Fire Commissioners in obtaining grant monies through FEMA, which were used to help purchase a new 2004 Pumper Truck. This Pumper came fully loaded with emergency materials and supplies making it 100% operational from the start. The total cost of this truck was $186,000. After applying the FEMA grant monies the final cost to the taxpayers in the Richburg-Wirt Fire Department district was 10% of the total - $18,600. It was due to Mr. Dibble’s hard work and dedication to this project that included many late nights spent researching, and attending all of the Fire Commissioners meetings that this FEMA grant was made possible. Without his assistance we would not have received this grant. Yours truly,

You don’t see it so much among those of us who were voting. The families, the friends and the people themselves are the ones who get stirred up about this.” “Big Bill” France was instrumental in the organization of NASCAR in 1947, and led the ruling body until 1972, when he handed over the reins to his son, Bill Jr. The founder’s grandson, Brian France, now serves as NASCAR’s chairman and CEO. Petty and Earnhardt are the only NASCAR drivers ever to win seven championships. Petty won more races, 200, than any other driver. Pearson, who wasn’t selected, ranks second with 105. Johnson won 50 races as a driver, though never winning a championship. (Basically, because he never tried. In the 1940s, ‘50s and ‘60s, many drivers competed only in the more lucrative races.) Johnson then went on to win six

problems -- but good control of blood sugar can usually keep these complications to a minimum. Most people with type 1 diabetes lead the kind of lives they wish to lead, and most can be as active as they desire. Nowadays, people with diabetes check their blood sugar routinely and frequently adjust their insulin dose accordingly. New varieties of insulin make it easier to keep blood sugar within norms. Your daughter can have children unless her doctor has told her

otherwise. It's very important for a potential diabetic mother to maintain near-normal blood sugars at the time of conception and throughout pregnancy to prevent any disturbances in the growth and development of the embryo and fetus. These goals are usually achievable. The diabetes booklet gives an overview of this common condition and its treatment. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 402W, Box

DONOHUE: Will you discuss the best way to take multiple medicines in a 24-hour period? I have a friend who downs 13 pills at the same time. Does mixing numerous medicines change their effectiveness? -- N.A.

ANSWER: It's hard not to imagine that, in a batch of 13 different medicines, one or two, at least, would be incompatible with the other 11 or 12. The incompatibility might be a lessened drug absorption in the digestive tract or it might be that some of those drugs react chemically with others in the blood. Your friend should get this straightened out with the doctor or with the pharmacist. (c) 2009 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

about how to deal with an odor from my front-loading washer. When washing, very little detergent is used along with watered-down fabric softener and bleach that is added to the dispensers. The rim and all dispensers are kept clean. This odor makes the clothes smell sour and makes doing the laundry very difficult. Just what can you recommend for getting rid of this odor both in the washer and the clothes? -- Lani B., Kissimmee, Fla. A: Washer odor is actually pretty common, particularly in areas that are hot and humid much of the year. Odor problems tend to develop over time, even if the washer is not used every day. The culprit is not dirty dispensers or rims, or even leaks (most of the time). The problem is a buildup of soap scum in parts of the washer that can’t easily be reached, such as the outer tub and the inside or just under the agitator. Because this buildup sticks very well to surfaces, common home remedies like putting the washer through a cycle with a double dose of bleach added to the water -- to kill mildew -- will only temporarily stop the problem, if at all. A number of remedies, both homemade and commercial, are available to tackle it. Commercially available formulas include Smelly Washer (smellywasher.com), a solution that can be used to reduce mildew odors. Glisten, a dishwasher cleaner, can be used to clean clothes washers as well. Home-improvement stores and appliance sales or repair centers stock these or similar items. Home remedies involve running the empty washer through a full cycle with a cleaning or disinfecting ingredient added. Add a cup of baking soda to the wash water; or 3/4 cup of Calgon clothes detergent. A cycle using white vinegar also can be run (but don’t run baking soda and vinegar together in the same cycle). MLK COLLEGIATE CHALLENGE GRANT Alfred, NY, October 2009- Alfred State College (ASC) and Alfred University (AU) successfully teamed up, winning a Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service: MLK Collegiate Challenge Grant of $1,000 sponsored by the North Carolina Campus Compact. The grant supports efforts of college students to honor Dr. King through service to others. ASC and AU are charged with recruiting 150 students between their respective campuses with the goal of observing MLK Day (Jan. 18, 2010) through service while positively impacting the local community. The MLK Grant Committee, comprised of members of the two institutions, are planning a Community Resource Drive, scheduled for Nov 1-Dec. 11, 2009. During the Community Resource Drive students will collect items to donate to the Community Partners. Each Community Partner will submit a resource list of needed items. On Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Jan. 18, 2010, Alfred State and Alfred University students will have the opportunity to deliver the resources collected through the Resource Drive to each Community Partner and spend twothree hours volunteering at a partner’s location. Our Community Partners include ACCORD Corp.; Allegany County ARC; Allegany County Employment and Training One Stop Center; Allegany County Office for the Aging; Allegany County Red Cross; Allegany County Youth Bureau; Allegany County Youth Court; Allegany Rehabilitation Association New Horizons Program; Allegany Western Steuben Rural Health Network; Cornell Cooperative Extension, Allegany and Cattaraugus Counties; Geneseo Migrant Center; Hornell Area Concern for Youth; Literacy West New York; Salvation Army of Hornell; Salvation Army of Wellsville; Southern Tier Environments for Living; and SPCA of Allegany/Steuben Counties. Dr. Jerri Drummond, associate vice president of student development and Jeannine Rose, Counseling Services, Alfred State, and Ryan Arroyo, service learning coordinator/ AmeriCorps VISTA Member, Alfred University, are coordinating this project between the two schools. North Carolina Campus Compact is a coalition of colleges and universities collaborating to increase campus-wide participation in community and public service. Presidents commit their institutions to join with other schools in becoming “engaged campuses” that enhance students’ sense of responsibility, citizenship, leadership, and awareness of community. The MLK Collegiate Challenge Grant is intended to assist campuses in mobilizing volunteers on Jan. 18, 2010, making the King Holiday a ‘Day On, Not a Day Off!’ fb

