What Does the Chamber Do?

veryone knows that we organize and promote business mixers, ribbon cuttings, run a visitor center, house the County Film Office, and give out maps. But that is just a small part of what your membership investment dollars support. Your annual membership is an investment in the Chamber and makes up just over half of our operating costs for the Chamber Office/Visitor Center/ and County Film Office. The rest of our budget is raised through partnership funding, fund-raising events we organize such as the Mendocino Whale Festival, our annual fall event, advertising in our annual visitor guide, our website advertising, and ads in the newsletter. Sponsorships help to cover the expense of events such as the Fort Bragg Whale Festival, the Fort Bragg Fireworks and the Mendocino 4th of July Parade. These events are not revenue streams for the Chamber’s operating expenses, they help bring outside dollars to the region and to our members. Our staff currently organizes five major events, which requires numerous hours to plan, organize, and run. We also help members promote their businesses and non-profit fund-raising events through our visitor center, E-news, newsletter, calendar of events, and website every day, week and month of the year. We feel fortunate to have members who volun-

~ Save the Date ~ 2010 Mendocino Coast Whale Festivals Mendocino - March 6 & 7 Fort Bragg - March 20 & 21 How to Get That News Release To the Media

By: Bruce Lewis Nearly everything about the news release has changed. The old: the who, what, why, when, where and how (the five “w’s and h”). The new: the old five “w’s and “h,” + hyperlinks for websites, social media pages and video. Both formats are short: 300-400 words max. But after you have figured out how to write one of these news releases, how do you get it distributed? If you have personal contacts or lists you have created, by all means send it to them. Best not to send as an attachment because spam filters often block them. Instead, turn on “HTML” in your email pro-

Page 3 • September 2009

gram so the format is maintained, then cut and paste the release into the email message. An alternative is a teaser headline and a link to your press release (with photos, etc.) on your website. If you’re sending the release to a personal list, make sure it goes to the right contacts at each TV, radio, web or print media outlet. A story related to a new service at a lodging establishment won’t interest the wine editor unless there is some wine angle. Hitting the right target is key to getting coverage. Don’t forget bloggers. And, of course, post to your own blog, then tweet and Facebook with a link to the news release. A Better Way A better, more efficient way to distribute your news release is through PRNewswire, Business Wire or PRWeb.com. PRNewswire and Business Wire have been around for decades. They keep their media lists updated, help you target your release and have first-rate professional editors who review, edit and prepare your release for distribution. You pick a “circuit,” such as “Bay Area” or “Northern California,” upload it to their website and it will go out within about 60 minutes to hundreds of electronic and print journalists, as well as 3,000+ websites and portals. The cost ranges from $175 for a local circuit to $650 for a national release. The annual membership fee for BW and PRN is about $100 a year. If you’re a non-profit, they generally offer a 10% discount off the regular distribution prices. New Kid on the Block A new distribution service, PRWeb.com, is a bit cheaper (as low as $80 per release) and claims to be better focused on bloggers and social media sites. I have used this service a few times, but haven’t yet had a chance to monitor the results. You must compare the distribution, however. For $80, you aren’t reaching the same audience as the $175 release on PRN or BW. I think the $140 PRWeb.com release option is the best deal. Pricing is right on line so you can check it out. A final note: even if your release never makes it into print, if you use a distribution service it will be out on the web for everyone to find.

Dear Mendocino Coast Chamber MemberWe are excited to announce EcoMotion Mendocino, a community block party aimed at uniting Mendocino County sustainability efforts, introduce visitors to the area and stimulate the local economy! This event is also a benefit for local non-profits who are facilitating this work. EcoMotion Mendocino will take place downtown Fort Bragg on Saturday, October 10th from noon to ten p.m with live music, vendors, art exhibits, kid’s eco - play stations and many other activities. The city of Fort Bragg, Nykety Splits Presents and countless private investors and local businesses are helping to make this event possible. We hope that you will be excited about the opportunity to join the efforts to bring Fort Bragg businesses and residents together to create connections that will continue to help Fort Bragg and the County of Mendocino be a progressive, forward-thinking area to do business and raise families. We invite you to play a role in supporting this event and making EcoMotion Mendocino your own!

Here are some ways that we invite you to participate:

Sponsor – Local businesses are uniquely positioned to benefit from sponsoring this innovative event. By having your business name and logo connected with bringing EcoMotion Mendocino to Fort Bragg, members of the community will understand that your business cares about their well being, future and needs as a community. EcoMotion Mendocino Sponsorship is also an excellent opportunity to introduce visitors (tourists and those who are considering moving their homes or businesses to Fort Bragg and the surrounding areas) to the products and services your business offers. Check our website or E-mail “[email protected]” to get a sponsorship package and learn how supporting EcoMotion Mendocino can help the community get to know your company better. Donate – Donations to help support this event go towards covering the production costs and hosting the local non-profit booths at this event. Donations are tax deductable and can be mailed to PO Box P.O. Box 2650. Ft. Bragg CA 95437. Every bit counts! Exhibit or Vend - Booth applications are currently being reviewed for businesses, vendors and groups that wish to exhibit their products or services during the event. Interactive booths are encouraged. Partial scholarships are available to local start-ups and vendors when they are unable to pay. To find out more about booth prices, go to our website www.EcoMotionMendocino.com or e-mail [email protected]

Volunteer - EcoMotion Mendocino has countless volunteers helping make this free community event

possible. Volunteers are needed before the event to help with marketing, putting up flyers, attaining sponsorships and pre-production work. Volunteers are needed during the event to pick up trash, monitor the kid’s eco area, collect contribution envelopes, assist with the VIP area and much more. For more info review the volunteer page of our website or send an e-mail with your name, contact info, availability and preferred type of work to [email protected] to discuss what is available.

With best wishes, Nicole Kench, Director, EcoMotion Mendocino & the EcoMotion Team
