Location, Location , Location!

ecently the question of why the Chamber moved out of the central business district of Fort Bragg has resurfaced. I thought perhaps it would be a good topic to revisit. As some of you know this was not a knee jerk reaction but based on many factors.

This decision was partly based on the interview that we had with the Randall Travel Marketing representative which indicated our former location was lacking adequate parking, interior space for the visitors and lack of visibility. I am pleased to let you know that our numbers are almost even with the old location of walk-ins. As I once explained to the mayor of Fort Bragg, the city manager, and others who questioned our decision, the visitors do not walk here from Sacramento, Chico, San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, Germany, England, Austria, Australia, New Zealand, and so many other places, they drive into our area and they are delighted to have a spacious lot to park in. The visitors who bike here from Canada, or from the south, are delighted with our new bike rack, as well as the beautiful redwood picnic table. They are able to relax and look over maps before deciding what to see next.

ticed was that traffic merged in front of our location and visitors were more concerned about not running into the car in front of them, than looking over to see where we were located. Another point of interest is that the work that the Chamber staff and board does behind the scenes to promote our area, to promote business, to help strengthen the local economy, planning the whale festivals, organizing travel writer Fam Tours, organizing the 4th of July Parade, the fireworks, and so much more goes on whether we are in the CBD or not. The support from our members helps us continue this work. This benefits all businesses, members and non-members. Our new location also gives us room to hold our new “12@12 Brown Bag Lunch Series” which is free for members and $25 for non-members. All in all this has been a good move for us that benefits our members and visitors.

Visitors can take their time looking at brochures in our expanded visitor center area and ask questions or collect information quickly with referrals and be on their way to see our members. Another question came up regarding the Chamber leaving another vacant office space in the downtown Fort Bragg area. I can assure you that we forwarded half a dozen inquiries about the space to the onsite manager and owner, as we were packing and moving. They were able to rent the space quickly, so it was only vacant for a short time during the rainy winter days, when there are typically less visitors in the area. A few of our members originally felt that our move did not make sense, but after hearing the reasons we did it and now having more parking space available downtown for the “shoppers”, most agree it was the right thing to do. I can’t tell you how many times people would walk into our old location and complain that they couldn’t find parking, they couldn’t find us and that we needed better signage. What we no-