FLASHBACK By Mick Harper 1. Name the two artists who did “The Boy Is Mine.” Bonus point for knowing the year. 2. Put these Michael Jackson hits in chronological order: “Thriller,” “Black or White,” “Billie Jean” and “Bad.” 3. Which hard-rock Foreigner song from 1977 was used in the movie “Superbad” in 2007 and was then picked up by former “American Idol” contestant Chris Daughtry on his debut album? 4. Which two artists cut “Ebony and Ivory”? 5. Name the two No. 1 hits by the group Mr. Mister. 6. What was The Knack’s debut single? Answers 1. Brandy and Monica, two single-name R&B artists, cut the song in 1998. It spent weeks at the top of the charts. 2. “Billie Jean” (1983), “Thriller” (1984), “Bad” (1987) and “Black or White” (1991). 3. “Feels Like the First Time.” 4. Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder in 1982. The song stayed at the No. 1 position on the Billboard charts for seven weeks. 5. “Broken Wings” in 1985 and “Kyrie” in 1986. The sound at the start of “Broken Wings” is said to be the crash of a cymbal played in reverse. 6. “My Sharona” in 1979 on the group’s album “Get the Knack.” The song stayed on the charts at No. 1 for six weeks and ended up in the coveted No. 1 slot for the year. NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson • To keep boots upright, stick an egg carton down the leg portion. This way, it won’t flop over and create a crease. ALFRED STATE COLLEGE’S HINKLE MEMORIAL LIBRARY GALLERY WILL HOST AN EXHIBITION Alfred, NY, October 2009- Alfred State College’s Hinkle Memorial Library Gallery will host an exhibition of the works of local artist Jay Pullman, from Monday, Nov. 2, through the end of the current academic semester (mid-December). Pullman works in oils, watercolors, charcoal, graphite, and pen and ink. His subject matter is diverse, but includes scenes from Provence, the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes, flowers, portraits, and Civil War paintings inspired by members of the 21st Georgia Infantry. Pullman spent a good deal of his life teaching English, first at Ithaca High School, then at Morrisville State College, but has always loved drawing and painting. It wasn’t until he retired several years ago and moved to Arkport, however, that he has pursued his passion fully. Of Dutch heritage, he has always felt a kinship with the artists of Holland, from Frans Hals and Rembrandt to Van Gogh. Pullman is largely self-taught as a painter but has gained a lot from the workshops and video instruction of contemporary artists. With the support and encouragement of his wife, Terry, he finds it stimulating to work in different media: oil, watercolor, charcoal, graphite, and--more recently-pen and ink. He has come to realize that serious painting is not recreation or therapy. It is intense creative work, even though it may have those other benefits. He feels his art says more about his own state of mind, ultimately, than it does about his subject matter. His work has appeared as part of an exhibit called “Art and Artifacts of the Civil War,” at the Glenn Curtiss Museum in Hammondsport. He is currently exhibiting and selling paintings and prints at New Dimensions and Dr. John Meyer’s dental office, both in Hornell, and at Sylor Imaging & Decor in Dansville. He also has cards for sale at Berry Vine Creations, Arkport, and the Canacadea Country Store, Alfred. Pullman welcomes visitors to his online gallery: www.pullmanpaintings.com The exhibit will be available during regular library hours: Mondays - Thursdays 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.; Fridays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturdays from 1 to 7 p.m.; and Sundays from 1 to 11 p.m. fb

Bolivar Trailblazers Snowmobile Meetings

When you are looking to buy a new bow or rifle and have difficulty choosing the right caliber, stock, or arrows, back off. Better yet, stop for a moment. When it comes to hightech hunting equipment, one really needs some knowledge to make the right choice.

Second and Fourth Monday Every Month Next Meeting: Oct. 26, 2009 Time: 7:30 p.m. Place: Bolivar American Legion

Guys, you need to ask (pray) for God’s help in your decision. That should always be your first action in most matters of life.

Anyone needing registration discounts must attend and join the club.

God wants to be personally involved in our lives. Let Him be involved in the exciting decisions like the one above. You never know where He will guide your path as He leads you into knowledge. (MQ)

Action Point: Always ask God for his knowledge and understanding on life’s matters. He has promised He will give it. Sportsmen’s Tip Of The Day-

To The Voters Of The Town Of Wirt My name is Gayle Dorrett, and I am running for the position of clerk/collector in the Town of Wirt. For those of you who do not know me, I would like to tell you a bit about myself. I grew up in Wellsville, NY and moved to Richburg in 1971 when I married my husband, Mark. After our children started school, I went on to further my education. I received a degree in Computer Science from J.C.C. and an Elementary Education degree from St. Bonaventure. I taught for 17 years at Immaculate Conception School in Wellsville before retiring in 2008. Serving our community has been my desire since retirement, so that is why I have made the decision to run for town clerk/collector. I would be honored to serve the town of Wirt and would appreciate your vote on Election Day, November 3, 2009. Thank You, Paid political advertisement

FAMILY FEATURES

T

he bewitching season is here! Gather the goblins, conjure up some creative costumes and prepare scary, scrumptious sweets for a great ghostly gathering. Making these frighteningly fabulous party treats together is a perfect way for mom and the kids to share some spooktacular fun. Cast a spell right from the start with a Happy Haunted House. Begin with a ready-to-decorate Halloween Cookie House Kit available at craft and hobby stores. The house is pre-assembled; just decorate and enjoy! Sweetly smiling Goldfish Grahams do double duty as both roofing “tiles” and a wholesome snack (they re made with whole grains, without artificial preser vatives). Kids can affix the Goldfish crackers to the roof after it s been iced (and enjoy snacking on them as they work), making sure to give equal representation to each flavor: cinnamon, honey and chocolate. The sparkling blue piping gel moat and pond need to be stocked with Goldfish, too. Complete the decorating with green coconut grass, a candy corn fence plus the icings and the candies that come with the kit. B-O-O Pops are easy ... nothing sinister here! Use a brownie mix for convenience and bake in the Brownie Pop Silicone Mold to ensure perfect pops. The kids can insert the lollipop sticks, then dip pops into the colorful Candy Melts. Decorating sprinkles and sugars add the finishing flourish. Halloween Goldfish Munch is a snappy party snack or a tantalizing take-away for ghoulish guests. Kids can mix the Goldfish crackers (graham and pretzel flavors), with nuts and dried fruits while Mom melts the Spooky Green Candy for drizzling. Add favorite beverages and let the spookalicious party begin! For additional information about Goldfish Grahams, recipes and nutrition information, visit www.pepperidgefarm.com. Find more ways to bake, decorate and celebrate, or order the Halloween Cookie House Kit at www.wilton.com.

2351 Stannards Road • Wellsville, New York 14895 CCMH MAKES CHANGES TO VISITATION POLICY Charles Cole Memorial Hospital has implemented changes to its visitation policy, effective immediately, to help fight the spread of seasonal and H1N1 influenza. All patient rooms at Charles Cole are equipped with phones; family and friends are encouraged to call patients if they cannot visit. E-cards, which are delivered to patient rooms, are also available via the hospital’s web site, www.charlescolehospital.com CCMH enacted the revisions to its policy to protect its patients, visitors, and staff as more people are experiencing influenza-like symptoms this fall. Unlike seasonal flu, children seem to be at high risk for H1N1 and can spread the virus easily among the population. Symptoms of the flu include fever, body aches, runny or stuffy nose, and sore throat. Steps people can take to prevent the spread of flu include frequent hand washing with soap and water or an alcoholbased hand sanitizer, covering the nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing, avoid touching the eyes, nose or mouth, disinfecting surfaces such as tables, counters, doorknobs, and childrenís toys as the virus can live on surfaces for several hours, and avoiding close contact with people who are sick. Those who are sick should stay home for at least 24 hours after their fever has subsided without the use of medication. Families are encouraged to have a plan in place should household members become sick. Being prepared includes having a supply of over-the-counter medications, tissues, hand sanitizer/soap, and food, and making arrangements with an employer if people need to miss work due to illness and/or school and child care closings. Vaccination is the best way to prevent the seasonal flu. People can receive the vaccine from a medical provider or a community flu clinic. The seasonal flu vaccine does not protect against H1N1. Charles Cole has registered with the state Department of Health to receive H1N1 vaccine but has yet to receive a supply. NOW HERE’S A TIP- By JoAnn Derson • “Defog your bathroom mirror with shaving cream. If you are constantly wiping the steam away from the mirror to shave, try this old trick. Rub a healthy amount of shaving cream on the mirror surface, then wipe away with a towel. You can rub it with newspaper to get the cream off, but don’t clean it with glass cleaner. The next time you shower or shave at the sink, the fog just won’t accumulate!” -- B.G. in Idaho

Can You Identify These Items? These items were on display at the Richburg-Wirt Historical Society’s Soup and Sandwich Luncheon Oct. 22nd. Attendees were asked to try and identify them. The winner with the most correct answers was Diane Little of Bolivar. She received a free dinner at next year’s luncheon.

Answers: 1.) Corn Husker. 2.) Tack Puller. 3.) Hod (something to carry cement and bricks on shoulder). 4.) Whisk.

*** Q: I have a set of china made by Pope-Gosser sometime during the 1940s. What can you tell me about this company? -- Anne, Pittsford, N.Y. A: The Pope-Gosser China Company was founded in 1902 in Coshocton, Ohio, by Charles F. Gosser and Bentley Pope. During the early years of the past century, the company produced a high-grade translucent china body for vases, but I have never found a single piece, either in a shop or private collection. In 1929, Pope-Gosser merged with eight other companies to form The American China Corporation. Despite the merger, the Pope-Gosser mark remained on china sets throughout the 1940s and ‘50s. The value of your set depends on the pattern and condition. *** Write to Larry Cox in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box

1969. I would like to know its value so I can sell it for the right price. -Sonia, Geneseo, N.Y. A: There are pictures ... and there are pictures. Is your Presley picture an original, or was it issued commercially by a movie studio? Without key information, I can’t help you. Put another way, it’s like asking, “How much is my old car worth?” If it’s a 1932 Packard Roadster, quite a bit, but if it’s a 1987 Zastava Koral (Yugo), not so much. *** Q: I have a Seth Thomas clock that was given to me by my dad. Can you tell me how much it is worth? -- Jean, Marion, N.Y. A: Your question is impossible to answer since I have no idea of either the style or model of your clock. I found several Seth Thomas clocks featured in one of my favorite references, Antique Trade Clocks: Price Guide 17th Century Through 20th Century, edited by Kyle Husfloen (Krause, $17.95). If your clock is a Seth Thomas calendar clock made for the Southern Clock Company, Husfloen lists it at $2,363. On the other hand, if it is an Art Nouveau mantel clock, not so much, perhaps $315. The value depends on condition, rarity and demand.

Congratulations By Tresa Erickson You’re sitting down at the kitchen table eating a sandwich when the telephone rings. You answer it, and on the other end, your daughter begins shouting that she is engaged. You smile to yourself, remembering when her fiancé stopped by and asked for your blessing. You knew this moment was coming; you just didn’t know when. Now that the cat is out of the bag, you may want to start thinking about hosting an engagement party for your daughter and future son-in-law. Traditionally, the bride’s parents host the engagement party to announce the couple’s engagement, celebrate

their upcoming union and introduce themselves to the groom’s family. However, if the bride’s parents are unable to host the party, the groom’s family or any relative or close friend of the couple may do so. Of course, you should ask the couple first if they would like an engagement party. Some couples embrace the idea, while others think having an engagement party, along with a bridal shower and wedding, is too much. Don’t be upset if the couple declines your offer. If they are excited by the idea, sit down with them and select a date together for the party, no more than three or four months after the proposal. Traditionally, all

guests invited to the engagement party should be invited to the wedding as well. However, if the couple is planning a small affair, you can still have a large engagement party. Just make sure that everyone you invite to the engagement party knows that the wedding is going to be small. That way, if they don’t get invited to the wedding, they won’t be offended. You also need to consider what type of engagement party to throw. You can go formal or informal. Keep the tastes of your future in-laws in mind as you make this decision. If they like casual gatherings, then a cookout at home or a party at a restaurant might be ideal. If they would prefer a more formal gathering, then a sit-down dinner at a fine establishment might be better. While selecting the type of party to have, remember that the big event, the wedding, remains. Don’t upstage it.
